Virgin Mobile (US) Returning to Stock Help! - HTC Desire 601

Hello,
I have a Virgin Moblie version of the Desire 601, which I believe is Zara_CL. The phone is still on stock 4.2.2 but it is rooted. I've tried to get s-off but I always run into errors and I've given up on it (unless absolutely necessary).
The phone has gotten very sluggish and I want to wipe it out, preferribly with an RUU. I've found this Google Drive on this forum:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KuME12ai1OVHVqd3M&usp=sharing#list
and I've downloaded the JB422 RUU. Will this reset my phone to stock even though I'm rooted? Also, could I just use the K44 RUU instead and upgrade to Kitkat, or do I need to go back to stock 4.2.2 and upgrade via the OTA?
Thanks!

A kitkat RUU for US zara_cl was just released.

PS. Getting s-off was a pain in the butt for me as well. Anything thay interferes with the network will cause it to fail; antivirus, firewall (pc or router), parental controls. Check this main thread below as it has lots of help. Check posts from me or directed at me as I posted a lot here about my issues. I formatted my hard drive. In the end it was likely a parental control application I use to block porn on my laptop.

You can use either RUU. The newer one will upgrade you to KK, the other one will return you to stock JB like when you purchased the phone.
There's two things to note though ...
1) S-OFF will likely be easier to get on JB than it will on KK
2) Once you upgrade to KK you will NOT be able to use the JB RUU unless you are S-OFF (as you will need to downgrade your hboot to use it)
Also, you can try taking a look at this thread if haven't already to see if it helps with getting S-OFF.

Thank you both for the information!
Is there any reason not to do the KK upgrade? Does it run smoother or slower? Is root easy to obtain in KK?
I've heard there are some tighter restrictions on writing to the SD card with KK, is this easily bypassable?
I don't really care about S-OFF any more, as I don't plan on doing any ROMing.
Thanks!

No issues with KitKat and rooting is easy. Just install TWRP and then boot into it and reboot and it will tell you that it didn't find root and offer to install it for you. The current version bundled with TWRP is 2.40 and runs fine, but there is also a newer version or SuperSU, version 2.45, which you can use if you prefer and can be downloaded as a flashable zip from here.
A couple things to note though:
You will need to get a new unlock token from HTC as your hboot will be newer and the old token will not work with it (you'll need to lock the bootloader for the RUU to successfully run).
When you unlock, there's a few apps that will be removed because HTC decided to put them on the data partition which gets wiped when you unlock the bootloader.
The only stock app really that gets removed is the calculator. You can still setup and use the calculator widget, but no direct access to the app.
One benefit to S-OFF before upgrading to KK is that you can then unlock the bootloader without using htcdev and not have data get wiped.
On stock KitKat, yes, there is a setting that limits how apps are able to access the sdcard. Once you have root, install this app from the Play store and it will fix it for you.

Hmmm, I'm getting "Fastboot has stopped working" when I try to run the KK RUU. Luckily, it's still leaving my phone in a workable condition.
I'm gong to attempt the JB RUU then do the OTA if possible.
edit:
No luck with the JB RUU either. I think I'm going to give up for now and just stick with my slow phone.

Fixed! (So far)
I got back to trying to RUU again since my phone had gotten even more deathly slow.
Another thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-601/help/easiest-to-return-phone-to-stock-to-t2859051
said that you had to relock your bootloader before doing the RUU. Seems to have fixed it for me. I was able to run the Jellybean RUU without issue. I just wanted to post the fix for me in case others where having the same problem.
As Child's Play said in that other post:
Get into fastboot and type fastboot oem lock

2- OTA_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5-2.08.651.3_release_2353522hivy65lggcg2tmb.zip
How to update?
or
Do I need them?
PS. How to turn the S-on to S-off
I was reading on one of the posts.."Is it possible to get s-off, root, recovery - keep the stock ROM and still take OTA updates?".......
This question is in relation to the s-off or S-on.
thanks for your patients.
It all depends on if you are rooted or not, and if you plan to root in the future.
The updates are not "needed", you phone will run just fine without them.
If you are rooted, NEVER take an OTA update. Download the stock rooted rom with that version, and flash it.
If you are unrooted, you can just take the update by going to settings-system updates-software update. However, if you want to root, do it before updating, as updating could screw you with the locked hboot.

Ok I am rooted, some one did for me, the S-on/ Hboot -1.5
I keep getting the updates via OTA, and others, even if I update does nothing.
You mention the .."stock root rom" not sure how to make that move, I appreciated your suggestions.

That's because you can't and shouldn't take OTA updates when you are rooted. Every single root guide tells you this.

