htc one m8 in call volume - AT&T HTC One (M8)

got htc m8 phone from ebay in october
tested with my login, apps worked, speaker worked for music
the only thing i couldnt test is a real phone call
gave phone to wifey on x-mas
she did the wife thing, why did you buy phone without asking me, this is heavy, i dont like this etc. Finally activated the phone yesterday!
The only damn thing that doesnt work is in-call volume, I dont hear a thing, absolutely zero, nada
I did audio test with *#*#3424#*#*
looks like top speaker is not working?
is this a software issue
ebay sale is out of 90 day warranty, he listed it as mfr refurb
looks like I am toast.

Is the phone modded, or stock? I'd try a factory reset, but otherwise not mess with it. Its not your problem to fix.
It doesn't matter whether the previous owner still has warranty or not. He sold you a phone that doesn't function properly (possibly even knowingly). Either he needs to refund your money, or you can seek resolution through eBay. eBay will protect you, and get you your money back since the item is broken and doesn't match the item description.

not modded
phone was listed as unlocked
it is not modded, runs stock att software, I havent messed with it

eBay complaint needs to be filed within 30 days apparently: http://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/how-to-help.html
I though you were referring (in the OP) to the AT&T warranty on refurbs, which is 90 days.
>90 days is a pretty long time to find something like this. But I'd contact the seller anyway. Hard to know for sure, but it seems that the phone was broken to begin with. He probably doesn't have an obligation to do anything about it, but you never know. If its a vendor with good customer service, they might try to accommodate anyway. In any case, it doesn't hurt to ask, and see what the seller has to say.

Try a factory reset, or RUU. If those don't fix it, its probably defective hardware.

Sprint: Phone Replacement, Urgent PLease help!

