[Q] Galaxy S3 INCREDIBLY SLOW CHARGE! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
So I have a Galaxy S3 which has been running perfectly fine on 4.3 however recently the phone has stopped charging properly. It takes me a whole day JUST to get to 75% !!!! I thought it was the battery at first because it had small black marks on it so I replaced that but still the same!
Then I thought okay maybe its a software glitch, I have upgraded to 4.4 which hasnt helped. Then I downgraded to 4.1.2 which also does not help.. I am stuck at the edge where I feel like throwing this phone in the bin!
I have already tried several charges e.g. the galaxy s4 charger (which is meant to charge the phone REALLY fast but still really slow!).. I have tried a SONY Xperia Z1 charger which is slow as well.. Then there comes the ****ty charger which came with the galaxy s3 which is extremely slow itself. I now know the problem is not the charger, battery or the software so wth can it be? -_-
Thanks.

Micro Usb port on the phone. When you plug the charger, what does it say in battery settings? Usb or Ac charging? Solution is repair shop or like me,custom kernel and increase charging current for usb charging from 460(standard rate) to 1100.

Hi,
First of all, thank you very much for your reply.
Ignore the second reply if you received that. I have now installed a custom kernel, the custom kernel I installed is the Boeffla Kernel. I have changed the charging rate for AC charge current to 1600 from 1100 and I have changed the USB Charge current from 475 to 1100. Are these settings fine? (AC Charge current is on max settings now).. When checking in the application "Battery Monitor Widget" I see difference from minus numbers to positive numbers so maybe time will tell the difference.. I am now getting a similar problem where, while I have the cable connected to the S3 and the other side to the computer or to the wall plug, There are times when it says "DISCHARGING" instead of whatever it is meant to say.. How can I sort this out?
Thanks.

But 1100 was the default setting on mine for AC and if I changed it to 1300 would it not barely make a difference at all? Its working great at 1600 at the moment to be honest.. No problems so far and the speed has made a massive difference now!
Thank you for this

Yes but you are killing your battery slowly. Default for Ac should be 1000.
It would make a difference,it's 30% more and that is high procentage for everything. Your phone, your battery and if you are happy,I am happy:thumbup:

I will put it down to 1300 to be on the safe side. Theres another issue I dont understand.. At times the charger is plugged in to the phone but if I move it a little it would stop charging?
1 difference I have found is that if the charger is connected to the computer and then to the phone, so USB charging, it charges fine, like I dont have to move the cable around.. but if the charger is connected to the wall plug, I would have to move it around to get it to charge?
Confused :LL I know the wall plug is fine because my other phone charges properly with it without moving it?

I dont think it's the wall socket that is at fault
More likely it's usb cable. Try another one, maybe you loose contact on the usb,not micro usb side.

Phone dying even while charging?

Lately I began doing some gaming on my GS2 and this has happended to me twice now. one time while playing tiny tower and once on dungeon hunter. I will play with the phone plugged into my pc charging and the battery eventually drains. Is it possible that the games are actually using more juice than it's recharging? I'm currently running latest Unamed Rom.
More that the pc can't charge it quick enough. Wall chargers put out roughly twice the power of a pc usb port.

Its more like 50% more, since the charging for usb is ~440mA, and wall socket is 650mA. Also even at 650mA, at overclocked loads, the battery will still drain...
Damn. Thanks guys! I just ordered a few more batteries and wall charger.
I remember when I had my Captivate playing and recharging at the same time would make the back scorching hot. I bet this phone could do the same so I stray away from doing anything while charging it.
i noticed the same thing while charging via usb and using the phone at the same time. the phone will show that its charging and yet the battery is still dying. I chalked that up to the USB charger not having enough juice to charge it while in use.
as soon as I stop using it, the battery charges fine

Id say its dependant on kernel/rom as well. Im running unnamed and entropy's latest DD kernel (i believe its the kernel that dictates chg rates tho). I get a charge rate of about 1100 mah on pc USB and about 1800 on a wall charger.

Not possible. It's been proven that the charging is limited by the hardware. Anyways USB has a max current of 500mA and the wall charger has a max current of 700mA...

Hi Jo,
Your AT&T unit should have already been bundled with an AC charger no? In your *excitement* over the new phone you may have neglected the WALL charger and it may very well still be in the original Oragne/White AT&T box...

I use this...USB Wall Plug....For $1.90 and free shipping, it works Great!!!! 1000mA output too.
Then all you need is a cable...Charging and Data Cable....for $1.80 with free shipping too.
FYI: Don't be shocked if the shipping takes a couple weeks. I don't complain though for those prices.

