Broke screen getting replacement - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I just cracked the screen on my i605 yesterday, and they're sending me a replacement today. What are the odds that it'll have 4.3 on it? Because, I'd really like to unlock the bootloader.

Just got my "new" replacement phone, and yep 4.3 on it. So, no unlocking the boot loader. Is there any way I can installed sophisticated ROM, or better yet CWM recovery?

No there is not at this moment.. sad to say.. There is one option but it might cost you about a $100.. You could look online for a 4.1.2 motherboard for i605, the specific model.. it very simple to swap out..took me only about 15 mind and I have never done it before.. If your not comfortable PM me and I can recommend someone you can send it to that guarantees their work/parts for 3 months.. good luck man!:good:

I actually tries "saferoot" and so far so good. I'm still waiting to see if it'll restore my data through Titanium Backup. Root checker does show it is rooted though.
I though about taking the mobo out of my cracked screen phone and swapping it once I booted this replacement and saw it was 4.3.

Dude thats a GREAT idea! You should.. as long as it was not damaged with the phone..
You can root 4.3 just fine.. that is the same method I used when I did it.. Make sure evrything is installing properly and you have no errors when the script runs through..
If you need any helping swapping motherboard out.. Hit me up in a PM and I can maybe provide some pointers..

Is it just a matter of taking out all the baby silver screws, and connecting some ribbon cables? Also, will I still keepxmy CWM recovery and old sophisticated root?
I've done dzens of pc mobos but never a phone.

Yes..thats all it takes.. Umm not to sure.. Whatever you had on your old one might still be there.. not sure if it resets or anything..
If you have done PC's then it should be no problem for you.. take your time..just smaller pieces..

I've already sealed it up in the return envelope, but I'll cut it open for a chance to run a custom recovery and better root. I just don't think I can last a full year before my contracts up.
Even if it does reset my CWM backup I'd hope would restore everything.

That does not make any sense... Did you watch that video? and stupid ? is your battery charged?

I watched the video. Battery was at like 90%. Now with the now mobo in the new phone if I hit the power button 3 times the LED will turn red, but when it's pliugged in charging it doesn't do anything.
I did leave the speaker and antenna from the new mobo in the replacement phone. Do I need to swap those too?

Sounds like something wasn't put together right.. I would start over and make sure all is connected properly.. And this motherboard was from same device correct? Not like one from tmobile, sprint etc ect Verizon to Verizon..

Yeah, it was from a i605 I got two weeks short of a year ago. I also agree about something not being put together right. I'm going to swap the antenna and speaker too.

Weird sounds like something is not hook up to the screen? You didn't force it open and mess the screen up right..

I'm thinking I must have messed up a ribbon cable by accident. The insurance company is going to send me a new one, and I'll just keep the locked bootloader and "saferoot" so I can use Titanium Backup and Rom Toolbox.

[Q] didnt know my eris could swim!

ive got an issue, i happened to drop my eris in a pool last night on accident. luckily it still works for the most part but i just came to find out that cant access my sd card but it charges just fine?? and my phone wont work in a call unless on speaker phone now... im really happy that it still works but not having access to my sd is kinda stifling being rooted, has this happened to anyone else?, cuz im really debating sending it back under its warranty,im just thinking itd be an easy fix and maybe cheaper than an insurance claim....
any feedback would be great....

if ur phone is rooted ur warranty is void
Your SD card doesnt work cause the card itself is probably broken and the microphone shouldnt work cause its full of water. Try taking it all apart (remove battery, sd card, case back) and put it all in rice over night. maybe itll dry out more. best of luck!

yeah usb toggle thru recovery dont work either. im really suprised it still works aswell as it does, my past three phones have died from drinking too much liquid but they were blackberries, the Eris is pretty indistructable! thanks for your help guys...
I've bricked 4 Eris's. Rooted with custom recovery. I walk into the Verizon store, say it won't boot and walk out with a refurb. They don't really seem to care. The last time the guy even gave me the link to the 1-click root app. They *may* check the water damage indicators on yours, but I wouldn't bet on it. Worth a shot at least.

