So I've ran into a new issue. Just got my replacement phone from VZW, the trackball quit on my old one, and it came with 2.1 already installed. I didn't think much about it until I went to root the phone.
I've tried the first edition PB00IMG.zip and the more recent link from Ivan on XDA and with both files, when I boot the phone holding vol dn and end, I get the following error msg:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<Action> Yes
I've also tried the MR2 RUU downgrade method, but it failed too. Anyone have any ideas on how to root the phone?

Sorry dude, you can't root. you now have the same problem as the people with the leak versions. The boot loader on your phone of higher than the one on the root rom.
Verizon has been sending some replacement phones that have the "wrong" HBOOT on them and users aren't able to root. Sounds like you got one too...
Was this shipped to you or an in-store exchange ? Seems to me that stores might have older, non-updated phones in stock, but I could be wrong.
It was shipped, go figure. So there's no way around it? :[
Not with that phone. Same problem people (who installed a leak) have been having for many, many weeks now...
Do you think its possible that since so many leakers have swapped their phones like scum bags that verizon is refurbing them and not flashing them back to stock?

Its not "Wrong," HBoot 1.49 is just what Verizon is shipping all of their New Eris's with. Check the latest Verizon RUU that Conflipper released

spencer, technically, verizon and htc, and probably even google can return the phones back to whatever version they want, its just a matter of if they want to make the ROM and bootloader that will allow that.
And of course, they are not going to willingly do that for us, since that allows us to root the phone, which they dont want. they would rather have us keep the phones on an unrootable version.
That sucks dude. Strange enough my trackball on my eris is not working in one direction but I guess I'll just get use to it since I love root.
I loved having root too, looks like I'm up s***creek without a paddle though.
Damn that sucks man!!!!! Mine were shiped overnight from Texas and both had 1.5. Crap luck man. Just pray your trackball goes out again and it probably will.
I need to send my wife's phone back to verizon. I need to unroot it and get it back to stock before I return it. Is running the Verizon RUU all I need to do to get the phone back to legit? I didn't know if that wipes out the bootloader and everything?
Any input is appreciated.

Yes, it replaces the bootloader, the radio (with a slightly older version than the 7/17 OTA), and the /system, /data, recovery, and boot partitions. You might find that after you do this it will immediately inform you that an update is available (the 7/17 OTA).
That should be sufficient. Highly, highly unlikely that VZW is going to put a crack team of computer forensic scientists "on the case" to investigate your phone. There have been folks who reported (either here or over on AF, I can't remember) that they had returned multiple rooted phones, without making any effort whatsoever to clean them up - and not a peep out of Big Red.

Her phone is the trackball too...I was really hoping they would come off a different model since this will be her third Eris. Maybe the inevitable next time

If it happens again I would start getting ugly with Verizon and say something like "if you guys can't send me an eris that will work properly then I want a different phone that works." Usually if you complain enough or threaten to go to a competitor they will do something for you.

My power button is acting up more and more. I have to press it 3 time on average to get the screen to turn off.
I am HBoot 1.4 revolutionary rooted. I have the sprint protection plan and would like to get this fixed.
I don't know what is best to do. Flash a stock ROM and take it in or un root and take it in.
What do the XDA-gods think is best when dealing with sprint repair?

Flash the newest RUU you can find. It'll updates your bootloader to 1.5 but you'll still be S-off.

Ya you shouldn't have a problem with sprint seeing your rooted they don't care. Just make sure they don't swap your phone out .. Somtimes they do... Well my store does can be a pain in the ass if you wanna keep the one you have..
I was just wondering if sprint would kick it back if they saw s-off. What are the chances they would boot into hboot and see that it is s-off?

Very slim ... I wouldn't worry about it worst thing they would do is say to unroot it .. But for a power button issue I don't think you will have a problem.
Most stores honestly won't really go looking for evidence of root unless they suspect that you've actually caused your problems by doing so.... Obviously, hardware issues don't even come close.
Thanks. Anyone have a link for a stock ROM? It is running a ruu best?

When I worked in repair at corporate we dealt with all kinds of problems, software, hardware, customer information mostly.
Sprint actually recycles their phones, taking working parts off returns and replacing them, never would they check hboot.
Most of the techs know nothing unfortunately, they run a standard check, none of which entails checking for root.
The biggest thing they look for is water damage/corrosion all they will do is try replacing your power button, which prolly will work, otherwise your looking at a refurbished replacement.

a lot of techs dont even look for s off... most people dont even know what it means.
throw a stock ROM on it... boot it once to make sure all is good. you don't need to flash all the updates. stock rom, stock kernel will do. nothing else would effect the power button not working anyways. that is either hardware or kernel related.