Hey guys, I ran into quite a predicament today. As I was walking to work, I fell something fall out and slide half way across the parking lot. I felt me phone case (the crappy one that came with the phone), looked down on the ground and noticed it was my AWESOME Sprint Touch Pro. With the site of my phone moving in a hockey-like manner, I finished cursing and decided that I don’t want to have such an amazing phone looking like a piece of crap.
So here is where I am at. I need to get this phone fixed. I think that I might have a few options, but I want to know what you guys think. Originally, I bought this phone from a guy of Craigslist; it was $240, if you can believe it. Now, the phone had never been activated, so it was as if I was the original owner. Additionally, I never got a phone from sprint, but I am under contract. That means, according to sprint, that I am eligible for a new to get a new phone at anytime. Thus, I reach my questions and request for opinions.
Option 1 (least likely): Since the phone was never activated, can I still claim the 30-day phone guarantee from sprint? Meaning, can I return the phone as if it was defective?
Option 2 (What I will probably have to do): Should I buy a phone, get the equipment protection plan, and then process my touch pro as a defective phone. This seems like a relatively good idea, because I can get a phone pretty cheap (like the rant) and sell it on Ebay. So in the end, I make money off of this idea. The only down side is that my contract restarts, but I have only been with sprint for about four months. Also, I was going to save my free phone upgrade for next year so I could get a brand spanking new phone.
Option 3 (Don’t want to do this): Suck it up, and get a silicon case that covers the scratches. The scratches are only around the shiny part on the perimeter of the screen, which, by the way, says a lot about the quality of the screen.
Option 4 (Too much trouble): Sell it on eBay for as much as I can, and since it’s probable less than $300, put the rest out of pocket and buy a brand new touch pro from sprint.
Option 5 (Does it exits?): look for replacement housing. Since the phone is new, I don’t know if it’s even out there yet.
Thanks for all your input guys. I really hope to hear from some Sprint Reps or something. Meanwhile, I am going to try to sucker Sprint into helping me out.
P.S Yes, I know what I am doing is unethical, and that the phone is not really defective, thus I should not be returning it as defective.
I think I am having trouble understanding what happened. You have scratched your touch pro that you bought from someone else, I got that.
You never activated the phone on sprint? You should go ahead and put the phone one your account and get insurance immediately!
If you have only been with Sprint for 4 months how are you eligible for an upgrade?
If it is only chrome scratched my TP came like that. Look at the chrome around the keyboard section. At all 3 corners, excluding the Stylus one check for a "Seam" in the chrome, if it has this you can take it in and exchange at a Sprint store.
A scratched phone on Ebay will go for MUCH less than a regular one.
I am not here to tell you whether you are ethical or not, but you should exhaust all options that seem less unethical first before trying to make someone else pay for your mistake. That being said, I think everyone in the world would try to get a new phone for free, so I wouldn't feel too bad.
The phone is activated on sprint, but the person that sold it to me never activated it. It has been only a few days since I activated, can I still add the TEP? And are they going to charger a deductible, cuz they'll charge me $55 to fix it.
I am eligible for an upgrade cuz I never got a phone from sprint.
So if it has some defects I could take it back, even though I have no TEP? Unfortunately, the phone is flawless other than my stupid scratches.
TBH, I don't fell doing this to sprint. They have screwed me over many times over. This would just even it out.
If it is activated just go ahead and get insurance. You can add it anytime. They will charge deductible normally, but instead of telling them its because of scratches tell them you are experiencing poor battery life and that you can't hear anything in the speaker because it sounds like a tin can.
Oh, you never purchased a phone when you switched. I was confused. Thanks for clarification.
Look for those seams, almost every TP has them and they will switch for free without TEP. They are hard to notice but mine has em and I am going to switch soon.
They have screwed me repeatedly and I would be doing the same thing. Haha, I wasn't trying to preach in my post before.
Is there a grace period to get it? I thought it was like 30 days. Yea, I can lie to them, no problem. Though my bat life is amazing. play with it all day and never has died on me.
Can you direct me to a link to where this seams thingy is being discussed, or where the sources where u got this is at. I want to read some on it. Or maybe some pics, I didn't really know where to look.
Yea, well, they decided to renew my contract, and it said they had returned my deposit...I'm definitely going to use that against them.
To be honest, they have messed up so many times, I have only paid my full bill about 2 times.
I Heard my Sprint Rep. say that the insurance can only be added within the first 30 days.
So here is the rub....How do they know when you purchased it? Unfortunately logic would say that the insurance only applies to devices purchased directly from the carrier, but I hope I am wrong.

Unless they changed the policy, that's not true. I had a phone for 6 months before I added the insurance online through the My Account feature.
But it's possible that has been changed and no longer do able.
Guys Thanks for all your responses, they are very informative.
So Basically here, I am leaning towards trying to see if I can get insurance added. I don't know how hard of a task this will be, but I hope that they can be persuaded into helping me out.
If not, I will just get a cheap phone and sell it.
Again, I am aware of the ethical lines being crossed, but wit sprint, those lines seem almost unreal.
update (Sorry about the double post):
So to my surprise srpint sent this in an email:
Regarding the call from the technical department, I have forwarded your
concern to the appropriate department.
The handset on the account is under 30 day return period. You can visit
the nearest Sprint store and replace the handset.
Thank you again for contacting Sprint. Have a great day!

its 30 days from the day you activate the phone...so you can go to a sprint store or call customer service and add insurance
as a tech in a sprint affiliate store i WOULD NOT swap you out for free because of cosmetic damage. So you are looking at paying 50 through Asurion(the insurance company)

they are full of crap lol
you cant return a phone you never purchased from a sprint store lol
Well, well see. I am going to request a return kit from them, as they said that they would do. If not, then what ever.
BTW, the phone doesn't look like its been dropped or has any cracks. The excuse, "Its been in my pocket with my keys," would fly without a hitch.
We shall see what happens.
Sorry man, haven't been around the Computer. I had insurance on my touch I bought off of ebay. I had ins on my phone before and when I activated the phone it just went ahead and switched it over to my touch. So you should be fine adding it.
You can probably send it to them, but what are they going to give you back? You paid them $0 for the phone, so be careful, that may be what they give you.
Here is the site you requested talking about the chrome seams.

