SOLVED : They made it too slippery - Nexus 6 Accessories

NoI have been upset and very paranoid about how slippery they made the back of this phone. I thought their design decisions were BAD choices. I bought and tried a couple cases. I think of a case as protection, and the only ones that 'really' protected . . . added considerable bulk and weight. Its already 'shamu' to begin with. And I do not like all of the fuzzies that get stuck along the edges with cases. I thought I hit the jackpot with that Canadian company selling stick-ons, but their product ( though it 'looks' fantastic ), changed the slipperiness very little . . .
.
I found and am trying this :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QECFHG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
.
Yep, I'm rough and rubbery now. ( I'm rubber and you're glue. Anything you say, bounces off me and sticks onto you ! . chuckle, chuckle . . . I had to say that . . . ) . It is definitely not slippery now ! ! ! It don't look bad at all ( translucent ) and I "always" choose function over form .
.
No, I didn't cover up the tiny little microphone hole near the bottom on the back.

You put this tape on a 700 dollar phone?

He ought to get some sandpaper while he's at it. That'll take care of the smoothness.

Yes, one roll lets me do fifteen phones - and it is the same as the pick-ons, really . . .
It also works GREAT on the bottom runners of my rocking chair, so my hardwood floor don't get scratched.

Next time you're up for it, I want you to get some low grit sandpaper and run it down the backside of your Nexus 6 a few times and tell me what happens.

Geez, he's only sharing something that worked for him. No need to get hostile. If it's not your thing then just let it be.

My guess is "old fart" is an engineer in his mid to late 40s and I respect his desire to advance the function of his products.
The lack of people like OP are half the reason our country (the US) sucks.

I want to see some pictures as well. I really question the application of sandpaper honestly. Apparently the nexus has a coating of water repellent that will keep it safe from water splashes and dunkings. Don't know if sanding it will remove this layer as well but sticking tape over it will keep that water repellent layer intact.
Initially I was also thinking of just applying some gaffers tape. That stuff can add a nice matte black sort of finish.

There is no 'sand paper' to this rubbery, bumpy stick-on tape. . . None. . . . Absolutely zero grit to the product, God be my witness . . . I went and "put on" the Canadian "dBrand" ( $10 ) tape . . . . weeks before I went to Amazon and got their rubber coated tape. The rubber tape is 'clear' translucent ( think of a shower curtain ). The bumpy, clear tape went on "OVER" the color tape. So, I got stick-on over the top of stick-on. But first, I emailed and chatted with the Canadian company, asking them if they would have / or would be selling a "very non-slippery" product. They said no. Maybe they'll change their mind . . .
.
I will ask my ( always busy ) son to come on by and take some pictures.

I agree that the back is very slippery.. The other day wearing gloves and holding it, there is flew out of my hand and cracked the screen.

I work with the elderly so I consider anyone under 75 to be young.
That being said, someone on this forum talking the way this guy was struck me as someone probably in their mid to late fifties.
Subtract ten years for generosity sake and I arrived at mid to late forties.

Honestly, I don't mind being lumped under something older than "old fart." Heck, I even use shampoo meant to make my grey hair stand out more (i.e., as opposed to coloring or covering it up) as it slowly takes over my head - might as well own this getting older thing.
Gotta love common sense solutions to straightforward problems, even if our tastes differ when it comes to how we present our phones in public.

I've been following the Nexus 6 forum since the first post, and this is the strangest thread so far.

Guys, old fart is a joke account. Not a funny one either. Stop taking him seriously. Probably some stupid bored teenager who thinks its funny for some reason. Just ignore it.

I think this is an awesome idea. It comes in black & in a 4" wide roll. Use a dbrand skin as a template & you've got a bona fide non slip skin. What more to want?

For my application, I did not apply any tape on the center dip. So there is a wide strip along the left and right back sides. . I discovered that it had a side benefit of "taking the wobble away" ! . Wobbling when you lay it down, is another pain / annoyance . . But not a loss of $$$ when you drop it pain . . . .

Clear Case+ FORD GT= GT Wizard?!

