USB Device not recognized / Unknown Device

I'm having an issue where my thunderbolt does not recognize my device any longer. I used to have it set up with pdanet and everything worked well for about a week. All of a sudden, any computer i tried to plug the device into, wouldn't detect the phone. A friend of mine has tried his thunderbolt on my computer and it detects it.
When plugging my phone in, it pops up an error message with "USB Device not Recognized." In the device manager, the phone shows up as Unknown Device. I have tried this on 3 different pc's, using 3 different data cables. No USB symbol displays on the taskbar of the phone when I plug it in, however, it does charge.
What I have tried:
Changing data cables.
Using another PC.
Uninstalling device drivers and letting windows re-detect and install.
Downloaded HTC Sync and ran it after uninstalling drivers again and re-plugging the phone.
Changed different Connection settings on the phone, such as USB Debuggin on/off, and changing it to HTC Sync Mode, Charge Only, Disk Drive, etc
Mounted and unmounted SD Card in the phone settings.
OS: Windows 7 x64
Thank you for any help you may provide.
same problem
I have the same problem with HTC mytouch 3g 32B Android 2.2.1 when I plug it through usb under Vista.
Any suggestions?
Try installing the usb drivers from htc if you haven't.
http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/USB_driver_20101122_release.zip
I have download the HTC usb drivers but when i go to control panel and uninstall the unknown device it just reinstalls it. when i try to update drivers using the location
ie C:\Users\sxristi\Downloads\android-usb-driver\Android USB Driver\i386
i get a reply
The best software for you device is already installed. Windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date.
and it continues to point to
unknown device
Oh one more things i got the usb drivers from Android SDK Manager the google usb drivers revision 4 and the weird thing is that i do not get the trident usb nor the debug icon on my HTC when i plug it in to my vista. I did get it once or twice before but not in general since the usb devices are not recognized. However when i boot on my Ubuntu os then i do get them recognized. so i guess the problem is with windows drivers somehow...
Thanks for the replies.
I've tried to install the drivers from HTC but Windows says that the driver is not compatible with my the device.
Also, I tried on a system with Windows XP and everything worked as intended, but I cannot get it to work properly in Win 7 x64 anymore.
When my win7 comp no longer sees my Tbolt I have to toggle the USB Debugging off then back on. Usually within a few seconds it reads it again. If that does not work I have also used the option to turn on internet pass through then change it back to hard drive mode. Either of those usually work for me. My drivers I used were from android sdk if that makes any difference. Hope this helps.

These didn't work, but thanks for the input
HTC
My problem continues under Vista OS. I called HTC and they told me to re install their Sync after removing Adobe Air and all HTC drivers and Google USB drivers. I did that and reinstalled Sync and still nothing. They also told me to call microsoft for it seems operating system conflict.
My conclusion yields toward windows conflict. But I can not figure out this conflict. Perhaps something I have installed does not let my vista recognize the HTC android device and uses the windows usb drivers to create this "Unknown Device" under usb serial bus controllers. once it is an unknown device forget about Sync or ADB etc... The phone is just not recognized as android and you can not do much with it via windows.
For the person who suggested to turn "USB Debugging" on-off, i did that and still the computer recognizes that there is a usb device but again it says "usb device not recognized unknown device.."
any additional suggestions???
I've verified that my phone works fine on Windows XP. I still cannot connect to windows 7, though.
Try turning OFF Fast Boot and turning ON USB debugging. this helped for me.
same problem
I have a similar problem too .. i know its not the computer as other phones and pen drives are working ok.
Plus this phone has same problem on other computers too, where as other phones work fine.
So it has to do something with the phone and not the drivers or computer in anyway
I have the same problem, no PC recognizes my HTC Thunderbolt. Now change cable and tried with windows xp, 7 and 8. Is there any solution I can not root. I want to change the rom factory rom I do not like but I can not do anything because I do not recognize the usb. Also the menu does not appear when I connect via USB in the notification bar.

