Hi,
I'm new here, I searched the forum but didn't find answers.
I have a rooted HTC Legend with CM 7, but I'm trying to understand the logic behind the rooting process.
The main questions are:
1. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I noticed that "step1-windows.bat" script is flashing a testimage.zip, which appears to be a RUU 1.31 (with rooted recovery).
In this case, If it installs RUU 1.31, why do you have to install the RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_1.31....exe before that?
2. Why do you need to install HTCSync 2.0.33 (Old version) instead of the new HTCSync before the actual rooting process?
3. When I have a 2.1 un-rooted device with 0.43 HBOOT, can I follow the "Already OTA updated with HBOOT 1.00" section of the following guide, to root the phone instead of the regular method?
(I know it says "Already OTA updated with HBOOT 1.00", but I thought to myself that if it works with HBOOT 1.0, why shouldn't it work with HBOOT 0.43)
Many thanks
I un-rooted my phone, and then I managed to root my phone without using the RUU 1.31 exe, and without using step2-windows.bat...
then I used a fake flash CWM recovery to flash CM7 rom (so I didn't even need to install htcsync 2, because the phone wasn't connected to the computer at this point) (p.s. in this whole process I didn't use a GC and it worked just fine, maybe because I didn't run the RUU exe?)
anyway, I'm confused.. why advanced users wrote in all the root guides to install the ruu 1.31 exe, and running step2-windows.bat if it wasn't necessary?
I'm the only one replying to this post
Anyway, here are the steps I did to root my phone successfully: (In my opinion it's easier than the regular methods)
1. Verify the newest HTCSync is installed on your computer (http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=313&cat=3&dl_id=1073)
2. Connect your phone to the computer as a removable storage
3. Go to Settings->Applications->Development , and verify “USB debugging” is checked
4. Download the fake flash and put it on your SD card (http://www.mediafire.com/?jtzjvxjemzx)
5. Download a Custom ROM of your choice and put in on your SD card (Recommended is CM7: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/update-cm-7.0.0-Legend-signed.zip)
6. Download and UnRAR rooting tools to C:\root (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UZBQOFKM)
7. Open CMD on your computer (Start Menu->Run->CMD) and run the following:
a. c: & cd\root & crackin.bat
8. After it’s done verify you see the following line: “crwxrwxrwx … /dev/mtd/mtd0”
(If you don’t – try to re-run the command)
9. Turn off your phone and turn it on by pressing the “power” button combined with the “back” button
(Verify you see on a “Fastboot” line with red background)
10. Open CMD on your computer (Start Menu->Run->CMD) and run the following:
a. c: & cd\root & step1-windows.bat
11. Once the phone is back up – unplug your phone from your computer
12. Navigate using the volume buttons to “BOOTLOADER” and select it by pressing the “power” button, then navigate to “RECOVERY” and select it the same way
13. Once in recovery (black background with red triangle), press “volume-up” button combined with the “power” button, and then navigate using the volume buttons to “Apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it by pressing the “power” button
14. You should see a new menu – use the optical touch button to navigate and press it to select the following:
a. wipe data/factory reset
a. wipe cache partition
15. Use the optical touch button to navigate and press it to select “install zip from sdcard”:
b. Select “choose zip from sdcard” and then select the custom ROM you’ve placed on the sdcard
16. Use the “power” button to go back, and select “reboot system now”
(Did all the above without a GC in my phone - and I have a branded phone)
It would be great if some experts could comment on it thanks

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback.
Running cracking.bat and step1 have worked?
[Cause I think I got this error only when I tried to run the update.zip without doing step1 (Which I think is responsible for rooting the recovery)]
and what do you mean by downgrade to 2.1? Did you mean running the 1.31 RUU?
i have been trying to root my phone for about 3 days now . i have so many damn files and pages and websites going i am NOW totally confused .
who on these boards has an easy to understand step 1 through whatever to ROOTED tutorial ?
please i am begging for this !
Cheers
below didnt work for me ..
I never get this

You ain't gonna get this, cause your Legend is running HBOOT > 1.XX
You need use VISIONary and temproot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11863394&postcount=2
Still, I agree that all the info on how to root the Legend is a bit fragmented.

Did you run step1-windows.bat with a GoldCard in your phone?
Because I've found that only phones with the following CIDs won't need a GC (I have K18 and that's why I didn't need a GC):
cidnum: HTC__032
cidnum: HTC__A07
cidnum: HTC__K18
cidnum: HTC__N34
cidnum: HTC__Y13

Never tried the method posted in this topic, and I I'm assuming that's what you're trying. Have you created a goldcard? Is you're Legend branded?
Do a search and you'll find all the info you need.

