Got my new Xperia S today, and so far loving it.
What are other owners finding the build quality like?
Might seems reasonable, the only niggle I have is the rear battery cover. The top edge is sitting slightly proud, in the centre above the camera lens hole, but it is all flush around all the other 3 sides (and it is correctly fitted in place). Its not massive but noticeable.
This leads to a creaking when you hold the rear. Worried it might get worse over time.
Anyone else's like mine, or are your's flush at the top?
Cheers

Same here, tiny little bit, just doesn't sit as nice as the other sides. Also noticed the black scuffs really easily.
Build quality is excellent..........feels good to hold it..........
My only complaint is the flaps for the USB and hdmi port.
It takes real pain to close them once they are opened.

I agree in 100% Micro usb cover is difficult to close, but after a few try I made the system of closing it and it works fine. Materials and built quolity is outstanding !!! In my opinion Xperia S is best Sony's smartphone after SE made p910i...

When I took the phone out of the box, it was like... holding some kind of expensive new technology. I was thinking myself: "Don't you f...ing drop it".
Coming from a iPhone its slightly disappointing. If the htc one s was out I think I would have gone for that instead knowing the camera would be not as good. The htc is also quite alot slimmer.
I guess the xps has the spec and the htc the look in my opinion.

I personally don't understand the apparent desire for slimmer phones, I've had the HD2 for the last two years and I upgraded to the sensation xe very briefly before I returned it to order the xperia s.
The sensation always felt like it was going to fall out of my hand,I was gripping onto it for dear life lol.
In all of the two years I had my HD2 I never dropped it once or felt like I was going to drop it, and even though I've only held onto a dummy xperia, that also feels comfortable in the hand, so for me it's the xperia build any day.
Still each to their own

I agree entirely. To me, a phone should feel like a phone, not a piece of paper or a heavy credit card. I'm a butterfingers when it comes to phones, and if i drop it, I don't want it to snap in half.
My X10, which isn't a small phone, dropped a few times (give or take 10 or so), and lived, working perfectly. The Xperia S is a light phone for its size, but I love the size of it, and it works perfect with the size of my hands. It...feels like a phone should feel I guess. It may not be as durable as my X10, but it feels and looks perfect to me.
I'm a big sucker for the look and feel of a phone and tend to pick aesthetics over the actual specs. This phone has both for me
The only negative I have is indeed the port covers, but even then, I think it's something that I can adjust to over time.
But back on the phone size thing, it's not the size, it's how you use it!
I'm hearing some creeking underneath the the transparent bar. The Xperia black plastic. Hope it will last

Maybe..,but my iPhone didn't had a plastic backcover that was slightly loose and sounding hollow when tapping on it. Design are subjective. Build quality isn't.

A piece of cellophane tape inside the cover made a difference. Feels sturdier know.

Plastic is lighter and more durable than glass. iPhones have always had their build quality issues as well dont dont give me that. If you drop a plastic phone with a shatter proof screen protector, chances are it wont break. Drop an iphone from a metre and it shatters into a million pieces. Front AND back. Youre right. Nothing subjective about that.

I'm still waiting for my pre-ordered Xperia S and using my iPhone 4S. I guess I'm very careful with my gadgets but so far I have owned three iPhones (3G, 4, currently 4S) and all of them were kept mint through their life (without case, only using carrying pouch or in the pocket), my old 3G survived a couple of falls with just small marks on the silver bezel and the 4 survived its only fall without not even a mark or scar (granted it was like 2 feet).
Have you ever owned an iPhone? Even though one assume glass can break "more easily" I can tell you that unless you drop it more than 4-5 feet or you're unlucky (as with any phone) Gorilla Glass could probably withstand the fall with barely scuffs.
And what's better is that this Gorilla Glass won't easily scratch with daily use as many shiny plastics phones I've used (Samsung Galaxy S, Nexus S, Arc, etc.). One of the reason I'm sold on Xperia S is the matte plastics than I'm hoping feel more premium than others, and hopefully it won't disappoint me. I can tell you, apart from the iPhone the only other phone I liked its build quality was the HTC Nexus One, I loved how it felt in the hand! as much as I hated the Pentile screen...
I sanded down the back of my black chassis yesterday and then got bored at work today so I decided to sand down the front as well and make my LTEvo even more unique. I don't expect everyone to like it. Some will.....some won't. It's all good. I just enjoy modding things and I like having a truly one of a kind phone.
That having been said.....ONT TO THE PICS!!!

Well I did it for 2 reasons. 1, I love to mod things. So trying different things that I don't see anywhere was my inspiration. 2, I wanted to have a phone that was 100% unique. Between my software setup, theme, and external appearance I can honestly say that there is no other phone like mine in the world. Customizations! That's why I love Android as well!

I disassembled the phone. There is no way that I would sand the front down with the digitizer still attached. I would've scratched the crap out of it. I like the silver accents on the front.
Also, I had black marks along the side of my phone (the trim on the side of the phone that is silver from the manufacturer). I just took some ultra fine grit sandpaper (400 - 600 grit) and sanded the side of the chassis down as well. It got rid of all of the scratches and knicks that I had in the chassis and smoothed it all out to a more uniform finish that matched the rest of the sanded phone. So after a while of using the phone you notice scratches and imperfections like that along the silver trim just sand it down a tad and it will look as good as new. :good:
Nicely done. I've been wanting to do something like that myself. I sanded down the top housing and painted it dark grey.
Where did you get those carbon fiber parts?
Some 2000 grit and then some Flitz metal polish would really set that off.
Really cool - I like all the metallic exposure!
That looks awesome! I like how you left the black htc letters on the back too. Nice job!