Not that I condone such behavior, but they are relatively easy to brick... They'll switch it out free at the store. Claim it happened after the OTA.

Samsung Vibrant Will Not Turn on at ALLL!!!! PLEASE HELP!!

Hey before I say anything at all I would appreciate all your help and I have looked everywhere and found no answer. My phone was working perfectly, until I got a T-Mobile update on my phone. I confirmed it and downloaded it. The update reset my phone to a white screen with a blue loading bar. I left it alone couple minutes later I get the phone and click the turn on button and nothing happens at all. The phone does absolutely nothing. It will not power on at all.
1. Pull battery
2. Pull sim
3. Pull sdcard
4. Plug in USB cord
5. Hold Vol+/Vol- and power button simultaneously.
6. Put battery back in and let go of power button when screen goes black after seeing the battery charge icon.
7. Search for Odin and 2.1 stock files.
8. Odin back to 2.1 Stock.
I tried that and it didn't work. even when i plug in the phone nothing happens. The phone does absolutely nothing at all. I don't think it could be the hardware because the phone was working perfectly.. Until I did the tmobile update.
so basically no buttons are lighting up? doesnt do the charging battery icon when plugged in without battery? if not go to tmobile slap the person behind the counter with you phone and politely ask for another.

Enzozenuni, sell me your vibrant.
Nothing Lights up. I installing the stock firmware. I know its not hardware or it can't be. I have the box and everything and the phone is in perfect condition.
If Tmobiles update bricked your phone, just tell them that and get a replacement. For all the people here who abuse the replacement system, you're one of the few here with a legitimate case. I've seen people here who've literally had their phone replaced six times due to THEIR idiotic mistakes. So you should have no trouble getting one.
Corrupted bootloader most likely...you're not gonna be fixing it with Odin. Take it to T-Mo.

Hey,
I didn't feel like going through the trouble of buying the Motorola factory charger or whatever you need to charge the phone when it said *battery low* *cannot program* when trying to use the RSD program (might have spelled it wrong) to restore to factory settings. My battery must have been low and in the middle of the restore, it stopped and now Im unable to get to either recovery or charge it.
I had insurance luckily so I just got my galaxy nexus back and should be to me tomorrow. Do yall think someone will buy this phone like that? i have 2 nandroid backups on there so it's probably not safe to sale with that stuff accessible.. smh.. that's why i liked the samsung galaxy s and galaxy s 2 devices because you can use Odin which makes the phones virtually unbrickable. The phone's in PERFECT condition. Would be nice if there was a way around that man

Yeah but you know when you're a frequent flasher and are sure it only takes about 10 percent batter at the most, you don't charge it to the max but I just made a boo boo by not reading the part that said *You must be running a the rom already before flashing the update portion*.. that caused the bootloop..
Thanks a lot though. You're right

Get phone in to ap fastboot and go down to bp tools and then press vol+.
Phone should reboot in to a sort of recovered state (last firmware that was on phone) and allow you to charge up.
Once 100% retry flashing.
I screwed my phone several times already and thought I wouldnt recover. Through some chat help have always recovered. Same for my Charge after a few times you figure out all the tricks.
You can recover it. I've done it twice
If you check out my post it shows you a alternative and easier way charge your phone again and make it back to stock rom and no root. Then you can sell your phone for a better price or just keep it!
Ill give you $150 for it...
Ill trade you a Samsung Charge for it. Seriously though you should be able to recover.

no. i cant get into recovery nor into download mode. the screen shows nothing at all and the phone doesnt vibrate. i did the tmobile chat and she said they might need to exchange it but would take 7-10 business days. i didnt tell her it was rooted tho. i was hoping the usb jig would unbrick it. i have an old usb from my other phone. i already cut it and stripped it but i need a 300k resistor and radioshack doesnt open in 1 more hour.
i just checked device manager and if i plug in my device it shows QHSUSB_DLOAD with a yellow exclamation.
update: i installed some drivers i found online and it now shows as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (com7) in device manager but odin wont recognize it still
so after doing the live chat with samsung and they wanted me to send them my phone to check it out and i had to wait 6-10 business days i went to my local tmobile store the guy tried to turn it on tried charging it and said to go back on wednesday because thats when they get them. so i am stuck with a loner phone.

worst case, take it back to tmobile tell them that it got really hot and turned off and wont power up. they wont check anything. just get a new one. and DONT FLASH ANYTHING UNTIL YOU READ UP ON IT! we are all using the Rooted stock rom. just chill out for now... ROMS WILL COME. this is the hottest phone on the market...
I thought Samsung phones were unbrickable. Is this sort of thing common or was it a bad unit?

