Let's start by saying that I'm an idiot. An idiot without access to a PC. There we go, that's out of the way now. Alright, so I went online and used Towelroot to root my new (Verizon) Galaxy S3. (Rootchecker confirmed that I have root access) So, I decided to try to install a new ROM. Here are the steps I took:
-installed Rom Manager from google play
-downloaded a ROM for lollipop (5.0?)
-followed all setup prompts in rom manager
-pressed the buttons in the mod manager to install a rom from the SD card
So, here's my problem: The system shut down and tried to load recovery. An error message popped up saying that there is software that is unauthorized by verizon, and to take it to the nearest verizon store. I cannot do that because I have no money for repairs (as it is rooted), and my parents will absolutely KILL me if they find out that I screwed up my new phone. So far I have been able to start the phone by entering download mode and pressing 'cancel', but I cannot factory reset my phone at all because the error prevents me from entering recovery mode. I just want to have this thing reset.
Please give help in the terms you would use to help a 5 year old. I am a COMPLETE noob when it comes to techy stuff.

If you are able to enter download mode try to flash your phone via Odin.
ROM here: sammobile.com/firmwares/download/31550/I535VRUDNE1_I535VZWDNE1_VZW.zip/
Youtube video: youtube.com/watch?v=_PSt8b5D2dM&t=320
Without PC you need MobileOdin.
First I advise to learn by reading the sticky-threads.
Then flash a modern TWRP-recovery.
At last choose a ROM, that meets your demands.
Don't skip step 1. By trial&error you potter a brick!

THIS WILL FIX YOUR ISSUE AS I WENT THROUGH THE SAME PROBLEM YOU ARE EXPERIENCING.
WARNING IT WILL DELETE YOUR DATA. IF YOUR DATA IS IMPORTANT FIND ANOTHER MEANS...
You MUST have Kies full installed on the desktop/laptop and make sure you're updated to the latest version.
1) Boot your note into download mode(hold down volume button at the same time as the power button, let go of power button when you feel
your phone vibrate but keep holding down button until you see a prompt to push up volume button to continue or down volume button to
cancel, hit the up button your are now in download mode.)
2) Connect your Note to the laptop with factory USB cable
2) Launch Kies on your desktop (full version)
4) Choose Tools, Firmware upgrade & initialization
a) While in download mode, pull battery and enter the S/N & model name (ALL CAPS!!)
b) It will prompt to initialize to original settings. Click "YES"
c) It will prompt to initialize the latest version. Click "YES"
d) It will download the firmware upgrade components (DO NOT DISCONNECT THE DEVICE!!)
5) It will prompt for firmware upgrade and initialization.
a) Click check box for reading above information
b) Click your choice if you want your information saved on Samsung Kies corporate servers (I choose WITHOUT saving).
Just kick back, wait and the phone will update to the original out of box software with the latest updates already applied. No issue with anything, no tripping of the flash counter, and Samsung/AT&T knows now different (if you tripped the counter back before performing this, or performed the process of installing CWM recovery through ADB as to NOT trip the flash counter when changing recovery).
This is the EXACT process I did, and had an AT&T tech verify and it's not detectable I was rooted, and was running a custom ICS ROM. Now, I will qualify that I DID the Recovery installation with ADB so that I didn't trip the counter with the Recovery installation. So if they are able to check the binary information to detect modification even with flash counter reset, that's out of my hands and can't confirm or deny.

You cannot root an ice rom with a gb kernel. You need to find a rooted ics kernel and flash it with Odin. Keep in mind it needs to be an Odin flashable .tar. if you need help finding one pm me and I will direct you to one.

Rooting is very easy and quite low risk as long as your getting your information from reliable sources. The xda community is very knowledgeable and generous. MOST of the information you find here can be taken to heart.

