Has anyone had their Transformer Prime repaired after bricking device - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello,
I was looking to hear from anyone that has unlocked, rooted and eventually bricked their device at some point that had it RMA'd. My Prime has no bootloader (RCK, Wipe Data, nor will cold boot option on screen will show). I've tried everything. No nvflash blob, fastboot wont work and adb cant find my device. Unless I find some miraculous way to flash a recovery or blob via SD card I have to send it to Asus. Being its unlocked I'm not sure what they will do but wanted to know:
- how much would this cost roughly, (from anyone that has done this)
- and turnaround time.
Just want to know if its worth it. I sent my dock in last year and it took 4 months. I just bought a Asus x205ta for Xmas for $99 (black friday at Staples) and although I'm happy with it, I'd like to have my Prime as an option still. I paid almost $800 with dock when it was first released.
Thanks in advance

If you are good fumbling with screwdrivers it is no problem to change logic board (about one and a half dozend screws). In the States' ebay you can get you a logic board for 'round 30 bucks.
I did that once with the help of half a dozend howtos on youtube.

Thanks for getting back. I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-Eee-Pa...568287215?pt=Motherboards&hash=item3f3abb35ef for $80
I'm still looking thru videos to find one dedicated to replacing the logic board, (nothing yet). Once you replaced this, you plugged your tablet in and it came right on with original firmware??

Yes, seemed to have been refurbished.

[Q] prime returned with asus test rom?

i've had my prime for a couple of months now, although really i've only personally had it for a number of weeks, as it's been returned twice for repair... for some stupid reason they won't replace units here in Australia, only repair (even though mine was cactus out of the box and therefore clearly DOA!)
so i've been lucky enough to have working wifi, no crashes/reboots, etc... but had a dead pixel (first time sent back) and issues with the keyboard/dock not working (second time sent back)
just received it back after they fixed the keyboard/dock (and left some hefty scratches on the tablet and dock, not impressed at all!), and from what i can gather it seems they've left some sort of test rom on it?
OPEN_epad-eng 3.2.1 HTK7 OPEN_epad-8.8.0.119.1-20111222 test-keys
has a number of test tools installed, and rooted, but can't do update firmware, as it doesn't find any firmware, i'm assuming because it's OPEN_epad rather than WW_epad
are my only options now to either send it back yet again, or use the unlock tool to flash a rom on it?
as much as i want to be able to flash roms, at this stage i'm unwilling to compromise my warranty until it's 100% working and doesn't need to be sent back again!
(also happy to run any tests or copy any files if anyone is interested in anything from the test rom)

Maybe this thread is of help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492887
But it's also not without risks (as mentioned in that thread, updating with custom roms can screw up your device and I have no idea if such a testrom can be updated) so yeah... Seems like sending it back is the only other option (unlocking would be the other, but not an option for you in this case).

Hi,
Tell them they're dreaming! If the product is faulty etc, you can ask for a refund in Australia, and they must, by law, comply. Give them a taste of this (see below) and they'll get real nervous real fast.
(extracted from ACC web site).
When can you use your rights to repair, replace refund?
Since 1 January 2011, you have the right to ask for a repair, replacement or refund if goods and services you buy are not right.
Goods
You have these rights if goods you buy are:
faulty
unsafe
look unacceptable, and
do not do what they are supposed to do.
In each case this is according to what someone would normally expect for the type and cost of the particular goods.
You also have these rights if goods do not:
fit the purpose
match the description provided
match the sample or demonstration model provided
have the extra qualities or performance that the seller promised before the sale
Oh, I should have noted that a mandatory refund is for a major problem, which I assumed from the description, you had. In addition, if GPS was part of the spec when you bought the product, I imagine you have them on 2 counts:
What is a major problem?
An issue that would have stopped a reasonable person from buying the product or service if they’d known about it.
A product that:
is unsafe
is significantly different from the sample or description
doesn’t do what the business said it would, or what you asked for and can’t be easily fixed.
A service that:
is substantially unfit for its common purpose and can’t be easily fixed within a reasonable time
does not meet the specific purpose you asked for and cannot be easily rectified within a reasonable time
creates an unsafe situation.

Before you do anything, copy all the test tools and upload them here please. Simply browse to /data/app and /system/app and copy all the apps sd card (storage), then transfer to pc, zip and upload somewhere. Maybe that cpu monitor app is installed. Also, it might be worth speeking to someone like Diamondback to see if he would find system dump useful, might help with rooting or something else in the future.