Use the jig. I made one with parts from Radio Shack and it works on the S3.

You are wrong in this case because he hard bricked it, which is why he only sees the QHUSB_DLOAD mode.
That requires special software in order to flash, and we don't get access to it.

yea i went yesterday and just said it wont turn on. he tried it and plugged it into the power outlet and nothing. he just said they dont get their shipments until wednesday(tomorrow) so i guess they will exchange it. good thing it was on warranty still. im guessing samsung wont be able to tell it was rooted since they cant access it and they will just reflash it and sell it as refurbished or something right?

An unbrickable phone does not exist. The closest to unbrickable as you can get is an iPhone. But it can be bricked if you try hard enough I'm sure. Strapping an m80 to my iPhone seemed to do the trick as well

unbrickable phones do exist, almost all samsung galaxy phones are capable of getting the "unbrickable mod" which is a hardware modification that enables the phone to be re-flashed without working bootloaders. but unbrickable out of the box, no.

isnt the captivate unbrickable?
i read somewhere that there are some phones that boot from the sd card first and that those are unbrickable.

I believe there are some that are very difficult to brick such as a setup that boots from sd like you mentioned. Regardless of how difficult it is to brick, there is always some idiot out there that will do the impossible

I know I'm screwed, but does this even happen?

So somehow, despite hiding my s4 in a massive otter box defender case, the LCD cracked underneath the glass (but glass is fine), while screen-down in my pocket.
Has anyone seen/heard that happen before? I've always seen the glass shatter before the LCD breaks.
Is there an option before I go the Asurion insurance claim route?
Thx
And on a similar note, does anyone have recommendations for making a nandroid when I can't see the screen?

If its anything like the old galaxy series, when the new phone arrives, you can take apart the phone backing and swap the motherboards and it will have everything on it.

Won't the replacement company know the imei is different then the one I put on the claim form?
But I love the idea

TBH my friend has done it with all his replacements on his S3 and they have yet to notice anything, but all his replacements were cracked screens

What recovery do you have? If you cwm I can record the button presses to backup to ext sd card.

this. regardless of what recovery you have try to memorize the touch sequences and basically do it blind.
i did it once for my friend on his S3 when half the screen died out, could only see the bottom.
also its not usually recommended to flash a backup from one phone to another. just how i always learned from back in the day
Thats why i was going to write it down and post it here for him. Its about 11 button presses so it wouldnt be difficult. I had a droid x that crashed on me and when I got my new one from asurion I used the backup from the previous phone no problem. Theres quite a few posts on the forums of people doing the same. Only ones I read having problems were peolle restoring the backup on the same model phone with a diff kernel.

I have an old nexus with twrp I can use to follow the steps, hope it works.
Do I got my replacement phone, and was going to swap motherboards, but noticed the version on the device was different;
My old phone was 13.05, while the replacement says 13.07. Is that just the manufacture month? Several other numbers in the plastic pieces don't match, so I wanted to confirm before I messed something up.
Thanks!
Oh, also, is it possible top use Odin to backup the phone and restore to the new one?
No odin doesnt have that capability
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
you can do it through adb, assuming you have usb debugging enabled, or you could use a mhl adapter and hook it up to a tv, on a seperate note thats bull**** these things are even cheaper than i thought, i cracked my gnex after a year with no case and decided i wasnt gonna let that happen again, so i got an otterbox defender as well, which makes the thing almost unusable because its so f***ng huge, but if it willl still break thats bulls**t
I ended up doing the motherboard swap. We'll see if I get in trouble. It was certainly the easiest solution, in terms of saving time trying to back up, setting up the OS again, etc etc. Unfortunately the IMEIs don't match tho. Oh well!
