my media files gets erased? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an international s3.
suddenly my phone deleted by itself everything on my internal storage ONLY, such as my entire photos, sounds recordings, nandroid backups. etc. basically media files of any type. my apps, call log and sms records still fine.
i use imperium rom v 13.6 for a long time, and never had problems. so it's not the rom.
i completely formatted my internal storage. and installed the rom. but the problem still exists. does anyone know what could be the problem? im afraid it's an hardware problem.... how can i make sure . thanks in advance.

Try flashing full stock firmware with Odin, if still the same then search for emmc memory tester thread in general forum.

thanks for your replay. ill try that. and report. btw. is this problem could be related to the sudden death syndrome .. some how?

Yes, it's the same issue (nand memory wear) but not in the vital area that used to cause SDS so that the phone would become a dead, hard brick.

I think i have a similar problem. When i took my S3 out of my pocket this morning it had made a complete factory reset by itself.
Was working properly before.
What I am curious about is, that there is some data left on the phone(some pictures) and my settings are mostly intact but otherwise the playstore-services are missing i think. I installed the playstore.apk but when i open it it simply says: No Connection. And if I view my apps through a browser it says that they are still installed on my device. Also when i view
the stats for memory usage in the settings, it shows me about 12GB of 16GB are used with 8,2 GB of other data.
That would fit the data i had on my phone before, but when i try to view detailed stats about other data it only shows a few megabyte.
i have an International (GT i9300) Galaxy S3 (16GB) with stock firmware (I9300XXUGNA8) with root and clockworkmod recovery installed. the device was purchased roughly in september 2012.
In the last one or two month i had one or two times the problem with apps deleting itself/playstore still showing the as installed. this could be fixed by deleting the content of the install folder and renaming it, because i couldn't delete the actual folder. And after that you could reinstall the app through playstore and everything worked fine again.
I also used a app called eMMC Check after the device resetted it(got it from outside playstore obviously) that stated that i have an "Insane" chip and let it make a memory test, which said memory is okay.
As far as i read, the insane chip problem was fixed by samsung through firmware updates (4.1.2 and onwards) or am i wrong ?
As of now i'm assuming that my device/the memory is broken on hardware level and i need a new device or mainboard-replace.
Maybe you can give me some information on that. I hope i provided enough detail. Thanks.

pommeseffe
in my case as i said. its the media files that affected by this, the apps stay the same only certain updates like language packs or some other data in games gets deleted. other than that everything is fine.
please let me know if the solutions mentioned above. helped you too in your case.

could not launch the request activity

Hi everyone. My problem seems common but I couldn't find anyway a solution (except the drastic one).
Well without any reason using my mobile, I've found many, almost all the apps into my sd not working anymore.
I can't launch them and I receive this message: "could not launch the request activity" and I can't find them on my appdrawer.
What's happaning here?
I have a rooted Samsung GS 2.3, tried changing touchwiz and launcherpro, but nothing happened...
Any suggestion? Thanks
It sounds like your sd card is at fault. You need to format. Yes, you will loose everything, but this should fix the problem. If you are root, may try titanium backup, to backup the apps and their data.
thanks
thanks, of course formatting is always the best solution but what do you think if first I reinstall just the missing apps? ..or it's not suggested because it will happen again. (hope it's just a software problem)
You aren't moving the folders are you? May try downloading the stuff to the internal memory.

Well the only thing I did was moving the apps to sd with android, but long time before this disaster.
This is really annoying, really.
I would not move program/app folders. That is a disaster just waiting to happen.

[Q] Defragmentation for GS2

Hey guys,
My phone was quite fast and responsive when i first bought it. But now aftre 9 months of use i have found that it has slowed down. I shifted from GB to ICS but that hasnt made any difference. The load up of contacts takes especially long.
I was woundering if like in computers we defragment the HD do we need to do the same on phones ocasionaly.
Please let me know if there are apps for this or any solutions.
If u do this u can break ur phone
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
if your device has become slow, you might want to think about performing a wipe / factory reset every once in a while. also, delete contents from your sd card, apart from music, videos and pictures.
defragmenting from a pc won't help, but also won't break your phone.
The filesystem that Android uses doesn't fragment like Windows' one does, therefore defragmentation isn't possible. You could try clearing up some space though. E.g. deleting apps, music, photos etc.

