Once call forwarding or remote connection has been established it is not necessary to keep the mobile data connections on either the phone or watch. The remote setup has been worked out through your cellular provider and there isn't a need to keep data on if you don't need them.
This must be done every time to get it working. I'm using both a tmobile bought gear S and note 4. It all works brilliantly.

Hello I'm having great problems with remote connection. All I get is error message when I try to activate it. all it says is error has occurred please try again. I have note 4 and tmobile. I'm stuck and been researching for 2 days now. Any ideas?

Redo call forwarding setup both on gear manager and watch itself
Mine takes 2-4 tries to connect but after that its flawless
It has to have remote connection first to do the call forwarding
Any ideas?

I am nor completely clear.....are you saying that each time you know you will be leaving your phone at home, you must manually set up Remote Connection and then turn it off when you reconnect to the watch via bluetooth? I thought is was supposed to be automatic. Also, does this Remote Connection require a data plan to allow it to function? I am in Canada and none of the carriers have a "wearable plan". I just purchased a prepaid nanoSIM from Rogers and signed up for a talk & text plan but no data and I don't want to be paying big $ for data if the watch requires data to function with Remote Connection. HELP!

As far as I'm aware there are actually two separate issues to consider here.
1) If you turn on Call Forwarding in the Gear Manager app on your phone, then calls to your phone (using your phone number) will ring on your watch when not connected through Bluetooth (by being forwarded to your watch #). This is simply call forwarding and all you need is a watch plan that allows voice; no data plan required. You would normally use this when you want to leave the phone at home and receive calls on your watch while you're out, etc. The forwarding isnt automatic, you turn it on or off as required in Gear Manager.
2) If you have a plan that allows data (or have access to a wifi connection) then you will be able to receive texts and all notifications from your phone on your watch when connected remotely. You won't be able to receive calls in real time with only a data plan though, unless you also have a voice plan and forward calls as per #1 above. On the bright side, you will still get the missed call notification if your watch plan allows data, so while you can't answer the call you can always call them back right away. Data plans (or wifi) allow for the remote connection to your phone when out of bluetooth range. This remote connection is possible because without bluetooth, the phone and watch can only sync up through your Samsung account, which is why they need some sort of data connection. Once you've set everything up on your phone and watch, the remote connection will happen autonatically within 60 seconds of losing bluetooth connectivity.

Thanks for the clarification. I currently only have the Talk & Text plan so I will have to see how much data is used to push the information. I may have to get a data plan as well.

I just got the watch today and have been searching and trying to find tips on it...
If I am connected via bluetooth.. why does my watch not ring? I thought I could pretty much leave my phone in my pocket all day and do everything through the watch (receive calls and what not). I notice the "messages" app ONLY has messages in there sent from the watch itself. If I get a text message I can view it (not reply..) and it does not show up on the actual watch texts... ideas?

I just have a question. Lets assume we do have a phone with SIM-A and the Watch with SIM-B. They are connected via bluetooth and for a reason, bluetooth connection get lost. Theoretically, the calls from SIM-A should be diverted to SIM-B. Automatically. Correct?
Because, practically, I am trying this with the Galaxy S7 edge with two sims (SM-G935FD) and it is not working. I got only missed-call notification. The call is not diverted and the phone is still ringing. However, I can do it manually, which of course is not as advertised.

So ive had thd gear for 2 days and im confused. When using my note 4, if i left the phone home i thougjt the watch woild act as tye same number etc when out and about. They tout that yoi dont have to give out a seperate number etc. Was i wrong on this account.
It should if the Gear S can connect to your phone remotely. There are know bugs that if you leave Gear WiFi on, it may not connect to your phone reliably.
How do connect remotely and shut the WiFi off. T-Mobile told me it wouldn't work

Did you enable call forwarding so when your bluetooth is out of range it will go into call forward mode ie calls/text from note 4 you want standalone use gear only mode

You can set it up for when you call from Gs To display note 4 number or Gs number . But if you are in gear only mode then yes you will call from the watch number

When you BT connected to the phone, the cell radio on the watch is forced off. You can't receive SMS or calls from your watch number. All calls go straight to voicemail. This is true regardless if you setup auto call forwarding or not.
So, don't give out your watch number.
Well that's a bummer. I really wanted to make calls independent of the phone and have my main number show up
You still can. Just turn off the BT and let it remote connect to the phone. You trade off the battery life and a few features (that won't work without BT connection) for the sake of independent phone radio.

