Lag a software problem? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I usually do not root my tablets, but I am thinking about rooting my nexus 9. I really enjoy nexus products and I love htc products so I thought the Nexus 9 would be great, but the lag that this tablet has is horrible. I read that it might be hardware issue, since the processor uses denver, but I also heard it might be software related. So I want to ask if the guys who have rooted their tablet experienced less lag or not? If you happen to experience less lag then I would be more inclined to root the tablet. Thanks.

Rooting is not going to change wether it lags or not.

OK maybe I should have been more clear... I want to know if some people who had rooted and flashed a custom aosp room noticed less lag or not... Is the lag driven from a software issue or because of the new architecture of the processor?

Ok, it helps to be clear. Rooting and flashing are two different things. You can flash a rom without rooting. I'm on stock and have not noticed any significant lag. When you have lag check in developer options, process stats. See where your memory is. If it's in critical clear out open tabs.

OK that does make sense and I'll keep an eye on that, but when I checked now, my memory is in normal condition... However, it is on the closer side of critical though, so that might explain that I experience lag when I open a bigger app... I'm not completely used to the way lollipop multitask

This has got to be the worst device I have had for lag issues, even trying to get back to the home screen can take 10-15 seconds.

Okay, I guess here's something wrong with your device. My N9 never takes this much time to return to the home screen. Occasionally there are some short breaks when returning to the home screen of approximately 2 - 3 seconds...

Yeah that don't sound right Currently mine lag for 2 seconds the most... I just feel like it should not lag... It does seem however that putting a custom rom helps a little... Just my two sense

I have a lot installed on my nexus 9 but my nexus 6 has the same apps and even more installed. The Nexus 6 is instant and buttery smooth. My nexus 9 also can take a while to screen rotate.

The Nvidia chipset is very driver dependent, therefore software dependent. Read the Anandtech reiew article and it will clarify why there are short pauses/freezes sometimes with the N9.

Let's hope 5.1 fixes this...

you want nasty lag, goto htc's N9 web page.. I've not seen a poorly coded webpage with that type of lag in ages.
I know, its not the lag you are talking about , but I had to say something about it someplace ?

I don't notice lag on my N9, but I just came from using my N7 2012. Its horrible, so my 9 seems supercharged. I do have freeze ups in Chrome occasionally, but that's about it. I must not max out my memory enough.

Wiping the cache seemed to help a little. I'm going to sell my Nexus 9. For a flagship reference there shouldn't be any lag. I'm sticking to Qualcomm chip set for now.

I have never rooted my N9 and got my device in Nov. I'm running the latest 5.01 and started to notice lag creeping in every 30 - 45 seconds (for no apparent reason). It wasn't very noticeable surfing the web or navigating the tablet but became very apparent playing games. Power cycling the device did nothing.. I was hoping the 5.1 update would solve the problem but grew too impatient waiting for it to arrive so I decided to flash the stock 5.01 image onto my device (from google site). All the lag is gone now, games that were previously unplayable due to the lag are now buttery smooth again. Not sure what caused the lag to begin with but stock 5.01 image reflashing solved my problems.

Yeah a few people has mentioned that flashing the stock image helped out quit a bit, but I'm running a rooted version of 5.1 and it's running great... Which I think means it's the memory leak causing the issue, and even though there is still a memory leak on 5.1 it's much better...
Sent from my LG-D850 using XDA Free mobile app

In my case I don't think it was the memory leak issue causing the lag. If that was the case then power cycling the device would have resolved the issue momentarily. But it did not. The lag was consistently present regardless of the numbers of power cycles and clearing of all "recent apps".
I can understand the frustration some have voiced in the forums making it sound like the N9 is plagued with issues. Re-flashing stock 5.01and bringing back my tablet to the same state (reinstalled all apps again) it was in solved my problems. Hopefully the 5.1 OTA fixes whatever lag has been introduced with previous updates.

