Dell rarely tells the truth, the tablet most likely will get android 5 in a few months, if you expect 5 now you might as well return the tablet.

I have this tablet and I like it a lot. Like you, I was debating getting the Nexus 9, but I'm a sucker when it comes to build quality so this wins in my mind. The screen is also absolutely gorgeous. I managed to root mine but I'm waiting for any custom roms to pop up. For now, I'm okay with KitKat.

I was always under the impression that it would ship with 4.4. Everything I read said a 5.0 update would eventually be made available.

I just picked it up yesterday. It's very slick and I don't have any problem whatsoever with the bezel at the bottom. The aluminum body feels good in your hands and the screen is amazing. I also considered the nexus 9 but preferred the smaller dimesions and better build.
re
The screen and form factor and speed are the reasons to buy it.
The cameras are a gimmicky joke. Really lousy quality.. But then again why would you take too many pics with a tablet anyway.
I have noticed a little lag here and there and screen rotation will often hang..
I was going to get the nexus 9 but this screen on the dell is freaking awesome with crazy good viewing angles. Its so good I have to really dim it to keep others from seeing what I'm doing.
I have a case being shipped from China, they thought I accidently ordered the wrong model because it was not officially released when I got mine.
The nexus looked kinda toy like compared to the dell.. Plus the nexus was larger then I wanted, lots of bezel.
buy the end of the month i would decide to get either one of them
but my main concern with the dell is
official support + dev support
i mean i have galaxy s3 as my phone
and it has bad official support
the only reason for me to keep it is the great dev here at xda
i mean i have android lollipop on my galaxy s3
while other newer devices don't
re
The dell forums basically scream, dell does not update their devices. Once they put out a new device ur pretty much on your own.

For the most part this is true, Dell support and updates are no where near those of Google nexus.

I asked dell on their forums about why loly was not pre-loaded like they said it would be.. with 0 responses. I asked when it was going to be released.. 0 responses.
looks like im returning the tablet.. I would not suggest getting any tablet from dell.
LMAO, I just saw the price of this tablet, I expected it to be around $200 to $250 range.
No way this tablet is worth $400, Dell has balls, I give them that for asking so much for this tablet, by March the tablet will be under the $250 mark and still be Kitkat.

Would you be kind to make the benchmark with Droidfish as explained on my previous post? thanks
maxecume said:
There is an interesting benchmark made with Droidfish on a german forum (chinamobiles.org); "Mclane" actually started it some years ago. The post was viewed more than 4200 times and "approved" by the administrator; many members participated on the forum and on private messages; they appreciate that benchmark. Would you be OK to test your Dell Venue 8 7840 ? For details, see that link:
http://www.chinamobiles.org/threads...-aktualisieren-benchmark-siehe-seite-1.41880/
and the "howto"
1) After rebooting, download and install Droidfish:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.petero.droidfish
2) Clear all apps in background (hold home and swipe them away) and then run droidfish.
3) Press the menu button, invoke "Settings", choose "Threads" and select "Automatic", and then press back button to get back to chess board.
4) There is button with label "M" below chess board. Press it and choose "Analysis Mode". Analysis will start. Keep it running for about 1 minute.
5) After 1 minute passed, read and record the "knps:" number at bottom of the screen. This is the measurement we're interested in. This value is a number of positions searched per second (in thousands). The higher the better.
6) IMPORTANT: To force program to STOP thinking, press "M" button again, choose "Two players" so that analysis will stop. Post the results here with rom information (optional). Stock rom is preferable but other roms are welcomed.
Thank you! best regards.

you must be a higher "computering man" than me...
Droidfish is a chess apps. Chess programs are often used to test computers...
Talking simply, this test measures the speed of the processor at its "peak" level;
results depend on speed (gHz), number of cores, cache size, used RAM size...
it depends also on the temperature of the processor which can "throttle" for some of them...
So it's important to test with "cold" (not used for a moment) and rebooted device
and NOT to FORGET to STOP the TEST after few minutes as explained on "point 6".
So after all that, what is your peak "result", "vampirefo" ?
is it Atom Z3560 or Z3580?
thank you for you help

