So I have an HTC One M8 and I'm trying to figure out a way to install a version Lollipop the GPE without having to root my phone is there a way to do that if so please let me no asap.
Why don't you want root ?...I'm guessing you're s-on,which will make it harder to use the latest lollipop firmware. You can,but you have to modify the Android text file inside the firmware.zip.it's best to s-off (in my opinion). Since you have a stock recovery...there'd be no way of flashing a lollipop rom.

Use sunshine to get s-off, it's 25 bucks...
Unlock Bootloader /flash a custom recovery /get s-off and change your CID to 11111111 and get all the lollipop 5.0 you want

"Only" 2 months? I s-off'ed my M8 the first day I had it.
Seriously though, just so you know s-off is way more down the rabbit hole than root. Like a previous response said, why don't you want to root.
**** that means I have to spend 25 bucks alright thanks!
Yea you could look at it that way $25 to get lollipop now, or wait for AT&T and get it free in a couple months probably.

Help has arrive
I had to switch to my laptop in order to write this, as I plan on making it a rather long reply.....
S-Off means "security off"
S-On means "security on"
You are typing in the AT&T forum's, so it's safe to say that you got your phone stock from the store. The device comes S-on (this means that HTC does not want you to change the firmware or any other part of the phone because the average user may not know what they are doing, and can really mess up their device....S-on is more secure in the sense that if you try to flash another firmware different from what HTC shipped it on, the process will not work. With S-off, you pull these restrictions and you are allowed to flash any kind of firmware you want to (granted that it is the M8's firmware) (flashing any other firmware or rom will certainly destroy your device, by destroy I do mean brick).....Achieving S-off in the old days was a lot harder than achieving s-off these days. All it requires is a small payment, and you will unlock all of the potential of the device....Think of it as a woman....the more your sweet talk your way into her pants. The more likely you will get to see her treasures.....With all of this being said, I will move on....
First thing first
1. you need HTC drivers for your phone to be recognized by your computer
*Side note- if you have a Windows 8.1 computer let me know because I have the drivers you will need for your phone to be recognized, if you have a Windows 7 platform. You can simply search for the drivers yourself, but these drivers will usually be handled by downloading the HTC sync software then deleting the software, but maintaining the drivers already on your computer. The driver acts a bridge (if you cut the bridge, you can't reach the other side).....Take into account that with both systems one can simply find the drivers themselves by using Google...In all of my years of dealing with "Android". If I did not know the answer, I "googled it"....Get use to hearing this as it is a common theme around here...
2. You need a peripheral connection, AKA....ADB/fastboot...
*ADB is Android Debug Bridge (simplest way of explaining this-it allows your computer and phone to talk to each other through the use of command prompt in conjunction with keyboard simulative typing of fastboot commands) Ie....Fastboot erase cache, fastboot flash, fastboot oem writecid, etc....
Here is your first use of me telling you to google:
GOOGLE IT
Now here's me being nice : you can find a minimal ADB tool by searching "tool adb minimal xda" ( I use the entire Android SDK, which can be found by well you guessed it, using google). You do not need to download Android studio, just once again type into google, "android sdk stand alone....It will require that you have JRE installed, so use google once more....and find JRE (Java Realtime Environment)....I believe the latest is 8, or something like that....
3. When you have the first two options complete, get back with me....and I will be glad to help you out
Start learning google.....
BTW:
I gave a guy some advice on android rooting in my C++ class tonight, and Im wondering if that's you because when I first replied to your cry for help....I realized it was 40+ minutes from the time I got out of class....If so, hey bud.....

Anybody know when the new revolutionary 1.5 hboot update is being released? I bought my phone from Best Buy and the sales rep took it upon herself to update my phone for me. HTC's way is gay and I'd rather wait.

haven't seen anything posted yet. the best places to contact (or be in contact with) revolutionary is their irc channel on freenode, #revolutionary.
it will be interesting to see how they approach supporting the later version, i.e. whether they completely replace the bootloader or exploit htc's unlock method.
we all anxiously await!
Appreciate it. I've been searching for a week now.

htc method works for me. its a little annoying to flash a rom (need to do fastboot boot recovery to flash it) but it's still full root and stuff.
the title is a bit misleading. and I hope it breaks through soon
i just got my fone off of ebay today. it was already updated. guess im dead in the water for now
I used HTC's method to unlock and get root, I am on 2.5 and updated as well because my first intentions for the phone was not to root it, and now I am kicking my ass for updating to 1.50 Hboot. But either way, here is how HTC's method has worked for me in case any of you are thinking about doing it and wondering if it is worth the trouble. Yes, it is worth the trouble. Instructions and time to do it all in all wasn't even that bad in my opinion, and now at least I can flash roms (which I have been doing a lot this past week back and fourth). However I want a pure AOSP rom, with pretty much NOTHING sense, no sense dialer apk, contacts apk, evo stock messaging apk... a lot of the "AOSP" roms out there now still have some of these things that I have tried. So basically I want CM 7, cuz that's the best AOSP rom I have ever used... and I downloaded the Alpha build from Toast, but it requires S-OFF.. which doing HTC's method does not turn S-OFF... so it makes me sad So hopefully this gets kickin soon!

