LTE Speed Fix via S5 Patch? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I recently purchased an S4 and notice that I have ridiculously slow download speeds (only about 1-2mbps) whereas my previous Motorola Droid Razr M provided 50+mbps typical. After some research it looks like this a common problem with the KitKat update. I have not found a solution to this problem. Now the interesting piece of this puzzle is that the S5 is not plagued with this issue. Has anyone researched the ability to take a software fix from the S5, modify it and provide a patch for the S4? Just thinking out loud here. Perhaps this could be a solution...

[MODEM][Zip] Modems for Loki'd & Safestrap roms (12/03/2014)
Could always try a modem change.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

So I tried to reinstall the NK1 modem - which did nothing. I also tried to install some of the Galaxy S5 modems which would not install (a long shot but thought I would try anyway). I do not know how to open and analyze the modem files but if I could, I bet there is a difference between the two that could be applied to the S4 modem file that would correct this issue...

The difference is probably them being written for completely different hardware? This is like saying one printer works better, so maybe we can take its drivers and use them for a different printer.
If the older modems don't do it then it probably is what it is... Motorola I think is just much better at getting a signal. My Moto X gets way better reception then my S4 did... As in S4 dropped calls at my house constantly where moto x works great and has nearly full bars.

[Q] Data Issue with Phonebreaker 2.1 Rom

Hi Guys,
I recently got the SG2 on AT&T (i777) and the first day I had it stock I was getting consistent H+ connection in my house and pretty much everywhere I was going. I ran the speedtest app a couple times, and I was averaging 2.5-4 mbps downloading which wasn't too bad.
That same night I rooted the phone and flashed Phonebreaker 2.1 rom following the correct steps (Not my first time rooting/flashing roms, I've done it to my Tmobile SG2 a few times). However the following day it seems my data connection has become inconsistent and speeds have slowed down to a drag. The indicator on the phone can never stay on H+ or even H..it consistently cycles from H+ to 3G to H (tried it in same locations as the first day with the phone). I ran the speedtest a few times and my download speeds ranged from 300Kbps to 1.6mbps if I was lucky.
I tried looking around in all the forums, I re-did the APN settings found in these forums, I troubleshooted with AT&T but to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? Would much appreciate it as I love this ROM minus this data issue I'm having.
FYI - Stock only shows H+ even if your not actually on it.
Its an illusion AT&T does to make the user think they have great connection everywhere.
Also try flashing a different modem, that might be the issue with your speeds, cause I changed to the leak's modem upon many request.
Thanks LiLChris06!
I tried the KH7 modem which did nothing, and I tried the KK6 which seemed to improve it a bit. I went into AT&T today and they said maybe it's just a defective phone and were willing to switch it out, which I might do.
However I love this ROM so much, is it available without the custom modem you added or with a different modem in the install rather then the UCLK2 I think you included?
Thanks

Hmmmm...what you mean by is it available without the custom modem? Maybe Im reading it wrong. As you know, because you said you have tried different modems, there are many different modems you can try. Shouldn't matter what modem the ROM comes with. Think there is a modem thread around here that has some good info. I think Task also just uploaded the the new LC5 Modem
I should have worded my reply a little better, and it might come across as a newbie question but basically I was wondering if that rom came with the stock modem the i777 comes with because when I had the phone the first day stock, the data speeds were pretty reasonable (3-4 mbps/downloading).
Wasn't sure if flashing different modems other then the one that came with the phone originally would help out my issue, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try. I did find the UCLC5 modem so I'll try that in a few minutes along with the other ones I haven't tried. If no luck, I'm going back to AT&T to exchange, probably defective phone like they said.
Thanks again for everyone's help
Sweet, found a solution!
I tried all 7 different modems under the same conditions, KJ1, KJ4 and KK6 were around the same ball park. KH7 and UCLC5 were a bit slower but close to each other, UCLC2 was by far the worst..and the winner was KJ2, big difference.
Thanks guys!

UCLD3 vs UCLE2 ?

I noticed E2 is way faster. BUT big but, E2 has way worse reception.
Am i the only one?
I was on Jersey Shore today and I couldn't get any data working.
If that is the case for you, then you could flash a different modem I suppose.

I seem to have better reception.

