Pretty much a noob, and really don't know enough to be dangerous yet. I have a question about root and the stock factory reset, not TWRP.
What happens if you use the stock factory reset if you are rooted?
If you choose to wipe your internal memory using TWRP, what all does it delete? Everything? System folders?
In TWRP it wipes everything. I made the mistake of wiping internal memory before on my G2 and pooped bricks, because i couldn't get back into my rom and i could not flash anything because it was all gone. I had to reflash the stock ROM with LGflashtool. I would not touch internal memory if I were you. If you are stock recovery and rooted and factory reset you stay rooted but it takes you back to as you opening it up out the box but usually root sticks and you go thru setup as usual.

Hey, just wondering, how to do a fresh wipe, restore to the phone to original state, and clean all the data installed? Bluetooth transferred, downloaded file. Will the factory reset button able to do that?

Factory reset will return to clean CURRENT firmware .
Original state you need to have saved your original firmware if you have changed firmware or use Branded roms post Stock roms post to flash as near as possible to original .

If you have clockworkmod, you can format sd etc. and wipe all caches/data as far as i know. Don't know if stock-recovery mode does? Never used it ^^
Stock recovery only wipes the userdata partition, does not wipe the SD card or Internal storage.
Hi.
Have tried some new ROMs the last days, and i have noticed that the memory on the phone is getting kinda low. Only 500 MB after factory wipe in CWM and fresh android install. Is there a way to completely wipe the phone's storage before installing a ROM?
Thx
Download a stock Odinable Firmware and Flash it through Odin. Once the phone boots after the flash, go into CWM and wipe/data factory reset. This would completely wipe your phone.
Hit Thanks if I helped you.
I just flashed the XXBLFB ROM (T-Mobile stock ROM; coming from CM9.1). After three OTA updates (BLFB>BLH3>DLIH>ELLA) I found that not only the data partition was wiped (as expected), but also the sdcard partition with all photos and other data were deleted. Is this normal? I'm pretty sure I've flashed firmwares to different devices with Odin before (no repartition!) and the sdcard was never wiped. I'm so annoyed right now, because my CWM backup was saved on the internal sdcard.
Flash a custom rom and u will not lose ur data because s3 data add in the system
Sorry, I do not understand what you are saying.
Im sorry im not a english men lol ok. First flash a custom rom its simple and after that all your data will not be lose after

That is the observation I have made in the past. However, my question is why my data was deleted with the stock ROM.
Stock + ODIN = Always wipe of /data AND /sdcard?
The answer : galaxy s3 is like that . System + data not like a i9100 or i9000
well, did you do a factory reset from recovery? because if not, flashing a stock ROM doesn't wipe anything - it doesn't even touch the /data/
But a factory reset does in fact wipe /data/, including /data/media, which is /sdcard0

Yes, I believe I did the factory reset in the stock recovery, because the ROM didn't boot after flashing. This must have done the damage. Doing a factory reset from CWM recovery never touched my /sdcard, if I remember correctly.

That is the reason why you lost everything, stock 3e recovery factory reset wipes everything, in future always back up sd to computer before Odin flash, but I don't think you need telling that now

Yes, screw 3e! I was used to the CWM behavior, that's why didn't back up to the external sdcard (which was filled with an older CWM backup). Anyway, thanks for all your answers.
Updgraded to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 via Kies. Un-rooted, stock SGH-I777. Stuck in bootloop now at AT&T logo. I already did the wipe data cache in recovery mode with no luck so it leaves me to factory reset as my next option. I've spent several hours browsing through the forum already. Do any of the below allow me to keep data?
1) Use Odin and stock firmware - downloaded the UCMD8 tar file
2) Root, install kernel w/ CWM to use backup functionality. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894)
Just need a point in the direction I need to go, I'll handle the rest.
If the result is all the same (i.e. data loss), I'll use this issue as an opportunity to put a custom ROM on my phone.
Thanks!
Yes, most likely a wipe data/factory reset performed in recovery would correct the problem, but you will lose some system data. Which specific things are you worried about losing? You won't lose your photos, or any data from applications installed from the play store.
You are going to have to perform a wipe data/factory reset to use odin and the stock UCMD8 firmware. In fact, at this point it is probably the only way out.
U could try to re Odin the firmware first. Not sure where ya got it from, but it should be a no wipe. But if that doesn't solve ur problem, then ya have a few options--- Odin a custom kernel (like AJK), and then u could Mount usb storage through recovery and backup ur stuff to ur pc. Then try to see if it will boot up without looping. If it still loops then u need to go back into recovery and wipe data/factory reset. Reboot. And it should be good. Or if ya don't care about ur data, then just reboot to recovery and wipe data and reboot.

mostly just concerned with losing SMS but i have a backup from a few weeks ago so im not out much.
thanks for the answers! I guess i'll just have to make the plunge on one of the options.
I have a question that must be obvious to many but I don't know the answer and am curious.
Right now I am rooted and if I want to install a new rom I do the factory reset and wipe caches in recovery and then install the custom rom.
What happens if
1. I do this reset and clear caches within recovery and just reboot without installing a rom?
2. What happens if I do a factory reset with settings?
I know the phone will start in setup mode but will it have the last rom I installed or what?
If you're wiping system too, then the phone won't boot - except to recovery if you tell it to. If you're not wiping system but you're wiping data, then the phone will boot but be like you just installed it new for the first time and you have to set it up.
I'm not positive what Factory Reset within settings will do, if it works or not, when you have a custom recovery installed. Normally under a completely stock ROM with stock recovery, Factory Reset from Settings or from the stock recovery would wipe everything but system. It wipes Data, Cache, Dalvik, and internal storage. You can achieve the same thing from custom recovery if you wish to. And yes, as long as you didn't wipe System, the last ROM you had installed would boot.
Doing a factory reset from settings with twrp installed should be like doing a factory reset in twrp. TWRP will takeover when the phone restarts to do the factory reset. At least that is how it was with my Moto X phones. I've done it with Jasmine on my G3, but don't remember the outcome. It was only a few days ago too. Lol. I'm a retard.
