After almost a year of inputting various *# and #* codes, I finally got my i717 to work on T-Mobile LTE (southside of greater Chicagoland).
This is on stock ATT JB rom and modem. On a good day I will get over 20Mbps down and 8-10Mbps up. epc.tmobile apn worked best at first, but after about a day or so, fast.tmobile apn setting did about the same. Service mode is set to Automatic and the setting in Device Info *#*#4636#*#* was set to LTE/GSM/WCDMA.
I thought all was fine until I would leave an LTE area and go into a normally (for me) 4g area
What is happening now is that I lose my LTE and go straight into EDGE. It is almost like my regular 4g is gone in areas where it used to be pretty good
Before LTE working, I was getting pretty good 4g (between 4-9Mbps down and about 1 up). This was using the same stock ATT JB rom, but with T-Mobile Blaze modem. Very seldom, like almost never, would I see EDGE. To get this I would have to go into service mode *#2263# and select WCDMA as my band preference.
If I try to use the Blaze modem, I cannot get the phone to stay in the LTE/GSM/WCDMA setting.
In a nutshell, why am I going to EDGE instead of 4g when I leave LTE?
If it matters, I am on the 5G / 100 minute $30 prepaid plan
TIA
Pretty common problem with the JB modem. You pull LTE or you pull E. For me, the best modem is UCMB4. It's an ICS modem, though, so I'm not sure how it'll work on jellybean. But you may give it a try. I pull the best speeds -- by far -- with it, and I pull consistent LTE. With the different ported modems I would have calls not go through sometimes -- weird -- and just "okay" speeds. With the ucmb4 I get solid all-around service.
I've gone from TMobile LTE to regular 4g on my mostly stock Note in Chicago. No AWS mod, no code messin, no nothin.
ATT modems will only work with tmobile refarmed 1900mhz areas. Your blaze modem is set to 1700mhz frequency band instead of 1900mhz. Thats why it works better.
Tmobile has a lot of dead areas on regular 4g with the LTE capable modem. But that's the tradeoff. Lte and refarmed 1900mhz band or just regular old 4g hspa.
no phone on Tmo 4g LTE in STL
Hey guys,
I've recently run into a problem with my unlocked i717 on TMO. It runs Android 4.1.2 (AT&T update flashed to the phone) but every since TMO rolled out their LTE in my area I get 4G LTE signals (1 or 2 bars mostly, but at times 3-4 bars) and I can send texts and data, but it cancels both incoming and outgoing phone calls.? What can I do to correct this? TMO's solution is to buy the N2 or wait til Nov for the N3. Any ideas?
Thanks...

Make sure your using the UCMD3 modem for JB. Then type *#2263# into dialer and try to set to automatic*.
Someone had this similiar problem the other day.

Thanks for all the comments. Glad to hear it is common problem and not just me going nuts.
I still like my i717, but seem to spend more and more time screwing around with it to get it to work right. Good excuse to get a Note 3 I guess
Just picked up a new G3 and new service provider in Verizon. Is it common to be stuck on 3G majority of the time in a decent size city? It sometimes in a blue moon switches to 4GLTE, but won't stay long.
I am with tmobile currently as well as that is my main carrier, but needed good coverage in the bad areas of Pennsylvania. Have awesome coverage where I live with tmobile, however with Verizon not so much.
Is it common?
I guess I have 14 days to decide. Any feedback greatly appreciated,

take it back... verizon locks everything down tmo allows you to be free .
sorry i didn't actually help you in regards to your question.
The only time I see myself switch to 3g is where I have crappy service at my parent's place. Otherwise I don't have that issue..
However I'm also not in Pennsylvania so someone else may need to comment on that bit.
Perhaps they're doing tower upgrades over there?
The G3 gets really good reception, on par or better than the Motorola phones which are known to have excellent reception. I'd give it a day or so to settle along with a few restarts to see if you can grab an updated PRL. Outside of that Verizon may not be great in your area. I have to go outside to get a decent 4G signal, inside it's 3G most of the time.
That's the thing, I still have my T-Mobile phone. I actually live in Ohio, however work in PA and a little of West Virginia where I get no signal and can only make emergency calls. When in Ohio, where I live I get amazing 4G signal on lte. 40 down and 10 up to where on Verizon where I live I get 7 down and barely 1 up. It's crazy... Then again I am on 3G most of the time.
So wifi it goes....
Also is it normal to be on wifi and next to it the 4G/3G signal shows. I only have a gig of data is why I ask. Don't want unwanted charges on my bill.
T-Mobile g Flex unfortunately will still be my main phone. Unlimited everything.