Find the latest stock rom in the Development section, and flash it just like any other rom.
In order to take the update, you would have to re-lock your phone, since your friend rooted yours using the HTC unlocking method. If you re-lock your phone, you can get the updates, but would have to go through the rooting process again. In some cases, I've read, it doesn't work.
If you want the updates, then search the Dev threads for a stock version of the newest update and flash it to your phone, if you are wanting them. Otherwise, I'd leave well-enough alone, if not having problems with your phone.

No I not sure about the updates! I was thinking that one of those updates was to remove the 'Carrier IQ'.
So I like the my phone is rooted, but I like to remove the Carrier IQ also.
Another reason why did the rooted is 'free wife' that gives me, that is the only web we have.
If any other suggestions please send it my way all are welcome.

Pretty sure rooting does not give you a free wife. Also, you have hboot 1.5 so you cannot have s-off. Also, many of the ROMs available for you to flash have carrier IQ removed already. One mo gain, Never update your phone if its rooted.

Noob questions about getting my EVO3D ready for a custom rom

I tried looking around, but a lot of the posts were from mid/late 2011 about this.
Currently my EVO 3D is still on stock Gingerbread.
I tried to lookup a stock ICS rom, but almost all of them are custom roms based on the stock rom. Basically, ATM all I want to do is upgrade to a rooted version of the sprint ICS rom, not install a completely custom rom. Also, I have heard that with the official rom you can upgrade without losing any information. Is it possible to do that with ANY of the custom roms or would they all require me to backup my data because it will have to reformat my phone? ATM I am not looking for a custom rom and really, just want to be able to upgrade to the stock ICS while still having root purely so I can delete all those annoying preinstalled apps.
Will backing up data from a gingerbread rom and then restoring it to a ICS rom cause any problems?
And I have no idea how to go about doing it, I know I should at first use the temp root just to backup my information.... but I am lost on the whole S-OFF and flashing from past that point thing.

Virus has a thread with the stock rooted rom in the development form. As for restoring apps, you shouldn't have a problem, if you do clear caches and reboot

So, he mentioned I won't loose root if I am dev unlocked? What about if I use a 3rd party unlock method? I remember reading that HTC's unlock method still leaves some aspects unlocked while the 3rd party methods can fully unlock the device.
And can anyone help me with the other questions I asked?

The HTC method will leave you with unlocked, s-on. That is what some folks seem to to refer to as the partially still locked issue.
I would just use the HTC method, and then use the wire trick method to get s-off. Then you are unlocked and have control of what ever you want to do.
When it comes to the roms, you need to do a little research and make sure you have compatible components. If you upgrade to the latest H-boot, then certain roms will no longer run. Personally I am running the cool rom as of last night, but have been on mean rom for the last couple of weeks. I have been using the "other kernel" with hboot 1.58 and things have been pretty good.
The meanrom 2.6 is a good choice for you in my opinion as it will give you root access with as close to stock as you can get. It has the kernel and new hboot instructions in it also so I would consider it a good fit for what you are looking for. I do not believe you can overclock the kernel it comes with, but you did not request that.
As to backing up your data. Everyone will have their preferred program or method. I have purchased the rom tool box pro edition from market, I use it to back up apps and data. Regardless of what you use, be careful when restoring the backups. I restore data like wifi, messages, contacts. I do not restore the system data, especially if I am changing between roms as it is much easier to type in a little data than to figure out why the thing is unstable.
It just takes a bit of research, but all the information you need is available.
Have a good weekend.

But dosen't the HTC method force me to reformat my memory, thus requiring me to do the temporary root so I can run titanium backup before doing it?
On a related note, I am not sure just how I would restore my apps actually. I mean, the first thing my phone would ask me to do is to sign into my Gmail account, and when I do that, it will automatically attempt to re-download all of my apps wouldn't it? (And fail spectacularly since I don't have enough space, nearly all of my apps are on my SD card and my internal memory is still full, lousy preinstalled bloatware that you cannot remove...)

Cyber Akuma (is that a reference to "D.Gray.Man?)
Shameless self promoting here but, for some background info have a look at:
[Guide]My Hboot 1.5x HTC Unlock/recovery/rom/kernel flashing notes
Evo3d(CDMA)HBoot/S-off Differences & Rooting Background Info
I've been using MeanRom ICS since it came out. Very solid, very similar to stock, smooth, reliable, fast, but all the extras. S-Off is strongly recommended b/c HTC Unlocked (S-on) users are hit or miss on being able to install ICS Roms. If you are still on Hboot 1.50 you can get s-off by downgrading Hboot to 1.40 or the Jbear wire Trick. If you take the official ICS update Jbear is your only option at the moment.
You may be able to use EsFileExplorer to back up your user apps w/o rooting, but an option to consider is to HTC Unlock, install a recovery, flash SuperUser and have a full rooted stock (S-On) phone that you can backup with Ti Backup or the custom recovery (don't think you will lose anything in the process).
With HTC Unlock, you wont be able to update to ICS while rooted, you'd have to relock and flash the full RUU (erasing the phone) and unlock/root again.
Upgrading to ICS, you should be able to restore your user apps, but system settings/google accounts (especially GB backups) etc will cause issues so you will most likely need to just bite the bullet and plan on re-entering things the first time through. FYI, Virus's update thread only works for S-off users.
Wait, if I do S-OFF and then use an official rom, would I be stuck with S-ON again?

