[Q] didnt know my eris could swim! - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive got an issue, i happened to drop my eris in a pool last night on accident. luckily it still works for the most part but i just came to find out that cant access my sd card but it charges just fine?? and my phone wont work in a call unless on speaker phone now... im really happy that it still works but not having access to my sd is kinda stifling being rooted, has this happened to anyone else?, cuz im really debating sending it back under its warranty,im just thinking itd be an easy fix and maybe cheaper than an insurance claim....
any feedback would be great....

if ur phone is rooted ur warranty is void

Your SD card doesnt work cause the card itself is probably broken and the microphone shouldnt work cause its full of water. Try taking it all apart (remove battery, sd card, case back) and put it all in rice over night. maybe itll dry out more. best of luck!

yeah usb toggle thru recovery dont work either. im really suprised it still works aswell as it does, my past three phones have died from drinking too much liquid but they were blackberries, the Eris is pretty indistructable! thanks for your help guys...

I've bricked 4 Eris's. Rooted with custom recovery. I walk into the Verizon store, say it won't boot and walk out with a refurb. They don't really seem to care. The last time the guy even gave me the link to the 1-click root app. They *may* check the water damage indicators on yours, but I wouldn't bet on it. Worth a shot at least.

id do that if i had a brick but mine is far from bricked; its just small minor problems that a good phone repair can do easily for proably alot cheaper.

Not that I condone such behavior, but they are relatively easy to brick... They'll switch it out free at the store. Claim it happened after the OTA.

Let the thing sit powered off to dry out. When I took my phone in for trackball probs they checked my water damage indicator.

Dood, call it in or take in. Lie to em, I'm on my 3rd, both before were rooted. first was a complete lie bc I was trying to get droid. But I banged it up after I got my replacement. I really don't care anymore about what's "right" especially for verizon. Use ur warranty..
Oh have you tried the sd card in another phone. That'll explain a lot if works or doesn't.

[Q] Sending Back Under Warranty - Best way to Stock and Wipe

I was using the latest DOW 14, ended up with the dreaded internal sd card not mounting. stl10 error!
Anyway, sending it back, but I don't have anyway of wiping the internal sd card. Is there something I can do to mount it to my pc like a USB drive.

Try downloading Odin, and the stock image Do you know how to get into download mode on your phone? do a search for the "no brick" odin image, then go into download mode, load odin, flash it, then flash the stock odin image, and you should be good to go. The great thing about this phone is its almost impossible to brick. You can email me if you have any [email protected]

Thanks for the reply. I've odined back to stock, no good. The only thing that gets my phone remotely working is Eugene's Froyo no Brick.
I can't mouth the phone's storage. There must be a work around thru the pc, BUT MY PHONE WON"T MOUNT TO PC EITHER. AND YES I HAVE THE RIGHT DRIVERS.
May be there's a voodoo rom that can be applied through odin. I know that voodoo recovery has some mount options.

I am sending my phone back and I am sure I am having the same problem as you are. Got my phone today thank god! So if it wont boot up T-Mobile cant see what you have done with it. They don't go and look what you have done they just use what parts they can and ditch the rest. I rooted and flashed CyanogenMod on my Mytouch 3g and the screen went out. I got a replacement under warranty then sent the phone back as is. Not one problem from T-Mobile. So just send it back and don't worry about what is on it.

I would not bank on that, I am sure that when they receive the phone, they will check it to determin and verify that the phone is still under warranty. And if they discover it is rooted, then your warranty is voided and you will be charged for the exchange

I've heard stories like this, where you get a nasty bill a few months later. Though I think it really depends on where you are and who they have working on these things. I wouldn't be surprised to hear things like these swept under the rug, but I also wouldn't be surprised hear of people getting caught. I really don't know what they do with the bricked phones people claim "just stopped workin" maybe they send them to a company that specializes in smartphone autopsies...or the manufacturer even.
Well I got my replacement phone today... hell yes I paid the $20 for rush delivery (took 2 days). I did flash the JFD even though it wont boot up. If I do get charged for it I will let you all know.