I'm having the same issue, with an HTC Rezound... just flashed a new rom, need to update boot.img but can't see my device via adb or fastboot... have tried changing usb cables, phone is in FASTBOOT mode... reinstalled HTC Drivers, just get USB Not Recognized error (Windows 8 64-bit)...
Any solution for this?

ADB not seeing the device

I installed the drivers for the phone (v3.0.0.007 & v3.0.0.017), rebooted PC since it wasn't working when I plugged the phone in, then plugged in phone which worked (couple devices showed up in device manager), fired up ADB which I already had installed for my OG Droid & Nook Color, "adb devices" returns nothing. Replug phone in, select HTC Sync for the method, verified USB Debugging was showing up, "adb devices" - still nothing. Now in Device Manager, I don't have any HTC Android devices like I saw a minute ago. Now I just have "Unknown device" and it won't accept the USB drivers from C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Win7_x64. When I plug in the phone, it no longer prompts me what I want to do on the phone, it just connects USB Debugging and nothing else - no disk drive, no HTC Sync, no nothing. Rebooted PC & phone, same deal when I plug in the phone - it just has an "unknown device" and doesn't let me choose HTC Sync or anything. I made sure the check box is still checked for "ask me" under settings -> connect to PC.
I am reinstalling drivers now and am not going to install the full HTC Sync package. Maybe that'll work better. So far, it appears that the drivers and/or HTC Sync software are crap.
Unplugged phone
Uninstalled all 3 HTC pieces in appwiz.cpl
Installed v3.0.0.007 drivers
Plugged phone in
Got message about failing to install hardware
Device manager now shows: Other devices - Android Phone
It did this the first time I tried installing stuff and a reboot of the PC fixed it, so I'm rebooting...brb!
No luck still. Trying some more stuff. If anyone out there has any ideas, let me know. My phone still won't prompt me for action when I plug in the USB.
Uninstalled HTC USB drivers (v3.0.0.007)
Installed HTC Sync package, including HTC USB drivers v3.0.0.017 & USB BMP drivers
Plugged in phone - same problem
Running out of ideas. Might do factory reset on phone. Might try another PC.
OK I think I figured it out. You have to turn off USB Debugging. As soon as I did that, my PC found new hardware and the phone displayed the expected prompt. It mounted an E: drive and wanted to load TL-bootstrap.exe, which I didn't do.
When I go to the debugging options, it shows as already on even though I just disabled it. I uncheck it and recheck and it goes back to broken state - PC shows an unusable "Android Phone" under Other Devices.
Hmm...now what?
Had to go to a meeting, so I did a factory reset on my phone and set it to not sync, so it should be just like it was when I first got it from Verizon.
Without USB debugging turned on, the phone appears to connect to my PC properly, but HTC Sync says "no device connected" and the phone says "Unable to find HTC Sync on your PC. Please make sure that HTC Sync is installed and opened blah blah blah".
The only hardware that appears in device manager is a pair of "HTC Android Phone USB Device" in the Disk Drives section, as well as a 3rd one under DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Since HTC Sync isn't working, I guess the drivers are completely failing. I hate crappy drivers. Might have to just mess with my phone from a different PC.
Now USB Debugging won't load at all. I toggle it on and off, disconnect and reconnect USB cable, toggle it again.....nothing happens. Seems to be going downhill quickly.
Uninstalled all HTC software again, including a WModem one that I didn't see before (could be leftover from rooting the wife's Incredible).
Plugged phone in to see what it does - pretty much the same as when all the HTC software is installed. That is, 3 drives mount when USB Debugging is turned off. Turning debugging on is working now, but there is no driver installed on my PC. However, it doesn't matter if I install drivers, it still won't use them.
Does anyone know if there is a special driver for Win7 64-bit?
I have Windows 7 x64 Pro at the office and home, and am using the drivers from HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe just fine. Try doing a hard power cycle on the phone (power off, then on -- or yank the battery) and restart your computer. Use a USB port that is on the back of your motherboard or from a trustworthy powered USB hub (undervoltage will cause you all kinds of grief). Try another cable. Use charge-only mode, not HTC Sync.
Sorry for the spam earlier. Ya, it was just my laptop. My home PC is Win7 x64 as well and it works fine. Wireless tether is workin'. Loving the Rezound!
REPLY:ADB not seeing the device
yeahh i got so scared because ADB would not recognize my Rezound after Re-Flashing the Stock Rom because for some reason my phone suddenly kept re-booting over and over non stop.. so anyways.. i found a fix. well it worked for me at least. i re-installed the HTC drivers and then on the phone i turned "USB Debugging" On. then i plugged the phone to the computer, opened up CMD and when typing
"cd c:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools\ ENTER"
"adb devices ENTER" it came back as
List of devices attached
HT19YS204824 device
Before it would say error. it worked for me. hopefully this is at least of some help

