I've been really struggling all day trying to adb push a file into my phone, specifically /system/media/audio/ui .
My phone is the Verizon Galaxy S4 - VRUFNC5 - 4.4.2 - Running the HyperDrive ROM v19.0.
I rooted via Towelroot, I'm running SafeStrap Recovery, I have SuperSU v2.16, ES File Explorer 3.2.3.1, and Busybox v1.22.1-Stericson
No matter how I try to achieve read/write through adb shell, nothing has been successful. I have also attempted to go into ES File Explorer>Root Explorer>Mount R/W , however this still does not work. This both doesn't enable me to push files into the /ui folder, and while ES Explorer can try to copy files into it, they end up corrupting.
When I say corrupting, I mean that before copying a .ogg file, it will play via the sound player, but after copying/pasting into /ui, it will not play. Trying to "cp" or "busybox cp" the file from the sdcard into /system/media/audio/ui produces the same corrupted result.
Just an example of a code I've tried to enter in adb shell after su: "mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock03 /system" or "mount -o rw,remount /system/media/audio/ui /system" and/or "chmod 777 system/media/audio/ui"
Can someone please help me out? I've never had this much trouble trying to customize my phone before.

There are some Google Play apps that supposedly fix the issue but I had mixed results with them. For now I'm using an Xposed module on Empty Galaxy that is working well.

Hi,
I am trying to alter the boot xml file to get my boot sound back. I am on Modaco 2.5.1 now.
Pulled the boot sound xml file, edited. But when I try push back to phone I get the 'android adb push read-only file system' message.
How do I get round this?

i'm having the same error when i want to delete stock apps. i'm rooted already, but not sure how to get myself to read write rights. any idea?

adb remount
"remount failed: Operation not permitted"
you cant do it while in recovery,you have to be booted up.
EXAMPLE to remove Sim Toolkit
adb remount
remount successful
adb shell rm /system/app/Stk.apk
Done...
If you still have problems type adb shell, type su,press allow on your phone screen then try again.
If it shows a $ sign when u type adb shell then u got no root son

sorry but i am quite new to android and rootin... can u please tell me what is recovery and what is boot up.. cause i am facing teh same issue and when i try adb remount from my command prompt, i get permission denied error . Can this also be done from terminal emulator in android.. my device is rooted and i have superuser permission..

Samsung Galaxy Ace - FroYo 2.2.1 - Rooted with superuser.
Pulled framework.jar from /system/framework/framework.jar
edited it and now pushing back.
I get
failed to copy 'framework.jar' to '/system/framework/framework.jar': Read-only file system.
I know it's a read-only file system, but I need to push that (and other files) back there.
How to allow that process?
My other option is to "FLASH" a .zip file which contains these files, and I think that puts them in their desired location, but:
What is Flashing and how is it done on my device? I've been googling for a couple hours now with no luck. Adobe Flash is taking all the search results, and some found forum entries aren't helping.

Hi, same problem trying to push some libs and framework.jar back to where they originally pulled from. I need to do that for Arabization on Samsung Galaxy Ace running Froyo 2.2.1 with Root.
Error returs "failed: read-only file system"
I've beek googling and searching forums for a couple days now with no luck. Tried many things, commands and chmod which all failed.
The other option, which is to use update.zip on stock recovery to send the files home has failed. Got the following:

Installing upate...
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 0)
Installation aborted.
I couldn't install ClockworkMod to try it there because Rom Manager does not list my phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace) in the options it gives me when I ask it to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery into my phone. I don't know which phone to choose form the list:
- Huawei Pulse Mini
- Dell Streak
- Huawei Pulse
- Commtiva Z71 (Boston, blaze, and more)
- Geeksphone ONE
- Spice MI700, Commtiva Link N700 and more)

#mount -o rw,remount /system
does not help. Trying to copy files using 'cp' commant in shell now simply brings 'file exists'. Is there an 'overwrite' attribute to add that'll fix it?

I am trying to root an elocity A7 and I pretty new at this. I installed root explorer but the mount r/w button does not work in the system folder. I tried the terminal command below but it does not seem to accept the command. I get back a message that says shows Usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options [-t type] device directory. I retried root explorer and still can't write. Thanks for any help.
- open Terminal emulator:
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw /system
- open Root Explorer \system folder and press r/w
adb remount
or search the market for "mount system"
I'm not following how to use adb remount. What would be the complete command line? Also, I can't get to the market which is why I am trying this. I read it on another thread here.

my rom is stock but got a version that used zpst to force magisk to allow root, root is good but cant move 1 app to system without read only i tried this it says it worked but when i try to move it says i dont have permission .. guessing there isnt a recovery for this model the z835
cannot edit build.prop. i get an error when trying to edit it with es file explorer (there was an error when trying to save this file.)
any help? ive edited it before, but i dont know how. im pretty sure i did it this way but im not sure why its not saving properly this time.