Just so torn between the newer devices and I have little hope that the holy trifecta of build/updates/camera on a phone these days isn't coming any time soon without throwing a phablet screen on it.
And now.... the Note 2 seems like the perfect device to go to from the SGS3.... I think 5"5 is just about the highest I can go -- though sorta not happy that is only has 267ppi (I am near-sighted even with glasses). The note 3 sounds to be too big, the new Nexus probably won't hit verizon, the HTC One's camera is the worst, and the SGS4 is not my phone....
Oh and Verizon has these coupons that brings a brand new Note 2 down to $204 so yeah
How do you guys like the phone? Are you upgrading or feeling an itch to?

Well, I have a few thoughts on it.
First off, you can't go wrong with this phone. I know we're all kind of still stuck in that mindset that we need the newest device available, but it just doesn't matter as much as it did two years ago. We reached that plateau where the computational hardware is more than powerful enough to run a perfectly smooth experience throughout the OS. Even with the new CPU architecture (A15 vs the A9 in this phone) in phones like the SGS4, the One, the GN3, etc. there's not much of a point in the extra power. When we went from A7 to A9 then single to dual core, it was a big deal. We needed the absolute best hardware to obtain the best experience we could. We've simply past that point.
With that said, 720p vs 1080p, to me at least, also means less than 720p vs WVGA. Even at 5.5" inches, it's really freakin' hard to see the difference. Also, if you have vision issues, you realize that things will be smaller in 1080p vs 720p? Things are sharper because they can fit more stuff in the same screen, and produce the same images at a smaller rate. DON'T "upgrade" to 1080p if that's an issue for you.
The biggest selling point for us, of course, is that the GN2 is the only one with an unlocked bootloader right now. There's hope that the SGS4 will have safestrap (maybe even kexec support too) soon, and while safestrap's great, it's not an unlocked bootloader. It's a big deal, it's getting harder to unlock them with every new generation of phones. Before you go with this though, really take the time to hold it in your hand there. If you're used to using your phone with one hand, it will be a lot harder. People actually laugh at how big my hands are, but I can only barely reach every part of this screen with my thumb.
The One has a beautiful design, screen, etc. but I personally can't give up a removable battery and external sd support. I have barely plugged this phone in because I swap batteries and use an external charger. Furthermore, I never worry about storage because of the sd. I can't give those up.
The Note 3 will probably be the same size as this device with a smaller bezel. It will probably be even thinner too, if the SGS3 to 4 is any precedent. It will be my first choice as an upgrade, but I'm in no rush. I'll wait until I can get a custom ROM/kernel on it so there's established & active development for it. I would hate to be stuck in the situation SGS4 users are in now. Even MDK users, the ones who were able to get their phone before the firmware update, barely have development options because there's such a small user base.
The new Nexus I can't really comment on, there's no substantial information available for it, which at least means it won't be available any time soon. The Nexus 4 and GNex were horribly-kept secrets, so the new one won't be any different.

Yes. My friend at work let me use her brand new nexus 7 FHD yesterday and it was bad. Things sometimes required multiple touches to respond.
Its just like the I/O issues in the transformer series was claimed to be software when it was clearly hardware.

Agreed. Asus may make great motherboards and notebooks but they have the worst tablets. I got burned twice; I bought the tf700 last year and the screen was great but the user experience was horrible because of the slow I/O, it was lagging doing the basic things like opening the app drawer, flashing the cromix rom helped but you can't get around such cheap bad hardware with tweaks. Then I went ahead and got N7 2013 because I thought Asus learned from their mistakes and the partnership with Google would mean better quality control, but my N7 has the multi touch issues. I don't understand how Asus can screw up a touch screen on a tablet.
So I'm disappointed Google decided to choose Asus and I'll wait until it's certain Asus got the Nexus 10 right and didn't like, accidentally manufacture some units without speakers or other units with varying sizes or got the touch screen malfunctioning again... you never know with Asus.