[Q] S3 unlock lag

Hi guys, I'm running the latest version of Slim Bean with stock modem XXLE8 and whatever kernel comes with Slim. I've noticed that there is a 1.5-2 second delay upon hitting the power or home button to the screen turning on and being ready to use. It's pretty annoying as you can imagine, I've actually figured out what the problem is, my phone is going to deep sleep too early and is taking up to 2 seconds to wake up, I wouldn't mind this if the phone has been left alone for 2 hours or so, but if I leave my phone for 5 minutes I shouldn't have to wait 2 seconds to unlock it. I came to this conclusion by using the app softlocker from the market, which disables sleep, and the lockscreen is perfectly fine with no lag, so should I try a new modem or a new kernel or is there something else I have to try to solve this issue?
There are already some discussions about that problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687328
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636680
It is a very annoying problem and I don't really understand how a top range device like the Galaxy S3 has such a problem.
I was hopping that the official Jelly Bean update would fix it... If it does not, I will contact Samsung (as should everyone who is annoyed by the wake up lag).

I've read both but neither seem to provide much of a solution. It is pretty ridiculous a phone like the S3 with such powerful hardware suffers from unlock lag. My HTC Desire Z used to unlock instantly... Kinda disappointing.
I'm totally annoyed because of this problem, too.
isn't there a kernel or something where this doesnt happen??

Hmmmmm I might flash a stock rom and check it out because I don't remember it happening when I was running stock, tho that was for a grand total of 3 days lol.
This has always been a particular issue surrounding the Android software in terms of the optimisation of the OS...Keep in mind that kernels and ROMs with plently of adjustment may also mean plenty of variables, as small settings adjustments may alter and cause detrimental lags and issues as such. I use Phenomenal which is pretty good as there is little adjustments, disabled logs and undervolted...very good battery and response...I would recommend looking at something like that...unfortunately, should you wish not to root your device and keep it as standard, you may look at if there is an app that might be causing your the issue...but please note that slow unlocking/wake is because the device is in deep sleep.

sure, but i own quite a view other android phones and none behaves like the s3, not even the superlow-budget htc one v

theres a app called softlocker, but with that the cpu never gets to deepsleep, my s3 gets warm and the battery drains badly

Xperia tablet S shuts down watching HD movie

I have experienced the tablet shutting down when I am watching a HD video on Youtube or locally from the device. It does not always happen but what is consistent is it always happens when the video begins to drop pixels. For whatever reason If the video begins to degrade, the application locks up and the tablet shuts down. Anyone else experiencing this issue and have a fix?
Happens to me only when I'm watching videos on youtube, when I plug my tablet into the tv using the HDMI adaptor, and overnight when I wake up and its turned off. Other than that I don't get any shutdowns from general use at school, on pretty much all day taking notes browsing the web and movies/music.

I too am growing more frustrated. Rather than shutting down, it would be better if the app just crashed. Maybe the problem will be addressed in the JB update.

I wonder when we'll see the JB update! No leaks or any news on that. So much for Sony claiming it will be out shortly after launch. Oh well.
Also waiting patiently on the JB update. Hopefully it ll clear up the worst bugs, and maybe even improve optimization. So far, I get 6 hours of normal web browsing on lowest brightness possible. Seems quite a bit far from what they promise, and also what many reviewers claim. Allthough very mixed opinions on the battery life. Also it takes more than 9 hours to recharge from zero. Sony says 5.. :/ anyone else experience these lack of power management? Think i might go to the shop for a new one, if they agree, that the battery is somehow faulty..