I had no idea HTC forces two or more men to engage in sexual acts just to get the boot loader unlocked. That is just not right!

Here are the instructions I went to and followed and worked just fine. the website requires you to create an account before you view the goodness, but of course that is free. Other than that, you just need to download a few things; one being the HTC Sync program, and a couple of Zip files, but after you do that, follow the instructions and you'll be good to go! Need any other help please don't hesitate, feel free to ask!

I did the HTC 1.5 "rooting" method successfully.
My problem now is that adb won't recognize my phone when I'm in fastboot (trying to flash ROM/Kernal). If I'm in the ROM it recognizes it, if I'm in recovery it recognizes it, when I did the 1.5 "root" it recognized it.
However when I get to the point of trying to fastboot into recovery it doesn't see it using the "adb devices" command.
I've tried reinstalling SDK several times, I've tried reinstalling the USB drivers several times, I've tried all of it on two different computers (one xp, one windows seven), debugging is allowed and fast boot is not checked.
This is a problem for flashing ROMs AND Kernals obviously.
Any ideas?

that's because you need to use fastboot, not adb, when you're in fastboot. google htc fastboot drivers g1. they're for the g1 but work fine for all other htc phones. put it in the same directory as adb. and the command is
fastboot devices
so yeah, there's your problem
omg I was stuck on a step that was already completed....thanks for your help! First droid, first root, first flash successful

I need some help, and as I always say I don't ask for help unless I really can't find a solution. I tried unlocking my bootloader using the HTCDev method, but when I try to flash the unlock code bin file it gets stuck saying its sending and never moves. Same happened weeks back with my HTC Mytouch 4g Slide and I had somehow got it to work after fiddling here and there. I have HTC Sync uninstalled (I even reinstalled it to uninstall it again and keep the drivers) and I even eliminated my PDANet which seems to cause issues in situations like this. Rebooted my computer literally over 10 Times, same bull. I just can't remember how I got it working on my MyTOUCH. SO...I'm on hboot 2.09 and was wondering if these files would downgrade the hboot or something. All drivers seem to be proper, so I don't see why I'm having issues. I'm familiar with the adv and fastboot tools, I even made the android folder on the main harddrive directory that every post recommends , have the unlock_code.bin there but its the issue of not pushing. I have an old PC but if it worked on my MyTOUCH at one point I doubt it has anything to do with it.
So I wanted to know if its possible to downgrade the hboot to use a different method.
The method of rooting the phone is the same regardless of Hboot, so downgrading won't help you. Click the link in my sig and go to the section that contains the bootloader unlocking tools. Click on the WinDroid toolkit and see if you have any luck with that, instead.

Not root, unlocking the bootloader. It says Sending and never does a thing. It should say Okay immediately after pushing the file but its not doing anything for me. Its supposed to quickly give you a disclaimer on your phone to select whether or not to unlock the BL, but all my phone does is sit in fastboot mode. So I wanted to know if these stock restore things can downgrade the HBOOT as well so I can unlock it in a different manner instead of HTCDev's method. I've been stuck with a locked bootloader for a week since purchasing this phone. My MyTouch4g slide had the same issue but I had done something that got it going, in this case, I've tried everything. Also these self made executable programs like WinDroid give me a "not a valid Win32 application" message on my laptop. They just won't run at all.

There is no other method to unlock the bootloader aside from HTC Dev. Doesn't matter what Hboot version you're on or what software version you have. Even programs like regaw_leinad's toolkit uses HTC Dev-it just automates the entire process.

