Hi,
any idea whether Z2 tablet will support external 3G modem, e.g. huawei E173 u2 with the micro usb host cable ?
I mean the default wifi only version, without any customization applied
you could try ppp widget from the play store, i use to use it on my old acer. you need to be rooted at the very least though. the widget is a bit hit and miss depending on your hardware though.
While not exactly answering your question you might want to consider using a Mifi-style device instead ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiFi )

I just opened this up to start discussing WiFi support for XDA I.
I understand that there is no SDIO slot in the XDA that will support the SD WiFi cards, however, there must be some smart guy/company out there that is willing to create something for WiFi capability and take advantage of the existing XDA market.
Here are some ideas for discussion:
1. Have an external device that plugs into the bottom slot for WiFi connectivity.
2. Have a company like PocketPCTechs.com that can replace the current SD slot with a SDIO slot.
If anyone knows of anything regarding WiFi support for the XDA I feel free to share. 8)
Agree. For the time being, the only way of getting connected to a LAN or WAN without schlepping your PC to act as a proxy server for pass-through would be to use a LAN/WAN-to-RS232 converter that could be plugged to the serial port socket on the XDA. I have tried a few RS232 I/O adapters with the XDA. and my results are available at:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/prutchi/xda_connectivity.doc
You'll notice that I manage to communicate with resources on the net via a terminal, but haven't been able to trick IE into accepting my RS232 feed yet.
"2. Have a company like PocketPCTechs.com that can replace the current SD slot with a SDIO slot."
yeah but unless the connectors the SDIO use are already drawn out on the curcitboard where the sd connector is located it would be a lot of work
also maybe it would require a speciel rom
i doubt there is a big enough market though for anybody to get their R&D expenses covered with a product which is being fased out
I agree with the comments and feel a Wi-Fi solution for SD would be greatly appreciated.
One track I am following came to me as I was playing with an USB GPS from a colleague( It had no brandname!) and thought the interface could be integrated to a USB Access point device, there is some coding to make the device recognizable!

to give the xda GPS ?
cant see how this would give it wireless lan
No I used the GPS interface to the XDA and code for recognizind the GPS to connect to a UPS Wireless Acess Point device from Linksys. I did not buy the RS 232 Cable.
Ronin:
Can you clarify on what you did? My understanding is that you use some GPS hardware to access a Wi-Fi point of access. Is this true? And if so were you able to connect to the internet and use IE, email, etc.?
Thanks
Axe Camarao!
I used the cable for a GPS Device to connect to a USP wireless access point on the XDA( zircom USB 802.11b Access Point). I used the software from the GPS as a template to show me how the GPS got recognized as a unit. I used the standard pin configuration instead of getting a cable and sodering it.( short on time!)
Althougth, I am able to ping various sites from CRT I cannot use it with IE. I am trying to emulate the GPS reader software( which is a browser for that format) and port it to Pocket IE. Potentially, but I do not think I will be sucessfull.
This was a test, because I really wanted a small form Wi_FI for the XDA, but it is more of a nuisance than any practical application. The GPS hardware uses the XDA DLLs and heaps in an interesting fashion and will cause the T-Mobile radio Stack to cease scanning for intermitents periods while the cable is attached.
I am trying to find an SD to CF card converter and use a CF Wi-Fi off the shelf unit...
No luck with the idea of an adaptor from SD to Compact Flash and I cannot get the USB Wi Fi Wireless Acess Point to function in pIE. That tentative solution is still too cumbersome and does not have a good form function either.
I left San Disk support a few messages/email to see if they are planing to release an SD WIFI card that is not SDIO based but have no feedback yet.
Also, "contemplating "a SD Blue Tooth adaptor and creating a bridge to a WIFI hub somehow.
I did download the software for the SDIO and reviewing how it addresses the communication protocols in WM2003 and Pocket PC 2002!
Is there anyone with a SDIO phone who has one of these devices? Does it work?
Now an interesting approach can be found at:

I am sending away for one of these cables- I do have the USB Wireless Access point device and will see if it works...
Bump...
Any news on the WiFi front?
J
not that i've heard but as i see it the market is way too small for any company bothering making a wifi sd-io
I agree. We are not going to get any manufacturer to create an SD card ( when the market is evolving to SDIO anyways) so, I have some "ideas" but need some help to test them out and see if we can get WiFI for our:

Hi! I have bought the original micro usb to usb adaptor. I wonder if there is an application to help me conect my usb internet modem to my phone so I can use my internet provider network instead of the sim data connection? Now when I connect my usb modem to the phone I see the led lightening but I think it is needed a application for make it recognised by the phone and with some protocols to use it like an external modem.
Any ideas?

Are Wi-Fi routers really that expensive in Romania?
Nice one. No my friend I have one at my place but I travel a lot and my internet provider package is only 250Mb (can't change it cause is a company phone). I have this modem from my internet provider and I'm using it with my laptop when I don't have a Wi-Fi network available and it will be nice and useful to make it work also with my smartphone.