I've noticed way faster data speeds on E2. I used to see about 2 down, now I see about 6 down. And I've had no signal issues, always 4 or 5 bars. Afaik, different modems can give vastly different performance for different people. All depends on your area and what not. Just experiment with the various modems. I'm just glad Samsung finally got one right for my area, as I've only ever seen about 3 down on any phone I've owned until now.

The AT&T version of both of those modems, which is all us Canadians have access to thus far, has, for me, had much worse data speed numbers (non LTE anyway) on the Telus network than the stock GB Telus modem.
The E2 modem is, in my very non scientific testing, slightly slower for us here in Canada. (again, HSPA only, no LTE coverage here yet)
I'd really be interested in understanding what is actually different between carrier modem implementations. I noticed a similar speed differential in the stock modems.
I tried adjusting the RF preferences but that doesn't solve it. Its almost like AT&T doesn't have the same implementation of HSPA+ as the Canadian carriers.
I say all that with some degree of confidence in the numbers... having installed a variety of ROMs n modems and the results from the stock Telus modem are consistently better when I can use it.
Currently on the One Beta and associated LE2 modem, it shows very wonky "bars" by times...like none, in what should be solid five bar area.
My fourth floor office which never wavered from five bars on stock.. Consistently now shows any where from 0 to 3... But it still transmits and receives calls and data.
A buddy of mine is testing the Telus 4.0 release with Premium Suite... so in any event, it shouldn't be too much longer.

is it really that much faster? ive yet to upgrade from UCLD3 because its just running fine, wanted the next time i update my phone to be the last (offical ICS since i doubt we will get a update any time soon after that)
I noticed a big difference in speed. UCLD3 used to stutter a lot and freeze up from time to time for no apparent reason. Haven't had any of those issues with UCLE2. Also, bugs that annoyed me in UCLD3 were fixed in UCLE2. I don't see any reason not to flash UCLE2.
I've been having a bug on ucle2 where I cant keep a wifi connection for in app downloads resulting in the download stopping I've tested on multiple ucle2 roms and confirmed no issue on ucld3 not sure how I got so special because I haven't seen anyone else report this that I know of

That actually happened to me. I reverted to D. Seems not as crazy fast but stable. With E I got 1mB (that's bytes) per second. D tops at about 600.

NO, T-MO KID, VKL1 or Telus does not work on i717...

I don't know why everyone is claiming that these 3 radio packages enable 3G on the i717. I've tried all 3 and twice each from different sources. I CWM the ATT radio back on it and it's returned to 2G.
I would've bought the N7000 and not taken the risk on an international sim not liking all the hackdoolery going on in my phone. Now I have that concern PLUS I'm not getting the 3G that was the deciding factor in the N7000/i717 decision.
Any thoughts? Perhaps I am missing a setting or something? All I get with the 3 non ATT radios is a little x in the greyed out signal meter /|
If you followed the directions correctly you should be getting 4G on the 1700 band. It does work because I am currently using it. Maybe your area has bad signal?
hmmm
It probably does work. The signal is 2G 5 bars, this is elevated in Manhattan, there's always good signals from all carriers. The meter reads /x| though. I tried the only available settings after installing each of the radios, GSM or GSM/LTE and perhaps one other.
I lose the IMEI with the non ATT radios. No signal. Nothing. As soon as I flash ATT it goes to 5 bars of wonderfully slow 2G...
I've finally got settings, accounts and apps installed so I might try flashing a radio again but I'm exhausted of much else.
I really don't know what could be wrong. Perhaps its the wicked humidity and the lingering high toxicity thick gaseous farts making the air heavy and my mind less clear. It really screws up my zen.

What ROM are you using with the modems? I am on OnlyOne B4 with KID ICS modem from tspx23. I'm getting 3g speeds. It makes a difference what ROM you are on because of the UCLD or UCLE based ROM. There are a lot of different modems for ICS but make sure you got the right one for the right ROM. You should at the very least get above EDGE speeds.

You are using an UCLE3 ROM but to my knowledge, all the modems that are out are for UCLE2. I know it's troublesome, but I would suggest trying a new ROM based off of UCLE2 or even gingerbread to see if you can get a nice full speed 3g on Tmobile. That way at least you know the hardware and radio is good. I like AOKP, but for now I'm using OnlyOne B4 (B5 should be out tonight with some more Galaxy S3 goodies) See my signature.

I feel very stupid for paying $924 for that iPhone 4S 64GB factory unlocked that I had since December. It was cool getting it direct from Foxconn though.
This makes everything ok. Thank you.

