[Q] Extracting data from Wildfire S with unresponsive touchscreen - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apologies if this is not the right place to ask this - I'm new to forum.xda-developers.com.
I dropped my old HTC Wildfire S and the screen cracked in such a way that I can still see what's on the screen, but it's unresponsive so I can't interact with it (can't even swipe to unlock the screen).
I've bought a new phone and moved the SIM and micro SD card across, but to my dismay found that some of my data must have been stored on the phone, not on the SIM or SD. Most important is my contacts/phonebook (no, they're not in my Google Contacts list either).
I just connected it to my (Ubuntu 12.04) laptop and of course it just goes into 'Charge Mode' - this is normal - I always did have to tell the phone to connect in data mode in order to be able to access files on there, but of course I can't do that now because the touchscreen won't respond.
If anyone has any advice on any of the following then I'd be most grateful:
a) how to force the usb connection into data mode rather than just charge mode
b) whether I'll be able to access the phone's contacts file/directory/? even if I can access the phone in data mode, and how to do this
c) if I'm asking in the wrong place, any advice on a better forum to place this question.
I'm afraid I have no idea what version of the Android OS is on there, but it's a few years old. I never did any development on there, so it's not rooted or anything like that.
Many thanks.

[Q] Recovering data from a Galaxy S3 with damaged screen?

Yesterday I dropped my Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 softly on the floor, but immediately I noticed that there was a problem with the screen: the glass was not broken, but colours were abnormally green, with a horizontal white line at the top of the screen, and a little circular dead zone in the upper left corner. I could still use it. But a few hours later, the light intensity of the screen had progressively and drastically decreased, and the phone could no longer be used. Today, the screen is totally black…
All data was saved on the external card, and I thought that Gmail synchronization would have saved my agenda. So initially, it did not seem like a too big problem, except for the cost of screen replacement, but when I realized that my calendar synchronization had not been not properly configured, the problem suddenly became more serious! My main problem is now data, not screen!
When the phone is on, and connected to my PC via an USB cable, I can only access two folders on the phone: “Card” and “Phone” (the external card is still in the phone). I have the original ROM, the phone is not rooted.
Do you think that my calendar data is there somewhere? I don’t know where to find it.
I’m afraid that all data will be lost if I send back my phone to the reseller's after sales service.
Alternatively, is there a mean, with an HDMI adapter and an external screen, to use the phone anyway: only the display does not work, the rest of the phone seems OK. The touch screen still worked fine yesterday, when I could still see something. Will I see anything on the TV when touching the phone screen? It would be wonderful if I could just reconfigure my synchronization, in spite of that black screen, and thus recover my agenda data via my Gmail account, before sending the phone to the after sales service.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Search exact same question been asked before and i believe a workaround was found .

You can use ADB to make a backup of all your apps + data. However USB Debugging must be enabled for this to work. Is it enabled on your device?
If yes, there are a lot of guides on how to backup your phone`s content such as Apps + Data.
One such guide is this: http://www.thesuperusersguide.com/adb-backup--restore.html
No, I had not activated "ADB debugging" and without screen, it seems a little bit difficult to do it now, thus precluding "ADB" use. That's why I was wondering if there was a possibility to use the phone with an external screen via a MHL-HDMI adapter, assuming the touch screen still works… Any idea?
yes, just do that. you can also access adb from recovery without having to enable anything
I am now pretty sure that touch screen is OK. Even if I don't see anything, swiping the screen to unlock it produces the usual sound. So I won’t do anything until I get a MHL HDMI adapter. I think it is the simplest way, if that works… I keep you informed in a few days. Many thanks

[Q] Phone won't boot, blue led stays on

Edit: Please lock or delete this thread. I've reposted the question in the correct forum.
Hi everyone,
This is my first post and I hope I won't somehow piss anyone off. I'm just looking for a little advice or guidance.
Device: SPH-D710 Samsung Galaxy S2 on Sprint (CDMA). It was running the latest over the air ICS update. It was not rooted.
Background: Starting about a month ago the phone began to occasionally restart on its own. Also, my clock widget began to disappear randomly, no matter how many times I would put it back on the screen. Would occasionally crash on resource heavy apps like chrome or facebook.
Problem: While running an app the phone crashed. I pulled the battery and restarted it. It never booted. The screen remains completely black and the blue LED light stays on. I've tested a different battery, it wasn't the problem. I've plugged it into my computer and it does not see the device.
Question: I'm pretty sure this phone is bricked but would love confirmation (whether you can confirm or tell me how I can confirm). What I really care about is being able to access the data that was on the phone. Is there any way I can access the data? The sprint store said it would be 50 bucks to look at it and if they can't fix it they would get me a new phone. I really don't care about a new phone. Is there anything that they can do to recover my data that I can't?
Basically, is there anything I can do to access the internal memory files? (Secondary question is can I fix the phone).
Thank you in advance for your input and excuse me if I haven't followed all common etiquette on this forum. (I did search the topic).
Hello wukilaflee
Can you access the download or recovery mode of your phone? Take a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II_Series At some point it says to activate "USB debugging". Since your phone doesn't boot up just try the key combination. Please report in which modes your phone boots up.
To partially answer the question of your files/data: If you used an external sd-card you can pull it out of the phone and put it into your computer (maybe you need an adapter). But most of the files will be on the internal storage of the phone. That's the tricky part. But first of all answer the question above. If it boots in download/recovery phone I'm pretty sure that it's not totally bricked

