Is there a file manager that can reside on the Gear S and perform the usual functions not requiring root?
What are you trying to do? You can always connect the watch to your laptop and move files around using your file manager on your laptop
How can I tell how much memory is being used? I don't want to connect it to a computer (all mine are mac anyway).

Another reason to have one.
Is anyone thinking of working on it? How easy is it to do with the SDK?
There is a paid app called "FilesGear". It works very well.
It is a file manager or is for transferring files between the Gear S and a pc?

No, it is a file manager for the Gear S. You access it from the watch and manage files on the watch.
I don't use anything between the watch and the PC. I transfer files from my phone to the watch and can then manage them on the watch (copy/delete/rename etc).

You don't need a rooted phone.
One app enables you to send files to your watch from your phone. The other app lets you manage files on your watch.
No root needed.
I need to be cleared. Is this app worth the cost when the watch is unrooted and cannot affect the system files?

I have no idea what you're talking about.
Root or no root is irrelevant. It makes no difference.
The app costs less than a cup of coffee. Your Gear S and mobile device cost about 600 times the cost of the app.
Read the app descriptions and decide for yourself. Stop talking about not being rooted, it is about as relevant as asking if the app is worth the cost if you use a screen protector.
There are now a few file mangers in the app store(Samsung gear app) paid apps for now

Well said!
Why is this forum full of idiots? I thought XDA was for techie types, and anyone buying a device like the Gear S would be fairly intelegent. I'm constantly amazed how dumb Gear S owners seem to be.
If most files can not be changed due to lack of root, then that diminishs the usefulness of an lspp. Add a cost and again it may not be worth it.
I give up. You clearly have no idea about files, permissions, root, file managers or much else.
any apps that let me browse and interact with my note edges files? mainly pics/vids and also music as the music control on the gear s is limited... thanks
In the app store existed Filemaster app and was pretty good, I have it installed in my gear 2. Today I wanted to download it for gear s and sadly I can't find it

SugarSync is the best syncronization solution i've tested so far
some of the features that attracted me mostly
- 5GB of free space (+ 500MB)
- sync the files between all the computers and devices
- music streaming
- photo sharing
If you register through my referral link you'll get an additional 500MB (I also get)

Or if you don't like the OP you can use the link in my sig. JK OP...don't take it seriously. The good thing about Sugarsync is you can get up to an extra 10GB. I think I am up to a total of 11GB right now, which is real cool for keeping files synced between my laptop, Asus Transformer and Evo 3D. The bad thing about it is they don't have native Linux support, but a third party is building a Linux client. It is in Alpha stage now and you can get more info here: http://mwillis.co.uk/projects/sugarsync-linux-client/
I've been trying this for a while but can't decide which I like better.
I have carbonite already for full backup.
I've used dropbox forever and my wife actually likes it because it a folder in the my documents folder so she can just go in and out of there for shared files.
If I wanted to use sugarsync for full backup, it would cost alot more than carbonite so I'm just not sure if its worth the switch unless there are other features I'm missing.

I'm thinking so too. It's a nice setup but I think the size is the issue for me.
I'll keep playing with it though...I like the idea of putting sync and backup together but just not sure if it fits my particular needs. Nice program...
thanks op, my dropbox just maxxed out...enjoy the extra 500mb.i know i will...just need that native linux client. until then wine will do.
thanks again.
I don't know about sugar sync, haven't used it in a while (year maybe) but I remember it not working well when I tried it. I use dropbox religiously and couldn't live without it. Seems like sugarsync keps crashing on me and not syncing properly. Maybe it's been fixed and I should give it another go. My dropbox is almost full...
Does sugarsync have the option of using revision history? Can you go back a few days and grab an older version of a document you changed?

I'm using the MarketAccess app with latest market version and it works flawless. I did not liked the original icon and also the fact that the icon title was not spanning properly on the screen. So I edited the original .apk and replaced the icon as well the title.

Is there any basic guide on how to best use this?
MarketAccess is a branch of MarketEnabler. Personally, I use its very basic function.
With the Market closed, I go to:
Market Access > Providers > T-Mobile
Then, I open the Market and install any US restricted apps. Once I'm done with it, I reboot the phone and the default settings are automatically restored. As I said, pretty simple and basic.
From what I understood, you did not create this, (correct me if I'm wrong ) therefore it doesnt belong in the development section

What kind of useful apps are US only?
My favorite are:
Amazon Mobile
Google Books
Google Music
Google TV Remote
Netflix
Not sure if Books are now open to everyone, they just added Google Videos to Canada.
Personally, I live 45min from the US border and I have an US address/credit card. We have Netflix in Canada but the selection really sucks, compared to US.
I use a E4200 DD-WRT router as PPTP server with US IP's to all my devices (Google TV, mobile, tablet, etc.) when I'm at home. For example, you need an US IP to upload your music to Google Music site but you can use any IP to download/broadcast Music/Video's to any of your mobile devices. I know is not easy, but is worth the trouble. It really sucks that we have all those restrictions.
At least I can get all my music anywhere, without taking any space on my mobile.