Well guys this is my swan song. After the last couple of shutdown events, I have reluctantly decided to part with my Xperia Tablet S. I have recently received the Nexus 7 and it has been pretty stable. I hope Sony works out the kinks. Good luck to you all.
Happened to me once, maybe twice, but never watching an HD video on youtube. What bothers me most is the underwhelming web browsing. It should be stellar.
SO any ETA on JB maybe skip it and directly go to KLP 4.2??
guess no announcement made yet

Meanwhile, some blogs also got aware of this annoying shutdown bug:

flat.de/news/tablets/2442-sony-xperia-tablet-s-leidet-unter-willkuerliche-shutdowns.html
I also contacted Sony about this, but no clear info from their side. That's pathetic. It's a severe bug which makes the tablet in parts unusuable. For me, it happens not only when playing videos, but also when listening to web radio, using camera, browser or mail.
Has anyone some update on this or Jelly Bean. If this issue is not fixed soon, Sony will have seen the last money from me...
Your not alone it happends most often in browser but can even happen during offline playback.
I think sony has set the energy saving to tight causing tablet to constantly switch energy states constantly playing video's causing corruption when skiping thru video a lot.
Just try play video and keep skipping and reload other video's asswell i can force it to crash sometimes.

I think it's a more general issue, not only related to video playback as my device also shuts down when starting apps like mail or web radio. Maybe power saving / voltage switching of the SOC might be the reason, nevertheless, they should fix this the sooner the better...

Android 4.2.2, did Google finally get it right?

This latest release has me really pleased with my Nexus 10's speed, response, and stability. It appears they got it right for the use of my tablet. :victory: It will be very interesting to see what the priorities and advantages will be going forward with custom ROM and kernel development!

They finally fixed the time bug that caused mine to constantly be behind 10 minutes.
My experience is a little mixed. I play a lot of MC4 without any stutters or lag prior to 4.2.2. But now I am getting constant stutters during multiplayer game play. I found myself going back to 4.2.1 to be able to play my MC4. That was the only issue that I encountered while on 4.2.2.

Since upgrading to 4.2.2, I have not had chrome freeze or the n10 reboot. That's wonderful!!!
I have Battery Monitor Widget Pro running with an alarm set if the battery hits 95d f. Since 4.2.2 I had the alarm go off while charging with the pogo cable and running daydream 'colors' (first time trying daydreams) and again when a 30 minute youtube video playing through hdmi (no charger). The temp went up in less than 5 minutes after the video/animation started. Felt extremely hot around the camera. Never had that happen before, only time the temp went up was after 30 minutes of a graphical game play.
Battery temp is usually around 82, almost never above 90f and certainly not in 5-10 minutes. Gonna keep an eye on it, but it is a new problem for me and related to the video.
After update to 4.2.2 my bettary is bad. :'( on Android 4.2.1 I usually get about 7-8 hours screen on, but on 4.2.2 I get 5-6 hour screen on. But with 4.2.2 my Nexus 10 more fast and smooth

I'm glad 4.2.2 has fixed many of the soft reboot/crashes and things like that but I still feel that the nexus 10 isn't as snappy as it should be. I feel there's still residual lag during transitions and alot of apps don't run well (I think that's more hardware optimization though). The nexus 10 menu's feel a bit slow.
IMO the nexus 4 on stock feels much smoother.
Battery life appears fine and no more random lockups or reboots since the upgrade several days ago....Very happy now!
Thanks for 4.2.2 update. I no longer face hang/auto restart.
Reboots and crashes are gone it seems. Chrome would crash every time I opened it, now it is rock solid. I would also have random reboots at least twice a day. 0 since the update. Bootlog Uptime says 4 days 4 hours.
I still have issues with Wi-Fi though. My University has multiple AP's with the same SSID, and my N10 has issues finding and staying connected to the strongest signal. It will stay connected for maybe 5 minutes, then the Wi-Fi looks like it resets or something. I tried a logcat dump and nothing notable shows anything.