Yea, as I thought, I don't have that problem on my phone.
So if I understand your correctly, you bought a phone from Ebay, and added insurance to it?
Sorry about double post. I just added TEP, took it in. Told them about some errors, no lies. Just some stuff that happens with the phone. Of course I know its normal, but they didn't know that. They gave me a brand new TP, and let me keep the old battery.

Sprint store insurance replacement beware

So I was having a weird issue with my wifi turning on and off until it errors out. SO I took it in and they said it was my apps causing the prob... actually it started happening when I updated the software a few months ago...
3 hours go by, they completely remove the phone software and re-load it.. still no good.. so they said they would order me a phone and it would be in wednesday 'today' this all happened monday.
so I go pick it up, he puts the battery in and re-assembled the case, all was good... when I get home; I sat on the couch and got ready to re-download all my apps which is when I notice that the 'back' button isnt lit... like the LED is bad or just not there. So I think... maybe its supposed to be like that. NO, I looked at an old video I took of my phone and everything worked..
so I get to snooping around by taking the phone case apart and found a sticker saying ' VTO 10/06/2011' VTO means I have no idea, however I also found some weird sticky goo where the seam of the case goes...
clearly this phone is either re-furbished poorly or straight up used... I paid full price for that phone and I expect a replacement Identical to the one I bought.
keep an eye out if you use your insurance for an in-store exchange.
All in store DHRP/insurance replacements are refurbished devices regardless of whether a claim was filed and deductible paid or not. I don't agree with the process myself, however sometimes it works to your advantage. Currently if you have an Evo 4G and take it to a store with a problem that justifies replacement, they can order you an Evo 3D in it's place. It always just depends on the current exchange lists. As for the refurb part, there's not really any way of avoiding it.
That really blows, I'd go raise hell and at least get one that doesn't look jacked up. Even refurbs are supposed to "look" brand new, the chipset is the only used part. Generally anything within your first 30 days, you can exchange for another brand new device, after that, it's refurbs. Best of luck to ya.
The backlight on the button should allow you to exchange for another one. It is clearly defective. Can't blame that one on no app.....
That sucks man. On Monday I took my og evo in with a broken screen and I had insurance . They replaced it with a new in box evo 3d.
That's why I don't like sprint's insurance. With the bestbuy insurance, they'll take it, no questions asked. They'll have it replaced in 2-3 days and will give you one that was repaired so well you can't tell if it was new. Also, my replacement wasn't updated so I could S-OFF it.
I've had other phones replaced there and its the same thing. For older phone models, they just give a new one.
Next time you buy your phone, get it from bestbuy with insurance.
fml, fml,mother fml....
so I show up in the store today after work,.. talked to miguel 'spoke about 10 words of english' and he basically told me if its not within 14 days of the purchase date he couldnt do anything... then he showed me the door.
I asked him what the MFG warranty was... he said to call them.. wow
I called them in the store and clearly explained how he was a **** in front of everyone hoping he would do something... but he just walked into the back room and i never saw him again.
another 2 hours on the phone 'no joke' and that got me nowhere...
At this point... id rather just have my old phone back =( problems or not... at least I know it was taken care of.

"Key"important facts to know when buying Htc one outright

One thing to rememebr if you need insurance get it within 14 days of your purchase date ,apparently people who got the phone before it has been exclusive to all stores which should be may 1st I was told by two reputable sources have no insurance option on" PREPAID plan ONLY"
It's because it hasn't made It into tmobiles system as a option for prepaid plans yet ...even tho every other phone is ,it will pop up the day it's released in all stores .....so make sure you go back and get it if you were wanting it and told u can't ,if you was one of the many who got it before launch..

you can get the Full PHP which is the insurance and lifetime warranty right now in any T-Mo store as well as with Customer Care. the T-Mo rep has to call in to Customer Care for your and ask that they put on the $11.99 bundle. I have had to do it since the 24th when the phone was put out in the T-Mo store i would in, but yes. You have 14 days to get PHP if you want it. You just have to make sure you don't do anything to the phone in that 14 days you have it.