Credit is clearly given into OP, I certainly hope is not going to ruin your day.
I saw many mods posted here (if you can call my change a mod... took me 2min to modify the APK), so I think is the best place for it, since is not related to Original Android development.
MOD = modification of an existing application created by someone else
There are tons of MOD threads listed in this forum, from what I saw.
Still, if I'm wrong, please let me know what would the the appropriate forum so I post there next time.
Cheers
Mate it seems to be working partially with the new market 3.1.5
You can see the currency changed to USD but you can't see the regional apps.
Could someone confirm this ?
Thanks.
It's true. I found a trick for this maybe it's too much of a headache but if you want to use new market then what you have to do is
1. Install market access.
2. Go emulate say for example t mobile.
3. Go to settings/applications/manage/ and then uninstall the updates for market. .
4. So now you have the old market. Now open the market.
5. Then wait for some time. Since it is connected to t-mobile it will update to new market.
6. Now you can download all the apps you want with new market.
The thing is it only works till restart. Then you have to repeat all the steps again.
Big hassle I know but if you absolutely have to use the new market then this is one way. Cheers.
P. S. Simply use old market with market access and freeze market updater using titanium backup to avoid all the hassle and use US APPS.

Can you give me an example of app that does not work?
I'll test it on my phone with Market 3.1.5 and let you know guys. So far all apps worked for me, I'm in Canada.
Edit: I think I know why is probably not working for some of you.
You need an US IP address as Wi-Fi spot. My DD-WRT router is set as PPTP server and broadcasts an US IP through wireless as well wired connections. So when my phone connects to the market, it does it through an US IP. Using the VPN directly into phone will not cut it.

Supposedly we're getting some equivalent to google wallet, called Isis or something like that. There was a thread on it.
What I wanna know is could I copy my "Smartcard" for our local tram system and then use my phone in its place, one less thing to carry. The NFC chip can read it, but I dont know how to make it re-broadcast it(I assume host devices can act as clients?).
I use it to replace my tram / subway card ( not sure if it's legit ) and sharing contacts. Also, Bump.

That's not much help, is it? Yes, there's lots of information on Mifare, but you seem to be claiming that you're using your phone to emulate your physical cards. From what I understand of Android, that's not possible at this time (card emulation).

Another use for NFC is the ability to easily establish a connection/share credentials for Multiplayer games or file sharing, as a user you wouldn't need to bother enabling bluetooth or wifi and connecting with the other device or typing its IP address, you would just have to put the two devices side to side and the software would automatically exchange the IP address or establish the bluetooth connection
Many of the suggestions I've ran across so far were for local wifi streaming. Im looking to be able to watch something stored on my pc with my N4 away from home via mobile network. I have an unthrottled data plan, so nothing is overkill.

Ok I figured it out, and feel silly that it was under my nose this whole time. I hate when people figure out a problem without sharing the solution so I'll share for anybody with the same question in the future.
1. Download the Plex server (Plex for connected TVs and streaming devices): https://www.plex.tv/downloads
2. Invest $4.99 (well worth it) into the Plex app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
3. Setup the Plex server on your computer and enable the myPlex server. (see attachment)
Your app should discover your computer as if you're connected on the same network.

I never implied that you weren't going to share it, so my apologies if my wording seemed directed at you. My "not sharing" comment was directed to people that fix a problem they have without sharing a solution after the fact. By all means, I'd love to hear your method!
Other methods I ran across were a bit wonky. Plex offers the ability to change the bitrate of the videos I'm streaming, which was a major plus for me. The five bucks was well worth it. (having a gift card balance left over didn't hurt either.)
I still remember the first bitter feeling when I learned that I could not record the calls, I felt helpless: The companies could, and can, record me but I could not record them to avoid an injustice in the future.
I had a Huawei then, now a S23 Ultra, and discovered the following marvel:

This app only took a few kbbs and added the record button in the phone menu, it recorded in very good quality and solved my life.
Now searching for the Samsung I haven't found anything similar, but I'm sure we might find something similar in some Chinese file or from some random person.
I know what you are going to tell me, there is Cube ACR (but I refuse to give permission to the connector and have access to do whatever I want with my phone) and the change of CSC region to INS but I refuse to believe that something as simple as the file I left in the photo does not exist.

Although the app is not available on PlayStore, I downloaded it from their official website and it also asks for full access (connector) just like Cube ACR, which is too invasive.
While it requires that for the recording I have used it while blocking all internet connectivity to the app and it works just fine without internet therefore it's not collecting anything if it can't connect to the internet

It's an interesting option, although I'm not entirely convinced, as with access to the whole phone, any command could intermittently activate internet access.
Still, out of curiosity, how do you block an app from accessing the internet?

I use a combination of things. I have NextDNS on all of my devices including home wifi and set as private DNS on any device with that setting. I also use tracker control to block internet access to specific apps on device.