If this is actually true (and not some kind of error in your inventory system), I'll need to make sure I stock up on popcorn. The Internet will absolutely blow up with stories of "OMG! This is the first time in 3 years that Samsung hasn't had a current-generation Nexus device!!!! Google and Samsung are becoming estranged and their relationship is on the outs!!!!! OMG, Samsung's going to go 100% Tizen and ditch Android forever!!!!!"
Of course, this is absolutely ridiculous, but it'll serve as good fodder for the Internet Android blogs for a day or two. After all, we all know Android blogs generally won't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Our inventory will never show a product that is not real by the way. So this is 100% true
I'm definitely going to pick this one up, now that i know Google are going to stock it officially in stores as well unlike last years one. So this will mean they will be advertising it and putting some real marketing power behind it. I'm hoping Android KitKat brings some features which improves the core apps. As one of the reason why Samsung Note 10.1 has been very popular is because they added on to stock android and made it a fully featured tablet OS.
Will never get a Samsung (non nexus) tablet as Touchwiz is so sluggish. So seriously looking forward to Nexus 10 2013/14 edition as this'll be my first proper 10 inch tablet

So all kinds of checks and balances exist to keep from accidental entry of a product and not list the wrong vendor or product number?
I've seen it at a number of different stores and locations, even when they have product in stock and ready to sell.

Because it works 100% on yours, everyone else that has the problem must be a liar!!
In all seriousness though, I'm glad it's working for you.
My spouses N7 2013 is having the same problems. I've done a factory wipe, etc, and the touch screen is still poor results. Back to the store for exchange, as the problem looks to be both software and hardware. Hardware isn't an issue for all (just like the screen lift wasn't for all with the N7 first edition) and so it's fixed for most with the software patch.
Glad my N10 has been so solid. But yea, I'm not upgrading at this time.
Still works as it did when I purchased it.
This guarantees that I will not purchase the next Nexus 10. No Asus tablet for me. The Transformer Prime soured me for life...

You'll see two models to replace the 16GB Nexus 10.
1. 64GB Samsung N10.
2. 64GB model with unlocked LTE.
Just like the 32GB and 3G/HSPA+ models of the Nexus 7 had when the 8GB model was discontinued.
My speculation is just that.
But I believe it to be more probable based on Sundar Pichai's tweet earlier this year.
so, rumors about N10 2013 come alive again:

Yeah we were certain beyond all doubt, but now that date has come and egg is on our faces we've come back with an even more certain date!
The Future!!! (Should have said that instead of November )
I'll tell you what, I believe ASUS is making a 10" tab and the specs are spot on, but I doubt it's for the Google Play Store.
I suspect if another set of N10's are released, it'll be a small revision bump to the existing hardware with 64GB storage with and without LTE.
I love my N10, but sales of this tab were no where near the number of the N7 first edition.
So are you? I keep looking online for information to the new Nexus 10, but no one seems to care. All I can find is information related to the new Nexus 5, and although it's a great looking device, I'm gonna wait a bit to see if I want to change carrier just to get it. What really has me excited is the concept of a far more powerful Nexus 10 device.
Yet, no one seems especially interested. So am I gonna have any competition at all buying this device? If no one cares I guess it'll make it that much easier to waltz in and buy it. I even sold my old one before the new one was announced so that I could get a good price for it.
I am with you. Looking forward to it. If it ever sees the light of day.

As someone who owned a Nexus 10, perfect does not describe it accurately. It may be perfect for you but I would like to see the new one improve on some things. Holding out for more news, but there doesn't seem to be any :/

Agree. A good device but not perfect.
Im also looking forward to the 2nd gen Nexus 10. However, I really hope that its not Asus that makes the next N10. They seem to f**k up every device they release.

