[Q] Screen Mirroring Aspect Ratio - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
I am loving my new Nexus 9, but with a couple of issues.
The main one is that I screen mirror to my chromecast alot. The problem with this is being a 4:3 screen, my widescreen TV just has big black bars to the sides.
Is there anyway to force the tablet to be wide screen, where I will get the black bars on the tablet but then will be full screen on the TV?
Or is there anyway to stretch the output on the TV?

Maybe this app will help https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free
I'm not sure though. I just remembered this app from some time ago, and I don't have a chromecast to test with.

how to?
i modified aspect ratio in second screen, app and nothing changed, only in oversize, i can modify something, but only reducing image inside the 4:3 tv window, leting untouched the 2 black lines. 4 days working on, trying all the app, second screen app is the only one seems can do it, but only seems to?

[Q] Touchwiz Pan & Tilt

My Touchwiz update went fine on my stock unrooted tab. However, the new pan and tilt functionality doesn't work even though I've turned on all the settings and calibrated my tab.
Am I missing something or has anyone else experienced this?
this feature looks kind of.... stupid
For photos in the Gallery and web pages you need to put two fingers on the tablet initiate it's ability to zoom. They show holding it by the bottom corners then touching the screen with your thumbs. It works as show on mine. It can also be turned OFF in settings. Make sure its not OFF if you want to try it.
Ultimately it is a gimmick. Can't see even holding the tablet that way in normal use.

Agreed. For me, pinch to zoom works much better.
I like the ability to move an icon/widget from screen to screen while holding it down and turning tab left/right.
Much better for moving icons.

Apparently I'm as stupid as the feature...didn't realize two fingers had to be on the screen. Doh.

Help getting phone apps to run full screen on NT

I was able to install watch espn on NT and it runs only problem is it will not run full screen. I tried running spare parts and changing compatibilty mode with no success, any otger suggestions?

I just encountered this problem myself after installing Doodle Jump. It only shows up on a portion of the screen, and its not responding to my touch controls
Spare parts worked for me...need to reboot the device for the change to take effect.

Not every phone app is going to look good on a tablet.
It depends a lot on how good the app programmers were, and if they were flexible on screen resolution. Android makes it possible - the programmers make it happen.
If the app version looks good on Fire or other tablets, it should look good on NT.

Uncheck "Compatibility Mode", then reboot. Old apps written for a small phone screen will then not appear in a small box at the top of the screen. They may not exactly run in full-screen....that depends on how the app was written and whether or not it can format itself to the full screen, but they will no longer run in a small box surrounded by blackness.

Slightly cropped (bottom) HDMI out display

Hi,
The HDMI out works fine however the display is not full on the LCD TV. I can understand bottom navigation buttons being not visible, however I have noticed that there is slightly more area that gets cropped. I dont have a screenshot but assuming stock launcher and icons at the bottom row, I can see the bottom row icons fine however the labels line is missing. Has anyone come across this situation?
Yeah, I had this. I set the TV Display to 'Just Scan' and it sorted it.
I saw this problem too. On one TV I have a just scan setting but on a different TV there is no settings for aspect so that kinda sucks. There needs to be a setting on the TFP.

What do you mean by "Scan". I am using default settings on the TV. I checked it on LG and Sony LCD. The problem could be with TFP as mentioned by junkiehyjinx.

This ^, most tvs will have display options like 16 x 9, just scan, stretch and so on. Just scan shows the original signal format that is being sent to the tv, it takes the tvs scaling out of the equation, which is the problem most of the time.

Me too. No scan option. I think this is causing my issues with Sixaxis on the TV.

Need Tester for possible HDMI resolution workaround

Can people with an hdmi cable please go in to terminal emulator and execute the following command?
am display-size 1920x1080
Let me know how it looks...on my TV it is all zoomed in, doesn't look right, if your TV has a PC setting, use that.. I want to see if it is just my TV or not
To go back to how it was enter
am display-size reset
This is a possible(though not ideal) workaround when using hdmi
Would like to have people test it with different TVs/monitors
If you have a screen that supports it, you can use this command for 1440p
am display-size 2560x1440

for my dell 30 inch it zoomed it also
2560x1440 full screen stretched it. looks good nothing looks cutoff and the whole screen is being used.
Just watched a video and did a side by side comparison with my other monitor and nothing looked cutoff using mxplayer
1900x1080 zoomed in
2560x1600 did not do anything.
Although what I did notice was there is an extra space below my launcher in tablet mode but it doesn't show on the monitor only on the N10 itself but I use expanded mode also so its not that much of a problem imo

Yeah, when you are done you can run the reset command to make it normal again...
There is some cutoff on my phillips 42" lcd, it must be dependent on how the screen handles it...
No one else else? Man I figured there would be a few more people...