only half true. sure, the filesystem on the system partitions can not be defragmented, but they are not directly accessible from a windows pc anyways, i believe the op was talking about /sdcard/ and the external_sd/ or /emmc/, which usually are formatted in fat32 and can be defragmented. if he copied several things simultaneously, it might even be fragmented.
Check the free space available on the internal sdcard - my Wife's GSII had a similar problem where it would almost grind to a halt. It turned out the sdcard was full, and transferring the photos/videos off the 'phone returned performance to normal.
Thnks all. I think they are good suggetions and i will try them out and let you know the result.

Files keep disapearing from microSD card after rebooting phone

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum as it could be either a problem with the phone itself or with the SD card.
Sometimes when I reboot my phone about 50mb-2gb of music disappears from my external MicroSD card (class 10 SanDisk). As far as I can tell its always entire folders that disappear, never individual files. It happens quite frequently (probably 1 in 3 reboots) and its extremely frustrating.
I removed the card from my phone and put it in my PC to perform a disk check (no errors found) and format it but the problem persisted.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this and how to fix it?
You mean the files really gone, not even visible with PC?

Yep, the files get completely deleted, I can't even see them when viewing the contents of the card on my PC.
Suggestion: If you have another sd card, try testing it. Then you will know whether is the card problem or the phone problem.

Okay so I tried testing the issue with an old 16gb class 2 Sandisk I had laying around (the one I'm currently having the issue with is 64gb). I rebooted the phone about six or seven times but I wasn't able to replcate the problem. The thing is I can't seem to trigger the problem again on my 64gb card even after rebooting about 10 times. So I'm geussing there's somrthing elese I've be doing in addition to rebooting the phone that has been causing the files to delete themselves. Any idea what that might be?
I guess all I can do now is just continue to use the phone normally, keep a close eye on what I'm doing and wait for the problem to arise again.
In the meantime here are few additional details:
The card is about 30gb full but its only ever about 2gb or less that go missing.
I was wrong about individual files being immune from deletion. about 90% of the songs in my GTA Vice City soundtrack disappeared (among other things). The weird thing is, is that when individual files are effected, they don't outright disappear from the card like folders do. The files are there but they're like ghost files or something, they just sort of get reduced dramatically in size and refuse to work. Its like what you'd have if you downloaded an album through a torrent but stopped the download around 10%, the files are visible, just incomplete.
While many things seem to disappear randomly, there also a bit a pattern. For example, my Elvis Costello, Elvis Presley and Rolling Stones folders all disappeared at once like three times in a row(maybe every time, I'm not quite sure). Not sure what's going on with that.
Don't know what is going on with your sd card. Anyway, glad that the problem somehow gone. Enjoy your phone and keep monitoring the sd card.

ARGHHH! It just happened again, all but one of the files in a folder somehow to reduced to 0.00kb. I'm just taking a wild guess here, could this have something to do with editing id3 tags in n7player? I think that's something most of the files have in common...
Could be. Try uninstall it or any apps you think may be related.

I tested this theory by editing various tags in n7player, rebooting, checking the available space on the SD card and repeating the process several times. Files disappeared about 3 in every 5 reboots so I think its safe to conclude that n7player was causing the problem. I didn't want to stop using n7player completely as it is by far my favorite music app, so now when I need to edit tags directly from phone I use ID3Fixer (but I mainly stick to editing files on my PC prior to transferring them just to be on the safe side). After a few days of normal usage, no files have disappeared.

[Q] Low on memory

For the second time in just a few months I have a notice: "storage space running out of memore".
I have just 99 MB free.
I've deleted even apps that I want but can't seem to find what is using up all the memory.
Internal memory fine, SD fine.
I've moved what ever I can to SD.
My phone: GT -I9100
Android 4.1.2 "up to date"
I really don't want to do a factory reset again and again every few months.
Loking for advice and help.
Thanks,

When you say delete cache, do you mean individually in each program or is there a way to do a major cache delete somewhere else.

Also go to Settings and check under the storage part what is taken up space, in my SII it was a lot of garbage under DCIM, the photos are stored on the SD card but "small copies" (do not recall what they are called) filled up nearly a GB on my unit. I have a lot of photos on Dropbox etc that are shown on the SII.

