Depends on the exact model. AT&T (G900A) and Verizon's S5s have the bootloader locked, but T-Mobile's (G900T) is not at this point. With TMO's S5 you can root and even install some ROMs without tripping Knox if you are careful. But if you install a custom recovery then Knox will trip. Although some say tripping Knox is not a problem. I tripped it when I installed Phil's touch recovery and have flashed many ROMs with no issues. I'm currently using Omega Rom and have no issues at all. I'm using a G900T on AT&T. The G900T has all the same frequencies and LTE bands as the G900A, plus a few special ones for TMO, but most importantly, no locked bootloader.

Agreed, I bricked my T-Mobile Galaxy gs3 doing these roms, lucky I found a place to unbrick it. Stick to the Samung development thread. For now.

[Q] Root SCH-I605MSAVZW Samsung Galaxy Note II (Verizon), 16GB Developer Edition

Bought the Samsung Galaxy NoteĀ® II (Verizon), 16GB Developer Edition.
Wanted to keep my unlimited data plan.
It is already unlocked, what is the best way to root it.
Model number: SCHI605
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version: 1605VRAMA4
Hardware version: I605.06
Thank you.
I don't know of a standalone root app. In the past there was the exynos cpu exploit app but that was for an older Verizon rom. Of course you could flash a rooted stock ROM like beanstown106's either odex and deodex rooted stock ROMs. Or you could flash a custom rom with root.
The good thing about beanstown106's roms are that they don't affect the bootloader. They won't lock it some other stock rooted roms will.
Ridin' a Note 2 blast

You can use the toolkit.

I was considering using the Toolkit, but it supports up to build AMC3. My build number is: JZO54K.I605YAMA5.

You could try it and see, other than that the only thing is the exynos exploit.

Would I be able to return it to its original state, if there is a problem?

If you have the original firmware I would say yes, there is even a possibility that you could use the alternative or root66 firmware, Roms, to get back to stock.
The S3 Dev edition had no problem getting back to stock using our Roms or even using any of our Roms and radios even though it's stock firmware was different. Im oretty sure the only thing that'd happen though is it would say process failed, it shouldn't mess your phone up.

This purchase may have been a mistake. what good is an unlocked bootloader, if there is no way to root without flashing?
I am contemplating returning it and taking the restocking fee hit.

New to the GS4

So im coming from the HTC DNA, just got my S4 today. Rooted and unlocked already. Is there a process to achieve s-off on galaxy devices like htc devices, or is it not needed for flashing radios, splash screens, etc...?

Verizon has it locked down if you're on ME7. No workaround yet.

Interesting. He said he was already rooted & "unlocked". I guess that means he has MDK & has Lokied. So first he needs to be cautioned to not take the ME7 update. As for S-off, would a custom rom /kernel not take care of it?
Edit : if he can install custom recovery & is rooted it should already be taken care of.
If you truly have a locked down ME7 the only current option is developer Hashcode's safestrap method to flash roms.

Verizon Builds

[EDITED BASED OFF FEEDBACK]
Its hard to gather what order and what defines each build for the Verizon Galaxy S4 without a lot of reading. So here is my understanding! Please correct and or add onto this!!!
MDK - Original Build, can replace recovery, rootable
ME7 - 2nd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, SafeStrap support
MI1 - 3rd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap support (you can install any ME7, or MI1 roms)
MJ7 - 4th build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap is not supported
MK? -

MDK - Original Build, can replace recovery, rootable
ME7 - 2nd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, extensive SafeStrap support
MI1 - 3rd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, limited Safestrap support due to limited ROM selection* (HyperDrive only?)
MJ7 - 4th build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap is not supported
Is it true that you cannot run ME7 Roms on a MI1 device using Safestrap?

No, You can run any ROM on MI1 that suports Safestrap on ME7 & is based on TouchWiz. You would just flash the MI1 kernel modules after you finish installing the ROM.
The only difference between ME7 and MI1 really is that screen rotation is broken on MI1 if you run a custom rom. Also MK2 is the newest build now.

Thanks this helped me greatly. Going to Odin back to MDK after reading this.
What are you on right now? You can't downgrade firmware.

I just got a phone sent back from warranty and it's currently running on the MI1 firmware you can still used xposed framework and stuff if i were to root it right? Would you advise rooting now, or at what stage of firmware?
If you're in MI1 I wouldn't upgrade, it's the last build that you can still run safestrap on.

So i can follow the MI1 root instructions and install safestrap , but will this void my warranty? i heard something about how something like a code change triggers a signal on their servers or something,to void warranty but is that with Knox?
Rooting your phone is technically voiding warranty, although there are ways to get back to complete stock. No servers are triggered and the rooting instructions will have you getrid of knox.

Custom recoveries and custom rom are not possible on the AT&T i527 mega due to a locked bootloader only root is posible on this version of the mega. .unless the bootloader can be unlocked this will stay the same to not flash custon recoveries or roms.