Yup I am looking forward to it. The current Nexus 10 is good but you can tell that it has not really been optimised and it does lag. Because the new tablet will be using the 800 snapdragon (well hopefully) then it will sure be a hell lot smoother and stable.

That's what I felt about mine the whole time I had it. It was smooth... sometimes. Even with the subsequent updates it never really felt like it was "there" yet. I knew going in that it was a first gen device and that there may be problems. Perhaps they just couldn't find a CPU/GPU at the time that would handle the level of power needed. Overall I choose Android over iOS for the functionality, and wouldn't balk at a few stutters. However, there were many things that just seemed to really bother me.
Browsing the web was a complete chop fest on many of my favorite websites, most likely because the Nexus has to re-scale just about everything, every time, because of its very high resolution. Also, playing games was fun, but only til the tablet got really hot and throttled itself and the game started to slow down. Even the relatively simple game "Dungelot" had this problem. Stuttering abounded after that happened. It was other games too but that one I remember vividly.
In other words... I loved it, but I would also really love an updated version of it. One that doesn't have the problems present with the first.
Well it definitely looks like it'll be manufactured by Asus and not Samsung.
That doesn't really bother me - I came to the Nexus 10 from the Nexus 7 (first gen). Nexus 7 was awesome until 4.2 was released and it never recovered from that. It annoyed me that to get a decent experience from it I needed to use an outdated version of Android...
I sold my Nexus 7 and bought a 2nd hand N10. I do love my N10 but yeah obviously I would love an updated faster version, but for me money is an issue and I already got a great bargain for the 2nd hand N10 (for £185) (this was in July), so i wouldn't be able to afford a new N10. Same with the Nexus 5. Would freaking love one but no way I can afford it, I've got a 2nd hand HTC One X (for £145).
Yeah I agree Google need to sort out performance on android. Nexus 7 first gen was brilliant but after the 4.2 update it has been bad, and even with 4.3 with trim it is still laggy.
Nexus 10 on the other hand has got better with updates, it is just the kernel and driver which is letting it down in my opinion.

Right? Where's the new Nexus 10 spec leak? Come on, they've already pretty much shown us the whole Nexus 5. Specs, images, hell they even put it up on Google Play for a short time. I have looked through the roster of available tablets, and a new Nexus 10 is what I wanna go with, despite the absence of info. The new Note looks alright, but it also looks bloated and confusing.
Why can't the other tablet manufacturers understand that maybe the user actually wants to use some of that power for important things, not 100 background processes that slow the entire thing down. Oh sure you could root it and put a different ROM on, but why would I pay $550 for a tablet with all these special features I don't want and am going to just throw away? It's like pissing $150 down the drain.
Google needs to get on the ball with these new releases.

I want a release already but then again if they release it on the same day as the nexus 5 (Oct. 24th) then I'll be spending around $1000 by Oct. 31st... So let's hope for a quick release but not so quick..

I'm with you. I've never been a fan of Samsung TouchWiz - it's just a bunch of unnecessary fluff as far as I'm concerned.
I purchased my current cell phone (Galaxy Nexus) from Amazon for just that reason.
Hopefully by the time the new Nexus 10 is out the Asus TF701T will be available as well - would be nice to have another choice at time of purchase!
Nope won't be upgrading as mine is perfect too