I would agree to a point. some people out there have a high chance they will drop and break the phone. That means you pay $175 for a replacement instead of $580 again. Also remember that part of that 12 is a lifetime warranty. ppl that might want to keep this phone for a long will be able to change the phone out when the battery goes out for whatever reason. also not everyone knows how to flash roms and such so it is for the avg person that knows nothing. Trust i would never pay it but some people get it because of the risk of breaking the phone. Why do ppl get car insurance. Its because you have a chance to F up their car and want it fixed. Its the same idea. it all depends on the person. I have seen people come into my T-Mo Store 2 times within the 1st year because their kid throw their phone or their kid dropped it in water. That would mean they now paid 350 for 2 new phones instead of 1160 on top of the phone they already paid for. Its got its good points and bad points.

People get car insurance because its illegal not to carry it lol but I get your point. I guess I'm just careful with my phones... I broke the Hero (the LCD cracked internally, the external glass was fine... really weird) and I broke a Sony Ericsson T300 by throwing it on the ground in a fit of rage... Then again, I always put my phones in a case right off the bat (except for my Blackberries - never had to worry about those).
Then again, this is HTC... And I've had issues with EVERY HTC device I've ever had so maybe its worth it.
My guy said it wouldn't give the option In system when I paid outright price .. he said it could have been because it's not yet out fficially in all stores , what he did was scan a s3 for me and separately added the Insurance on my prepaid 70$ account and then told me once I activate the htc one it would just show that as my Device on my line and that the insurance would Carry over to the new phone .
It was a tricky way to do it but works , I only made the topic to help safeguard the option if others were noticing this issue on an outright purchase for this phone in particular

Yea there is two ways we can ring a phone out in our system at the store. The fast way which is a system called POS and the slower way which is called CHIU. if you go through POS, they haven't made it yet so we can add the $11.99 one, but if you go though CHIU it does it for you. This was a problem when the Iphone was put out as well. In the end if you have the $7.99, it will auto change to the $11.99 when the system sees you are using a phone that needs the $11.99 one.

Not every state makes you have car insurance. Some states its your choice. Not i think that is more down south then up north, but i am not sure. A little fact or being off topic.

Wait, what? Which state would that be?
I personally have thought about dropping the insurance from tmobile as when I got my Note 2 they changed my 7.99 plan to 11.99. That is basically 5 more bucks a month, which equates to 60 more a year. I have it on two phones now... So 120 a year. Ridiculous!
Going to shop around before dropping it, but how much higher can things keep going until enough is enough!
Tmobile does away with contracts to save people money, but find ways to raise other parts of your contract still, only if you have a tier E device though.....
Fancy pants Note ||
Wth, the rep and order shows 7.99 insurance and $150 deductible. No way in hell would I keep insurance if it is 12 and 175, that is Sprint level ;p. Definitely will go squaretrade then or keep my old phone on sprint.

AT&T HTC One - Warranty transferable? (Blown speakers)