Copy it to another folder edit the copy and then move the edited file in the correct folder.
tried that already, didnt work. got another error
I use Root Explorer to do any editing.
Any other suggestions? I'd rather not have to pay for it

If the build.prop you want to edit is in /system, then you'll have to mount /system read-write before you can modify any files there:

$ su [I]Become superuser. Prompt will change to '#'.[/I]
# /system/xbin/mount -w -o remount /system
[I]Edit the file[/I]
# /system/xbin/mount -r -o remount /system
You must have the Superuser app from Market and busybox installed on the gTablet for the commands to work. If you can't edit the file in ES File Explorer because of permission errors, copy the file into /mnt/sdcard via the command line, edit it there (or on the PC after removing the card), then move it back into place in /system and restore the old permissions:

[I]a) The build.prop file in /mnt/sdcard should be editable now in ES File Explorer.
Edit the file, then do:

Did you have ES file explorer in Root mode?
In Es file explorer
Settings->Root Options -> both boxes checked, (HiAPK mode for first box)
I usually copy the file to sdcard and modify it, get ES explorer in root mode and copy it back. Do a backup before, in case you mess it up.
I usually use a terminal in su mode for editiing/copying, but that might not be needed.

if i use CM Mod, i cant see any files. if i use HiAPK, all the files have -rw and a lot of stuff before it and i cant read anything, but it does mount. CW had problems mounting the drive. im gonna try out the terminal commands

instead of plain 'mv'. The default Android mv command is idiotically implemented. (See this post if you're interested in the details):

thanks so much again. i finally got it to work, but i just wanted to get netflix to work, and it still doesnt. after all that work. ugh.

Thanks, I tried two other applications and they didn't work. Was able to edit with Root Explorer. didnt fix the Netflix playback. Bummer.
***** changing the Nexus S to HTC Vision and samsung to HTC did the trick.
Root explorer will work, and is a great app. Worht the money.
Also, ADB from a PC will work as well. Just install the android sdk and use ADB.
From windows cmd prompts the commands are just adb remount (to remount as root) then "adb pull /system/build.prop" (this will pull it to the sdk platform-tools folder that adb.exe is in) and then edit to your hearts delite.
"adb push build.prop /system/build.prop" to send it back.
I was able to use ES File System by unchecking the Mount File System option in the Root options menu and then rechecking it. I imagine that it forced a remount of the file system in a writable mode.
This worked on our nabi big tab hd24
We now have true multiuser, where everyone has their own login, files, emails, bookmarks, web history, etc; as it should be.
I first did a factory reset, then installed kingo root, then another reset, did the build prop edit this suggested (es file explorer did not work) but build prop editor did....
We now have the nabi big tab hd 24 running as our primary desktop workstation computer...
No we just wish for a room update to be made available with the latest version of Android.
4.4.2 is getting old, and as is common little manufacturer long term support...
i have wildfire S-OFF and root, using CM7 stable,i installed super manager, gave it superuser permissions,set busybox path to system/xbin,gave R/W acces to system, and tried to copy bootanimation.zip to both data/local and system/media... but when i paste super manager always says not enough free space... but i doubt thats the issue cause the animation is just a few kbs...after it says not enough free space it the sign goes away and the bootanimation.zip appears in the directory as it was copied there but when i reboot i dont have the animation just blank screen.. i tried everything and i dont really have a clue whats wrong
can anyone help me please?
you need to copy the file as root, which means your file manager should have asked for permission. if you cant get it to work you can just fire up a terminal on your phone and run the following commands
su
cp <path to bootanimation you want to use> /system/media/bootanimation.zip
Or via ADB
(Place the bootanimation.zip to where you have adb)
Open up command prompt
cd (location of your adb)
adb shell
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3
# chmod 777 /system
exit
adb push bootanimation.zip data/local

I rooted with kingroot, root checker says I have my phone rooted and i even managed to uninstall some apps like google movies and google music who were just wasting space but now I can't do anything because it only shows as read only and can't change to read/ write.
I have tried with

make sure that u still have root access on ur device