Needs to look more square like the Nexus 7 2013 and come in around £300.
Otherwise ipad air for me.
Hope they announce it soon.
Google is out of stock on the 16 Gb version. Since I doubt these things are selling like hotcakes now, I hope this means that they have stopped resupply in anticipation of the new one launching.
Pure conjecture.
Would be nice if...
Would be nice if we had some info on it. I've got the original wifi xoom mz604 and I'll say its held up nicely and it does everything I ask it to do, but I've upgraded my phone twice since getting it and I'm ready for the nexus 10 2 (nexus 10 2013?) to drop...or just some info to drop so I can make a decision whether to wait or not.
What I don't understand about product releases is that I would think manufacturers would want to release information as early as possible so that buyers can decide whether to wait and buy their device or to go ahead and buy an available device. I'd think that if someone wants a new tablet and wants to get the newest one available (that suits them), they would research whats available or coming up and make a decision. If i'm gonna buy a tablet today, but I know the nexus 10 2 is coming out in 2 weeks. I'm more likely to wait the 2 weeks and get the newest tablet out there. If theres no info on release date and I need a tablet now, I'll just go buy whats available now instead of waiting indefinitely.
Get the release date and price out there so I can decide to wait or not. Otherwise I'll buy something else today and you'll lose my business. I'm sure there are reasons to not release the info, but as a buyer...I want to know how long I have to wait.
At any rate, I want to switch to Nexus devices...but I'm on Verizon and won't be getting a nexus phone anytime soon I bet. So at least tell me when I can get the tablet...I mean, its my birthday today and I could tell my family just to give me some cash to save up for it instead of asking for something else just to be asking for something...i.e. mom is getting me a briefcase...exciting!
Lay out the release roadmap so I know what to do...please.

The original source of the story, phonearena.com has cast doubt on it since the picture was photo shopped and they checked their records on the tipster: (I cannot post links yet, but it was easy to find with Google)
From their article:
UPDATE: After a more extensive research, we believe that these are likely fake. This is not simply because the icons on the Nexus 10 2013 were obviously added later -- this could have been done for illustrative purposes anyway. It's because, after delving deep into our tips database, we concluded that this particular tipster has a track record of sending content of dubious authenticity

I am not saying either is fake, and I am hopeful it is announced/released soon, but phonearena added a caveat to their story, and it is the source all the other's are quoting or copying from. So I remain hopeful but suspect.

I thought that, until I used it for a week. Now the bloatware is coolware in how S pen integrates with the environment so well.
After using a system that has S Pen, I'm not sure I could work without one.
I used a capacitive stylus with my Nexus 10, and seriously there is NO COMPARISON to S Pen. S Pen has the ability to register the pressure and more, so the ability to the graphic artist is a leap over SIMPLE TOUCH.
Yeah, it's that cool, if you'll use the stylus. Even casual note taking is great.
I think this is the reason Microsoft added it to the Surface 2.
Touch alone is sooo 2009/2010.

Oh.. I think you'll see TWO new Nexus 10 models.
Nexus 10 from Samsung with existing specifications and 64GB.
Nexus 10 from Samsung with 64GB and unlocked sim LTE.
The 16GB will be retired (just like the Nexus 7 8GB edition was). 32GB will be the new low end.
Just like the Nexus 7 line that had the 32GB and 3G/HSPA+ models silently release, the Nexus 10 updates will also be a silent release (no launch party).
But with the changes, you'll see the pricing drop so that the 64GB is close to the same pricing the 32GB is currently.
Launch party will be Nexus 5 and Kitkat 4.4
I have to give my friends Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition back this week. Based on the experience, the S Pen truly compels, but I'm going to stick with my N10 for a while longer. July 2014 is when you'll likely see the N10 2014 edition.
I thought Asus was making the new Nexus 10.

Are they? Posted on their website yet?
You are reading media hype until it actually ships.
Lets see the proof:
1. Point of sale system shows "ASUS" made N10. Has anyone entering data for stores/warehouses never made a mistake, not once?
2. Leaked Press "render". If I was part of the press, I could photo-chop all sorts of tablets and say it's a render based on educated guesses. Stretch an ASUS N7 and folks looking at it would say, "hey that looks like ASUS!"
Questions:
A. Where are the parts order news items you normally see with the ramp up of a product? Usually there'll be leaks of the back shell, etc.
B. Samsung wouldn't have this as they are not just a parts assembly company, it's all in house for the most part. ASUS would have LDC panel orders, etc. Yet it's oddly quiet.
C. What was Sundar Pichai saying? Sure the head of Chrome and Android teams could be wrong, or his quote was taken out of context by Amir Efrati.

