I don't understand why don't people read about android memory management. There was even quite nice post in phonearena about it.
To give short answers - free ram in android is useless ram.
Just read about android mem management, its android way to utilise quite a lot of ram, to provide you with fluid user experience and fast app response. 700MB is more than enough free ram!
its enough

Hey guys. I am a bit worried. The phone seems to be running fine but my RAM is constantly bellow 250 MB... I am killing everything possible and constantly using advanced task killer but still. I even saw a point where I had 90mb ram left... sometimes I can see that temple run also runs choppy. I find this extremely strange ... any help would be appreciated ...

Stop using f*ckin advanced task killer.
It hasn't been needed since 2.1.
It does more harm than good.
250mb free ram is fine, touchwiz likes ram, deal with it.

Have you tried de-bloating your phone? It would also be good to disable application that auto-starts.
Hey. You don't have to worry about the available RAM being low. Android manages RAM usage differently than most other Operating Systems like OSX and Windows. Essentially, having RAM used up in Android is good because it caches apps in the background which allows you to have fluid multitasking.
If you are worried about performance then the best thing to do would be to install an app called Watchdog. This app will monitor the CPU usage of apps. These truly affect the performance of the phone. In general though don't worry about the RAM. And whatever you do, don't use a Task Killer for RAM purposes. This can be damaging because it can corrupt files and processes and inevitably cause more harm than good.
Hope that helps

Yep, 3rd party memory management sw use more power than they save so uninstall it at your earliest convenience please As you know ICS handles memory beautifuly. IT clears memory as needed so don't waste your time on memory-peeping and enjoy your phone

You cannot stop apps from autostarting without root.
You do not need root to remove bloatware.
Go to settings and apps, and then click on what you don't want and disable it.
how about this, this is really worst, i don,t have much bloatware running, still ram is very low

there are threads with options for this.
ROOTED anyway.
edit your build prop, change the delvik heap size to 128....freed up ram for me, though i honestly dont need it. i only have around 100mgb of free ram and my phone still multie tasks like a champ.
but there are options.
The story about ram management being different on android or linux is a common explanation used with regard to why ram consumption is not something to be worried about, but it is not entirely true. The truth is, ram and cpu speed work hand in hand. If your ram is full, then the cpu has to constantly open and close background processes, and this will slow the phone down if the cpu is slow. For example, on the Galaxy S, the phone starts to lag when ram falls below 100mb. However, there is no such problem on the Galaxy S3. This is due to the quad core cpu which is able to open and close processes fast enough that there is no noticeable lag. With that said, ram consumption is nothing to be worried about on multi-core phones, despite the fact that it was a problem on older single core phones. The only way the ram on the Galaxy S3 would be limited enough to cause problems is if a single app or process requires more than the 780mb available, which is extremely unlikely.

This is assuming that what the cpu is processing is not in RAM, which is the point of it anyway

That is false. The US versions have 2GB of RAM because of their processor using more RAM. Jellybean runs just fine on the Galaxy nexus with 1GB of RAM and only a dual core processor.

Your version of the story is after taking on new facts as well, this is like Chinese whispers.
The nexus s is getting it, the nexus s has 512mb of ram of which 360mb is usable.
End. Of. Story.
I have JB on my gnex and its using 300mb ram with 400 free and I have loads of apps open.

Thanks for post. Many users don't know this
I'm waiting for someone to come in to this thread and try to tell us why you need 50 gigs of Ram and how his US variant with 2 gigs of RAM is far superior to the international, I own both so before this even comes to light lets be clear, clean, cut and dry the international version is smoother than the US variant no matter how many of you RAM fanatics want to tell me that 2 gigs is master race. Further Android manages RAM very well on it's own you can probably run just about anything with 512mb of RAM, but a whole gigabyte that's just butter on my toast. I hope people will actually read this thread and learn how their devices work instead of just yelling about how they need more RAM and wonder why they have no battery life when a task manager constantly clears the cache. I would appreciate it if one of the more informed members of XDA can make a simple write up of how Android manages RAM and why more free RAM is not always better :highfive:
Whilst I agree with the comments here it sometimes helps by not being rude to people who aren't as knowledgeable with android as some of us and who are asking questions like I have seen in some threads.
Whilst the adage free RAM is wasted RAM is generally correct with android there is no harm in freezing of uninstalling apps that you know you don't use.
For example I never use svoice and chat-on so there is no harm in freezing those or preventing them from loading if they will never be used.
Whilst unused RAM IS wasted RAM,,, RAM used by unused apps is also wasted ram
Go easy on the noobs and have a good weekend.

If I'm not mistaken the architecture of the version supporting HSPA does not support 2gb, that's why the Korean variant is slightly different and has 2 gigs of RAM, essentially It wouldn't have made any difference, the 32nm a9 process is about as far as it's going to go. (also I think the Korean version has 2 gigs of Ram due to LTE taking up more resources)
op, maybe it is not the issue of free-ing up RAM.. it also save up some battery...
eg: before you went to slp... make sure all are shut down.. and hv a minimal prog open for sync/phone..
of course now all OS have RAM optimism, but then sometime/some of the OS are not so profession on this.
most of the time due to the OS rooted/JB, which will have different methodology for optimizing the RAM.
Well, you can't deny the fact that more ram equals better multitasking. With less than 200mb of free ram after several days of use, my browser has to reload whenever I minimise it to check messages. But that wouldn't be the case if I had more free ram, ie when I've just rebooted the phone.

If more RAM doesn't matter, then why do I get booted out of Tintin and other heavy gameloft games whilst having had to run other program before the games were started? The only way to play without the game crashing is first be clearing cache. Would it be low RAM, Samsung's fault(no good optimizations), or gameloft's fault(no good optimizations)?

Hi folks,
just bought me a S3 yesterday and i realized there is just 779 MB ram. Where are the other 200 MB ?
What does Samsung say about that?
Is there a kernel or rom out there which allows to have more ram available?
Thanks
799mb available to the user (you) and the other 201mb is taken up by system processes.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Those megabytes are in system and graphics usage. But if you want to slightly increase your RAM, you'll have to try some other kernels than stock, or other roms...
Thanks for the answers, now I understand.
I was a little sceptical because on my sister's HTC One X there is almost a gigabyte available to the user.
Some ammount of the total 1G RAM is also "given" to the GPU, that's why you don't see 1024 MB as max. free.
It's there, just reserved to the GPU.

The 200MB is being used by Android OS (Ice-Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean) itself
Every android phone has this. Even similar ones like HTC One-X.
I was bit disapointed to that fact aswell, because Galaxy S2 had more free ram than GS3. Why not just have 2GB ram on the device.
Well, till Galaxy S4 maybe then.

Why is it that sony only gives us user accessible of 600 out of 1g compared to samsungs's 800 out of 1g? Im comparing xperia s and galaxy s2. Im really annoyed because fb itself consumes 50mb at least even when not running. And another heavy app will inhibit you 70% of the time to multi task because the low ram will result in the system automatically shutting down previous opened apps. Which means if i wanted to switch in betwee apps, most of the time i have to load everything all over.. Plus, if i press home, launcher redraw problem.. This is all because of sony's poor ram management.
I really love my xperia s but this is getting annoying. Will jellybean solve the issue or is the ram going to stay this way? Im gonna consider switching brand if this issue will stay. Im always at 450 ram used after closing every apps used compared to 310 aftter rebooting phone. Meaning there are apps not totally shutting down even if you close it. So in short, on normal usage, i only have like 100+ free ram. Soo pissingly effin annoying!!!!!!!!!!!