I don't recall where I purchased it from. It's 3M di-noc carbon fiber vinyl. Wherever you find that stuff online it should be the same thing.
Looks Awesome!
However, I don't really want to do it to mine.... Lol I'd probably sand the screen by accident.

I disassembled the phone in order to sand the chassis so that there was no risk of accidentally sanding the screen. Takes a minute or two to take the phone apart and you are ready to start sanding.
I buffed my shine off with fine steel wool (grade 00) , then buffed it over a final time with ultra fine steel wool (grade 0000). It's available at any Home Depot. It leaves you with a slick matte finish, no gloss, no excessive fingerprints.
I removed my back cover to do this, but its not necessary. It's actually quite easy to remove, almost like a removable back cover. I just pushed my fingernail in and got a gap, then proceeded around the edges popping each clip as I went... Alternatively you could just put tape on your camera lense to avoid scratching it.

Sorry, I have my old GS3, so not great pics. I set it at 640x480 to avoid too large files. They do show its lighter, a charcoal color now vs. the original black and you can see its now matte and not shiney. A few small scratches at there, that I still need to rub out with the ultra fine steel wool.
Set 2 - new account here and it wont let me post more than once every 5 mins.
If I had thought about it, I would have done this with my S3 over a year ago... HATE THE SHINE...
The big take here, other than you can smack the shine off with steel wool, is that the back cover is easily removable, so I would assume 3rd party replacements with real soft touch back covers are a real possibility. I hate to have a case, but a new back cover with soft touch plastic ala Nexus 7 (either rubbery like '12 or soft like '13) would make this phone perfect... Whoot!
That looks pretty nice. It even removed Verizon's crap.

Yes, I shed a little tear for that... heheh . Too bad I cant steel wool the Verizon logo off the front without making it look like crap.
Looks great. only thing I am concerned for is the design under the gloss of the ATT version. I am pretty sure the rear panels differ between carrier. I just ordered the Spigen Slim Armor...if I don't like the case, I will give this a go.

I cracked my screen while in my pocket. I actually dis assembled my phone today and was surprised by the build. The phones frame is actually poly carbonite plastic with aluminum trim added to the sides. The top and bottom trim is also poly carbonite I'm guessing for the anttenna signal. I'm gonna make a post of my phone disassembly. But the main reason for screen cracking is cause the phone is so big and so thin. The screen glass looks to only be 1- 1.5mm thick so when it flex the glass cracks. I feel they should have made the phone thicker simular to the z1 with the 20.7mp camera with a thicker battery. I would have replaced this phone with the lumia phablet if it didn't have windows on it. Windows phone is a definite no go. Anyway I strongly recommend a case that adds rigidity to the phone like the aluminum bumper case. Anyway photos attached.

Back cover is the easy part. Just use a heat gun and a plastic trim tool or plastic razor. The hard part is figuring the order of disassembly. I would have sent it back to Sony but they couldn't give me a price on how much it would cost. I also felt that added to the total cost of the phone I paid especially since I paid full pop.. And I also thought about how mad I would be if it cracked again after sending it in for repair. So im going to order a new screen assembly and see if I can fix it myself. I do work on cars for a living so a phone "should" be easy...lol. If I cant then I'll either buy another z ultra or similar phone. Not the note 3 though cause I hate touch wiz and its not big enough. I have my eye on the HP 7" tablet that suppose to have calling features as well. I may end up getting the new asus padphone.
I note that it is only a 3000mAh battery not 3050?
Here is a video from YouTube and explains how to disassemble a Sony Xperia Z...

So here is the Aluminium bumper from Devilcase (the plain aluminium version) which has not been sand-blasted and so it retains the natural luster of metallic aluminium
This is by far the most decent looking bumper I've seen for our z5p, what do you guys think? :fingers-crossed:

Yo how is playing games with that????? Becausr the corners come huge on both ends. It looks like a problem when playing a landscape game. But i really need that because the phone bends so easy .. Is that the Wellpad or the ZLEDCO case and how does the build quality feel for that case. Thanks
After researching, I found this bumper as all ALU bumpers is killing the signal reception. Also many users report it is too bendable at the power buton area.
It is perfectly looking bumper by my opinion, but for these money with these problems I'll pass.
(If they can do the same shape using some semi-bendable plastic or hard rubber will be the perfect choice for me).
Just sharing the results of my research.
Are you saying the devilcase bends near the power button or the metal frame of the phone bending? I have a z5 premium dualsim and the devilcase. It is very rigid and I see no reason why my phone would ever bend. Also about cell reception, it can affect signal quality but mostly if you have weak signal to begin with. I haven't noticed degradation on my device and I have both tmobile and att on this dualsim phone.
Actually, I am sharing about the bumper which seems is bending. Sony Z5 Premium Devil case review In this case even cracked the back glass.
My signal is perfect, except in the garage, where I need all of it to stay in service. Not to mention the regular Mall's visits and other places in the city where you'll be unreachable.
But at the end this is only my opinion, and it is based on reviews only.
This thing makes a huge phone even bigger. Why would you do that??