So just trying to prepare myself for when I get my phone back from repair that HTC puts 4.3 on there instead of 4.1.2 since Att release is out now.
My understanding 4.3 comes with hboot 1.55 what are my chances of achieving s off with the rum runner if this happens or any other ways
I know if it gets sent back as 4.1.2 a d hboot 1.44 I'm good.
Just curious as to what I'm in for if they do put 4.3 on there

I'd like to also find out some information regarding this topic. I had my device swapped because I couldn't take the purple camera any longer.. and the replacement had 4.1.2 installed, but when I booted it and during setup, I let the 4.3 OTA come through and installed the update (not even thinking about the hboot version).. So I now am stock 4.3 w/ hboot 1.55 - I'm assuming at the moment that I cannot really do much until we get 1.55 hboot correct? For the fun of it, I tried running the AT&T 1.26.512 RUU but it failed
OP: not hijacking your thread, just didn't want to create a new thread with the same topic..
No sounds like you have the exact problem I could have
In warranty disclaimer it says phone will be loaded with most recent os released for your carrier.
Now that 4.3 is out I'm afraid HTC will just load that on their

You can use moonshine or revone (which I used) with HBOOT 1.44, however with HBOOT 1.54 you need to use rumrunner but it is not the same unlock as with revone because with rumrunner you actually need to unlock the bootloader via HTCDEV.

there is something new with 4.3, they kinda block the adb. when i was on 4.1.2 the adb "fastboot" command working just fine, but once i ran the ruu and update my htc one to 4.3, now when i type adb devices it show me my device but OFFLINE. so it might be a new hidden menu to activate the adb port again "make it read the device" or maybe we need a new driver "which i doubt"....
Well I saw they have the Att firmware on rum runner site 3.17. Whatever the rest is so we should be fine at getting soff I just have not seen someone say they have since Att stock is is hboot 1.55 but ill figure it out when my pphone get back
Hoping its 1.44 hboot and I can downgrade and unlock bootloader without HTC knowing this time but that would be to easy and I'm sure ill have stock 4.3 1.55 we shall see this week !

I've also tried flashing the official RUU to my phone for a completely fresh start, and still have no luck.

I'm having the same thing.
One time it says offline, the other it says connected.
I've ran rumrunner_m7_3.23.666.1 almost 5 times now with the same result. The only difference is that my HBOOT screen says tempered but I still have S-On and I don't think it's getting anywhere. It does the pouring and restarts the phone quite a few times but I'm guessing it's not having any luck. Maybe rumrunner only supports up to HBOOT 1.54 and since we are HBOOT 1.55, it won't work?
Here is how the process has went the 6th time I believe when I ran it:

I may have figured it out.
I had version 3.17.502.3 on AT&T HTC One and I've been running rumrunner for .666 version.
I just downloaded rumrunner_m7_3.17.502.3 and about to give it a shot. Will keep everyone posted. Sorry if I annoyed anyone with my dumb post and mistake :silly:
I never got to the pouring part, but I was also apprehensive about using Rumrunner for a different version. I can't remember where I read it on here, but one of the 2.24 users that did it bricked his phone. Or rather it bricked itself during it's first phone call after s-off. No confirmation if it was due to using a different rumrunner than what he had, but I wouldn't want to be the first guy to try. For that, I thank you.
Interesting how the version you used doesn't have all of those test waiting for fastboot and adb.
Thanks for the kind words and motivation EsJayEs
I'll keep everyone posted. Someone has to be the bait or nobody gets the goodies :good:
So, when I ran the right version, it says:

I'm guessing because I tried wrong version and now my HBOOT says tempered. Maybe I'll relock bootloader and try to run RUU to go back to stock and start over. Aah, I wish I would have never gone to G2 and stayed with my HTC One that I had working and perfectly setup!
I re-locked the bootloader, installed the latest AT&T RUU, unlocked the bootloader, then ran rumrunner_m7_3.17.501.3 which matches my system version and OS version in HBOOT menu but it seems like it's still not working.
Here is the output after running rumrunner:

Still don't have my phone sounds like it could be because hboot 1.55
But I don't get why our Att firmware is on rumrunner site if hboot 1.55 don't work because the 3.17 firmware ones with hboot 1.55 and they make it very clear to be stock.
Man I need my phone back I'm ready to start trying

That's the exact problem I had time and time again.
Double check you have the right rumrunner for your firmware. Im sure you have.
Don't worry about doing the fastboot bit, you know its all connecting fine.
Boot your phone as normal, on to the phones home screen. Open a command prompt in the same folder as yout ADB link.
Type ADB Devices, and it should find your phone, model number and so on. Leave the window open. Then start rumrunner. It worked for me 1st time then.