Well, if its truly bricked and they cant get it to boot, then they just send back to manufacturer. But if they get it to boot, then they will try to determine why it bricked in the first place. So if unsure whether or not flash to stock removed root, then best bet is to file a claim with insurance to get it replaced. Because paying 130 deductible is better than paying full price. At least IMO
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
BTW, If you have insurance on the phone the replacement cost is $150. Due to the fact that I have used the insurance to replace my phone more than 2 times in 1 year my insurance was canceled. When I did the warranty replacement now they tell me the cost billed to me is $238 if they find phone damage is not under warranty. Much less than buying the phone at full market price.

You aren't alone, fella. There's a lot of us in the same boat right now after using DOW. (And yes, we've all tried to flash back to stock with Odin - any stock.)

Good luck, xdarooted. Let us know how it goes.

Bricked Evo3D!

I can confirm that I bricked my phone tonight. I was playing in Clockwork trying to get a ext4 partition using a sdparted.txt. I gave up with that because I could not get it to work properly. Well I decided to push my a rom from adb to sd and it was taking forever so I closed out cmd and proceeded to mount SD from recovery but it would not mount. So I figured the SD card was locked up with CMD or perhaps I corrupted the partitions. So I pulled the battery and popped the sd in my pc and everything was fine with the card. So I went back and put the sd card back in my phone and tried to boot it up and I got nothing. I then plugged the phone into my pc and got nothing.. No lights no boot nothing. It did try to install QHSUSB_DLOAD drivers. Which I know someone is already working on. I guess sprint will be getting a visit tomorrow with my brick. Sigh.. No matter how experienced you think you are you are always not experienced enough..
Just wondering have you tried turning it on while its not plugged in? It may take a few pushes of the power button. Well you mentioned you tried before you plugged it in but try a few times, one time it took me 6 presses of the power button.
Try pulling the battery out waiting for 5 to 10 minutes then put it back and try booting!
Sywped from mah Supasonic!
To answer both of you Yes I have tried many times of pushing the power button plugged and unplugged and also leaving the battery an for extended period of time. No charging light comes on and it prompts for the QHSUSB_DLOAD drivers. I am assuming this is what trevE has been working on. Thus leading me to believe it is a full brick.
Can you get to your Hboot?

He could just say his phone turned off and now it wont boot. The employees at a Sprint repair center don't have the time or resources to launch an investigation into exactly how your phone failed and if it was his fault or not. Unless he opens his mouth or its some kind of physical/liquid damage they will give him a replacement no problem.
This is correct. By this I mean above post. They won't take the time to really check and you are not lying by saying it won't boot.

They won't find out if the phone wont turn on. The problem is that people are not smarter than the equipment they are working with and do stupid things like brick their phones, and return them while lying and in the end, the rest of us end up suffering. Before Android brought in a whole slew of retards who bricked their phones, insurance was a 50 dollar deductible. I fully expect it to be 150 soon.
If you are dumb enough to try stupid things and brick your phone, at least man up and be responsible and do the right thing. Yeah, thats not going to happen.
if you brick a phone why not do the right thing and get yourself a new one by manning up and paying for it. I mean dont we all talk about doing the right thing? If you dont wanna pay retail, I am sure they will let your renew your upgrade, if you tell them you can either buy a phone or pay the ETF and go elsewhere, they will usually let you upgrade the phone.
I cant believe you experiment with stupid **** when you know it might f up the phone.
If you have insurance you can just lose it and pay the 100.00 ded. the brick should be worth at least a 100.00 on ebay. I sold an og evo with a broken lcd and bad esn. in an auction it got 126.50 about a month ago.

