[Q] Phone says its full, its not! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone keeps saying its full. Its not. Going through my installed apps it just doesn't amount to around 12GB which is what my Z3 starts with.
Checking the properties of the Android folder including data and obb only amounts to 5GB.
There's something not right as I went through and checked folder sizes of everything on internal and give or take a MB here and there, there's nothing else other than the 3.09GB of data. Where is the rest?
Highlighting all files including hidden on Windows also only shows 3.9GB, but the phone thinks 9GB is used!

Internal Storage Inexplicably Full

My internal storage keeps filling up completely and I can't seem to get to the bottom of it. I first noticed the problem about a month ago...so I deleted all my big games, which left me with about 1.8GB of space on internal storage. Since then, I have only installed a couple of small apps and my internal storage in completely full again.... showing 0mb available.
There are no pictures, videos or music files of any kind currently stored on my phone.
Thanks!
Nothing? Google is getting me nowhere... fast I'll keep digging for now.
Download the app "Disk Usage" and run it for whichever storage (internal or external) and it will list everything installed in a graphical version.

Thank you for that. I was easily able to get to the bottom of this using that app. Here are the big offenders on my phone:
\sdcard\Android\Data\com.amazon.venezia\cache = deleted all the files in this directory and it freed up 3.7GB.
Uninstalled google currents and deleted the entire directory \sdcard\Android\Data\com.google.android.apps.currents = free up over 3GB.
I now have over 6GB of free space on my phone after making those two changes. CRAZY!!!!
Also keep an eye on the following folders and make sure you clean them from time to time.
LazyList
LOST.DIR
temp
Also the Download folder grows very quickly if you download many things from the Browser or email.
I have managed to free several gigabytes this way.
Cheers!

Oh wow I wish I had know about this earlier! I just cleared up 5GB of junk I didn't need anymore.

[Q] Memory showing as full but it's not

A number of my apps won't update at the moment because the phone is advising that the memory is full. However, when I go into the storage settings it advises that there's 1.08gb free on the phone an 0.99gb free on the SD card. The odd thing is that at the top under App Storage it advises that 2.78gb of 2.91gb is used, with 'other' taking up 1.83gb and apps only 0.95gb.
Despite much research on the Internet and playing around I can't identify what this other 1.83gb actually relates to and the phone won't let you tap on this part (as you can do with the apps). Viewing the internal and SD storage via the computer advise the same free space as above. I have tried clearing out the caches and using the Make more space without any luck.
It appears that there is some type of temporary file but I just can't find what it is.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks.

that "other" is apps that comes preinstalled, you can't do anything about it unless you are rooted,,& as per your full memory problem, there might be several things causing it, one is if you have used lucky patcher to patch some apps you won't be able to update them unless you remove the odex file created by it..or maybe your memory is actually full, in that case you must transfer some apps to sdcard...

Roughly 2GB of usable storage space? I think something is wrong

I've seen many posts about low internal storage space, but none of the solutions that I have seen seem to work. I've attached two screenshots to try to show the issue.
Basically, even on a fresh install of a ROM, it shows roughly 2gb of free space internally. After what few apps that I use, it shows around 1GB free. I've checked and can't seem to find any CWM backups or anything taking up the extra space. I coudl be looking in the wrong area, but everywhere I have tried turns up nothing. When I use "Disk Usage" it shows that "System Data" is using up about 7GB out of ~9.9GB of internal storage.
Where is the other 6GB that should be showing up in Disk Usage? It shows up under Storage in the Android settings menu, but then it shows a bunch of files in Miscellaneous that I can only assume are the system data files previously mentioned.
It almost seems like the phone is split into two partitions (which from what I understand, is true) but instead of writing the ROM to the system partition, it is instead installing the ROM and running it from what would have been the 9GB or so of usable space that's supposed to be available to users.
Am I missing something obvious here? What could be causing this? As you can see from teh screenshots, the apps, music, pics, etc are hardly taking up any space at all, yet there is very little space available.
Actually, I guess this was my screwup. I thought that I had deleted all of my CWM backups. Turns out I seemed to have missed one that had about 6+GB of files in it. No idea how I missed it the first few times through. But unfortunately, I can't delete posts here at xda. At least I got my space back though!