My tablet went onto the charger when I got home from work, otherwise I would try it.
I'll be trying this when I get home in a couple hours.

Awesome, looking forward to what you find!
I am also curious as to what people will be seeing.
My first impression is that it might actually be working...

Thanks this is great.
I just tried it:
Nexus 10: rooted Stock 4.2.2
HDTV: Samsung PN58C8000
HDTV screen size set to: 16x9
Player: MX Player Pro
Observations:
> First attached the HDMI cable before running the display-size command. I could not for some reason get the N10 terminal to accept the enter command. The enter button lit up on both the N10 and HDTV screens but the enter did not happen. Not sure what may be going on there.
> Second attempt with the HDMI cable disconnected I executed the "am display-size 1920x1080" command and the N10 screen adjusted to the new dimensions. Mainly every thing looked like it was zoomed in. Then I attached the HDMI cable and it seemed to fit perfectly without any overscan that I notice.
> Using MX Player I started video playback and it played full screen on the HDTV.
This looks like a great solution. I did have some problems but I use a combination of products so that I never have to see the notification and status bars one being "full!screen". The display change seemed to mess up full!screen's functionality. So in the end I had to reboot before issuing the "am display-size reset" command but I think that is a problem specific to my setup.
The reboot did NOT reset the display back to normal, I had to issue the reset in a terminal and then all was well. This is not an problem just an observation.
I also use both "SideBar" and the PIE feature of "LMT" and they worked with the changed resolution.
I am going to play around with this more but I think it would be very convenient to use SManager and its desktop script widgets to perform the display set and reset. The SManager Pro version can "Execute scripts from widgets without opening console". I already own SManager Pro.
If you really wanted to get fancy you may be able to have a script that accepts a video file path and or video stream URL, sets the display, starts MX Player passing the file path/url and then when MX Player ends resets the display. This idea needs more thinking and development before the fancy script would be useful.
Here is how to start an app in a script and here is the MX Player API details. I have not tried this yet but was going to for a completely different application.
I have some playing around to do, but this is important information.
Thanks again.
Doug
Sweet... Thanks for all the info... If anyone wants to try setting a script... Be my guest but it won't be me lol
I can adjust my display size while plugged in but I do get over scan... Mabey I'll try setting the size, then plugging in
could this be something that can be tied to Tasker? I don't have Tasker to find out (nor a microHDMI to HDMI cable!) so I don't know, but what about a tasker trigger for detection of the HDMI cable to send the "am display-size 1920x1080" command and then when the HDMI is removed send "am display-size reset"
Perhaps given 3DSammy response this might not be possible if the command has to be sent before connection to the TV...
I wrote the toggle script I was suggesting "HDMI Fullscreen Toggle Script".
Might have to try this out on stock rom and see how it goes... I'm guessing it's my TV but Mabey it's the rom... I get over scan on my phillips 42" lcd
Works for me. Thanks
Been trying just now, it does work with MX player on our lg plasma, however when set to 1080 n10 screen loses its nav bar so I can't exit MX player or navigate around, forced to reboot. but proof of concept nevertheless.

You lose your nav bar? That's weird... I don't lose mine... You can use LMT launcher or gmd gesture controls though...
Indeed, n10 is pure stock. Reboot resets everything so for a film watch session its ok. Am sure this knowledge will spread and media players like mxplayer can include that trick in future.
What would be nice now is to smooth out the little jitters I get when playing back a blue ray via HDMI now we can go full full screen.. Preferably non root as the old fella would get more confused.. Its almost perfect so being close is bit irritating

Huh... According to 3DSammy it doesn't reset with a reboot... That's weird as well...

This is almost a perfect program for it, only it doesn't rotate the camera, and i have to put the camera in upright position on the steering.
If there's another app for rotating the movie's its perfect.
Thank a lot
Greats Robert