Hi all,
Im new to the forum and did some searching but cant find the info i need. I tried rooting my verizon note 2 to casuals one click and didnt realize i had updated to android 4.3 prior. So it tried to root 4.1.2. Now my phone has the yellow triangle and says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I tried kies and kies 3 and neither one recognizes my phone. The only way to shut the phone off is to pull the battery. When i reinstall the battery i have a brief window to volume down+home+power and it takes me to odin. I saw this problem in the forums for roms but couldnt find anything on rooting. Please tell me i can fix this and go back to stock, and i didnt lock my phone up for good.I know im an idiot and i didnt back up anything. Ive learned my lesson and will do more research before attempting this again.I also realized there is no root for 4.3 yet. My phone was stock before i tried all this. Its the verizon sch-1605.Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Couple of things:
- if you've received the 4.3 update, your bootloader is locked and (currently) un-touchable. Don't try to flash, well, anything.
- if you've received the 4.3 update, you've also received Samsung's odius KNOX technology. If you do try to flash anything most things (especially recoveries), you'll trip the KNOX counter and invalidate your warranty (I believe it also means you can't use your phone in enterprise setups that use KNOX)
The good news is that you can restore your phone to working order! You'll need to install the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant. XDA member scoobysnack posted a link to download the software, though you can also get it from any functioning Verizon Samsung smartphone that's plugged into a computer.
After you've installed the software, turn your phone on and plug it into the computer. Run the software and select the tab on the left column titled 'Repair'. Click on the repair button near the right side and sit back & wait. The software will download the 4.3 OTA and install it. Like ODIN, it is imperative that you not unplug your phone during this process.
If you have trouble getting the software to recognize your phone, it may help to put it into download mode. I had to go through this myself (I foolishly forgot about the bootloader issue and tried to flash a recovery. Sigh).
You can achieve root for 4.3, but there are some serious concerns about Kingo, the software the provides root. XDA doesn't allow links to them due to unanswered questions about privacy concerns due to unusual traffic capture going between the software and (apparently) servers in China
thanks so much. ill try it in the morning when i get off work.
Also when i was in odin and plugged my phone in, the software on the pc didnt recognize my phone either. Is that something i should worry about. I guess the box was supposed to turn green but never did. Many thanks
ok so i got home today and tried downloading verizon software update from the link you gave and it wont open the program. Ive tried on 2 different computers. so i called verizon tech to see if they have it cause i can only find it on the website described eariler, and they said they dont have it. Its only in your phone. Well i cant access my phone to get it and im stumped. They said to go into a verizon store and they should be able to fix it. What are my options? I dont have any data on the phone i need to save so can i just go back to a previous version or wipe it out? Or do i have to do a custom rom? Thanks in advance.

When you go into ODIN mode (turn off your phone, power on using POWER+HOME+VOL-DOWN), do you a line that reads 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID'? It would be in the upper left corner under 'SYSTEM STATUS'.
I ask because if you don't have that line, you didn't upgrade to 4.3 and your bootloader is NOT locked. You should be able to flash to 4.1.2 from ODIN and go from there (CASUAL to unlock & root, et cetera).
If you do have that line, then your only option is the VZW Software assistant. I'm uploading it now and I'll send you a link via PM. Please keep in mind that if you use the VZW Software assistant, whether your bootloader is currently locked or not, it most definitely will be locked after using it. If you're already locked, no harm done, but I'd make sure first.
Hello,
I've had my S3 for over a year now and it has been mostly running great. Whenever I've had issues I tried to solve them by myself, but this time I was unable to fix my phone, so I must ask for help.
Here's what happened. I left my phone on my desk today and one of my co-workers fiddled with it. He opened SuperSU and then a message popped up saying that SU binary needs to be updated. He then choose to update it via CWM. The phone then restarted and upon starting shows the startup screen then it tries to enter the recovery, but instead it just shows it for a brief moment and then it restarts again. It keeps doing that over and over again. If I remove the battery and then insert it back again, the phone will turn on by itself and continue to reboot after failing to open CWM.
I tried to enter the recovery, but had no success. The phone did enter the Download Mode though, but flasing a ROM via ODIN will remove all of the data stored on the phone and I really need it. The phone is currently running Android Revolution HD 40.
Is there a way to get my phone operational again without loosing the data stored on it?
Thanks in advance.

First of all what are co workers doing messing with your phone I would seriously not be happy!! screen lock comes to mind!
As the above post said flash another recovery in odin I recommend Philz recovery, backup your data in recovery then factory reset if that does not work flash another rom via recovery or return to stock with odin. You can also boot into recovery with adb but I would try above first.
Then charge your co-worker for all the time wasted trying to fix phone
Thank you so much for the idea, I just tried this and it worked! After flashing new recovery via ODIN, I'm now able to access my phone. There was no need to flash the ROM again, as it was fine, the only problem was with the recovery.
And I still have my data!
Thank you very much again, cheers

He's actually a good guy and I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. He told me that he was playing a game and he tried to add more coins using GameCIH. Then the prompt to allow root access to the app came up along with a notification to update the SU binary. He said he pressed that button by mistake. I wasn't mad at the guy, I was only upset that I may lose my data.