There is no UCLE3 as far as I know
.....
It is UCLE3.
Whatever this variant it is, it doesn't have Japanese language support. The SIP support is also gone, I saw another poster mention that too. Its stripped of all the good stuff.
This is certainly not the CM I had on the Evo 4G.... The options on that CM were extensive to say the least. It gave one the best attempt at absolute control of every aspect of the device.
By comparison, the CM9 I have on this Note is only a slight deviation from the stock OS. I'm guessing that all the efforts at custom ROMs are getting rather diverse over the years, or perhaps this one is just not as good as the mainstream ones? I noticed how many models of Android there are as opposed to when it was just the Evo and a couple others, it's definitely had an effect...
Perhaps the best way to describe it is quality verses quantity. The collective "milk" intellect of all the dev's is no longer in the milk jug, it is now spread throughout several hundred coffee cups, very, very diluted.
Please sir, may I have some more? For the Galaxy Note i717???!!!

Amigo, please try it. You might get a good result.
Since they are galaxy s phones you can flash the modems but not all will work. I was trying other modems Thursday, and even though I got bars and I could enter the APN and activate data, the phone was sooo laggy.
Many users tried the new modem and had the same lag problems. But exeriment and report back. If you get a bad result you only have to flash your old modem, not restore your system.
thats the one I tried, it totally lagged my phone out
Why can't it work? Maddening, I know. The US t-mobile frequencies and the two bands used is the issue. They went rogue with that two band scheme and now there's always issues using any hardware on their network.
Would it be possible to swap out the hardware, specifically the modem chip, or is it soldered on there?
Sent from the Jelly Way Galaxy
The mainboard contains the processors, video, modem, and sound. Not possible to swap chips.
It seems like trading hardware with other xda'ers would be easier and more sure. xda has a sale or trade section.
so do even know if it will be possible to generate a working, better modem from the tmo more at all, or is it just a really difficult task?

the modem file is a binary file that seems like nobody is able to decompile or whatever.
Its always like this throughout the forums --people get a phone made for one network then struggle to make it work on the other.

So when you say "seems" and "struggle" I take that as being very difficult but not necessarily impossible¿

Nothing is impossible ...
But unless a serious interest is taken by developers who know and understand the coding, and how this code integrates into the chipset,
Then you probably won't see progress.
I'm guessing it would take development at the manufacturer level ....to pull it off.
And carrier/manufacturer relationships are often set in stone. It's amazing that our talented developers are able to glean so much for us, given the fact that often times, they have little or nothing to work with, yet they manage to give us some pretty awesome work ..g

Dual boot ROMs?

Has anyone successfully been able to dual boot ROMs on the AT&T Galaxy Note? I'm very familiar with rooting, flashing, etc but I have been unable to find a compatible method of dual boot for the AT&T Galaxy Note. Ive searched around XDA and googled it but I havet been able to figure it out. I have found 2 ROMS that I absolutely love but cannot decide between the two. Any help would be appreciated.

Thats such a bummer. I was hoping it was possible. Ive managed to get T-Mobiles 4G to work on my Note but speedtests show its only getting about 124kb download and about 70kb upload which seems even slower than Edge. People have said theyve managed to get around 7mb download. But I havent been able to break 200kb with any radio, build.prop tweak, or forcing HSPA+

Make sure your carrier turns on 4g LTE. I swapped phones from my 4g Samsung captivate to the 4g LTE note and my speed was super slow. I went into ATT and they said they had to turn on 4G LTE that it used different towers. Right after they did that my Note was much faster on the web

Is there any android devices out there that could have dual boot?
I imagine you would need twice as much system memory available. And a recovery system that could handle two different roms.
I believe there's a dual-boot system for the Note-2. However, one of the ROM's must be the factory ROM.
-blaine
Galaxy Tab 2 can dual boot. It uses a custom kernel. Here is a link to the kernel.

I was an Atrix 2 user, (I still am cause I broke my note on day 3 and havent fixed it yet)
On Atrix 2 and Razr you can use Boot Menu Manager from the play store. I've had 3 roms installed simultaneously, and it worked great. It boasts of more but in general I never really used more than 2 at a time. The great part was, that you could keep a solid runner on system1 and run your test roms on systems 3-6.
Hope this helps.
dual booting is possible.. just make a backup to your external SD of all the roms your heart desires. when wanting to boot into them, just wipe and restore