Do you guys think this device will be supported by anyone on XDA?
There isn't a trace of anything currently, which appears to be the case for anything by Lenovo unfortunately, which is a shame as this appears to be a very capable device.
I'd love to replace my N7 (2013) with one but the lack of support and being forced to use Lenovo's (most likely crap) software is a deal-breaker.
It currently costs just over £100 in the UK because of a deal with Curry's and a cashback scheme from Lenovo themselves.
Nice little tablet
I bought one a couple of weeks ago to replace my Nexus 7 (2012) that had a cracked screen. I've been really happy with it so far. Lenovo's software isn't that bad, and you can fix most of the issues (no app drawer?) by installing something like Nova or Apex launcher. I would like root access so that I can use Titanium Backup and get rid of some bloatware, but I have not been disappointed in the tablets performance at all.
Let's hope someone smarter than me finds an exploit for this tablet soon.

Spec wise it's better than the nexus 7. The Intel atom 3745 is bang in the middle performance wise compared to the snapdragon 600 and 800. Got mine for 107 from p.c world, what a bargain!!!
Hope the popularity picks up and we see it get root access. Custom roms would be a huge bonus, but I won't be holding my breath!
Forum needed
I too would love to see a sub-forum for this device. I've bought one and am seriously impressed with it for the price. Only one gripe is that the screen flashes once every so often. I hope it's software related rather than hardware.
Interesting, mine does the screen flashing too. It seems some apps cause it more than others.
I would love to see a forum for this device to start getting users together.
i would like to get root on this aswell, its an awesome tablet for the price but root would make it so much better

Is that a little like walking backwards? Get the device first, then hope for root and/or developer support.
Generally, the advice is check for root and/or developer support first, then buy the device. Apart from ensuring you don't end up with a dead end device, it also ensures that your business goes to reward manufacurers that produce open and flexible devices that really do adapt to their customer's needs and usage rather than forcing customers into a strait jacket.
I would also like to gain root access for this device. If anyone knows of a way to root I'd be extremely thankful!

I understand the point you are trying to make, but it doesn't apply to my decision to buy this tablet. It would be nice to have a root solution for the reasons I mentioned, but I knew one was unavailable when I purchased it. If we get root, great, I'll use Titanium Backup and get rid of some apps I don't plan on using. If we don't get root, it's still a great tablet with a fantastic screen, decent speakers, and solid performance for under $200. Since I'm unlikely to keep any device as my primary device for more than around 18 months (I get bored and want something shinier!), I'm not super concerned about whether or not it's considered a "dead end device" either.

It's cool that you were informed before you bought it. LG G Pad 8.3 offers similar benefits but is more open.
On these devices that can monitor ever more of what one does and report back to who-knows-where without one's knowledge or permission, one is motivated to demand more and more control that isn't possible if the devices are locked down. I hope Lenovo's lack of openness doesn't rub off on Motorola now they own it.

Yeah, that's the right forum.
I looked at the N1, and had it been available when my Nexus 7 broke, it would have been on my short list. My only real issue is the aspect ratio. It's unclear at this time how well apps are going to play on th 4:3 screen. I've read that a lot of stuff doesn't really look great on the Nexus 9. That could turn out to be a totally groundless concern though, we'll see.

I'd bet it would be on a lot of shortlists. Nokia dropped the ball by not releasing this in time for Xmas. Would have ended up in a few stockings that may now get an Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact or Nexus 7/9 or LG G Pad 8.3 or iPad Mini...
Just trying to determine if CM11 (or other AOSP roms) can be ported to it. That would make it an awesome [almost budget] choice.

The display is the best part of this tablet, honestly. It's bright, the colors look great (to me at least), and the viewing angles are fantastic. It doesn't collect any more smudges than the display on my G2.
