I am rooting my friends phone using the proper thread, following all the directions, did this on my previous Fascinate, however I get into download mode, but Odin does not recognize it and does nothing....?
make sure you have the samsung drivers installed...
Everything is installed including the drivers, its saying the device is not being recognized even though the drivers are on my computer..
are u using the stock usb cable? Maybe try a different one. Also might want to try a different computer. Another thing go into device manager and make sure the drivers are indeed installed for your device.

Yes I am using the stock cable, and I have tried it on 3 different computers each one isn't working and a pop up comes up stating the usb device cannot be recognized or something close to that. Under disk drives on device manager it does show SAMSUNG HM500JJ but I dunno...this is weird maybe I just can't get this thing rooted..

I would try redownloading and installing the samsung drivers...try the drivers from section 1 of my guide in general section. If that still dont work then try another usb cable. The cables can be touchy with odin, especially if you coil it up all the time. Don;t ask me why, all I know is in the past 6mo this issue has been posted 50times or better. Usually its one of the things I mentioned causing the problem.

Yea that is the driver I have been using and I have uninstalled it and installed it probably a good 5 times. I just dont understand why it would be the cable if I plug it in and its giving the message "The USB Device cannot be detected" or something along the lines of that. I will try the cable for my HTC Thunderbolt tomorrow and see if it works. If that doesn't work then it looks like the phone won't be getting rooted because I don't have anymore cables to try and I am running out of patience
It has to be the driver...my htc thunderbolt works perfect and is always recognized and adb works too and recognizes my device

I couldn't get it installed...the directions on actually getting the driver installed are not good...there are a lot of steps that I can't do on my computer such as go to manage in computer and then devices tab...there is no devices tab?!?!

it wont automatically install...you have to click on the device in device manager and go to update driver, then manually push the google driver. After successful install it should say android device in DM.
I couldn't find the device in device manager...I mean the computer isn't going to recognize it anyways if there isn't any drivers installed?

If you have usb debugging turned on, usb cable plugged in, installed either the samsung driver or nexus driver and still get a "cant recognize device error" then either the usb port is bad on the phone or the cable is jacked. The problem is not the drivers...Lots of people use the drivers I suggested with no problems. I thinks its the usb cable personally because from what you describe, windows can tell something is plugged into the usb port, but cant tell what it is. Windows has to be able to recognize the device before you can install the drivers for it.

That could be...try cleaning the usb port on the phone...power of device, pull battery, then put some contact cleaner on a q-tip. If still nothing, then a replacement might be in order.

You cannot root without a computer.
Your problem is probably a driver issue. Please read the quides carefully as they contain everthing you need to do it.

So you can't get anything to work from your computer including USB storage and fastboot commands? Sounds like a hardware problem with the USB port on the phone or the cable to me.
Does it charge properly? You could still have data issues even if it charges. Some cables only support charging and are not wired for data.

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to connect my phone to the computer so I can root it but when I plug the USB in windows doesn't recognise my device and fails to install the drivers. I tried installing the newest HTC Sync and that didn't do anything to help. I tried uninstalling the drivers and reconnecting my phone but that didn't work either. I just got the same message.
Any help is much appreciated

Thanks, i'll give it a go now!
Unfortunately that didn't work
Here's a couple suggestions. Check to see if your cord is the culprit and switch them out. I forgot your phone is having issues with PC detection. Try and connect it to another computer to rule out your PC. Another option would be to find a "signed" ruu and flash it through your bootloader. I emphasize signed because only a signed ruu can flash on a s-on device with the bootloader relocked. Then again if your bootloader is unlocked there's no point in trying the ruu option. Lol

Thanks guys, I'll try the signed ruu and try a different PC but unfortunately I only have one cable I can't really try that one till I get borrow a phone cable
Right well it's not the computer, it won't connect to my laptop either, I've tried restarting both the phone and the computer/ laptop and the signed ruu didn't help either
I believe its safe to say that perhaps your phones hardware got damaged somehow. It really sucks because had it been something else, you couldve used the wire trick to gain s-off and put your phones bootloader back on "locked" state. Ran the ruu and could've took it in for repair. My best guess is to take it to a non sprint repair shop and hopefully they will fix it for you. Good luck.
I'm already s-off. I didn't know this previously so I'll give that a go, thanks

Now, I don't know how the underlying hardware works but I'm fairly sure that if ADB and other USB functions work, fastboot should work as well. Any ideas?

ahhh...the famous code 43. The problem with this code is its pretty generic. It could be hardware or could be drivers. Basically what happens is Winblows is having an issue with the device that is connect, in this case your phone. Seen this one to many times. Try rebooting your computer first of all and try again. If you are still getting the try updating the HTC drivers for your phone. If you do this make sure to remove old drivers and then reinstall the new drivers. That should take care of the issue

It does seem to be my computer and not the phone thankfully (works on another PC). I am using Koush's universal drivers and they've previously worked. On the USB 2.0 ports I get the device enumeration failed thing, and in the USB 3.0 ports (different board, uses a Renesas controller) it appears but gives me
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I guess worst case I'll just patch it through to an XP virtual machine or something.

Same here Debian and DSL all the way but yeah a xp VM should do the trick then. Haven't played with 8 or 8.1 at all so I can even point you in a direction for that. Easy solution as well....use Linux

i know this is an old post, but the driver posted here got me back in business!!! Its a phone for the kiddos, and it was missing rh boot.img and all but 1 of my computers runs 10. This got the win 7 adb driver working just fine!!!
hey there. So I have an AT&T X+ and I'm currently on Elegancia 5.2 I believe. I was wondering if I should just go back to stock and wait for the OTA 4.2.2 update, or flash the newest Elegancia ROM? But, I kinda have a handicap:
My phone doesn't connect to my PC or any PC at all. So if I'm going to flash a Rom I gotta put it on drop box and transfer it etc. I will NOT be able to flash a boot.img because of this either. I've tried the app Flashify, and it says it isn't compatible with my device. So if any of these roms have a custom boot.img I probably won't be able to use it.
Another thing. I feel like I know what the problem is with my device. It says that USB storage is unavailable at all times. Even when it is plugged in. If anyone knows a fix for this please don't be afraid to speak up.
Thanks guys!

To start with the Latest drivers and the ADB setup should be proper and even after that if that doesn't show then....
Open device Manager in Windows an see whether atleast it has been shown as Unknown device or something there.....