Problem with XBMC is the interface is still sluggish and is a burden to work with. Especially if you setup a samba share and let it import your PC's music and movie collection. XBMC is just way too bloaty for a tablet and is currently the #1 contender in the "How to drain your battery the fastest" department.
Video playback
Hi,
I have flashed the 4.2.2 stock rom and there are some issues, which are not fixed, and some which seem to be new.
- I had one freeze when the tablet was on standby. Only a reboot fixed it and my battery level was about 10% lower as before. Ok, this might be an app, which is misbehaving, I'll monitor it.
- Then I had the first time this time bug, where the time shown is some minutes off sync.
- The worst thing is, that 4.2.2. seems to have broken the video playback in some apps. Playback is stuttering and some frames are dropped. For example in the watchever app, which worked fine in 4.2.1
Google Movies does not seem to be affected.
Anyone else noticing the video playback issue?
Regards,
Goldstein

My brother had the same issue on his Galaxy Tab some time ago... He was running some Cyanogen alpha though and flashing to a newer version resolved the issue. You could investigate whether a fresh flash resolves your issues...
OnTopic: Did not notice much improvement in 4.2.2 (CM10.1) as the device was running without any problems and there was not really something to improve... However benchmarks scores did go up - Antutu went up from ~13500 to ~16500 and Quadrant from 4800 to 4950.

Anyone else having issues with apps randomly restarting, live backgrounds going black, and widgets disapearing for a sec then reloading every time you hit the home button? I run avast for antivirus and anti theft but it keeps shutting down for a few mins then reloading ( or appears to be because it disappears from the app tray and then shows back up a few minutes later) , then I'll be in the middle of a movie on Netflix and boom it restarts the app. Any clue what's going on. BTW I'm rooted with cwm.

Wow.. This is called screen redraw and it is usually something that plagues older devices like the Nexus S that are short on RAM.. Or even newer devices that have so many background instances going the system starts releasing things from memory to free up some RAM for active apps. The homescreen is usually the first to get removed from memory.. Hence, when you go back, it has to "redraw" the homescreen..
For you to get homescreen redraws with the Nexus 10 you have to be running a ludicrous amount of apps all at once.. IMO Avast and Security suites on an Android device are highly unnecessary.

This happens to me on my Nexus 10 after fresh reboots with only going from the browser to the homescreen.
I use my tablet at school so the avast is for the anti theft. looks like it was caused by low mem. Only 100 MBs where avalible restarted going to see if it happens again and what app is having issues. FYI this wasn't the first time I restarted to try and fix the redraw issue.

Home screen redraw happens to me on stock launcher, same as 4.2.1, exiting from browsers. When it happens it is very quick to recover but home screens switching is for a couple of seconds very laggy.
Not a big deal though....
I don't know that it is true, full redraw, as I have the same issue, but the difference between it and normal is redraw is my non widget icons never disappear. From my perspective, it seems that Android 4.2+ has been keen on refreshing widgets every time one goes back to the home screen...where it seems that it simply wants to make sure that it gets the latest data for the widgets. This is anecdotal, of course.

Weird. Haha! I know Note II won't redraw as 2gb RAM was enough to prevent it, but this was different case for 1gb RAM S III.
Glad to report it hasn't redrawn since I restarted it. Netflix was the culprit was using massive amount of ram for some reason.

Weird. Haha! I know Note II won't redraw as 2gb RAM was enough to prevent it, but this was different case for 1gb RAM S III.

Oh I didn't take it into consideration that you may have the international GSIII. I had the Verizon SIII so both my GSIII and now my Note 2 had 2gigs of ram and no redraws.
My Nexus 10 though, redraws like crazy. Hopefully the next update fixes it.
I have definitely had redraw issues since updating to 4.2.2. Also my live wall paper goes black sometimes, usually upon booting up the device. Didn't happen before. Gaming is definitely better on 4.2.2 though

That why I want to replace my International S III, waiting for all manufacturer announcing new phone. Now do targettting on Xperia Z, but will check out what HTC give tonight and coming 14/March on how S IV look like.
Samsung use 1GB for international S III was a big mistake and unfair.

Worst galaxy ever?