Yep that's normal, nothing to worry about there
Ok, thanks. Just worried as T-Mobile phone goes straight to wifi symbol only.
You could try switching airplane mode on and then back off

I did this and at 1st it gave me full bars. I did a reset for some reason and when it came back it's back to 1 bar. Weird....So does this mean I'll stay on 4G and won't pan back to 3G, if so might need to be on global in order to get signal in bad areas.
Thanks though, see what happens.
Things to try:
Power off take out the sim, power back on without sim, power off and put sim back in.
Call Verizon and have then send an update to your sim card.
Factory reset your device
Get a new sim card

It's a new phone and I would have to already take put the SIM. I mean I will as I dont get why I am constantly on 3G. Thought Verizon was good at penetrating buildings for 4G.
Not to mention even when I am on 4G it's no where near the speeds my tmobile phone gets.
Might have to chalk it up to so many people on big red....I guess as long as I get signal in the boonies I'll be okay. Just a little disappointed.
Thanks for the help.
I had this same issue and switching it from Global to CDMA/LTE fixed it for me. I've read that it shouldn't matter if it's on Global.... But I clearly saw the difference.
This G3 gets the same or better reception that my S4 does. I'm happy with it

You should be on 4G, if it is available in your area. Signal strength is the main reason it'll drop to 3G, but that's only when your 4G signal drops above -100 dBm. Somewhere around the -115 is where mine decides it's better to switch to 3G. I even get some 1X's here at my desk, but I've got a crappy signal at my desk. If you're on 3G most of the time, then there's a problem. As stated earlier, take the following steps:
FDR (Factory Data Reset.) You'll lose everything, so back it up.
Go into the VZW store and tell them you want another SIM card. (Try not to handle it with your fingers and tell them not to handle it with theirs either.)
Replacement phone is the only other alternative.
If none of the above works, then you probably do need to switch back to T-Mobile. Just remember, you only have 14 days to figure this out!
Have you looked at a coverage map? Verizon does have excellent coverage but all carriers have holes

T-Mobile's version comes factory unlocked. It already has the TWRP recovery.
OTOH, T-Mobile's version is SIM locked and Verizon's isn't, so Verizon's version is more free if you ever need to travel internationally.

Make sure you have the LTE apns for T-Mobile. If that doesn't work. Maybe you live in an area where the T-Mobile bands supported by the Verizon G3 doesn't exist
I get LTE in the RDU area of NC, or H, but down east along the coast I pretty much only get EDGE. Same thing though on my One Plus One, So it's just T-Mobile.

I don't know if it has anything to do with cloadyfa's 4.4.2 international Rom, but I had multiple problems with running my phone on ATT (no mms while connected to Wi-Fi, constant data/connection loss resulting in missed/late texts and missed calls as well.) Anyway, long story short, I never got lte anywhere in my small town even tho my other 2 phones got lte just fine. After flashing his ROM, I never have data, mms or call problems. It honestly feels like this phone was made for ATT now. Data connected as soon as the phone booted too. No need for manual apn input!
I have a VZW G3 (currently on Jasmine 7.0 Lollipop) and I am looking to switch to T-Mobile to get their 2 line for $100 deal. I have verified in the store that my phone will work on the T-Mobile network. My question is has anyone (using a G3 on T-Mobile) had any luck with getting the Wifi Calling and texting working? I talked with online support and they said it should work but the store employees said I would need a T-Mobile device for this to work.
Online support was wrong, store employees are correct.
Only if you have a T-mobile G3 can you use their special Wifi Calling. The vs985 does not support it.
Alternatively, you can use the Hangouts dialer for wifi calling for free. I forward all my phone numbers into my Google Voice number, so all my phones ring if any of my numbers are called.
Also, I use almost no voice minutes anymore at all on any carrier since I have gotten all my contacts to switch to dialing my Google number.

I wonder if you can tell us the radio baseband version currently working on your vs985 and giving you LTE on T-Mobile ?
There have been reports that the original v10b and the v11c radios allow LTEon non-Verizon carriers, but that the v12b and higher radios (including the current v23c one) do not.

Well I switched to T-Mobile and I had everything working running v23c radio (I think). My baseband is: VS985-MPSS.DI.2.0.1.c1.13-00053-M8974AAAAANPZM-1. My phone would switch from 3G to H and back often.
According to T-Mobile coverage map I have 4G at my house but I currently have a E symbol. Either their map is incorrect or something is not working quite right.

Thanks! I eventually figured it out on my own. I downgraded to 12b because of other Lollipop issues and my data is inconsistent. At work my Data is going from H to 4G LTE to 3G to E and I can hardly do anything data0wise on my phone. My coworkers T-Mobile Nexus 6 works great. Anyone know of anything I can try, short of getting a T-Mobile phone?
You might be in a T-Mobile band 2 LTE area while at work. The N6 is one of the only phones currently available that supports band 2 LTE, your vs985 doesn't and can't. Even the T-Mobile G3 variant won't.
If you can just barely reach a band4 T-Mobile tower at work, that would explain your LTE being intermittent. Might just be that T-Mobile LTE is on band 2 or, um, band 21 (?) in that area, neither of which are vs985 bands.