[Q] How to solve battery discharging while car navigation?

Always when I'm using my S3 with Navigon, it discharges when connected with car charger.
I am using an original car charger by Samsung. Rom is in signature. Temp when navigating is around 48°C.
All of these things just let the discharging cycle last longer, but it is not gone. I know the problem from S2, but nothing helps on my S3. The problem just exists with Navigon.
What I tried:
- different charger
- set CPU freq to max 500 MHz when navigating
- Display brightness to min when navigating
- Set AC in Extweaks from 1000 to 1200 for testing purposes
Any suggestions from experts?

I actually have the same issue on both my GS3 and Galaxy Nexus. The problem here is that the car charger is not able to provide charge to the phone at the rate at which it discharges. So it will keep discharging unless you get a charger which can charge at a faster rate (higher the Amp, the faster it will charge).

I am having the same problem and I just talked to a buddy of mine (who is an electrician) and he told me that the charger needs to be the exact same volts(not amps) as what the phone/battery needs. If the charger puts out more or even less it could harm the battery and even the phone itself. If I got this right my old charger was working at 500mah I think the s3 is supposed to charge at 1A.(if I'm understanding all this right) I was trying to use my old charger with my new s3 because they both use micro usb and I thought it would work. Well, it does charge the phone but doesn't charge at the rate required thus my phone is discharging faster than it is charging. I hope this helps and sorry if I forgot anything. Btw he has been an electrician for well over 20years. (I want to add I tried to repeat everything like he told me because I personally don't know much on this subject) helpfully someone else can explain it better. Good luck

I would have to agree with circuit89, you need a charger with higher Amps. All usb chargers provide 5 volts. as that is the sub standard, but a standard usb port on the computer is only 500mA, i think the standard charger that comes with the s3 provides 1A, and I think that is the minimum that you need to be able to charge while using gps etc.
A charger with a higher current will no damage the device, it just means it can provide up to that current, so it will provide up to as much as the phone can accept, or it's maximum output.
in short you need a car charger which provides a higher current to charge it faster so it will charge faster than the phone is discharging.

if you can pre-cache maps with that app then that would probably help, that is seriously high battery drain, might even be linked to Google maps running in the background, if you are rooted try and freeze maps with titanium before your next journey and see if it helps

I liked the article. I think it explained it well. The info I got from my buddy was very technical and was probably way more info than I needed but this does bring up another question. What is the highest mah I can use with my s3. I read somewhere on here that it will only change as fast as the phone will allow.

So if I understand this right your phone should be charging twice as fast( if it using the hole 2.1A) compared to the 1A charger that came with the phone right? Have you checked to see how long it takes to fully charge? I was thinking about buying a 2.1A charger.

I have UV with -100mV on all frequency steps. Perhaps I have to say that I'm using the ORIGINAL Samsung S3 car charger with an output of 1A. Also the hint with freezing apps does not work, already tried that one. Because everything I read did not help, I asked the question here
When I want to believe BatteryMonitor, I am connected to AC charge with 1000mA, not USB. When looking on the consumption in BatteryMonitor when not connected and running Navigon, 1000mA should be highly enough.
Weird...

Check your AC adapter, especially if you're using the travel adapter. If the connection is loose, it will think you're charging with USB. Go to your phone settings and make sure it says "Charging (AC)" and not "Charging (USB)"....unless you ARE charging with USB, then it's supposed to be slow...iono about 6 hours though...

Are you charging from computer or the power point. Are you using the charger you got with your phone?
I had the same problem with my phone. Turned out it was the USB cable. Got it replaced from Samsung. You might want to check a different USB cable or a different charger. If you are trying a different charger do make sure the output matches with the stock charger. Also have you tried resetting it back to factory default?

Battery charging incredibly slowly even after switching cables
I got the notification to update my I9300 to Jelly Bean yesterday and went ahead with it. The battery lasted an okay enough time, but I left it plugged in using the stock wall charger overnight. After almost 11 hours, it has only gone from 10% to 75% and I've seen it drop a couple of times while I've gone through the settings. Switching to another charger doesn't seem to make a difference and using the CurrentWidget app shows about 999mA all the time. I haven't rooted it or anything, so it has been difficult to find threads with the exact same issue. Is anyone else experiencing something similar? Thanks!