You definately ought to do a system dump!
Here's a (very short) description on how to do that : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21833242&postcount=5
cheers for the bits of advice
Asus support here in .AU has been nothing short of utterly pathetic, very slow and difficult to deal with, no attention to detail (who the f*ck doesn't take care of other peoples property and scratches the hell out of it?!)... aware of my rights with ACCC, and if it comes to it i'll play that card, but don't have the time/energy at the moment for a **** fight with Asus... don't want a refund, just a proper non-scratched working unit, and i'll be on my merry way
pulling /system now, there's nothing in /data/app... anyone got some decent speed space somewhere to upload?
was wondering how they would have gotten this image on the device, i'm assuming they don't unlock it, and just have some way of flashing whatever the hell they like
but is there any easy way to check and see if the bootloader is still locked ?
it's going straight back in the morning, i've demanded a brand new replacement and want it in time for easter long w/end, so if there's anything else anyone wants off it lemme know before then!

Dropbox with the initial 2gb should be enough to store a system dump. (Just PM someone to mirror it otherwise the account will get locked if you post if publicly)
The service centres would have tools to flash it or a firmware image that is properly signed. (nvflash anyone?)
Bootloader locked? I think theres some fastboot command to verify if secure boot is on or off.
But yes, please do give us a dump of that.

Asus will have the AES encription key so will have unlock and relocked it more than likely.. well they might have not remembered to re-lock if they left the test software on it

Unlikely. Most probably repair centrea just have properly signed diagnostical build, which HQ supplies. Way easier than to unlock and relock every tfp they get.

I would try to get dumps of all mmcblk0 partitions. I can't remember the correct commands off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone could point you in the right direction.
I'm sure all the devs here would appreciate it if you were able to do this.
EDIT: IF YOU READ THIS, GO TO #asus-transformer on freenode irc.
PEOPLE WILL GUIDE YOU THROUGH GETTING AS MUCH OF THE INTERESTING GOODIES FROM THAT TABLET AS POSSIBLE.
Yeah it would be great if you can get everything off that tablet and mirrored to the devs and such, it would be such great benefit if we could get apktool to work with Asus's system files.
hmm this software might have some juicy stuff for the devs to play with
i've pulled /system
if anyone wants anything further from it, please let me know with exact instructions in the next half hour before i head in to work and drop it off on my way in... don't have time to jump on irc or anything of the sort sorry
FYI i did a fastboot devices, and nothing came up, so i assume it's still locked
Could you also grab a dump of the first 60MB of the emmc please?
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/emmc.dump bs=1024 count=61440
adb pull /sdcard/emmc.dump
Oh and can you pull /data/app if you haven't already?

You should be able to flash a newer firmware version using the rescue mode of the tablet. No bootloader or root required, and from what I can tell it's without any risk...

[Q] I believe I have made a brick.

Hi guys/girls of XDA.
I've been happily running my Galaxy S 2 with CM9 for some time.
I've just yesterday changed to the latest nightly. Had used the Battery Calibration market app, just so i can get the maximum use out of my extended battery (i still seemed to get regular usage out of the battery). Made sure the triangle was gone with Triangle Away. All was swell.
Untill today, I attempted to check out the beats audio plugin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525226
I flashed through CWM as you usually do for these things, once this was done, and rebooted fine, I noticed some niggling issues.
My SD card wasn't mounted. Mounted it again. Was working fine. My audiobook decided to crash on me, and the phone froze.
Thought it might be a good idea to get into Recovery and flash over the latest nightly again clearing the mess i put on my phone. SD wasn't mounted again, mounted and confirmed working.
Flashing of ROM would not work.
Sat at installing for about 10+ minutes.
Pulled battery.
Now i'm unable to get into Recovery or Download mode.
I believe I've Soft/Hardbricked. But I can't confirm it.
Any ideas?
(My sig isn't up to date, and i cbf updating it)
Try a usb jig

I don't have one, might have to check Ebay, unless there is a local seller in Aus.