Hello, everyone! I'm in search of a hero who can help me resolve this (frustrating) issue! I'm sure you have heard it before: my phone will not boot fully; it is instead stuck permanently on the white VERIZON logo screen.
Model: SCH-I545
Carrier: VERIZON
Color: BLACK
Size: 16GB
The phone has not been rooted.
It does not have USB debugging enabled.
I have not installed any custom recovery software or mods.
There is no external SD card installed.
First, some back story. My phone asked me to perform a software update roughly a week ago. About a minute into the update, it told me the update failed. I assume this occurred because I was on the train and passed through a tunnel. Afterwards, my phone began acting up, rebooting itself randomly, and applications(such as web browser, text messaging) would randomly crash on me. I assumed another update would come to resolve the issue, but unfortunately yesterday(Sunday), my phone again rebooted itself, only this time it would not make it past the white VERIZON screen.
My goal is simply to recover my files from the device before either returning it or performing a factory reset. I have scoured the internet for hours trying to find a way to achieve this. I can boot my device into the stock recovery console and into ODIN download mode. I have tried clearing my phone's cache in recovery mode, which did not help. I have tried booting into safe mode by repeatedly tapping the menu screen, but it did not help.
I have ADB installed and a USB driver from Samsung and a USB driver from Google. I can get my phone to appear using ADB in sideload mode only while in the recovery console. Unfortunately, this is of limited use because apparently it can only be used to install software packages, and the phone seemingly rejects all attempts to install packages such as CWM and TWRK, which I had hoped would allow me to use the ADB pull command.
I have tried installing these mods using ODIN as well. Again, failure due to security apparently. :crying:
If anyone has any idea how I can retrieve the files from my phone, you'll be my hero forever!

Sounds like that upgrade definitely went wrong. Since you were upgrading to Kit Kat I'd say flash the No Wipe file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172
Your phone won't allow for CWM or TWRP recoveries since it's a build past MDK. Also if you want prior to using that Odin file go to play store and get the app " Samsung phone info" and run that app and take a screen shot of the bootloader section. Actually do that before hand anyways. I'll link you to it

Yea I think people have to much faith in Verizon. There not setup to handle anything but a perfect download and install when it comes to their OTAs. They're best done on WiFi at home

Hi BeefJerkyAddict,
I would reccomend to do a total full wipe with Odin, this usually solves all of your problems. All of your stuff should be clear for restoring once you do that. But after you do the full wipe, immediately go to settings and then software update because your phone will be on android 4.3 and not 4.4.2.
Here is the link with the instructions as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
You're welcome.
Yea I guess I'm just biased to updating straight to kit kat lol if the op has the chance to stay on mk2 he might as well. And I suggested no wipe first just so not to lose data. Up to the op though

Hi guys,
Just posting to say THANK YOU for the help. After a long download, I got ahold of the VRUFNC5 No-Wipe file and successfully installed it using ODIN3 v3.09 without a hitch! All of my pictures, videos, text messages, are all right where they were, and my operating system is upgraded.
Thank you so much for taking the time to point me in the right direction. I had nearly given up!
Hi
I am really hoping someone can help me. I have been trying for weeks now to fix my phone: Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100G. In July I stupidly updated from Gingerbread, which was working perfectly, to 4.1.2. Now my phone is practically useless. It switches itself off all the time, unless I just use it as a clock. Essentially I can only use it when it is plugged in. So I decided to try rooting it to do a battery calibration. With my mac I used heimdall to flash a rooted kernel and didn't get the full messages I expected: the final line about reattaching drivers was missing. Then when I used a terminal simulator or superuser on the phone I got an error: no su binary installed etc. So I decided to try using my linux machine last night. This time I got the full feed in terminal, so it looked like the installation was successful, but the same thing: the phone was not actually rooted.
I had also tried unsuccessfully to go back to gingerbread using the mac, no luck. Last night I was so frustrated that I decided to try installing cyanogenmod. At this point I have very little to lose: the alternative is to pay to unlock my old nokia and use that as an actual phone. I tried using the cyanogenmod wiki instructions (which I am not allowed to link to) but pushing to the sdcard didn't work. I got some error: is a directory. Note that when doing the factory reset through CWM recovery it said there was an error formatting the sdcard (something like android_secure. I should have written all of this down). Then I tried sideloading but I just got stuck on the sideload screen on the phone and had to restart the phone. I also found a guide about rooting through CWM recovery but it involves the same push method which just doesn't work. I guess that the problem is the sdcard formatting (note that after last night's factory reset I still have photos on my phone which shouldn't have survived) but I don't know what to do about it. I did try "format sdcard" from recovery mode but that failed.
I am comfortable with command line stuff but will need step by step instructions. I am not an expert at all, have just been reading a lot over the last few weeks trying to fix this. My flash counter now shows 14 or something (some resulted in soft bricking). I don';t know what I am doing wrong. Please help!