Meh just a soft brick, it's not like he's shipping it to them in pieces or anything. It just needs reflashed. If he were to use insurance the deductible would be nearly pure profit for them.
I remember seeing in another forum (can't remember which atm) that something was buggy in clockwork and it would zero out parts of the eMMC when formatting/partitioning something. It may be a good idea for someone to try and find out what it was doing to see if our version is prone to it also.
I decided to come back to my post and say a few more things. To the few who harped and lectured about taking my phone to sprint, I just wanted to let you know I explained to the sweet girl behind the counter that I was formatting my sdcard and some how the phones emmc got erased with it. She had no freaking clue Wtf I was talking about and just gave me a different phone. I never had any intention of claiming insurance or lying about how it happened. So you guys who whined can settle down now. But on another note this all happened on clock work and yes I was repartitioning the SD card via clock work / recovery - adb shell - sdparted.txt script.
Something funky happened when I did the battery pull after I could no longer mount the sdcard from within recovery..

I think that's the NookColor. You *cannot* format your SD (or on any non-stock rom) or you would format a portion of the eMMC and could (would always?) brick, hard....though it probably happens elsewhere, it's the entire platform from what I recall (of which the NookColor is a near reference design)...I think it was from confusion caused by how the partitions were referenced since you could boot from SD or eMMC or have any number of partitions on either.

[Q] Help unrooting?

Okay, I did some searching and I didn't really find what I needed in my circumstance. I've read the threads about unrooting my thunderbolt buy my situation is a bit more specific than the generic unrooting procedures that I've seen.
So, through some weird circumstances my thunerbolt's screen doesnt turn on anymore. It ended up being dropped about a foot and the screen just died on me. there is no physical damage to the phone (i.e. the screen isn't cracked or bleeding). I already talked to Verizon reps about it, and I might be able to turn it in for warranty replacement. (If not, I'll just have to use my upgrae ). but to turn it for warranty I will obviously have to remove root. I haven't flashed anything to my phone for about 3 or 4 months so I know I didn't kill the screen by messing something up.
Here's the catch:
-my screen is dead so i cant really see what im doing on the phone.
-for some reason my computer cant recognize my phone. it keeps telling me that "the USB evice has malfunctioned".
-my SD card still reads in my card reader on my PC.
So basically I don't really have any idea how i could possibly go about unrooting my phone. Any ideas or suggestion are welcome. Maybe a donation to the contributors that help me? If not I will sadly have to leave the realm of the thunderbolt and I will use my upgrade If needed. (I would much rather keep my Thunderbolt than have to upgrade to like the nexus or something...I dont like them....)
Thanks in advanced

Can't they like hook it up to their computer or something like that and find that the phone is rooted?
Maybe, but didn't you say your PC doesn't recognize phone anymore? From what I've read, don't quote me on this, Big Red does not really do an in depth check before sending out for repair. Check for root, sure they do but again no screen/power, who knows then. Repair people could prolly care less. Again, nothing in stone here, just stuff I picked reading here n there.

Yeah. I went into the store and they shipped me a new warranty replacement phone. Although they did this, I'm still a bit apprehensive about sending it back while it's still rooted. So my original request still stands: I would like to know of a possible way to unroot it.
Thanks

USB Port semi-dead, will Jig still work?

Ok so I had to use Mobile Odin to flash back to stock everything, but I still have the counter (no triangle).
I had bought a Jig that was recommended on here, but it didn't work tried it on several phones just to make sure.
So will it work even with the port messed up, that way I can get another?
It does charge though, but PC won't recognize it and yes I tried different PCs and cables.
It might, but if you're sending it back to AT&T I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're on stock, and erase your internal SD card.
I did that months ago, with a flash counter of 2, and they never did slap me with a charge because of breaking warranty. Plus man, worse comes to worse, you tell them that a "friend" told you he could fix your phone, and you trusted him, but you never did anything other than use the Android Market. They'll buy that, thinking he must of tripped the counter. That was my exit strategy at least, but nah, never got called up even. Shame really.

