[Q] Deleted my OS, please help - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been an idiot and managed to wipe my OS. I have TWRP and I was wondering what the easiest way to recover my OS would be.
Am I right in thinking I can get a stock rom from samsung updates, stick it on the SD card and flash it on?
IF so, can any of you give me detailed instructions or point me to some?
Thanks.

If you still have your recovery partition intact then u can just download a custom ROM (flashable zip file format) of your choice and flash thru TWRP. Hey presto fone fixed.
Check out the S3 android and original android dev pages, look thru them till you see one you like. Preferably pre-rooted.

Go to sammobile.com and download the latest stock rom for your country. Follow the guide in general forum on how to flash with Odin.

Odin doesn't seem to work for me, I boot into TWRP, connect via USB with Odin up and nothing changes.

Follow the guide, Odin uses download mode not recovery.
If you keep doing things without reading and understanding first then you will hard brick it.

@boomboomer is right you need to stop panicking sit back and read the stickies in the general thread >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/samsung-galaxy-s3-sticky-roll-thread-t2344125 << you are lacking basic knowledge and need to read up or you will end up with a paper weight as a phone.:crying:

I fixed it with a custom ROM via SD Card and install in TWRP. Sorry I forgot how to enter download mode as opposed to recovery mode. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Galaxy s2 odin error

I tried to flash a firmware via odin and it stucks to factoryfs.img.now i cant open my phone. When im flashing every firmware va odin it stucks at factoryfs.img.i tried to wipe everything from the stock recovery and retry but i had no success.when im flashing kernels i have no error.so i was wondering if i could flash cf-root and then when i will be into recovery push files via adb to internal sdcard.is this possible?if yes tell me how.If not tell me other ways to unbrick my device
Which firmware did you try? Try to flash a stock firmware. Go here and pick up the latest ROM and follow the instructions it is very well explained

Good luck

i flashed a stock firmware.i tried this and i had no result.if you can answer this i told about cwm and adb i would be very happy
try another cable.
I had similar problem because of a poor cable ordered from e-bay.
even if you are using the stock cable, try another one as it might be damaged.
gokhan thanks for your help but it didn't work.if i format the /system partition will i be able to get into download mode?
I don't see how you could get Odin to recognise your phone in order to format the system partition if you weren't able to get into download mode.
So I guess I'll play Captain Obvious...Can you get into download mode ?
If not, does Odin recognise the phone when you hook the phone up to a PC via a USB cable ? (a long shot I know but I'm trying to think of anything that might work here).

You really need to start giving more information.
Excactly what rom did you tried to flash? And yes, you can just flash CF-Root and start flashing from recovery. If it is possible to push the files true adb, I don't know. But you will have adb for sure in recovery.
And why are you flashing? It looks like you have really no idea what you are doing.
the problem is solved.i flashed a cwm 9 rom via odin and now im ok.now im flashing chechrom.i had checkrom and i undervolted too much.the phone closed but accidenatly i had ticked the set on bot button.my external sd is broken and i didnt have a checkrom backp into my internal sdcard.so i decided to flash an official firmware and then flash again checkrom.this is the story but now my problem is solved so you can lock the thread.thank you all

softbricked

Hi. I think i soft bricked my phone because its stuck at the logo but i can go to recovery and download mode. i even flashed ms1 stock rom with odin but without the .pit file and no changes. where can i get the pit file and is it the only way?
EDIT:in the stock recovery there is an error saying read only file system
1- You can search "softbrick" and read other users' experiences.
2- If you are looking for your stock firmware, you can search samfirmware.com or your variants development forums.
3- If you can use recovery you can nuke your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532929
Good luck and get back if you have troubles.

No, using PIT file is not advisable as it brings more trouble to u
So since its a Boot loop issue for now, Just flash a Custom Kernel like 'Philz' from ODIN and then use its recovery to do a full wipe and then reboot ur phone and check
Search for 'Philz' kernel thread and once there read the first post carefully and act

[Q] Cannot access Phiz recovery

Hello!
I have an i9100 that was rooted but collapsed with a custom rom.
I wanted to reflash the stock rom via Odin (XXLSJ). It worked but I was stuck with a boot loop.
I flashed a matching Philz recovery cwm6-xxlsj-oxx.4.31 via Odin but I cannot access it by pressing volume up + home + power button.
As a matter of fact I tried to flash other cwm versions and non of them would start by using the buttons...
I spent a lot of time looking for answer but haven't found any. I also tried to flash other custom roms via Odin but none of these work.
I would appreciate help a lot! I rooted some phones already but a detailed instruction would be preferable.
Thanks once again!
Find Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' guide stickied in the General section. Download the 3 part stock firmware linked in the thread, flash with Odin (this will wipe your phone). If you have problems with the flash, do the stuff suggested in the thread until you get a successful one. This will give you a 'clean slate'.
From there, you can re-root your thread & flash a custom rom/whatever. How ? Search. 'How to root' has been asked/answered thousands of times here over the past two years; one hint I'm giving you: Thread stickied near top of Q&A has simple root method (others in guides/tutorials stickied near top of General section). So far as flashing a given rom is concerned, flashing instructions are always on the first page of the thread devoted to the rom, and are clear/concise 99.9% of the time.
Best bit of advice I can give you - don't do anything to your phone until you understand what you're doing. Not doing so leads to busted phones. Take your time.