You should be able to use the laptop as a wireless "hotspot" while the USB modem is plugged into it, and your phone can then access the wireless network that's been created.
This is certainly possible with Windoze 7 and I would be surprised if it wasn't possible with Vista or even XP. A quick Google search of "Windows <insert your version of Windows here> WiFi connection sharing" yields plenty of results.
i use this, and it works most of the time! Cant really find why it doesnt work somethimes when i try. But havent used it that much:

This is an app that sends the internet of the pc to your phone, you do need root though!
I just keep it on my sdcard, so i can use it on every pc

This is defo your best bet, as I would bet the USB modem would need more power than the phone can give, so you would need to use a powered hub or a splitter, you would also need drivers (kernel modules) for the data modem built into the kernel, if there even are linux drivers for it, and then all the userspace modem tools which would need porting to android, and in the end you would still more than likely need an external power supply for the modem.
tl;dr Not likely to happen at the current time due to technical hurdles.
I realise this is a bit of a double post, but I can't change the title of the last one and this seems more appropriate...
I'm having problems with my Android TV box. It has ethernet built in and that works just fine, except certain programs such as iPlayer which have been designed to only work on wifi (as BBC don't want 3G use of iPlayer).
Basically it's specifically looking for wifi rather than just a broadband (non-cellular) connection so it just point blank doesn't work. The device is not rootable. Is there anything that can be done to make apps see ethernet as equivalent to wifi?
Several other apps have this problem too and explicitly state you may only use wifi for this data connection, so it's definitely the root of the issue.
Cheers
Ask the manufacturer how to "spoof" the Ethernet into Wi-Fi
Hey,
As we have wifi direct in our phones, i would like to ask if someone knows how to use it with our PC's or notebooks? I have Windows 7 x64 and i know that i could use Samsung Kies Air or smthing like that (e.g. ftp server) but it's not to easy to use and fast. I often need to send 1 small file from or on smartphone and it seams easy with it, but i can't use it anyway. I heared some rummors that Windows 8 will have WiFi Direct support, but i can't believe that there is no support from even 3rd party aplications on this very popular system.
So... anyone know any solutions on how to use it? Since we have it, it would be nice to use it sometimes
Why you don't try with airdroid?
Sent from SGSII//CM9 >>xBlackDroid<<
AFAIK it works just like Kies Air - using wireless router to connect pc with phone and it's not what i'm looking for. It seams better app that Kies Air - ok, but still uses similiar ideas like many other apps even on phones that does not have Wifi Direct. It gives you almost same feature for file transfer as Wifi direct but it's not that. I could use it, but i want to try this standard and i'm looking for any way to do it, not any workarounds for that - i already know them
As for my notebook wlan card - it's Atheros 928X and i found somewhere that it does support Wifi Direct with new drivers (which i have).
I would test it on Windows 8 R.P. but it seams pointless just to test it. I'd like to use it on my Win7
As for reason - it looks just easier to use becose i don't have to use both device when i want to transfer file - I just click in "share" -> via WiFi and it's done (or turn WifiD. on before).
Did u try AirDroid ??
you can use wifi direct and adhoc on one soluution from intel.
it is baed on intel's wifi cards - more ifo here: http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wtech/imwd/sb/CS-033754.htm?wapkw=wifi+direct
you need to instal itnels wifi managemen sw + wifi dashboard. if not you wont be able to use wifi direct.
it is working as adhoc really nice but I was not able to send wifi direct any files even it did connect properrly. looks like kind of bug
using gsg2 with neatrom
Try using Airdroid
WiFi Direct is designed for both devices to directly connect to each other with their built in WiFi network adapters. I don't think it works if one of them is a PC on a LAN with an access point.
Use WiFi File Explorer.
Es file explorer, set your pc in lan settings.
Share folders on Pc, then access them with es file explorer

Question: USB Wifi - how do you get it to work??
=================================================
I just tried the newest Android RemixOS as of Jan 25 2017. I read some of what you all have here and I was very impressed with your knowledge, however I have no idea what some of this stuff means even though I can regedit.exe and toss code around in C# and VB.NET and use Framework like a boss. Meaning, if I had the exact steps to fix my problem that would be GREAT!
* My problem, I only have a USB Wifi, my USB keboard and mouse work fine but RemixOS Marshmello will not work together. It just shows the Wifi off and when I click the toggle button to turn it on it just scans. Advanced under Wifi has nothing I can work with.
I heard that the problem -used- to be that USB was not supported at all but my keyboard and mouse work. So is there anything I can do to make the USB Wifi work, I have no internal Wifi for this computer -or- is that the best solution, just get an internal Wifi board that supports 2.4Ghz (which I read somewhere was the other problem, only 2.4Ghz is supported). Also I have no access to my Landlords Wifi so I am unable to play around with it.
Follow up Question: What is rooting and why is it better and why doesn't RemixOS just make everything rooted (since it sounds better and everyone wants RemixOs this way)? Rooted sounds to me like its, "written in stone" but it sounds like it makes it so people can get access to things?
** I already installed RemixOS Jan 2017 version if I have to Root do I uninstall RemixOS first, if so how do you install it from your PC if it made your system into a dual boot?
** Or do you all mean uninstall RemixOS then edit the ISO and put the mentioned code for init() into the init.sh file? is that the Trick?
*** Additionally for anyone that doesn't understand what I said above cuz I am sure I am clear as Mud on my questions. My Wifi is a stick, that is attached to a USB cord that then goes into the Back of my computer into a USB 3.0 port. I have no internal Wifi board and the motherboard is 6 years old and doesn't have much integreated into it except sound, maybe grafx VGA but I installed a RX 780 for a good graphics card.
*** I also forgot to mention it dual boots just fine, just no internet. Thx!
same here, im using TL-WN723N_V3 and wifi always keep searching.

Generally, wifi adapter connected using USB should work. It maybe a problem with particular adapter type not having driver in kernel or something like that. You can check output of "dmesg" command if it says something about the adapter. For example I'm using quite cheap usb wifi adapter Tenda (W311U+) and it works directly without any intervention.