Once s-Off, always s-Off. (unless u send the command via fastboot)
S-Off trumps unlocked bootloader (htc unlocked)
Running a full stock Ruu will not reset to S-on

[Q] How do i convert an at&t One from Developer's Edition back to at&t stock

Hi all,
I was hoping for a little help. I got my phone last summer on At&t and immediately converted the Developer's Edition. The phone is currently rooted,
has s-off and is on a KitKat Rom.
The above said, would I be able to get back to stock? I've Googled it and can only find instructions on Stock to Developer's, not the other way around.
TIA

Thank you! All though I have email notification set up for replies, I never received one. Interesting is that my CID remains the At&t and i currently have s-off. When I RUU.exe (I downloaded the same the other night), I get an error and it restarts my phone. I'm wondering if it's because I have a KitKat Rom already installed and the software number is slightly higher than the RUU? The software number is 4.18.502.7 (my phone). I think the RUU is 502.1.

I tried as you have suggested your decrypted file. Unfortunately, I get an error when trying to run it via ADB in fastboot.
I've rooted when I first got the phone last summer using Revone method/tool. All worked fine and i had continued updating the OS a few times with stock rooted phones.
The last that i updated to was a stock rooted odex kitkat ROM found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2676986
Only thing that seemed wrong was that I couldn't reinstall any of my apps requiring root. The error that would pop up is "Could not install to SD card".
Now, I have to say that I noticed that with some updates, it seems that new ROMS don't clean up the old files/framework even after fully wipes. It seems to back it up in some folders (sdcard0, sdcard00, sdcard000 etc). All though the sdcard folder seems clean and refreshed, the others mentioned had all my old files in there. Since I've updated to kitkat, I can no longer view these folders (I used to use Root Explorer, but now since the kitkat install - I can't). What caused me to notice was the fact that my storage, in the 'Other:' section, shows 20GB out of 32. So, I used ES File Mgr to see if I can create some space by deleting the so-called backup folders. I think that was a bad mistake because now, even after a full data wipe, I still can't:
* Install root-required apps
* flash the zip file you provided
* use the exe version of the zip you provided (still get an error with that as well)
* Clear the 20gb of data I don't need
* get back to the At&t carrier brand from the Developer's Edition that i switched it to back last summer.
Fortunately the phone works fine, but is this hopeless? Anything I can do to get this going again (really thing I messed things up)
Is there anything else I can try?
thank you,
infg3570

Wipe data, cache, dalvik, put the appropriate ROM for your carrier/build on SD card or root of internal storage and flash. All else fails run an RUU, bring you back to 100% stock then you can properly reinstall the custom recovery of your choice.

SkyDragon M8 Sense Rom installs but doesn't boot (tried 2 versions of this rom 700mb and a 1.6gb), believe i tried a couple other roms in my phones section there's only like 9 of them there. I have the stock RUU but fails to detect the phone and fails i think it's meant to sense a turned on functional phone i don't see any kind of recovery method with the stock ruu. All i want is a rom to work with Straight talk the stock os even being unlocked and rooted with su still shoved the default APN down my throat(I even paid 2.99$ for the SQLlite and deleted all other APNs still won't let me check off a APN profile i created as default) making my signal on ST flakey and couldn't get mms to work just picture txting wasn't working. So i went full on like my old HTC One X but dived head first too fast didn't backup my old OS and didn't know firewater was gone till i was at that step of the procedure and it was too late Oh and using TWRP 2.7.1.0 it's the highest i can use before it won't boot.

Boot into fastboot, check device manager (if youre on windows) for any unknown drivers and install them if you can. Then run the RUU I posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/help/100-stock-4-4-4-ruu-t3017594 which would update you to 4.4.4.

Ok TY i'll try that soon as it downloads, i did finally get RUU_M8_UL_K44_SENSE60_ATT_SECURITY_Cingular_US_1.58.502.1_Radio_1.16.21331931.LA11G_20.31A.4145.02L_release_368350_signed_2
To see the phone and no progress bar shows up on the phone and the program errors out, i even did a full system wipe before i tried it again still to no avail.

So new problem probably a thread somewhere on here about it i'll take a look, thank you for the help

You'll have to setup your APN and mms message size settings for straight talk, that should fix the text messaging problems.