Problems with MTP USB Device

I plug my phone into a USB port.
The first time I did so, an AutoPlay window pops up prompting me to run LGAutoRun.exe. I click to do so.
The LG United Drivers are installed onto my computer great.
But then an AutoPlay window pops up prompting me to run LGAutoRun.exe. I click to do so.
My computer attempts to install MTP USB Driver, but fails. According to Windows, the device is unplugged.
The AutoPlay window reappears. Repeat from the beginning of the paragraph.
What have I done to deserve such trouble, LG?!?!
Apparently the drivers installed directly from phone are not enough. In any case, I was observing similar behaviour *until* I installed LG PC Suite (which you should have been prompted to do too). It's stupid, it sucks but again, it's LG.
Install the LG drivers first. After that, when you plug your phone, it will be recognised as an mtp device.
Have you got Windows Media Player installed?

Plug the phone, go to device manager in windows and uninstall the driver for the phone( or whatever shows up with the yellow triangle). Then unplug the phone and connect it back again. It should work. If not, uninstall the lg drivers and clean every trace of them and start from the begining.

Tried uninstalling the LG U2 USB Driver, then disconnected and reconnected phone. Same problem. LG U2 USB Driver was installed but MTP USB still shows up as unplugged.
Then uninstalled LG PC Suite and LG United Mobile Driver, reinstalled LG PC Suite and reconnected phone. Problem still occurs. I run LGAutoRun.exe and United Mobile Drivers are installed. Same problem. MTP USB shows up as "device unplugged" and phone keeps disconnecting and reconnecting to computer, saying drivers were not properly installed due to MTP USB being unplugged.
Interesting to note the phone is listed as a CD-ROM drive.

Install the software from the CD image. It will load the correct driver. After this re-connect the device and the CD image will show up for a few seconds and disappear. After this the storage will show up. That is how it worked on my device.

I have already tried what you said as I posted before. The LG United Mobile driver gets installed but the MTP USB Driver does not get installed due to the device being unplugged according to Windows, even though I have yet to disconnect the phone from the computer. The phone still says "Connected as an installer".
The phone is recognized as an F: Drive by Windows but LGE Mobile but keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every 20 seconds or so.
I am going to have to upload a video to YouTube to make things crystal clear.

Try a different USB port or cable. My P769 would not work on my USB 3 ports, but was happy on the USB 2 port. I had already installed the drivers and LG PC Suite and it picked up each mode just fine.
Plugging the phone into USB 2.0 makes the phone show up in portable devices, but LG Suite fails to identify the phone. I tried using both LGE Android Net MTP USB Device and MTP USB Device but they both fail. I have LG United Drivers and LG Suite installed already.
got thesame problem here mate..i search all over here and google the driver but still cant find any solution..this is so frustrating to fix this issue,,got install and uninstall the pc suite and driver many times but still cant get the solution..so what could be the fix????
no one can suggest..someone told me that maybe its causing the broken data cable but i have 3 cables now..
everytime i intend to install the MTP driver thing my pc always failed to do so,,saying that the filename, directory name or syntax label is incorrect..but i manually direct the search to lg driver folder but same error occurs..or there still other alternative apps that can transfer files without removing my sd to my phone,or atleast transfer files over the wifi..??
Any fix for this one? Already tried uninstalling, installing LG drivers, removed and reinserted SD card and everything. But still to no avail. It installs everything successfully EXCEPT USB MTP device which is the one I needed the most. Any solutions? Thanks!