Ok so I bought a clear case here And while working, I was inspired by A black and silver Ford GT sitting in our shop. Here are the results.
that looks pretty good. may i ask where did you buy your case.
eBay
You can buy it from eBay a seller "e2" in Hong Kong, but shipping just about a full month. I bought 2 and am using none of them. They are garbage because the holders (places where plastic pieces stickout) will scratch your phone no matter what. Overtime, the places where the case is held on the phone will be pressed leaving the paint on the phone depressed and scratched. Otherwise it will protect the phone real good.

They are not the highest in quality, and it took ten days shipping. But it sounds like you need to trim the "flash" around the tabs, you can also cut the tabs off and use little pieces of 2-sided tape, which will solve all of your mentioned problems.. for less than $5.00 and you can paint 'em any color you want, I ain't complaining!

VERY NICE PIMP! Very nice indeeed. an affortable and less dodgy way to do it
What paint you used? And sorry if I am blind, but you painted the cases you bought, not the phone itself, right ?
And BTW, looks ...WOOW
Nice job!
that reminds me of a friend of mine who once owned one of the cheapest polish cars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polski_Fiat_125p) and painted id in similar way (actually he made quite lot of modding inside as well, including chrome-metallic parts that resembled washing machine in a way
oh well, there's been a lot of fun with this piece of junk... and the guy's nickname is still "Viper" ;]

I am a Developmental Marketing Technician for Ford Motor Co. I pulled the "Paint Codes" from the door of the GT in the Third Picture. And used PPg enamel paint. I think any paint will work?! And yes I painted the inside. I screwed up the stripes (they should be wider and closer together). But I was in a hurry, I did it on my lunch hour, and still had time to eat! The paint looks really good!! The clear Plastic makes it look like a super thick clear-coat!! I spent a little time on a bench buffer with it. But the paint will never scratch, because it is inside!!
[HINT]
Oh yeah, a little Tip if you decide to try!!! After spraying the inside, no matter how well you mask it, you will end up with a mist of paint on the outside. A little polishing compound and a soft rag removes it like magic!!
Here is a Link to a picture of the case without the phone
congratulations
anione knows if this clear case exist for i- mate k-jam or qtek 9100??

Just dropped my phone a few hours ago and extremely upset... Luckily it was in its case but a coupla corners still got damaged
I was about to purchase a replacement housing but seeing this post, this would be a much cheaper alternative... Just gotta think of a theme now and find an artist...

Flash means when a plastic piece is cast, a small amount of plastic is left over that needs to be trimmed, or it could leave a jagged edge.
The circle on the back gives it a stable base when you lay the phone down...

man, why dont they sell these cases in the stores?????
that's a pretty damn good job, nice work!!
My wizzard 's casing is pretty beat up due to me dropping it, just laying it down on concrete, etc. I'm really thinking about actually sanding and 'polishing' the body of it to make it more shiny/get rid of scratches....and then buy a hardcase to go over that...
Wow... tahts the nicest case i've ever seen. Nice job... you should resell your case... =]
I did the same thing(well, solid black). It looks awsome from the front, but I cant get the back to really fit to the phone. I don't know if its my phone or if I just got a bad case.
I think I would have a little trouble returning it painted black though!

Qtek 9100 (Wizard) Low quality case

After using the phone for tow weeks the dark gray part of the case (midle body) start to foil down like a nail polish and the gray paint is slowly going off revealing a black material. Did any one else have same problem ???? Some solutions ??? I know maybe is not such a big deal the device is a great tool and this is a small meter!! but i was thinking maybe is possible to wash off the painture until the black color of the material!!! any one did this ???
Many thanks for every body who participate in here!!! This is a great forum !!! the answer to my all questions is here!!!
I've seen the same on my 9100, but only on the right-hand side (the one with the camera & voice buttons). I haven't bothered to do anything about it, but I do keep the phone in a leather case, so the flaking shouldn't get much worse.
That the black paint comes off the device is a problem with all Wizards it seems....I have it also and I don't really like it.
Does anybody here know if there are Wizard cases for sale ....anywhere ?
Mine has that problem too...well, i helped a bit so..now it doesn't have any paint on it.