Already tried.
Attempting to turn it on after this period has no effect, and nothing shows on the screen.
(After some time pressing the power button, it starts to get hot around the camera)
If you can't get into download mode at all/phone won't turn on your last (slim) chance is a jig. If the jig doesn't work you have two options:-
1) JTAG repair by 3rd party repairer (probably cheaper option)
2) Repair by Samsung (probably more expensive option)
But definitely try the jig before you go down that route. You never know.
I think usb jig will solve your problem and you can make your own usb jig indeed. It is just a 300k resistor which is soldered between the fourth and the fifth legs of a micro usb socket.
You can find lots of videos and schemes showing how to do it. I think it is better to
make your own usb jig then waiting your internet order.
I hope you can get your phone back soon.
Looks like i'll try a JIG asap.
Then look for a JTAG repairer in adelaide.
Will keep you guys posted.
There's a thread in General where people have offered to let other people use their jigs. Might be worth a look to see if there's someone in Radelaide who can help, would be surprised if there isn't.
Might save you waiting for jig in the post (assuming you don't already have one/aren't confident enough to make your own); if you do borrow a jig & it works you get your phone back earlier & if it doesn't work, at least you can then focus on getting it fixed.

Really ? Bugger Do a Google search along the lines of "Samsung Galaxy S2 jig eBay location Australia". That should yield you a seller within Australia which will save you a heap of postage time. I got mine from Hong Kong (relatively close) & it took 8 calendar days.

That's cool and all, I just purchased a couple online.
Google didn't help in my searching locally, due to desperation over the issue.
Waiting on some friends to get back to me, but i'll see how it goes.
try to make a picture from it
Well, after waiting on packages to arrive.
The phone will not respond to a USB Jig. (I ordered a couple, and none work, i'm on ICS bootloaders I believe, and it won't respond)
Have sent the phone off to http://www.themobilephoneclinic.com.au
(They do JTAG services in Melbourne)
I've found out something on the motherboard is fried, and they can't perform a JTAG on my phone.
Replacing the motherboard will cost about $275 to replace, so my dead phone is on it's way back to me, dead
Sad day.
Time to start saving for the S3 i think.

[Q] Screen problem with prime

Ive see a lot of threads about Prime's screen tearing and stuff but nothing like what is happiening with mine...
I've got this the first time a few months ago, and usually a reboot, or a long time without using it, or even a factory reset would make it go back... I wasnt getting it for a while, but now... no reboot is working...
want to know if anyone got anything like this, and if its really hardware and i will have to take it to ASUS...
Taking to ASUS is not really an option right now cuz I am not in the country I bought it right now and will take more two weeks to go back there...
Is there any way to flash a firmware through adb? would love if someone could walk me through it... thats the only hope I have right now.... unless someone have a better idea...
I am still hoping this is software... maybe a variant of what many people has been getting... since as far as I remember this started happen after ICS update
Thanks guys

Maybe, but only if it is a cable I couldn't check.... I just opened it, checked the cables and still same ****....
I had the same issue. I dropped my prime and then this happened. I had to RMA it.
have you tried reboot it using the pin hole by the micro sd card?
Guys i just want to report I had to RMA it. About 3 weeks after i gt it back perfectly working. They replaced the lcd pannel. But the most interesting is the device has an unlocked bootloader. Nevertheless it was taken care of under the warranty! Amazing that Asus is honoring unlocked devices' warranties for problems unrelated to it. Great job Asus!

Bricked my Tablet

Hello guys,
I have (had) a transformer prime with stock android 4.1.
I tried to flash my Prime with Goomanager and TWRP.
I found out that I had to install twrp manually to do this. (it was disabled by goomanager for the prime)
So I rooted my tablet with motor chopper, unlocked my bootloader with the asus apk and followed these instructions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-KLPDu2sos
They looked pretty straight forward, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I downloaded the file and relocated it to /twrp.blob and typed "reboot".
After rebooting I used goomanagers "Restore Recovery" button and after that it wouldn't boot.
It always freezes at the boot screen. (the one with the asus Logo in the center and Nvidia logo in the right bottom corner)
It also says "The device is unlocked." in the left upper corner.
I didn't know that I would need ADB (i didn't even know at that time, what that was) or fastboot on my laptop. Maybe this is my problem.
I tried the follwing things:
- press power and lower volume:
the tablets just turns off and on to this same splash screen
- I thought about trying option 1 from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088), but I had to install adb and fastboot, but when I type "adb devices" in the console, it says "list of devices attached", but there aren't any.
(my tablet is connected and is turned on [at least to this splash screen])
I hope you guys can help me and I didn't brick my tablet completely.
thanks
Simon
Same exact thing happened to me. Tried to reboot into recovery and now I can't get past the splash screen. No option for fastboot and adb does not show my device. I had to send mine in to Asus and that was three weeks ago. They have informed me that there will be a charge (have not said how much yet) but other than that no response from them. The issue we are having is a hard brick and unless you backed your prime up with nvflash? tool before upgrading to Jeallybean there is no way to recover it.
Hi @slatonyam,
thank you very much for your answer.
Could you please be so kind to tell me what it cost to repair it, after you got it back?
I just want to make sure it is worth the trouble and money.
Isn't there another way by using a micro sd with a build or similar?
best regards