Flase Memory. HTC One

Hello everyone. I decided to post on here because I had no idea where my device would fit. I am using android 6.0 on my phone. When I go to file manager, it shows that I have 6.44GB free of 7.89GB on internal storage. Even apps like disk usage and storage analyser show I have 6.44GB free. However, when I connect to PC(MTP), It only shows 1.55GB. I can't even copy anything onto the internal memory anymore. It always says 'insufficient storage' or something. I tried looking for the vold.fstab, I couldn't find it. My phone is rooted. All I found is fstab.mt6580. I need help. I want to access my internal storage as well. Thanks.
It's very unlikely that you would have 6.44 GBs of space free on a device that comes with 8. The space set aside for the system and apps and such usually leaves you with anywhere from 4.5-5.5 free out of the box, before you even sign in. I think those disk usage apps are not reading it correctly. 1.5 GB free sounds about right. Not sure why it wouldn't let you add more stuff to it though. Also not sure what you mean by wanting to access your internal memory as that is what shows up when you connect it to the PC.
Since you are on 6.0, you might check to see if your phone supports adoptive storage and get a good SD card.

Question Media storage shrinking my overall available phone storage

I have 256gb on my phone.
Each time I download a file it doubles the overall size on the phone because it is in the downloads folder and also allocated to 'media storage'.
How can I free up this space? It's definitely doubling the same files, I've tested deleting a game's ROM and seen the media storage also go down straight away.
Does this mean I actually have 128gb and not 256gb then?
I have the same problem in my 9RT, 128 Gb. After the extended search I have done on the internet, I have no good news for you.... The conclusion I have come to is that -
1) No, you do have a 256GB storage, but effectively this Media Storage bug is bringing it down.
2) Chinese Mobile makers ignoring this issue since last year and it seems there is no way they are going to solve this. Also, many of the mobile owners with 256GB never use that much space, so may be they will not even notice the difference ever.
3) Some experienced/old user say that it is a sort of 'virtual' problem, that the Phone is mistakenly calculating the space twice and it is just a number. But, it is not. I have firsthand experience that when the space reaches its top limit ( in my case it went up to around 110-115 GB with over 50GB 'Media Storage", Play Store will not let you install any big size app/games
4) The only solution is to ditch android and go for an iPhone which my broke ass can't do now..... I first noticed this in Android 11 and now even with Android 12 the Bug continues. I have no hope that One Plus (in effect, Oppo, Realme etc etc) will ever solve it even with Android 13...
Sorry for the bad news, but I am really down now and have no hope of it ever getting solved! Do let me know please, if you ever get any reply from Realme Support though!

Media storage counts up whatever stuff you put in the /storage/emulated/0, that is not associated with any category like DCIM/Download/Music etc.
Your screenshot shows 78GB in media storage, and the custom "Game rom" folder is around that. You didn't say what the game rom files are. My guess is that installing these games allocates game files in other directory while source file remains intact so it appears that there is double space used. Game installers often have APK and OBB, where the OBB is the data file for the game, and APK is the game launcher installer.
You should use some app like DiskUsage/SDMaid etc. that shows a breakdown of file structure and what occupies space.
Hey thanks for your reply, to clarify I use dolphin and aethersx to emulate GameCube and PS2 games. Should I put those iso files into another folder to fix the issue maybe?

These emulators read right off the ROM iso files. In any case, I dont think there is an issue. Go to "About Device" -> Storage. I am pretty sure you will see the ROMs counted up under "Other" category.
But again, you said that

I think your statement is wrong, because the Download folder is 4GB.
My other section takes up just 19gb but my ROMS folder is almost 80gb. Just to test if the media storage was referring to my ROMS I deleted a random game (Mario kart) and found the extract size was then missing in media storage straight after. So is there another folder perhaps I should be putting these files into? Maybe /android/data perhaps? Would make any changes?

Media storage isn't a location, it is a system service that returns size of all user data including the game ROMS.
It does not duplicate the data.
Do the below and send screenshot. The external storage analyzer apps may be miscalculating the actual space used by counting up the "Media storage" as an app.

On my phone the storage counts up correctly.

Numbers seem to check out. In the first post the App count is 78gb in Media Storage (Game ROMs folder and others) and close to 40gb in other games + Spotify, that's already 120gb, plus whatever other apps you have.
In this screenshot it shows 133gb in apps.