Why not just pop open the phone and remove the camera?
The bondo idea was the best, you could buy a new phone cover, chop out a section of the old one and use bondo to secure it, sand it down and it should look stock.

So in this area, you cannot carry a camera, but you can carry a sound recorder and 2-way communication device? Sounds odd.
I mounted a thin metal plate to the whole flat section of the back of my G1 so I could stick it to a large neo magnet that is glued to the dash in my truck. I don't care about the compass not working. Plus, I have tested it after about 6 months. If I put a regular back on it the compass still works great. No lasting effects.
I used the side of an old computer case. Cut out the shape I needed. I cut out a hole for the camera and speaker but you could just cover the camera and leave the speaker free. After I got everything smooth, I gave the whole thing a brushing with 150 grit sand paper in a uniform direction. Then I put it on my kitchen stove top on high for about 5 min to blue the metal. It gives it a great finish that resists rusting and isn't sticky or easily scratched like paint.

I am amazed that sticking your phone to a big-ass magnet all day has no lasting effects..
None what so ever. GPS works great. Accelerometer works great. Doesn't affect storage or memory. Again, I took the back cover off after about 6 mo. Compass works fine. Must be because it's solid state.
wonder if this guy ever figured it out?
very easy way would be to peel the piece of glass off the back of the phone cover and replace it with a piece of sheetmetal so they know there isnt a hole in it. you can get scraps from pretty much anywhere and shape them with a dremel...

Kevlar stripe - Flimsy ?

I saw on a video that somebody could easily tear that kevlar piece out from right under the camera... It looks loose and flimsy, and not well stuck on the back of the phone.
Can anyone confirm this by sticking your nail under the weave right under the camera ? Last thing I want is to buy a phone for 600 bucks and have the back tear up on me after a month.

It's not the kevlar back but the plastic covering on the top (camera/flash/speaker) which can be taken off, possibly revealing some screws. Other than that there seems to be no way to open the device.

This request/observation is just hilarious.
Why not take ANY phone and try to jam an ice pick between the edge of the glass and the phone. Hit it with a hammer.... does anything happen?
Or drop any phone from a really tall building, cause I'd hate to spend $600 on a phone and not have it survive something like.
Maybe put any phone in a blender, cause I'd hate to spend $600 on a phone and not have it blend properly.

Nope, it isn't.
If I get a device and the plastic that covers the screws gets detached easily it's a build flaw. If the Kevlar thing gets detached it's a design flaw. If you drop your phone from a tall building or hit it with an hammer it's a flaw of your brain.
It's different.
I wouldn't pick at my RAZR like that anyways.

I agree. The guy in the vid didn't use force. Come to think of it the OP didn't really meant to use force and try to open the back cover.
The cover we know is kevlar and durable. The material witch glues it on the phone how durable is it?
Tbh im in love with the back cover of the phone. I'd never put a cover/case on it. I wouldn't want to put one out of need( safe sex suxx )
Obviously, DrUnKenSTeiN is probably the only intelligent human on this post.
Where did anyone here read that I want you to remove the cover or bash it with a hammer ?
All I asked was to see if that thing is flimsy and all I got was raw violence by some members who probably have Attention deficit disorder (syntrix, ianford)
When I asked once if a certain laptop was flimsy, one intelligent human pressed on the lid lightly, checked for keyboard flex, and gave me his opinion.
You may say it's not important for daily use, but so does Android OS or a large screen. A smartphone can be productive without them, but this is not what discussion boards are about.
You may be excused to feel embarrassed, thanks.

Would just like to confirm that the phone in the video DOES have a defect. With all the force in the world I couldn't even get my fingernail under the Kevlar, let alone pry it up. He did it with no effort, like it was hanging off. Mine is sealed so tight (top, bottom and along the sides) you couldn't do anything to it if you tried.

If your phone is sealed then its not something that all razrs got. Seems like a flaw in the specific device.
Its important for guys that have bought the phone and its defective that they wont think that ,this is how the phone is.