On paper this is the best galaxy s ever, we all know that, but I have had this phone for 2 weeks now, and I have had the worst android experience on any phone, I had owned every phone on the galaxy s line since the beginning.
I haven't seen any phone with more lags or software flaws than this one.
To begin, the wakeup lag, sometimes more than 10 secs for the phone to wakeup.
The sd card read/write lag, I change my sd card to a Samsung top notch one, and the lag is still noticeable.
Memory issues, I recreates thisnissues in may ways, open up a game (plants vs zombies 2) play for a couple of mins, lock the phone, and see if you can weke it up.
I noticed a bit more smotthnes after the updatw but still the performance on this phone is just awful.
I hope this is an isolated issue, but I have seen a lot of people complaining about the lag as well.

Forgot to add the connection issues, I use the subway a lot, I have to put the phone in airplane mode and off to get reception back after getting off the subway, otherwise it will not refresh the connection by itself.

Me too. I can't tell you how many problems I've had with this phone. That's just one of the many.
I don't have any of these problems. Maybe its crapware your carrier loaded that's restricting it?

Yes, it might be a "T-Mobile" version problem, I am pretty sure this are software related problems, I would like to see it running on a vanilla version of android, it has to be TouchWiz messing it up, but anyway, this had to be thoroughly tested before releasing it to the public, shame on T-Mobile/Samsung, hope a fix is on the way.

Try using the international stock roms. On the S4, those were MUCH better that the US version roms. I know it requires rooting, but you'll probably be happier and it doesn't really matter if you're outside your return period anyway.
I don't have any of those problems either.

Great phone, no issues, where did you buy yur phones?
I've had the phone for a while now and it hasn't lagged once, the fingerprint scanner works over 90% of the time, and signal is good as well. Yeah, the HR monitor is a total gimmick, but to say this phone is "the worst galaxy" is a bit extreme.
So either I got extremely lucky and got 2 phones without any problems, or some people are getting unlucky with their purchase.

I have a feeling most of it is a T-mobile problem. However, I have a friend on another carrier (I think it's Verizon) and he hates his as well. Tons of problems.
i got no problem with mine S5, just love it.
I have the mysterious lag screen problem on wake!

Sometimes, no matter what I've tried, I'll be using the phone and let the screen turn off, When I push the home button, nothing, the phone is still running but I can't see anything, I try to use the power button and again nothing, I have to pull the battery and restart the phone to get it working. There is a group of people that are experiencing the problem and at first people thought it may be SD card related but it is not conclusive at this point. It will work fine sometimes for days, then all of a sudden pull the above mentioned crap.
Exactly, onlast Sunday every time I locked the screen it would never wakeup, I had to remove the battery like 3 times, it has been OK for the las 2 days though, but this is frustrating, I mean, I haven't even rooted the phone yet, I read that 4.4.3 is on its way, hope that addresses these performance issues.

Yes I agree this phone is very laggy specially the camera they send me a "new" phone and the problem still there, also i usually charge it at night
and this morning the screen was on the boot screen logo i had to remove the battery it sucks
So, I keep researching the reasons of why some of us have this issues, today I went to the "t-mobile my account" app, went to options and deselected all the options (ALL OF THEM), and I notice the fun is a lot smoother, probably the placebo effect, but I will keep trying for a couple of days, if you guys want give it a try.
No issues here, touch wood, using T-Mobile phone on AT&T network.

I've only had the phone for about a week but it's amazing so far, I upgraded from a S2. I play Ingress constantly and lately I've been able to play for 4+ hours at a time before needing to recharge and that's just on the stock battery. I removed all the bloatware I could and turned most everything off just to try and squeeze out every little bit of battery life. The only thing bugging me about the phone so far is that root would void my warranty and I'm a little upset about that but meh, it's not like I ever needed it I'm just a little worried because the phone is so new. I might just wait until the 12 months is up and root the phone then. So far I don't really have a reason to need root but I'm sure that desire will gain in traction as new tools for the device get released. I'm mostly thinking about mods like Cyagenmod, that will be one of the reasons I root and break Knox if I do before the warranty.
