Have tried many roms - going back to stock? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, just wanted to share.
I tried many roms (PA, CM, Omni, S5 Sensations etc) and I always find something missing/not working properly.
sometimes its the battery draining too fast, sometimes just random crashes and so on.
I'm thinking of going back to stock. I have the i9300 and the latest stock one is 4.3 (boooooo).
Has anyone done this route before? someone here also gone back from roms to stock?
Will be nice to hear others opinion.
Thanks :cyclops:

Even stock ROMs can be plagued by similar issues to be honest.
To minimise the irritations I always clean flash any ROM that I install and restore only apps, not data.
I'm currently rocking this stock based KK ROM port:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-qs-i9300-kk-t2755841
with version 6.2 of this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/kernel-boeffla-kernel-5-2-27-03-2014-t1964572
without any problems, it is certainly no less stable or functional than pretty much every factory Samsung ROM I have ever used.
If you do want to go back to 4.3 stock based ROM, I have always found Imperium http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37656328&postcount=2 to be pretty much perfect as a reliable, stable daily driver, using the stock kernel with a moderate profile (set in Aroma) I could easily get the thick end of 2 days off a charge under light use but with wifi always on and a bunch of apps like eBay, K9, Gmail, BBC weather syncing in the background.

i also wanted to go back to stock rom for camera and music app
but multitasking is awful in stock rom
also after using stock rom for couple of hours you started to feel lag
lag in dialer, camera and gallery is unbearable
so currently i am using neatrom aosp as primary rom and smartdroid kk v1 as secondary rom
with arters dual boot kernel

Hey, you nailed it - main lag is within camera, gallery & dialer.
in Touchwiz i imminently replace the stock dialer with eXdialer, and the stock gallery with QuickPic.

I also been trying almost all the 4.3./4.4/5.02 but 4.3 stock base is the most stable and trouble free rom for me .
I cant stand whenever you want to snap a important picture the camera crash and need to restart.or phone freeze .
My favourites are 1- SMART DROID Simple v9.9 2-JustArchi_I9300XXUGNG3 3-NCSSROM NK2
#1 & 3 are heavily debloated + CROSSBREEDER it flys

How do I remove all battery fully charged notifications

I am trying to disable the sound and the light mainly as it wakes me up.. I found this blog http://ykkfive.blogspot.com/2011/10/remove-battery-fully-charged.html but I don't understand how to do what he says.. does anyone have an APK or anything else I could do that would be easier.. I have a Rooted (no roms installed yet) S2.. Thanks!
If a new Rom flash is the only way I will go that route but would rather not.. Are there any roms that don't require me to loose all my settings but do disable this useless feature.
If you understand that post and have the required programs (sdk etc), go for it. To do it you will need root. If you are going that far its not much further to just flash a custom ROM.
I think all the custom ROMs suppress that annoying message. Check the change logs to be sure. Plus with all the custom ROMs you will get tethering enabled and a host of performance tweaks.
Edit:
I see you said you are already rooted. Taking the systemui.apk from a ROM that has already been tweaked may cause issues with your phone. There are many jar and apk files that are inter-related, and taking that one may bring broken links, or be reliant on links not there.
You choices are to mod it yourself manually, or flash a full ROM that already incorporates it.

Yeah sadly I don't understand it all that well and based on what you saying is if I am not 100% on it, flashing a custom rom will be easier and less BS.. Well time to research the best custom rom for SG2. Thanks for the info man!
Try them all, what's best for me may not be best for you. Sometimes you have to see the ROM running, because the screen shots don't do it justice.

i've tried some and i think the closest one to original stock is "unnamed rom". (it retains touchwiz, but remove useless at&t apps and bookmarks, and also some tweaks).

That could be said for all ROMs except CM7 and MIUI. Some of the others ditch the TW launcher, but they still have TouchWiz, and are based on stock, debloated and tweaked. It's a misnomer that TouchWiz is just the launcher and app drawer, that is only a small part of the deep integration TouchWiz has. The biggest difference between them is theming. UnNamed and Cognition are mostly stock, others like S8 and H8's are still TouchWiz, even if they don't look like stock.

I used Battery Charged Silencer (free in the market) and it worked great. Now I'm using the UnNamed ROM, so I don't need it any more.

[Q] Whats the most stable cooked LPQ rom?

I've been waiting for ICS for a while now and sinced it is released last march 13 I've heard so many bad feedbacks and bugs from stock LPQ and not even worth of flashing.
After several days many COOKED LPQ roms are out. Can anyone tell me whats the most Stable, bugfree or LESS bug LPQ COOKED ROM out there?
I don't know if it is THE most stable ROM, since i only tested two so far, but i really like the DarkyROM based on LPQ.
Very stable ROM, only issue i noticed so far is that Chrome is not working (have to deinstall the system app and then install over Market, works until reboot).

I think the general consensus will be to try them out yourself and see what you prefer and don't prefer. I'm wondering the same question myself as well, but I'm gonna experiment with a couple right now before deciding on a daily driver.

I would like to try every Custom ROM but problem is i have a hardtime downloading roms due to my slow internet connection..
By the way hope that you can provide some feedbacks regarding on what rom you are using rightnow.
Some says DarkyROM and Resurrection are among the widely used Custom ROM. Personally I use stock rom with 3rd party Launcher.
I will just wait for CM9 to become stable and move out from stock...