Simon after three weeks of sitting on my tablet and numerous phone calls and emails from me, Asus finally got back to me with a quote. I believe the only reason they got back to me is because I told them to ship my tablet back to me and forget the repairs. This is the quote they gave me:
$213 for the motherboard
$65 for labor
I had already told them to ship my tablet back to me so I wasn't interested in getting it repaired and the cost is too much. I only paid $249 for the tablet through New Egg. So I think I just might buy a motherboard off ebay and try to repair it myself, I figure I have nothing to lose.

Update after 3 days or so waiting for them to ship my tablet. I received a email Tuesday stating that they were finally shipping my tablet back. But under the serial number I noticed that the device they are sending begins with CA whereas the one I sent in begins with a C1. Maybe they replaced my tablet after all. Will let everyone know when I receive it Tuesday.
Hi @slatonyam
I did sent my Transformer to Asus exactly 7 days ago and just got it back.
(had to send it to Asus Czeck, because I live in Austria - but it was pretty fast)
it is working again (got the same device) and it seems like they repaired it on warranty, because they didn't sent me a payment information or anything.
just got a working device back today.
I'm happy and I wish you good luck with your device.
best regards
Thanks for your kind words but I received the tablet back today and it was not repaired. But so happy that you received a repair for yours. I guess I will just lean on my Nook HD+ for now until a solution is released.

If you are hardbricked there is a solution by swapping out the MotherBoard

If you are like me and can not get fastboot or recovery, you can only get into APX mode. If you want to get your device back running there is a way. There are two items you will need.
#1 a case opening tool
#2 a TF201 motherboard
First you should search around to purchase
Asus Transformer Prime TF201 Tablet Motherboard 0K0AMBA000 69NAZAM19B05 <-- that is the motherboard
Then purchase a case opening tool and watch the videos on opening the prime, it is not that hard and takes less than 5min easy.
Then swap out your old board for the one you purchased and power it up.
I did this to mine I was backup in less than 30min.
Just watch lots of videos so you are familiar with the inner parts of the 201.
I hope this helps some of you, hit me up with any questions....
Like you I also hard bricked my prime. I have taken the leap and purchased a replacement board, just wondering if it was as simple as replacing the board and booting up and you are then back to where you left off, ROM/setting wise. Or was a re flash of some sort required??

Good question and I was worried about that as well. I bought my MB from a ebay seller that had a bunch and said tested. What I was told is the OS is already installed on the board, so I felt less worried that this will turn out to be a big job.
I cracked the case open.
Removed the ribbon cables that go to the display.
Removed the battery
Removed the MB
Re installed in reverse order and powered it up before closing case.
I will make a recommendation to anyone selling their units with bad screen/digitizer. Do whatever you have to to wipe the device or change all your passwords. The unit I got powered up with ICS and had the pas owners pic and files on it. It even had a the lock screen pattern enabled. I did one quick swipe and it opened I was surprised he made it so simple?
I looked around to see if there was any files I thought he might need and I was going to email him a copy, since I had all his login info for his gmail. There was nothing, just lots of porn so I wiped it.
So in a quick answer it's just a swap and power up.

Good question and I was worried about that as well. I bought my MB from a ebay seller that had a bunch and said tested. What I was told is the OS is already installed on the board, so I felt less worried that this will turn out to be a big job.
I cracked the case open.
Removed the ribbon cables that go to the display.

LOL, my wife was so freaked that the person sold his prime without wiping the data. I tried to explain to her that his digitizer/screen was bad so there was no easy way to do that.
I just could not believe I got the pattern code on the first try.

Your best bet is to search ebay / amazon.. Motherboards are pretty hard to find as there are not a lot around. It took me a couple of days of consistently searching ebay to find one.

If you can't get into APX you might have other issues. MB are out there, not saying you will find tons nor everyday.