You must be on 64 bit windows. Not even on 64bit, Still try this...
1) Uninstall LG Drivers, LG PC Suite and anything you see named LG. Restart PC.
2) Install latest LG Driver from this post (step 4)
3) Install Optional MTP Driver from this post (step 4)
4) Open Windows Device Manager (just to watch whats happening.)
5) Disconnect Internet (To avoid stupid online WDM drivers)
6) Connect phone with Usb and let drivers install automatically. Give it some time to install drivers keeping watch on Device Manager window.
7) Keep changing USB connect modes to all modes one-by-one on Phone and let drivers install.
You should see MTP drivers installed now. If this does not help, cant think of anything else. If this works, press THANKS button
EDIT: Connect USB at backside of pc, directly to USB on pc motherboard.

This works on XP x86
Need:
1. LG USB cable that came with the phone,
2. Media Player 10/11 preinstalled,
3. your LG Driver,
3. LG Phone,
4. and Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit (mtppk12.exe)
1. with phone disconnected install Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit
2. when asked to restart the PC, go ahead and restart
3. open device manager, connect phone to PC
4. install driver and watch LGE Android MTP disappear
5. be sure to toggle between Charge and MTP on the phone to install all drivers
this also works for HTC MTP

LG P769 can't connect by USB

I recently started to root my LG phone but it failed throughout the process. Now everytime I connect my phone via USB to my computer charges my phone but my computer won't show it or read my phone like it is not connected nor will my phone say it is connected to my computer. I have the drivers downloaded. Is there a way to fix it?

In 1990 to 2002 we have been using Serial Ports (COM1, COM2) and Parallel Ports(LPT1) for devices and they never gave connect problems like USB gives. USB works for some time and then the driver gets damaged or devices not recognized due to Voltage Problems, etc etc.
USB problems are very common these days. First thing you should try is, UNINSTALL DRIVER from PC and Restart PC. Connect PC to Internet, then reinstall latest LG Android Driver and connect phone with USB. Phone will install drivers for Slow Charging mode,...
...then select usb mode to PTP, phone will install driver for PTP,
...then select usb mode to MTP, phone will install driver for MTP,
...then select usb mode to LG Software Mode, phone will install driver for LG Sorftware Mode.
Now your phone is set for every mode you need. Hope this helps

[Help] PC unable to connect to Honor 9

Hi,
After the most recent update (OTA), when I connect my phone to my PC, regardless of what mode I have the USB set for on the phone, I can no longer connect
to my phone.
It worked flawlessly before.
The Huawei HiSuite also cannot connect (although I don't norm ally use that anyway).
I have tried reinstalling ADB and also HiSuite to no avail.
One thing I do notice is that there was a HDB driver missing. When I rebooted my PC it has now changed to 'USB Composite device' but shows the error
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
{Bad Image}
%hs is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0x
I've tried to automatically install a driver, again no joy. (Because the device is not recognised, it just says it could not a find a suitable driver).
If I uninstall the device and then plug my phone back in we then start with the HDB device (for which there is no driver according to MS), which upon reboot becomes the 'USB Composite device' again.
So, anyone know how I can fix this? I'd like access to my phone through my PC if possible.
TIA (Thanks in Advance)
I know it's obvious, but have you tried a different usb port.

Yes. Front and back of PC as well through a hub.
It makes a sound like it connects, then I get a popup on my phone "Charge only / Transfer files / Transfer photos" and regardless of which one I select, it then disconnects.
Somewhat annoying. It worked okay before latest update.
I've even reinstalled ADB, even though I'm fairly certain this has nothing to do with it.
Thanks for your reply anyway!
[Solved]
I managed to solve this by plugging in my Honor 9. On the device manager page in Windows take a look at the 'USB Composite Device' item and selecting with an exclamation mark against it and right click it and select"Uninstall device" from the menu. When it asks to remove the driver, select yes. Unplug your phone. Reboot your PC. Upon plugging your phone back in, your device will be re-detected and Windows will install the driver correctly.