So the lockscreen issue and MMS are fixed on darkyROM?
hi
that was my question too. i read alot and when xxlpq were available i choose galaxy rom.
i installed galaxyrom lpq since 1 day and no fc's at all. it has also ota updates for lidroid pack and theme restore. deep sleep ok, battery ok but lets see after 3-4 cycles. no contacts editing fc, wifi and data ok, market ok- 3.4.7. restored and frozen some apps with titanium 4.8.4. sync ok for contacts, notes and calendar with phone explorer. its a rom close to stock and uses apex launcher. i now waiting for jkay work. only thing is that scrolling is not smooth as in gb roms.
Answer has to be non .
How can a firmware be issued and a perfect rom built in a few days with no testing .

[Q] Full set of ICS AOSP Google Apps?

Is there any way I can get my hands on a flashable ZIP (or even just a folder of APKs) of all the AOSP google apps—browser, clock, contacts, calendar, gallery, messaging, and phone? My perfect ROM would basically be stock Samsung ICS with TouchWiz apps replaced with their Google equivalents.
All the ROMs that have this (i.e. Resurrection) go a bit far with theming/mods for my taste, so I'd just like to cook my own. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
AOSP apps won't work on a Samsung base. Completely different framework.
A Samsung ICS base? I was under the impression that Holo apps would still work—like Gmail, Maps, Talk, etc.
Unlikely. If you want to try it, go to the CM9 discussion thread & download Gapps from link in the first post.

Thanks, will try.
Alternatively, what do you think would be the best ROM for AOSP apps? Just wait for CM9 to iron out all the kinks? (Personally just waiting on HDMI out to work.)
I've been using CM9 for a week (after testing it for a few days a month ago) & it's easily the best SGS2 rom either GB or ICS. The few things that don't work at the moment aren't a problem for me because I don't use them, but I've had zero problems/FCs/etc. Battery life is fantastic, definitely a daily driver for me.
Other AOSP ICS "roms" are winzip/theme jobs & not really roms, no significant original content in these. I haven't tried any of these.

I'll have to give CM a try, then. Are the remaining problems just a matter of needing some code from Samsung?
Don't know. Ask Codeworkx or Xplodwild. Things like FM radio are very unlikely to ever make their way into CM9.

All those aosp apps you asked are already there in resurrection and spike ics roms. Even more spike has a sperate aosp zip package to flash separately. You can try those.

It's there but I want to have (as OP has posted) just stock rom and just replace certain apps with aosp ones.
Is there a guide?

Differences between AOSP and Samsung-based ROM? / Tips for AOSP ROM?

Hi there,
I'm currently considering switching from a Samsung-based ROM to an AOSP-based ROM. Before doing so though, I'd like to check which Samsung / pre-installed apps will not work on an AOSP-based ROM (even if I transfer them using Titanium Backup), so I'd be grateful if someone could tell me. Also, which features would I lose doing so?
Then: If I decide to switch, can someone give me some tips as to which ROM to use? I'd prefer something lightweight, smooth, clean and stable based on Jelly Bean AOSP with some useful mods already installed. On my Desire I used Redux and Oxygen but I have no idea which SGS3 ROMs are like that.
TIA

Regarding your first question the apps which are installed by Sammy require tw framework to work.. So may not work on aosp... You can try though but you will get fcs.. Regarding third party apps such as drop box, flipboard they will work.. But you can anyways get them in play store..
You will loose Sammy specific features such as smart stay, swipe to call, and other motion gestures..
I can't comment on the second part as there are no best ROMs, you will have to try them yourselves or read and compare the OP

Thanks for the reply. As for ROM tips, I'm not asking for the best, I'm just asking for tips for lightweight, fast, stable and clean ROMs - preferably ones updated regularly - so I can have a look and choose myself.

(Help)port to touchwiz nature ux in gb

hello. I'm using gingerbread rooted. and i want to port to new touchwiz nature ux which preinstalled in jellybean.
pls don't suggest me to upgrade to jb . because jb lags alot. i already used it and I also have used many cocore kernels but still it is laggy.
everybody is on jb, I don't think anyone would be able to help you out!
There might be someone who can..but nobody's on gb now. Most of the users are now shifting to cm10.1 as it is ALMOST stable!!!

Whixh such 'stock' apps you can't use?
And I said its ALMOST stable, not fully!
there are only 2 bugs, that are offline charging not working and low in-call vol on incoming calls.
It's impossible because of different APIs.

I'm not sure what secnotemyfiles is. But if I read it as my files, you can use es file explorer and delete cm's and for music player, there is apollo, if not, you can install some other player and delete apollo if you don't want to use that!
He is talking about Samsung's stock apps. The apps must be ported to CM
It would be interesting if it could be ported to GB
Having such apps in a stable ROM
If it would be possible to port those apps to cm10.1 then that would be nice too!!!

I am running GB 2.3.6 too. JB for I9070 is so laggy and frustrating. I dont mind using GB which is very smooth and stable. The only downside is the almost useless stocj launcher. I cant even hide app icons in this launcher and folder creation is not to my liking. I searched for TW 5 launchers but came across a Android Kitkat launcher which was tested and confirmed working in I9070. I have been using it for a couple of days now. It is smooth and problem free. Positive so far. You can get it from here. Hope this helps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514743