I bought a "like new" HTC One off of eBay. At first it seemed great and really did look like new.
Unfortunately I've come to realize the speakers are blown. Any audio above 50% volume crackles/buzzes. Sounds HORRIBLE at 90% volume +
Does anyone know if HTC or AT&T will cover their phones under warranty if you're not the original owner? I know with Apple the warranty is tied to the phone, I could buy a iPhone 5 off of eBay today, and if next week it starts acting up I could take it into Apple and they would replace it.
I contacted HTC support and at first of course they said "lets see if its a software problem, reset the phone blah blah" did the factory reset and of course it didn't help. Even when the phone boots up the AT&T jingle is distorted and buzzes. I told them the factory reset didn't fix the problem and the reply I got was something like:
"We are always updating the software to fix bugs. Be on the lookout for updates for your device to see if it fixes your problem."
...so a software update is going to magically repair the hardware of the speakers? Awesome. Anyway, even if they do ask me to send it in for repair do you guys know if it would be covered under warranty since I'm not the original owner?
Or would I be able to walk into AT&T and ask them to repair or replace it? Thanks.
Just call ATT, Tell them the speakers are not working. You have done a hard reset and they still dont work.
Say nothing more. And nothing less. Pay the 15 bucks for 2 day shipping.

I got mine off Ebay as well.. Did they check the s/n, imei, or need a receipt?
I would also like an answer. I bought a used htc one recently and the top speaker is crackling like mad when the volume is about 3/4 the way up.
I know the phone has a one year warranty through htc. Anybody have any luck getting a replacement from htc or at&t?
Does the warranty transfer over to a second owner?
thanks!
Speakers are defective but screen has small crack? Warranty valid?
My phone has the same issue, but it has a very small crack on the screen.
Is the Warranty still valid? Is it true that if the screen is cracked the warranty is invalid?

I'm curious how you made out...did they replace the phone?
I literally just got off the phone with att. They did want to do a reset, but I told them I already did that. The lady, asked how I did it. So say you went into backup/restore. And tried restoring that way. She also asked about the water sensor under the phones flash. If there was any red in it. After that it was address verification, and telling me I'm the best part of att. No 15$ fee, no nothing.

Warranty Replacement due to Camera issue advice

So I have the purple camera issue (like everyone else apparently) and I'm wondering a few things.
First off is it worth it to go through AT&T for a replacement? I have been reading that people are getting Phones back that are in poor shape, and not only that but the issue is recurring in the replacement phones as well.
Secondly I am assuming I will need to relock my bootloader and un root my phone to send it back, correct? My concern is if I get a replacement phone with 4.3 already installed am I limited in my ability to root/s-off, etc?
Third, am I maybe better off sucking it up and sending to HTC and losing my phone for a week? If I do that do I need to relock/clear/etc?
Anyone... Bueller?
I'd say it's worth a shot. The worst thing that can happen, is you receive an unsatisfactory replacement device (whether it be too used/damaged for your tastes, or has a purple camera.) You can simply return it in this case, letting AT&T know that you aren't satisfied with the replacement.
I had my One replaced via warranty, and really lucked out, as it would seem I received a brand new One in return (still had the grey IMEI decal and AT&T "DON'T TXT & DRIVE" plastic wrap on it.) The camera sensor date is 5-22, but I've yet to encounter any purple with the camera, thankfully. My defective One had a 5-01 sensor date, and the purple was awful, showing up even in well-lit pictures.
IF YOU GO THIS ROUTE!!! Pay for tracking and insurance at USPS when you return the device with the prepaid postage label and packaging. This is for your peace of mind. AT&T handles warranty returns through a third party called SmartLabel/Newgistics, and there are quite a number of complaints about this company.
My complaint? The tracking number assigned to my return package was "not found" via their tracking site until nearly 3 weeks had passed. During this time, I was getting e-mails and phone calls from AT&T, warning me that they had not received my device, and that I'd be charged up to $900 if I didn't return it within 10 days. Apparently, Newgistics just sits on the package in a queue until they decide to attend to it. That's a really ****ty feeling to have looming over your head for 3 weeks -- thinking your phone was either lost or stolen -- and it can be avoided if you just cough up 5 bucks for tracking and insurance at the post office.
Also, one last tip, if you're concerned your device may be considered "damaged" (AT&T doesn't offer a warranty replacement for damaged phones, and will make you pay for the replacement.) Bring your phone to any AT&T location, tell them you're interested in getting a warranty replacement, and have them inspect your phone. They can put a note on your account that the phone is not damaged. Of course, this is different from water damage, which they cannot determine (due to the sealed construction) until you mail it in

I'd say it's worth a shot. The worst thing that can happen, is you receive an unsatisfactory replacement device (whether it be too used/damaged for your tastes, or has a purple camera.) You can simply return it in this case, letting AT&T know that you aren't satisfied with the replacement.