It can be configured on the watch for what outgoing number it shows.
I enabled call forwarding on the watch and gear managerband now if I'm out of range from the note 4 the watch connects remotely.
Then when I make a call or send a text it shows up on my wife's phone as coming from the Note 4 number and not the watches own number.
Just make sure that WiFi on the watch is switched off and call forwarding enabled on both the watch and in gear manager app.

Whenever I'm connected remotely, the outgoing call number is my watch's phone number and not my phone. When I'm connected via Bluetooth, it's the phone's number. I have played with the settings and have call forwarding on in both areas. My text messages show as my cell phone even when remotely connected just not outgoing calls. I'm getting a little frustrated as I want to leave the phone home sometimes and I don't want people to have a different number. I can't change this setting when connected remotely as its grayed out.

I tried it. The number is set as my gear's number and it is grayed out so that I can't change it. Maybe this is a limitation of AT&T's network. It might not be able to place a call as another number remotely. This works for messages, just not for calls. This is somewhat disappointing as it negates the idea of not giving out another number when you leave your phone behind. If I ever call anyone, they will have no idea who it is.

I only receive text message sent to the phone's number (Google Voice forwarding to the watch phone number) when the device is disconnected from its bluetooth connection to the phone.
This is probably because the watch is connected via Bluetooth to the phone, and not to mobile networks. I thought I read that Samsung had set up special servers to deal with this and other issues?
Is there any way to have txt messages reliably sent directly to the watch when the watch is connected via bluetooth or wifi? (not mobile networks). Or will I have to turn on mobile network connection permanently (battery drain).
(As for why I don't have Google Voice notifications sent to the watch from the phone, it's because they can't be replied to from within the watch while Txt messages can.)
You'll have to have the 4G mobile network turned on all the time. This is the only way that the phone can receive a text sent to it's mobile number. If the Gear S is connected to Bluetooth or wifi then there is no way for the SIM to connect to AT&T's network and receive a text.
Another option may be if you have GV forwarding texts to your phone's mobile number, and you use the default SMS app then the text will be forwarded to the watch when the phone and the watch (Via WiFi) both have a data connection via remote connection.

Thanks. Yes, I'd considered forwarding GV texts to the phone's number, but that kind of defeats the purpose of using GV for texts.
I suppose I could disable the messaging app's notifications on the phone so as not to get double notifications on the phone every time a txt arrives. But would that prevent the watch from getting notifications as well? I'll have to give it at try.
Just switch "Gear Network" under settings to "Always On" rather than "Auto Switch" and it will solve this issue. Putting it to "Always On" will leave your Gear S's cell network connected while paired with your phone over bluetooth.

Yes, I've figured that out, but leaving mobile networks on all the time drains the battery much more quickly.
The best option is probably a custom notifications app that allows response to Google Voice messaging.
I'm using different SIM cards, with different numbers, on the Android and on the Gear S. The Gear S is set to use the Gear number for calls and for SMS sending. If I send an SMS to the Gear number, it always arrives there. If I try to send (compose or reply) an SMS message from the Gear, then:
* 99% of the cases it gives a timeout and is not sent
* if I quickly put the Gear in airplane mode, then turn airplane mode off, then send immediately the SMS, is is always sent
Any hints? Does anybody have issues with SMS sending (originating from the Gear, not proxied via the phone)?