Were you receiving a good LTE coverage at your work before you updated your phone to Lollipop? I see too many complaints and issues with Lollipop so I restrained from upgrading from my kitkat with 12b.

Download LTE Discovery from Play Store and run it to see what LTE band you are connecting to. It also helps your phone to connect to LTE faster. T-mobile main LTE band is 4, and it is supported by VS985. It is normal to have 1 to 2 bars on 4G LTE, and if I am in the middle of the building, sometimes it will go down to H or E. It is not the fault of your phone. T-mobile is just not known for great coverage.
Hello everyone,
First post on XDA woo!
Anyway. I've been with android for since the Galaxy Nexus and continued using the nexus line up until the Nexus 5. Recently I got bored of stock android so I wanted to try out the LG G3. I'm currently on T-Mobile and was able to get a Verizon LG G3 basically for free. Popped my SIM card in, set up a T-Mobile APN. It worked fine. However. I have NO signal almost anywhere I am at all times (school, home, when I'm out and about). Could this be because of my APN? Is it a faulty phone? Because I'm using t-mobile on a Verizon phone?
Thanks in advance guys!

Welcome to the XDA forums!
Actually your screenshot is showing only one bar of signal
What do you have the "Network Mode" set to? (Under the "System Select" settings.)
The 3 options are Global, LTE/CDMA, and LTE/GSM/UMTS.
For T-Mobile you probably need the LTE/GSM/UMTS mode.
Here is a thread where someone else set up their VS985 on T-Mo's network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/factory-unlocked-lte-t-mobile-t2828543
Thanks for the warm welcome!
I checked my mobile settings and it was set to 'Global'. However when I tried switching it to either of the other two, options I get this error message (shown in the picture below).
I read the thread you posted. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything to help my specific case. I did find out that this phone reads a Band 4 LTE from T-Mobile. I went online and it seems that my area doesn't get Band 4 coverage for LTE. However even on my Nexus 5 I never got LTE because I think my data plan only, covered up to HSPA. Could this be a problem?
Thanks for the help.

I use a VS985 on T-mobile, so I would offer my 2 cents. The only LTE band it supports for T-mobile is band 4, so if it is not offered in your area, you won't get LTE, but you can still get H, which is still quite fast. Your APN setting is correct. The signal bar for T-mobile is always low, usually 1-2 bars, but the LTE does not seem to be affected by it. I am in the Bay Area, and I typically get around 25Mbps and can get up to 57Mbps when at late night. I think it has to do with T-mobile network than the phone. In fact, I get slightly better signal on G3 than my Nexus 5.
Hmm. I am out of ideas. I mean, my Nexus 5 got great signal throughout my daily routine. Now the LG G3, with the same SIM card and data plan, gets NO signal. Not just BAD signal. I mean NONE. I'm starting to think it may be a faulty hardware problem? I might try and return it and try my luck with another phone. What do you guys think?

I noticed a drop in signal strength when I flashed to Lollipop... Long story short I hated Lollipop and with the radio not as good just Flash back to 10B and setting it up now and will leave it there. I never had any issues with 10B
Someone here on XDA mentioned that the Nexus5 supports band 2 LTE, which T-Mobile uses increasingly as it "'re-farms" it's old gprs towers. I know the G3 doesn't, and I am pretty sure the Nexus5 doesn't either, but if the other poster was correct that could explain your observations.

I have Nexus 5 too, and that phone supports every band in the US including LTE band 2. T-mobile main LTE band is 4 but in some areas they use band 2, which is not support by G3. If you still have your Nexus 5, install LTE Discovery from Play store and you can check which LTE band you are on. If band 2, then you will need to sell your G3. Or I can sell my Nexus 5 to you, haha.
One more thing, I was playing around the Network mode on my G3, while it makes no difference in LTE reception, "LTE/GSM/UMTS" gives better 3G reception, so that is the mode you want your G3 to stay at.
Alright. So I tried the 'LTE Discovery' app. Unfortunately I couldn't learn anything as I don't actually recall ever getting LTE in my area (except at my fathers workplace a good ways a way. Probably since there is a cell tower right next door. Haha) Anyway. I'm thinking that the band receptors are my problem. I'm considering maybe returning this Verizon G3 and buying the T-Mobile G3 variant instead. Do you guys think I'll see any improvement?
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
Not if you are in a T-Mobile band2 LTE area. Even the T-Mobile G3 does not support band2 LTE. No LG G3 does.
It does support the high band, band21 I think, which is still more common for T-Mobile than band2. The vs985 doesn't support T-Mobile high band LTE. So, getting the T-Mobile G3 might help. Just remember that higher frequency bands tend to not penetrate buildings as well as lower frequency bands.
I looked at that LTE Discovery App... I would not leave that on your phone. It's a data miner.
Needs access to...
Device and App history
Location
Phone
Photos / media / files
Device ID and call info
Really all that. I don't think so. I would not install it at all. Just saying.
Some if these apps are crazy for what they want access to. I stay away from them.