The manager technician took out a paper and made sure it was stock by *#1234#.
His assistant didn't even know what phone it was.

An actual new handset? or refurb?
Forgot to mention the guy in the AT&T store asked "how long have you had this screen protector?"
Mind you I don't and the screen was clean, I really felt like I got helped by morons but glad I was.

Probably is a refurb but I've found the refurbs are better than the new. Normally less issues. The people in the AT&T store are clueless, they have not a clue what they are doing but I feel bad for them since they deal with the dumbest people in the world everyday and that would be the average cell phone user blaming them for losing their contacts and pictures. I laugh. I always go in and tell them specifically I need nothing backed up, I also tell them I factory reset and have everything at home on my computer. They normally get me in and out of there within 5 minutes.

Broke screen getting replacement

I just cracked the screen on my i605 yesterday, and they're sending me a replacement today. What are the odds that it'll have 4.3 on it? Because, I'd really like to unlock the bootloader.

Just got my "new" replacement phone, and yep 4.3 on it. So, no unlocking the boot loader. Is there any way I can installed sophisticated ROM, or better yet CWM recovery?

No there is not at this moment.. sad to say.. There is one option but it might cost you about a $100.. You could look online for a 4.1.2 motherboard for i605, the specific model.. it very simple to swap out..took me only about 15 mind and I have never done it before.. If your not comfortable PM me and I can recommend someone you can send it to that guarantees their work/parts for 3 months.. good luck man!:good:

I actually tries "saferoot" and so far so good. I'm still waiting to see if it'll restore my data through Titanium Backup. Root checker does show it is rooted though.
I though about taking the mobo out of my cracked screen phone and swapping it once I booted this replacement and saw it was 4.3.

Dude thats a GREAT idea! You should.. as long as it was not damaged with the phone..
You can root 4.3 just fine.. that is the same method I used when I did it.. Make sure evrything is installing properly and you have no errors when the script runs through..
If you need any helping swapping motherboard out.. Hit me up in a PM and I can maybe provide some pointers..

Is it just a matter of taking out all the baby silver screws, and connecting some ribbon cables? Also, will I still keepxmy CWM recovery and old sophisticated root?

Yes..thats all it takes.. Umm not to sure.. Whatever you had on your old one might still be there.. not sure if it resets or anything..
If you have done PC's then it should be no problem for you.. take your time..just smaller pieces..
Good Luck!:good::highfive:

I've already sealed it up in the return envelope, but I'll cut it open for a chance to run a custom recovery and better root. I just don't think I can last a full year before my contracts up.
Even if it does reset my CWM backup I'd hope would restore everything.

Well, I swapped the old mobo with the new one. Now, neither the old mobo or new mobo works with the replacement phone. I made sure everything was connected the same way, but still it won't even power on.

That does not make any sense... Did you watch that video? and stupid ? is your battery charged?
I watched the video. Battery was at like 90%. Now with the now mobo in the new phone if I hit the power button 3 times the LED will turn red, but when it's pliugged in charging it doesn't do anything.
I did leave the speaker and antenna from the new mobo in the replacement phone. Do I need to swap those too?

I can now get the green LED light to come one with the new mobo and charger plugged in if I hold the power button, but that's all it will do.

Sounds like something wasn't put together right.. I would start over and make sure all is connected properly.. And this motherboard was from same device correct? Not like one from tmobile, sprint etc ect Verizon to Verizon..
Yeah, it was from a i605 I got two weeks short of a year ago. I also agree about something not being put together right. I'm going to swap the antenna and speaker too.

Well, I've made some progress. It boots up with the blue LED and I can hear the Verizon chime, but I get absolutely nothing on the screen. It's completely black.

Weird sounds like something is not hook up to the screen? You didn't force it open and mess the screen up right..

I'm thinking I must have messed up a ribbon cable by accident. The insurance company is going to send me a new one, and I'll just keep the locked bootloader and "saferoot" so I can use Titanium Backup and Rom Toolbox.