OP have you taken your battery door off and pressed the button with your finger nail or a pencil for the hell of it..

Flashing a stock (rooted) rom, is what I was going for.
Removing the back cover and using my nail, works. Putting the cover back on, it starts doing the same thing. The screen turns off, then comes right back on. Seems it is the cover not the physical button.

You can I guess be "unrooted" while running a stock ROM, but you'd still have S-off so you could just flash something else afterwards.

Received my replacement phone with OTA update installed. I had ViperDNA on the phone that broke, and miss it very much. :crying: Now, every couple hours, I search through XDA DNA forum, hoping to find our fabulous dev's have found a way arround this formidable roadblock. Thought maybe I'll start a thread all of us in the same boat can watch, and maybe chat, until this egg is cracked. If any dev's have any news for us, that would be great also. :fingers-crossed:
Hi I'm in the same boat. I got this phone yesterday for the first time and did the noob move of updating ota. So I'm just hanging around waiting I'm not even sure where we're supposed to check for news on this.

If you haven't unlocked and have the OTA then you can't unlock until a new method is found.
Is it possible, if I have never unlocked the bootloader or got CID because of latest OTA (2.04.605.2 71RD), to revert back to previous firmware by flashing RUU? would I then be able to run SuperCID apk, get CID and unlock bootloader?

There is no "current" unlock thread. There was an unlock thread from Nov 26th, then another one from Feb 7th. Also, there's an all in one tool kit from Jan 23rd, and a complete guide to root, too. All of these worked with the old firmware.
I'm pretty sure when a new unlock procedure is found, it will get it's own thread.

I tried RUU, multiple times, no go. Just got my replacement phone 2 days ago, like a noob first thing I did was OTA, I thought there was an unlock, wasn't until after I did I realized I should have gotten the unlock.bin FIRST.
I even tried to use the unlock.bin from the DNA I hard bricked. Ofcourse I knew that wouldn't work, but had to try. For 45 plus shipping I guess you can send it to someone and they JTAG and S-off. I looked up how to do it, the box you need is 200$ and you need to take the phone apart, remove battery, and all sorts of junk. I could have unbricked my other DNA with the JTAG method. I would rather wait to see if these guys figure it out. BTW do we know if anyone is even looking into it?

"If these guys figure it out"??????
Really? It's a puzzle. The Devs here live for figuring out puzzles. It's what they do for fun. It's why we have awesome ROMs etc. They WILL figure it out. Until then we just have to be a little patient. If patience isn't your thing, mail your phone away to MobileTechVideos. I'm interested in hearing first hand if they really do have it cracked. Me personally, I enjoy the rooting process. Doing it myself is half the fun. I'll wait. I got time.

This gives me hope my replacement will be original stock and not the OTA! Had to get a replacment that will show up tomorrow as my screen has a "dead" touchscreen line through it across the screen horizontally (right between the 3rd and 4th row of app shortcuts on the homescreen.
It's really weird...I cannot move any shortcuts in the 4th row above and any shortcuts in rows 1-3, I can move freely but not into the 4th row.
typing on the stock keyboard id doable, but any ttype of swype method (which I need and depend on, is impossible).
If it ships with the OTA I will be bummed

No there is not at this moment.. sad to say.. There is one option but it might cost you about a $100.. You could look online for a 4.1.2 motherboard for i605, the specific model.. it very simple to swap out..took me only about 15 mind and I have never done it before.. If your not comfortable PM me and I can recommend someone you can send it to that guarantees their work/parts for 3 months.. good luck man!:good:

I though about taking the mobo out of my cracked screen phone and swapping it once I booted this replacement and saw it was 4.3.

Sounds like something wasn't put together right.. I would start over and make sure all is connected properly.. And this motherboard was from same device correct? Not like one from tmobile, sprint etc ect Verizon to Verizon..
Yeah, it was from a i605 I got two weeks short of a year ago. I also agree about something not being put together right. I'm going to swap the antenna and speaker too.

Well, I've made some progress. It boots up with the blue LED and I can hear the Verizon chime, but I get absolutely nothing on the screen. It's completely black.

Weird sounds like something is not hook up to the screen? You didn't force it open and mess the screen up right..

I'm thinking I must have messed up a ribbon cable by accident. The insurance company is going to send me a new one, and I'll just keep the locked bootloader and "saferoot" so I can use Titanium Backup and Rom Toolbox.
