Hello there !
I have a Nexus 4 with ClockWorkMod and I'm wondering if flashing Ubuntu Touch could possibly wipe my recovery. Also, does it wipes the data contained in /sdcard ?
Some reports have said no, some say yes. I'm checking now, but assume it does until we know otherwise.

it wipes the entire device if you use the instructions Ubuntu provides....as stated in the instructions
there is info right here on xda, on how to do it without wiping everything

where please? we are all flashing through zip via recovery...
Considering the build script checks if the recovery is flashable:
subprocess.check_call('sudo fastboot flash recovery %s' % recovery_file,
shell=True)
I would assume it would flash the recovery partition.

that's without any doubt! I don't have the zip yet, so can you check if something is related to an sd card wipe??
people are reporting TWRP works ok, no recovery nor sd card wipes
The built-in installer DOES flash a new recovery (looks like a stock recovery, or maybe with their own modifications). I'm not sure if it wipes nandroid backups yet, going to check that next.

If people would stop creating new threads every 3 seconds about ubuntu it would be easier to find....but alas, the xda public is too damn impatient
After installing through the "Ubuntu" method, which does flash a new recovery, I reflashed TWRP and checked and it does still keep the nandroid backups, so everything is still there. It's easy to go back to your old backup even after flashing the new recovery. Meaning, their process does not wipe the sdcard.

during my install, it wiped my sdcard. i followed the instructions as provided by canonical. my device was empty
I flashed using the zip files and could simply reboot, holding the volume button down, and get back into TWRP

correct. if you dont flash using canonicals instructions, and only flash the 2 zip files, nothing on your boot or recovery is touched....
thats what i am trying to say here. if you follow the canonical way, it wipes everything, loads its own boot.img and recovery.img, then flashes those zip files.
we dont need their boot or recovery to make this work. if you already have cwm or twrp all you have to do is flash the zip files

I flashed with cwm, was able to make a backup before hand of my android. After flashing the Ubuntu os, I made a backup of it. Was able to restore android from my backup without no problems!! For what its worth, I have both as duelboot. Never lost anything while flashing!!

dual boot you say? You wouldn't happen to have a nexus 4 would you. I've been looking for a dual boot solution with cm10.1 nightlies
I upgraded my [ROM][Jellybean 4.2.2][JDQ39E] ThinkingBridge ROM [I9100] from Stable1 to Stable2 on my S2 i9100
Now I cannot do any backups wit CWM
The error:
CWM-based recovery v6.0.3.2
SD Card space free: 13324MB
Backing up boot image ...
Error while backing up boot image!
If I install a different kernel (e.g. Dorimanx), I can do backups and restores again, but I want to use the stock kernel, because it is smooth and battery friendly.
I had this restore problem the first time when upgrading from Stable1 to Stable2, too. Because of general ROM problems, I thought it was a temporary failure. With the help of a different kernel (see above) i could go back to Stable1 and upgraded again. Then ROM was OK and everything is working great, but the same backup issue rises up again.
Is there anything which can be checked, why the CWM cannot backup the boot image? Or anybody knows what could be wrong?
I heard about TWRP. Maybe this is a alternative tool for my S2 to do backup and recover?
Or somebody use Orange Backup or Online Nandroid ?
Online Nandroid Backup shows the same error
Orange is ment to be good with preload bk up too. Try that one mate
Twrp is nice but need to change kernel. Also int sd is called emmc in twrp. I use dori and hp preload script to back up .
alliance 7.3
dorimanx 8.16

You mean TWRP? You will have to flash a kernel that has TWRP built-in like gustavo kernel or apolo kernel since TWRP doesn't have a standalone zip to flash.

Actually the problem is that my phone is not booting. Its Moto G XT1031. I have flashed Philtz Touch recovery. But I am not able to do even factory reset. While trying to back up boot image it returns the same error as mentioned above.
First of all the details:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 Gt-i9300
Software: Android 4.1.2 Touchwiz
I was trying tot flash a custom ROM (cyanogenmod 10.1) using goomanager. I did everything right but my Phone got stuck in a boot loop. It wants to start the recovery mode( the "loading screen" from twrp pops up), but before it starts, it reboots itself, so i cant get into recovery mode. Does this mean that the open recovery script is corrupt? And is it possible to install cwm instead of twrp?I can get into Odin mode.
Is there anything i can do to restore my phone?
One read the basic faqs and guides before flashing .
Two just restore your Nandroid backup no Nandroid see above .
Three looks like you need to flash either stock rom then recovery or just recovery .
Read the faqs and guides .

I think i never made a twrp backup because it has NEVER booted into recovery succesfully. It just gets stuck at the loading screen from twrp and then it reboots itself and it automaticaly triest boot into recovery again, but then it fails again and reboots itself. This cycle goes on and on. I don' t need to restore my files, i just want to recover my phone so it works again.
EDIT: How can i find my region code without using my phone, so i can get the right samsung software from their site.

Wipe data, flash a rom, whatever. Your aim is to get a booting phone and you'll need a working recovery to do that.

I'm still on stock I'd like to flash one of 4.4.2 ROMs. However, most of them have line in instructions that latest CWM is required. Since CF-Auto-Root does not contain it, I was wondering if anything can go wrong if I use that root method? Should I proceed with any other root method instead?

Hi,
You can use these steps to flash CWM or a recovery of your choice via Odin:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4
In addition, I personally prefer [i93xx][CWM Advanced Edition] PhilZ Touch.
Hope this helps.

ASAP as far the threads here stipulate. I did 2 backups of my EFS the moment i got my SGS3. I was however, only able to accomplish this by first flashing a custom recovery. Once the custom recovery was installed, (I was and still am using Philz Touch) the first thing I did was backup my EFS folder.

Yep like oreo27 said before flashing any custom roms backup your EFS preferably while you are still on your original rom that your phone came with and make a couple of backups and keep copies on computer.
You will also find that some roms have options to backup your EFS before flashing that particular rom you can never have too many backups ...

The ROM I installed (NeatROM S3) included the option to backup EFS during the Aroma install process, and it's ticked by default. I'm not sure if all ROMs are this good at reminding you

Open the app
Grant superuser acces
Select an device (moto e, not moto e 2015)

When the process is finished you can reboot to recovery and flash cyanogenmod 13
This method is totally safe
And you need flash gapps if you want the playstore and other apps of google, use open gapps project

You could have backed it up in external storage. Anyways, you may do factory reset but all your data will be deleted.
Or you may try to free up at least 100 mb by clearing cache and deleting unnecessary data so that you can install flashify and flash twrp from it.

this dont brick the device, the changes are aplied to the recovery partition, doesn`t make changes to boot.img partition or system partition, its 100% safe.
And twrp is best, cwm are abandoned by their comunity and dont are supported by too much roms
sorry for my english