I messed around with 4 RAZR's today at three different stores. I even took out a penny that was scarred and I was not able to even scuff the Kevlar. It's on there on all the edges and sides REALLY REALLY good. And, that Kevlar is REALLY durable.
The one in the VIDEO MUST BE DEFECT.

It is a die-cast aluminium body which then has the antennas placed on the outside (because the signals wouldn't get through the metal) there is then a primer to help the paint bond to the aluminium and cover up the antennas. They then use a microdised finish over the top which is effectively a metallic paint.
It's not plastic it's just not been machined and anodised. They were going for a different take on the metal body that could allow them to hide the antennas.

They then use a microdised finish over the top which is effectively a metallic paint.
It's not plastic it's just not been machined and anodised. They were going for a different take on the metal body that could allow them to hide the antennas.

A diffrent take lol. That plastic coating pretty much negates the need of having metal in a phone. Just make it out plastic if ythats all ill feel when holding it !
Most concerning part is the display assembly. So thin that you can see the pressure points when you select something. Maybe i am to demanding idk, but all the different phones over the years i have never experienced such thing.

You get the benefit of heat dissipation and rigidity/strength of the metal body instead of a plastic body.

im pretty sure no one complained about such thing with S5/G4 and earlier devices that used full plastic builds. You are delusional my friend, they are missleading consumers, & then coming out with some bs excuse, "we are doing it differently, we didnt want to do what everyone else is doing" !
I'm not delusional, people just seem to have got it stuck in their heads it is basically a full plastic build. There is plastic in every metal phone, just of varying degrees.
I've no issue with the way they have constructed the phone. If you don't like it then don't buy it.

i gotta see ppls experiences with the G5, its good to know how good the competition is doing this year , apparently there is none so far
I got the S7 Edge as well but was hanging around here to see if I liked the G5 as I still have one more jump until July with Tmobiles jump on demand.
Looks like I'll be waiting to see what the HTC 10 brings to the table.

The truth is LG G5 is ugly phone compared to galaxy S7 edge. I even think HTC 10 will be better then LG G5.
Am sorry to say.

definetly, the chanfer might be too big, but still, they are fixing what was broken in previous gens, & there software is the top OEM skin out there, so yeah it will be a good competitor to the S7/Edge.
It's called paint people get over it, especially from your gs7s
trolls everywhere…
seriously… this device has not been shipped worldwide yet and people already start complaining about built quality. get a life.
i preordered my g5 including a free camera module and i'm proud of that decision so far.
all thats left is that they start shipping to germany.
I keep wanting to think that the GS7E is good lucking. Maybe it's just that I'm coming from the G3 but....it just seems too damn narrow! But to be honest, the biggest problem is that I can't play with the GS7E at any of the stores, they're all on demo mode...maybe I should go into another carrier's store where there's one I can actually demo. Can anyone tell me whether your carrier typically has its demo phones NOT on retail mode? I'm on sprint here (and still undecided between G5/GS7E/GS7).

I per-ordered the G5 and got it Friday. I have had no issues with. This whole metal vs. plastic issue is a joke. Structurally speaking, this is great phone. They had to switch to the thin metal aluminum in the back because of the void between the back and the screen when you take out the battery. And when you do take the battery out, there's very little to no deflection.
I have an metal body iphone 5s for work and i hate it. This is so much better.

I'm not here to insult, just to inform on my experience thus far. However, i wish you wouldn't be commenting so negatively on this phone without using it for some considerable time. A 10 minute in-store demo use of the phone shouldn't count especially when you are looking for all the negatives. When i pick up a phone in the store i look for all the negatives first before the positives.
Like I said, the look and fell of this phone is great after 4 days of use. The main selling point for me was the removable battery and the camera. The battery seems like it's very easy to swap and the camera is superb. I took it to a show on Friday and the pictures where incredible especially in wide view. I'm sure the 7s takes better pictures, but i really like the wide angle.
I personally don't care for all the friends modules they're advertising.
Had i read your comments before i purchased the phone, i probably wouldn't have bought the phone. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to answer.