Thanks for the reply. Was your device rooted or did you clear all that before sending it?
Sorry, forgot to address that. My device wasn't rooted, but it was unlocked and S-OFF'd with the GPE CID. Before sending it back, I changed the CID back to the AT&T-appropriate one (something like CWS__001) and restored via the stock Android 4.3/Sense 5.0 RUU. I did not relock or S-ON the device. They haven't yet received my return, however. From what I've read of AT&T's warranty department (regarding other Android phones,) they don't seem to care/notice what has been done, so long as the stock OS/firmware is present, and appears to be stock.

Ok cool will give it a try
I would recommend you attempt to unroot and restore the phone as much as possible before sending it in, though! My above post should not be interpreted as a guarantee that they will accept a rooted/tampered phone.

Yeah once I root the new one and copy my data and stuff over I will do the best to relock up the old one.
Purple Tint Also
Hi everyone,
I also have this purple tint issue. I have had the phone since 7/10/13, and I keep thinking that the next software update will fix the camera issue. I was hoping 4.3 would fix it, nope. Now i'm hoping for 4.4 but I am thinking it will not do anything. I was going to wait until the 4.4 update comes out to see if this will fix it or not.
I purchased my AT&T HTC One from Best Buy. Would I have to go through HTC to replace it with the warranty or could I go through AT&T? Would you suggest one over another? Also, would they give me a hassle about replacing it because of this camera issue by like trying to say it's not their fault?
This will be the first time that I have had to replace a phone. Do I have to send it in and then I will be without a phone while they replace it or will they send me a replacement, then I send my phone to them?
Thank you in advance!

I would probably go into an ATT store and see if they can exchange it out right there. I would think, if you have your receipt they would. If not, I would then head into best buy and have them do it. You have one year warranty. I bought mine through att and just went in last week to exchange it, and the gal actually did it right there and loaded the info on the new one, however it was the 32 gb model, and I own a 64gb model. She had to place a order for another one which was sent to me FedEx.
I just go it yesterday, took only 3 days shipping, and now I have 10 days to put my old one in the box and get it shipped back to them. Pretty simple and painless really. I haven't turned the new one on yet, my initial observation looks pretty much identical to my old one, with no physical defects of the new (refurbished) unit.
I just hope the innards are just as pristine as mine was. I also relocked it, s-on, unrooted and restored att software to it. Didn't want to take the chance of some crap coming back on me.
Thanks!

In my case (blown speaker), I had to go to a special warranty store. They wouldnt replace it at a normal store for me. But the device service center or whatever it was did replace mine on the spot with no shipping, so that was a plus even if the drive was a bit out of the way.
I suppose I got lucky as well as I'd never heard of this purple camera issue and while I'm sure this phone isn't brand new, its been working alright. I've had terrible luck with the One, with this being my third replacement.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
I just had mine replaced due to that issue, and the seams on the plastic, and the phone mic didn't work right, andd the screen had like 10 dead pixels lol.
Anyways got the new one back hoping for the camera to magically be better..it isn't. Still junk lol. Semi sharp and tons of noise in the picture. As soon as you zoom in for detail BAM noise. It is a phone camera and hey, at least it doesn't go purple anymore right? Oh my phone was in like new condition when it came, zero scratches (or it would have been sent right back to them).

Okay so I just talked to AT&T and after some troubleshooting to prove it wasn't software related, they just placed an order for a "refurbished" device that I should get in 5-6 business days. Hopefully the camera works and all of the pixels are there too!
Thanks for the info everyone!