The watch is not connected via BT when this happens, and the 3G is always on. I made sure it only has the 3G connection and it is set to use the Gear number ...
Then you probably have SIM card or account setup issue not related to Watch itself. I don't know which region your watch is from. Here in US, my AT&T version won't allow sending text message from watch's radio using another number. It has to be the number of the watch itself. Security restrictions from the carrier I guess.

Did that too, forced the operator to send the configuration again to the Gear number, received it on the Gear, approved the setup, got the MMS and internet APNs updated ... the Gear sends SMSs from its own number, and it works for a couple of minutes after it is out of airplane mode, then stops working. It can also receive messages anytime, without any problems - so it must be something else. Since I seem to be alone having this issue, I will probably reflash and reinstall, maybe it fixes itself
I'm having almost the same problem except with calls --- texts go through fine both ways, but I can only receive calls, when I try to make an outgoing call on the gear in standalone mode (phone not connected) it says either "unexpected response" or "emergency calls only" I think it could be a firmware bug as I found two firmware updates I'd missed (will test it tomorrow, currently a storm so no ATT reception here) but make sure your firmware is latest version, if it's not, update it and try again.
i'm on the latest fw, take care, you may lose text messages too

Though in my case, after updating the firmware it works perfectly for calls/texts now! Data doesn't work, but I don't really need that (I have an unlimited plan on my phone and excellent reception usually, the gear's tiny plan ($10/3 months) is just for those odd times when I forget my phone or it's battery dies, or it has no reception and I *have* to make a call --- to date not had a problem like that in 10 years, but peace of mind for $3/month is worth it )

You only use voice, text, and data on the Gear's plan when it's not connected to your phone via BT. If not on BT it has access to Internet and carrier data and uses Internet first unless there's a signal issue where it'll fall back to carrier data. It works just like your phone because it is a phone. When connected via BT calls and texts you create on the Gear are passed through to your phone so that's which plan applies. In that situation the phone's (not the Gear's) phone number is used/displayed. If not connected to BT the Gear's separate phone number is used/displayed and its plan will be charged for voice, text, and (carrier) data.
How much carrier data the Gear uses depends on how often it's not connected to your phone, how often it is connected to the Internet, and which apps you use on it. Streaming Milk in stand alone mode will use a nice chunk of data.
I have a 10MB data plan for my gear. so far i havent gone over it, but havent checked the actual usage. most of the time the gear is connected by BT. usually on the weekends i use it stand alone for texting.
I have a 100 mb data plan.. the maximum I have used in a month is 30 mb
My Gear S uses less than 1MB/mth and my phone about 2. Its rare I am not on WiFi with my phone and I don't stream music or video with my Gear S. I next to never take my phone with me so my Gear S is on data off and on all day long. Email gets forwarded to my watch but without attachments so it takes very little data.
I have 20mb plan and usually with just the remote connectivity i never go over that. And a little tip...have the phone use edge and your battery consumption when remotely connected will almost be like Bluetooth. You don't need 3G speeds for the fowarding of your notifications from your phone.

Does anyone know how to disable annoying popup messages related to Mobil Data while connected to WIFI? Here's the background; I used to be with Verizon and was one of the treasured unlimited data participants until they recently decided to once again screw their most loyal customers with increases on costs. I left VZW and went to Straight Talk utilizing the 4G LTE Verizon network. Before under VZW, I don't remember my wife's phone showing a message that she could not browse the internet, send email, etc, unless connected to data with the exception of using WIFI. Well since switching over to ST, I've created Tasker Profiles which simulate Juice Defender and turn off mobile data as soon as it is connected to our home WIFI. About every two minutes it popups a messages saying the following:

Mobile data
Message Content:
Unless you use WI-FI, you will no linger be able to use the Internet, Email or other apps that require a data connection.
Turn off the mobile data connection?
I've attached a screenshot of the message.
How can I disable to popup? I'm sure there's a way to do if someone can point me in the right direction.... Thanks
I should also clarify that the popup returns regardless if you select Okay or Cancel. I even enable Data and still returns.
I found this thread which apparently the issue seems to be related to apps that turn off data or turn it on using automation.