No matter what message app i try i can't send pictures or large txts my mms is borked and to make matters worse when i installed this rom i must of removed the stock HTC messaging app so i can't find any settings to set the mms size limits. I'd like to figure out how to put the stock messaging app back on the phone without redoing the whole OS
Using Handcent and hangouts and i see no size limit options within the apps or anywhere in the phone settings. Looked up my phone specifically and where the option/s is supposed to be the said section of options is not even there.
If you've got a stock rom downloaded to your computer or sd card you can unzip it and look in system app folder and find the htc messaging apks. Then just install them as system apps and fix permissions.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
Before i try and fix my obvious other problems does anyone know how to fix a bad flash of TWRP? I'm used to just adb command line flashing it and never had a issue before on my HTC One X, but seems it a was bad idea and it landed on boot partition and is causing glitches. is there a stock boot i can flash or what do i need?

Why do you think that partition, in particular? If you are talking about boot.img, that gets re-flashed any time your flash a ROM.
Try fastboot erase cache, and flash recovery by fastboot. If Clockwork doesn't work, try TWRP.
If you indeed have some corrupted partition(s), your best bet is to RUU. You are non-specific about what error codes, so its hard to help you troubleshoot why the RUU failed. Try a more updated RUU, such as 2.23.

Error 155 Unknown Error it says, do i need to relock the bootloader? I could never find a way to S-Off the device so idk if its that or corrupted partition like you said but all my services on my phone crash constantly. But that's better then aokp_task650_m8_kitkat_5.13.2014 that one won't even make it through setup the services crash so often the badseed rom is the only other rom i found that is actually usable. Oh my RUU is 2.0.16 how can i find the newest one for my HTC One M8?

You always need to relock the bootloader to run RUU with s-on. No exceptions.
Hopefully this will clear up your RUU problem, although the RUU number you just supplied above doesn't make any sense (doesn't correspond to any RUU for this device) Where did you find it, and its not what you referenced in Post #5 above.
CavyS already supplied a link for the "latest" AT&T RUU in Post #4 above. Although be aware, that if you are successful in running the latest RUU, it will render sunshine unable to achieve s-off. I suggest RUU to 1.58 or 2.23 (if you want s-off), as those should still be supported by sunshine.

Did you try sunshine? Its the only way to s-off at this time.

Relocked and flashed the ruu utility version said 2.0.16.2014 and is KK 4.4, idk about sunshine as to reading about people with my phone and it not working so for a 25$ leap of faith not sure what to do about that. My phone is running perfect now in a locked down carrier branded and bloatware way lol. Thanks guys, anyway i can tell if sunshine will work on my phone?

I think that is the version of the actual installer software (.exe) not the ROM version it will install on your phone. Kitkat for AT&T would be either 1.58 or 2.23. That number will be in the actual file name of the RUU, so just look there (actually a much longer string of numbers starting with 1.58 or 2.23, but I've abbreviated them for convenience).

You install the sunshine APK, run it, and sunshine will tell you whether it can s-off the phone or not. You won't be charged unless it can successfully s-off the phone. I haven't heard of any folks here that got charged, and sunshine couldn't s-off the device.

Wow thanks for the info! Before i try this can after S-OFF/rooting/SU can i install the unlocked/developer ruu from HTC and get HTC OTA and get away from this bloated carrier branded crap? So much in the forums and i can't find a answer to this question anywhere.

No OS and Unable to Install GPE or RUU

OK. So I have no idea how I did it but I have succeeded in bricking my M8. Here are the basics:
- Rooted, was running Cyanogen 12
- TWRP is installed and I can get access to it.
- S-On....seems that I cannot get to S-Off at this point
- Have read thru multiple threads, downloaded an RUU that purports to be GPE, but I have not been able to get it to run.
- Am in the process of downloading a stock Lollipop 5.1 OS.
At this point I am at a loss on how to get an OS installed and running. Suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks

The screen comes on, so the phone is not truly bricked, and is recovable. Brick means the phone is not recoverable without opening it up (and either JTAG or new motherboard) and this thread would have no purpose.
What you have here is simply a failure to know how to properly recover.
You say you don't know how you got to this condition. But there must have been some step/events which led to no OS. Recall them and tell us, as best you can. Its much harder for folks to help, if we can't determine what you did to the phone.

True, the only working s-off method is sunshine, which requires a working OS. But you don't need to s-off to recover.

You can't just run any RUU. With s-on, you can only run an AT&T RUU. And it needs to be equal or greater firmware number (hboot, radio, etc.) than what is on the phone (no "downgrading").
If you downloaded the GPE ROM from the XDA thread, it clearly indicates that s-off is needed. So of course it won't work.