I'm hoping the wisdom of the XDA crowd can show me the way. My EVO 4G LTE was unrooted, fully stock when I ran the new RUU from Sprint. It got stuck and never completed. It sat overnight, with the sliver HTC logo against a black background. The program stopped responding on my laptop. So, I disconnected. I am able to get into HBOOT screen. I can reach the phone through ADB when connected in Fastboot. I have also been able to load TWRP and CWM, but image files won't take. I cannot get the phone to load past the white screen with the green HTC letters.
I figure that I have no more OS. But, I cannot do anything else because while I have unlocked the bootloader, I still have S-ON. I have HBOOT 2.10 as well.
I cannot mount the storage from the laptop, but I do have an external SD card I can swap in and out.
I know there are ways I can get to a new ROM with HBOOT 2.10, but it seems they all require S-OFF. I can't figure out how to get S-OFF.
At this point I would just like a working phone. Where do I go from here?

To gain s-OFF you'd need to be on 3.16 firmware if you don't want the hassle then redo the RUU a different way which is that link V

Thanks for the link. That kind of worked. The first rom_1.zip that I renamed didn't work...Gave me an error that said "Wrong zipped file!" I tried it with the other file, just to see, and that seemed to work. It was able to parse it and flash it. However, when I rebooted, I am still stuck on the white HTC screen.
Is there any way to downgrade the firmware to 3.16 from fastboot or recovery? I can still access CWM.
Not unless you're S-off, no.

Is there any way to gain S-OFF with HBOOT 2.10 without an OS?
No.
Have you tried running the RUU again from the bootloader, or have you tried flashing a ROM?

I was trying to figure out how to run the RUU from the bootloader, but couldn't figure it out. How can I do that?
Connect via Fastboot USB mode and start the RUU just like you did when you ran it previously.

Yes - I've done that. Putting it into Fastboot USB was the only way my laptop could recognize the phone. I could try to flash a rom, but I wasn't sure which one would work with the HBOOT/firmware version I have.

If your Hboot and firmware match the new layout you can try and flash one of the new Android 4.3 Sense 5 ROM's.
I'll keep looking for one that doesn't require S-OFF. All the ones I've found so far require it.

No luck on that front, but Captain_Throwback came to the rescue and gave me the solution after a plea from help over at the Android Central forums. I had to relock my bootloader, then load on the RUU as a PJ75IMG.img in the root of the SD card.
The file was provided by Captain_Throwback - link is in the post here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...te-coming-htc-evo-4g-lte-132.html#post3475940
Everything is working great now. It does feel like a new phone, to a certain extent - very fast.

Could you find any guide? I need to be able to stock a m9 ...
This is a fairly easy process. BACK UP YOUR STUFF BEFORE YOU READ ANOTHER WORD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Make sure you have ADB w/fastboot set up on your computer. If not, search for 15 second fastboot adb in google and install it. Make sure you have the HTC drivers installed, as well. I usually can't do this unless in install the latest version of HTC Sync for some reason.
Relock your bootloader: Turn off your phone. Hit Volume down, and power until you get to the bootloader screen. Go to download mode by hitting the volume keys and hit power to select. Plug your phone into your computer. In cmd prompt, make sure you have your phone connected by typing adb devices and hit enter. You should see a number, which represents your phone. If so, type in fastboot oem lock to relock your device.
Turn on your phone and make sure you don't have the option in your developer settings enabled to allow bootloader unlocking. If so, turn it off.
Go to the HTC website. Download the latest RUU for your phone. Download it and run it. After this does it's thing, provided you didn't change too much from your phone before like SID/MID, or make your m9 look like the developer version, you should be back to stock in around 15 minutes.

You realize, of course, that you are posting to the USA HTC ONE M9 forum for AT&T, correct? If you want an international base for your phone, read the post I made below and use the correct RUU from the HTC website.

Here is the most reliable way to return the stock to your smartphone https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120731364 For Europe.Important! Initially, the firmware must be installed 4.30.317.12
Okay, I've been pulling my hair out for the last few days trying to figure out what the HELL I have been doing wrong. This whole damn time, I've been trying to use the internal SD storage to manual flash the RUU, to no avail.
I have since found the right RUU version available for download, instead of using the RUU exe and such that HTC has (And failing all the time mind you).
I used this guide: http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-restore-htc-one-m9-to-stock/
And for some ungodly unknown reason EVERYONE AND THEIR FREAKING GRANDMOTHERS keep saying "SDcard"! NO! It HAS to be the EXTERNAL SD card. It makes me wonder if anyone even LOOKS at what file manager programs calls the extsd, It USED to be sdcard... Back on devices that ran versions of android before JELLYBEAN. We're on Marshmallow and higher now, come on, get with the times!
I thought I needed to re-flash the recovery because of a red triangle, but I didn't remember that it does that by default when s-off'd. Access recovery by holding power, and pressing volume up once.