Thank you for the answer. However, I tried those.
I don't have any problem with the flashing of that ROM, it just wouldn't start. It is boot-looping.
I can flash the Siyah kernel via Odin, but I cannot enter CWM after that so I cannot perform that procedure.
Try this
Take out battery, hold vol up + home + power and put the battery back without releasing the buttons.

So now I am back on XXKH3. It would not start but I managed to root it like this:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-root-xxkh3-firmware-on-galaxy-s2-i9100-guide/
Now there is CWM but it says it cannot mount cache or sd card or nothing.
What can I do?
what are you trying to do?
You can try to format the internal sd card with a pc while booted to cwm.Backup all files important to you before formatting!
connect to a pc,in cwm mount usb storage and format.

So, now I have Dorimanx recovery. I can access it occasionnally.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2058683&highlight=pit
I checked the memory but it is okay.
I tried to format the internal memory but I could not do that nor via pc, neither via CWM.
That should be the solution I guess because anytime I want to install a new custom rom via CWM, there is an error message.
Any suggestion for this?
I would want to install any custom rom and use my phone. That is the goal.
So, I get these messages:
can't copy meta-inf/com/google/android/update-binary
I wanted to run CWM-SuperSU-v0.99 but I get the same that 'Read-only file system'.
What now?
copy the rom you want to flash to the external sd card and try to flash.
Also if that fails, try booting without external sd,maybe it's causing problems.

I figured I should try to reflash a stock rom, then DorimanX 8.43, then CWM-SuperSU and then flash a new rom.
I hope this will work because my inetrnal memory cannot be accessed from the mount USB storage mode in CWM

You don't need to flash cwm supersu because dorimanx kernel is already pre-rooted.

[Q] I messed up something (black screen). Need help!

I knew I'll break it one day so no big surprise here.
Let me start from the beginning. I was testing a new ROM (C-ROM to be exact) but i didn't like it's using TWRP (I hate this thing, i'm used to CWM), so I tried installing CWM by using ROM Manager so I can restore from my Nandroid backup. Despite the "success" message of ROM Manager - the phone kept booting into TWRP recovery so i googled a "flashable cwm zip" and found this: CWM Recovery v6.0.4.5 for Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 ZIP
I flashed the above zip using TWRP (success message followed) but when i rebooted the phone - NOTHING came up. I thought myself i bricked it but i managed to go to download mode.
Where do i go from here? I guess i'll have to use PC Odin from here but i don't know what to do exactly (i'm not power user).
C'mon...You don't know how to flash a rom with Odin ? Not like it's a great secret, you don't need to be a 'power user', this info is easily found by searching (or even looking in the thread stickied near the top of Q&A titled 'Flash stock firmware').
Get a stock rom from Samfirmware, flash it with instructions in that thread. Problems with Odin flash ? Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General has all the info you need to get a successful flash.
Edit - Also, it was Rom Manager that broke your recovery. Don't use it. Yes, you may have been using it for a long time without problems, but that changed today, didn't it ? Eventually what happened to you will happen to everyone who uses Rom Manager on the I9100. It's unnecessary.

1) Flash stock rom using 'ODIN'
2) Search for 'Philz' kernel thread and fallow instruction there to 'Root' your 'Stock Rom'.
3) then u can try its recovery to restore the 'Nand bkp' .
4) if the Bkp rom is KK then flash a KK compatible kernel and then try restoring the Nand bkp.

Odin is for flashing the original firmware from Samsung. You should be able to find it here in the forum for your phone. They usually will post it either in the General or Development sub-forums. If you can't find the exact one you need, then you can check out sammobile.com, though it is usually a pretty slow download. You must use the one for your variant of S4 and can be specific to your carrier or region, depending on which S4 you have. You should only use the same firmware or newer.
odin for samsung
i will recommend try flashing a custom recovery like twrp or philz for flashing a custom rom
flash recovery image using odin or any adb boot type commands
also be device specific when u search for rooting or flashing roms to avoid bricking of the device