Hello Experience7, the OP clearly states they've realised they posted in the wrong forum & has now re-posted to the correct forum.
Sorry, I thought this is already the "moved" post. Thanks.

[Q] MESSED UP MY CHINESE AVA v500 Wipe out dosent fix it

Greeting developers (excuse my messed up grammar, non native speaker here)...!! (also a noob)
I was trying to configure the VPN settings for my chinese AVA v500 smartphone, i rooted it (with some chinese software) and it was just peaches. Then i partitioned the SD card to help the RAM with Link2SD app. Using this app i started moving some apps and system parts to the SD card in order to make it faster ( i assume) but then, something terrible happened.. My desktop screen went pitch black. I mean, it dosent rotate nor anything, and dosen`t show any icon or else. On the other hand, the upper slide screen (wifi, 3g, silence, and bluetooth) still works, i the phone calls still get in, i can access only to the USB config (NOT the debbugging setting, only the USB docking, USB storage and so...)
Ok then, my chellphone as i said was just rooted, so i had this "Terminal" app (sort of MSDos) and i hitted Reboot Recovery, it went to the recovery screen, did the wipe out thing, and went just well, but it still the same, black screen with nothing but the USB options and the sliding menu available. The chinese program i mentioned before had this sort of feature where when i plugged the smartphone to the PC. i popped out some screen with some chinese sit on it, i could recognize the icon of the ESfiles or explorer, but now i cant even do that, or access the internet anyhow.
I've been looking around on the internet for options but all i see demands, or Debugging mode, internet, or any sort of app instaled on the phone...
So guys, this is the thing, i need a solution that only involves my laptop, a USB wire, and a half dead chinese smartphone.
Extra difficulty: it's my girlfriend cellphone, wich i just bought her. and she is going to be soooooo damn mad at me... so the faster the better...
REGARDS, DEVELOPERS...!!

[Q] Recover data from a dead screen device

Hello,
My friend's Z2 was faulty and the screen died while taking a picture underwater.
The device appears to still be running normally but the screen is completely dead, no display, no touch response.
The device has a swipe lock code set which is preventing her from accessing the data when the phone is plugged into a computer.
Sony is saying they can't fix it without clearing the data and local fix-it shops are saying they can't fix the screen.
Is there anything that can be done to remotely unlock it so we can access the data from a computer?
Cheers for the help! :fingers-crossed:

Hm, quite a conundrum.
Well it depends what you mean by "data"
If you mean the files on the internal drive and not contacts or any user data at all.. You should be able to flash a new ROM using fastboot mode. How to do that is here.
Important information to avoid formatting internal sd card: This process will delete the internal SD Card if WIPE (USER)DATA or any PARTITION option is chosen.
After doing that, when the device restarts you should be able to simply connect (or keep connected) the microUSB cable and it'll show up on your PC the files on the phone.
Provided of course you have all your drivers in order, if you don't... Well here's a few links: 1 2

[Q] Broke my Android's Screen, its blank now. How can I transfer things to new phone?

Hi,,,
I recently broke my Galaxy S4 screen and its not responsive anymore. It doesn't work and doesnt show anything. Blank screen.
I bought a new Oneplus One and I want to transfer all my data from my old phone. Contacts were 30% saved to the device and 20% were to my sim card and the rest were on my Samsung account so its a bit messy. I dont have an SD card so everything is on the internal storage for my phone. I also would like to transfer my apps cache data.. like whatsapp's groups and contact's chat history.
I never hooked my phone up to my PC so my PC doesnt recognize it when I connect it. I don't really want to fix my screen for 100$ in order to transfer all my stuff to my new phone I also cannot unlock my screen cause the screen doesn't work, I do know the pattern though. just saying
So I cant back up using the USB hub, neither can I do anything to the phone because the screen doesn't work and is blank. Is there anyway I can "bypass" the lock screen and force the phone to connect to the PC in order to transfer my stuff to my new phone?
Please help