hi there i just got the same problem as you are getting right now im observing my gs3 and found the charging is very slow 1% evry 30mintues and that the condition is the brightness is low wifi and 3g is off i notice this happen just this morning after 24 hour of chargin using the AC charger from the galaxy s2. right now im using usb cable plugin to the wall out let and also tried plug it in to usb port still having slow charging issue my s3 is JB updated and that it is not rooted, before all this issue happen i was using the same usb cable tha im using bow 2days ago and i have no issue i could watch movie while plugin to the usb port or the wall outlet and im still around 94 to 97% charge with full brightness on and wifi and 3g is on, im in singapore and the outlet here is 220v. ill try to check if might be thusb cable is the issue r not.
my problem is the cable. i used my old samsung phone's charger and it worked!
Same here..
Same problem here, the i9300 charged almost nothing through the night. It recognised the charger as AC. After I woke up, I just took the cable out and reinserted it, then it charged way faster the short while before I went to work. I read somewhere that phones with jelly bean installed OTA over gingerbread could have this problem? I can't really say if it's the charger, the cable or the phone that is the culprit. I have previously had a problem with getting the phone to accept my car charger as well..
The cable you use makes a huge difference.
Best to use the original cable, using an old Nokia cable also works fine.
Be ware of 3rd party cables that for some reason dont deliver sufficient juice to the phone and then it charges very slow....
I guess I should add that I used the original cable and charger. I'll come back with a post if I experience more problems.

The Fast Charge mode on the KT kernel has no impact on AC charge rate, it only affects USB charge rate:
Normally, when you connect to a PC, you get about a 500ma charge rate and the ability to pass data along. When 'Fast Charge' is set, you lose the ability to transfer data, but the 500ma restriction goes away. In practical terms, it means that you should see between 700ma and 900ma as a result.
w/respect to the OP, my experience is weird. When the device was new, I got around 1800ma on stock charger and cable; now, same setup gets me 900-1200 if lucky (even with new battery). When I tried the stock charger with a different (newer) cable, I get around 1600. It's strange that a cable's ability to carry a charge would degrade so quickly (if that's in fact what's happening).
I have no proof, but absolutely believe that kernel can influence max charge rate, because in the past, I've observed max charge rate drop with the release of a new kernel version, then go up again with another release.
Samsung did slow the charging rate in one of the OTAs. People had been complaining about the phones getting too hot.

I have used the galaxy charging app myself. In my opinion, CurrentWidget is better...looks cooler too. Ha.
So other than software related issues, you need to remember that the speed in which your phone charges is highly dependent on the hardware of 3 things:
1) Power Outlet (including power strips, extension cords, USB extenders, etc.)
2) Power Adapter (I highly recommend Anker's products!!!)
3) MicroUSB Charger Cable (if not using the factory Samsung cable or an Anker one, be sure that it's an 11-pin microUSB, and NOT a 5-pin...they look the same!)
Power Outlets - I know for me, if I use the outlet in my livingroom, it takes SO much longer for my phone to charge than it does in my bedroom. Just try this test! Grab that CurrentWidget app from above and try out some different outlets throughout your house, just to see whether or not the voltage varies. I bet you'll see that this is true!
Power Adapter - You should be using either the factory Samsung charger or a reputable 3rd party charger with the equivalent specifications (5V & 2.1A). However, I actually prefer my Anker charger over my Samsung one! If you're finding that you can't get a good charge, try swapping out your adapter with another one.
MicroUSB Charger Cable - As stated with the power adapter, you should also try to stick with your factory cable if possible. HOWEVER, I have found that to daily connecting and disconnecting of the cable with your phone, they probably receive the most wear and tear of anything else, and therefore may need replacement after some time. Again here, I find that using either my Anker cable or Samsung cable will give me the best charge. This is determined by both the CurrentWidget app and the amount of time it actually takes to get a full charge! Keep in mind that using USB extender cables can drastically lower the voltage to your phone - thus causing a very slow charge.
So basically, I know if I need to charge my phone as quickly as possible, I know I should clear my RAM and recent apps, put my phone on airplain mode, and using my Anker charger, I plug-in at the outlet near my closet door! I figured this all out by using these same ideas I just shared with you! Hope this is helpful!
If you can tell the difference between outlets, you need to call an electrician. Not kidding.

I doubt that's entirely true. I mean, think of if they're on different circuits, that kind of thing can vary...also, depending on what you have plugged into your outlets can cause lower outputs I'd assume. I'd bet if you used the app I referred to and ran a test at each of your outlets, and reported back here (being honest of course), that you'd see some differences. Anyways, that was far from the point of the post. But thanks for the insight!