I've had my phone I think 3 years. SG II was their newest phone at the time.
I never had this problem till maybe a year ago and not this week.
Thanks again for the "delete" it really seems to have solved the problem.
Last time I couldn't find anyone who could help and went the complete factory reset route.
This is obviously so much better.

It really was a rhetorical question. I didn't want to know how long you've had your phone. I was pointing out that those logs have built up over that time, 3 years, so it's unlikely that they'll build up to that degree for another 3 years. So you don't need to apply this fix often, maybe once a year or so.
A lot of people are suffering a lack of space on their Samsung phones needlessly, as I did for at least 6 months, through not knowing about this fix. If you find someone else in the same situation, maybe you can help them out.

I didn't get the previous update so I went from 4.3 to 4.4 straight to the 757 build.
A problem I have on 757 is that it when I use the wireless headset which is supplied and it's connected and press play it just plays in speakermode and have to enable disable bluetooth and/or throw to connect again but it's irritating.
Another problem I found is that the Google Speech (extra button on your keyboard) doesn't appear to be working anymore, it doesn't pick up anything at all.
After the update my 32gb Micro-SD seems to be read-only, I can't copy/paste anything there while in Windows I can (so it's not the micro-sd card), I did a format of the whole SD card anyway, tried it with fat32, ntfs, exfat but all the same, anyone else got issue's with that?
I do like that you can enable 16 toggles and they have extra functionality like on Samsung, when you keep pressing WIFI you can enter the wifi settings from there. And swiping 2 fingers down from the top menu bar makes you go straight to the quicksettings.
I wish the keyboard had this option to separate words though, the spacebar is too small, so you just keep putting ... between the words instead of zero's, Samsung's keyboard is a bit smarter to identify the right words (even glued together) and spaces.
Overall it's faster then 4.2 and 4.3 and a big improvement over the battery (but it needs like 1 or 2 complete battery cycles to fully use that.

My best guess was that your sd card is corrupt. Try to format it with your PC and start clean. That should fix it.
Some battery drain occured with me yesterday (about a day after updating to 757). It was draining like hell, like 20% after only 9 hours since unplugged and about 3 hour of screen time. but nothing crazy on the battery usage graph. So i was suspicious about hidden wakelock somewhere inside. So like a dumb boy, i just opened up one by one of the installed apps. So it was found that somehow Waze and Line app will FC on open. I decided to erase data on Waze and uninstall Line and voila no more battery drain after the next charge! Turns out that i have restored both with Helium and never tested them after restoration.
Moral of the story is, don't do a sloppy restore and backup after clean install. Better for you to find app with cloud save or at least local backup support and clean install the app and then restore the data by per app.
Sent from my C6802 using xda app-developers app
No the SD card isn't corrupt. Google did this in the Kit Kat update. SD cards cannot be written into by third party apps. Only sony apps can write into it like "File Commander". This is to improve security as they said, but it's proving to be more of a problem than a security enhancement -_-

That's not a bug. It's a "feature" in KitKat, and it's entirely Google's idea. You can no longer move, copy or delete your own files on SD cards. A new SD card permission is in place, so apps (Facebook, Spotify, games etc.) can save files to it, but you can't manually do it unless you root and run SDFix (you can uninstall it after you're done), or you'll have to use the File Commander app, or whatever it's called, which came with the update.

I guess you'll have to manually check every file on there. It could be as simple as a corrupt photo, so move everything from your SD to your computer and move one and one file (or folder if you're certain that it doesn't contain a corrupt file) at a time.
You have any idea why mine isn't fixed? I'm on 757 too.
FYI: my update crashed with a "software failed to update" and I had to perform wipes using the SUS.

Go to Settings -> Wifi -> Advanced -> Uncheck "Scanning always Available"
Plus, if you rely on High Accuracy mode and using it for Waze/Maps/Any other Geotag enabled apps, don't you ever turn off Location after exiting the app. Just leave the Location on. It won't wakelock your device for GPS signal. Otherwise the app will show you that it eats battery in battery usage because it awaits for the GPS to be turned on and the only Solution is to restart the phone.