The Samsung power supply is rated for 100 to 240 V @ 0.5 A input. It may be that the power supply is kind of crappy, and varies its output under small variations in input voltage, which is why you see what you see. It really shouldn't...but it wouldn't shock me if it did given that its made for $2 in China. Makes you wonder what would happen if you plugged it into a 240V source. When my wife went to Malaysia last summer to visit her folks, I just put a US to British transformer-less adapter on her Motorola brick and it worked OK plugged into 240V. Maybe the Samsung ones are crappier?
I squared R losses should be reasonably low in household wiring. NEC is 5% drop max at the outlet. And that is like the outlet the farthest from your mains under full rated load. Assuming you live somewhere typical, your voltage at the panel will be 120V+; a lot of time its a few volts over 120. If you have an outlet that is not tripping a breaker go below 100V, you have a problem somewhere. A 20% drop is not normal. Have you put a meter on the outlets with low charge rates?
My friend's OEM s4 charger charges at 1900 ma while my OEM charger only charges at max 1200... Weird how that happens but somehow the cable just stops charging as fast.

Insanely Slowing Charging when connected to Computer USB Port?

For the few days I've had my G5 I've noticed that this phone charges extremely slow when connected to a computers USB Port. Now I'm not stupid, and I realize that USB ports don't draw that much power at all. The reason Im concerned is that my old G2 on the exact same PC USB port probably charges almost twice as fast at least. Anyone know what might be going on? The cable should be fine, I'm using this: http://www.amazon.com/Cable-TechMatte-USB-C-Nexus-Black/dp/B01706YAXY . Thanks in advance.
Mine charged super slowly on USB as well, using the stock charger. I hadn't yet plugged it into the wall so I wasn't "used to" faster charging yet. That said I'd have to do a side-by-side with my G3 to really see.

You mean the stock cable? This is just a problem with the pc usb port. Wall charging is fine.

I mean the stock cable using a usb port on my macbook pro, yeah—same issue as yours, no?

Yea was just a bit confused since you said stock "charger". Don't know why this is happening.
A quick google didn't reveal anything about QC 2.0 charging slower on computers than regular chargers. Since you have the stock cable too, have you compared those two to see if your amazon cable is the culprit?

Can you download the app Ampre and tell me what the charge rate is? mine is fluctuating between 50mA to 740mA while plugged in to a SS (SuperSpeed) USB and max of 200mA while plugged into a regular USB. This a very good app to determine the quality of a wall charger. It will give you the Max USB current that the phone detects. I'm using original cord with phone.

Seems weird. Getting anywhere between 10mA and 210mA with a Max USB Current of 500mA.

I don't think its that wired if your plugged into a regular usb and not the superspeed USB.

When I get home Ill Ampere my other phone too. And see what the difference is.
There probably isn't a problem at all. The reason it seems your G2 charged faster is because it's battery is smaller than the one in your G5.

But it's not. The G2 had a 3000maH battery. The G5 has a 2800.

Wow....seriously? That's odd.
I charged mine for a bit today off a MacBook Pro (retina) and of course, it was slower than the wall charger and reported as charging "slowly" but the % it was increasing by was as I would expect and similar to that of the Nexus 5X. This was with the screen off. Did you have your screen on at all while charging? One thing I noticed with the 5X was that if you're using the phone or just have the screen on then the mA that the phone pulls from a computer USB massively dropped for some reason.
I guess the screen was on for some of the time. But there were whole hours where it wasn't. It think it was probably on plugged into the computer for like 3 hours, and got maybe 15% tops.
I used Ampere to check this against my G2 at home. Both were pulling the same amount, somewhere around 150-200 on average. Don't know, maybe its all in my head, but 3Hrs for 15% seems super slow even for a pc usb 2.0 port.
Yes that is normal
USB tops out at 500mah while 3.0 USB tops pit at 800mah I think
Could it be a false positive? You know that some devices report different charges... My old device had 100% show until it hit 95, then after it would stabilize. Charging could be the same. A lot of devices report charges at different rates at different parts of the battery... Regardless, usb charging has always been slow. It also depends if it's purely charging or also allowed to connect and sync. Then there is a difference as well... Many many factors to look into, honestly.

Most laptops will only out out 0.5a per pair of ports. Desktop can put out more of course. Compare that to your included charger with 1.8a, or a normal 1a charger, big difference. And if you have the phone awake, it pretty much isn't going to go up lol

For what it's worth my s7e charges very slow via usb to computer.