Until you get this fixed, on CM (which your signature implies you have) when you reboot the device you can choose normal/bootloader/recovery.
Or you can always connect the mobile to your comp, and with adb issue the following:
adb reboot [bootloader|recovery]

What "adb reboot [bootloader|recovery]" means is:
adb reboot (to normally reboot the phone)
or
adb reboot bootloader (to reboot into bootloader mode)
or
adb reboot recovery (to reboot into recovery mode)
The [] is "optional arguments" and the | is "or" (it's the standard way of writing commands and options in computers)
About LEGEIMG.zip method - it's a way to flash RUU ROMs, so it's not related to your problem.
About the update.zip you have on your sdcard, it's for the recovery menu? (Blayo's fake flash) because if so, I think when you're in recovery you'll need "vol up" + "power" to choose the update.zip, and that means that you're in trouble...
So you can: repair the volume buttons -or- SOFF your phone and then you'll be able to flash a CWM recovery (and you wouldn't need the update.zip anymore) -or- wait for someone else to post more ways to bypass the volume buttons usage.

Wait, you're saying that the phone o/s can't start? what happens when you start it normally?
If the phone doesn't start in normal mode, maybe you can reset to factory settings by running in fastboot mode:
fastboot erase userdata

Hey guys, I recently acquired an EVO 3D in a trade deal and even though I don't want it (I plan on selling it but the cash deal + EVO 3D was worthy), I ended up being hellbent on rooting it last night. Success. Great, I threw Cyanogenmod7 on there and realized I'll have to undo the root/ROM to sell it later. I used what I believe is referred to as the REVOLUTIONARY method (using HTCDev.com, some terminal commands on my Mac, etc.)
Anyhow, didn't think it would be hard to undo what I did and I guess I was wrong. Let me tell you what I've tried so far.
I've tried using the PG86IMG.zip flash and nothing. No option (VOL UP or VOL DOWN) to even TRY installing it. Just quickly flashes the green text "No Image!" under each category (it goes too fast for me to read it) and I'm back at the boot menu. I've tried using different copies of the PG86IMG.zip with the same results (latest site acquired from: Goo-inside me, or something like that).
I've also tried using the RUU*.exe method on a Windows 7 machine. I've installed the drivers, everything checks out just fine until it actually tried to update the ROM. What happens here is that the phone reboots (as expected) and though the splash screen is different (black background with silver/gray hTc logo, semi-reflected) from the usual splash screen (white background with hTc in green), nothing happens. The software on the Windows 7 machine says "Waiting for bootloader" - which never shows up. Then it quickly gives me an error stating that the USB cable between the PC and the phone needs to be checked. Of course, there's no disconnect anywhere in the cables.
Please help! I planned on selling this device but if it's stuck in Cyanogenmod7, especially with no Google apps (couldn't get Gapps*.zip to work but whatever, not really concerned about that right now), there's no way I could sell this thing. I'm fairly knowledgeable in the basics of these matters as I have a rooted EVO 4G as well.
Anyone wanna buy an EVO 3D? HAHA
you could always flash a stock rooted rom .
You've gotta relock through adb before running the RUU.exe; then it'll work.
Hit the thanks if I helped
Here's another problem: I can't get back into Clockwork Mod Recovery (so I don't know how to flash another ROM on there). If I hold VOL DOWN while powering up, it starts automatically loading PG86IMG.zip. Then I get the options FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIM LOCK, and IMAGE CRC.
Trying to enter recovery reboots to the splash screen and it gets stuck there.
How would I lock it using ADB?

It's because of the pg86img.zip you can delete/move it away from the root of your sd card and get back into recovery... but you shouldn't need to, follow these steps:
1) Turn off phone
2) Hold power+vol down
3) Choose fastboot
4) Plug into your PC if you're not already
5) When you see FASTBOOT USB on the phone screen go back to your command prompt where you have your adb.exe, fastboot.exe, etc.
6) Type: " fastboot oem lock "
7) Aaaand you're done w/ the relocking go crazy and run your RUU.exe, don't reboot the phone or anything just run your RUU while your phone's still in HBOOT.
Edit: Oh, the adb I was talking about would kind of make everything easier; in command prompt: adb reboot bootloader AND THEN fastboot oem lock
Two steps, mhm.
I'm on it! Standby...
Okay, the adb stuff - can I do that from terminal in Mac? I tried doing it while in the appropriate folder where all that adb stuff is and I typed: adb reboot bootloader (ERROR: command not found), then I tried just: reboot bootloader (not permitted). I did try: ./fastboot-mac oem lock (successful. header now says *** RELOCKED ***).
Tried the RUU*.exe stuff on the Windows machine while in that state and again an alleged problem with the USB connection...
Sounds like we're close?
BAM! Got it. You put me on the right track with that last post. RUU still wouldn't do the reversion even though I had some drivers installed on Windows so I had to find some other drivers (some HTC3*.exe file, 13MB) and ended up running those for it to recognize the phone.
+1 to you, sir. Thank you so much!
Glad it all turned out well.
Hi Everyone / Anyone,
Got this HTC ONE X+ (64GB) (Not AT&T as only has "HTC" logo on phone) phone from another user who i think spoil the
phone with Cyanogenmod as it keeps reboot and stuck in CYM screen with spining arrows.
Read some posts here and managed to reboot into recovery screen and get some data. It cannot charge properly,
so flash with latest TWRP v2.6.3.0 and now can fully charge to LED turns green.
Some of info of this phone are:

My problem now its seem the HBOOT is very new and not able to find suitable version of 2.18.707.5 image.
Tried run RUU from various sources (WWE, EUROPE,..) cannot flash into the phone. I do not know where
is the reliable ones now and not sure what's next? Have used Hansoon AIO kit and WinDroid, these are helpful
but my phone status does not allow the kit to execute fully.
Now the CYM screen is gone and only show HTC logo screen and cannot proceed to boot further. Of course it
seem the ROM (Custom or stock) are gone as previous user did not make any backup and spoil it.
Summary of what i can do with the phone now:
Reboot phone into recovery mode or Fastboot. Can link PC and phone show FastBoot USB. Can fastboot to phone for lock / unlock.
Observed feedback from TWRP there is no root folder as suggest to install SuperUSR but not sure is it successful.
HELP, Need advice and help to find and load back factory stock ROM or any version suitable for it.
Think it does not have a proper root loaded too.
Installing a custom ROM will be easy
Wipe all excluding the Internal Storage from TWRP
Just "adb push" the ROM file to the SDCARD once the installation is done
boot into fastboot
flash the kernel from the fastboot........
that should get ur phone booted refer to this tutorial for installing a custom ROM

in the link regarding "installing a custom ROM" instruction, it seem the phone status permit booting into the phone to "Enable USB Debuggin"
However my case now it will not boot into the normal phone interfaces, it will stuck at "HTC" logo screen and nothing happens afterwards.
I can not only access the Fastboot / Recovery / HBOOT screen of the phone. Any normal reboot will stuck in HTC screen.
also running "adb devices" does not detect the phone and report a serial no. It did run and show opening a port no. 50xx and end successfully.
please advice
i install the Android SDK and followed all instructions carefully but "adb devices" did not return any serial no. of the phone.
in fact the result return blank, nothing is listed.
NOTE the phone can only be connected via USB through recovery mode in Fastboot USB link.
Even when reboot the phone as normal while showing the stucked HTC screen logo, the usb link cannot be established.
please advice.
In CUSTOM Recovery the USB debugging is enabled by default...so that step of booting into phone and enabling the USB debugging doesn't matter...
the device won't get recognized if u had not installed the HTC drivers...
try installing the latest drivers from here
Install this and try
Code:
adb devices
And what are u planning on do install a custom ROM or Flash the Stock Nandroid backup from the thread I provided.....????
I can only help u knowing what u are trying to do.....

I am trying to get this phone to get to normal functional phone for any region.
Since i got this phone from previous owner, think without any proper ROM backup and got loop in cym logo so am trying to bring this phone "alive" again. It seem not getting anywhere or my procedure is wrong with lack of real ROM in sdcard. At least i managed to figure out somehow get the latest CWM or TWRP and let the phone charge fully. Previously it always show "low battery to flash" message when powered using [ POWER + VOL ] combination.
Not trying to do anything funny to this phone, rather to try my best revive it back to a fully functional phone as the original HTC ONE X+ 64GB International edition. Think this phone is a ASIA WWE edition as it bought locally and with the HTC printed silkscreen, not AT&T.
Sincerely hope u or anyone can help me. I will try to use the "adb device" command again, seem with this way to communicate and push ROM inside the phone, nothing else can get it pass the HTC logo screen now... I am puzzled using Fastboot seem communicating ok with the phone but not adb command.... Keep update....

These are the latest HTC drivers can u try this and report whether ur device is recognized in adb recovery mode......
Please try by uninstalling the previous driver u had.........
BTW is it Windows 8.......????????
ok noted but how to uninstall the previous HTC drivers ?
by the way, i also noted that if left the phone to boot after power on, connecting it to PC will be detected but windows cannot install any drivers to it. it will be recognized as HTC MP DEVICE or something similar but with unknown drivers. This normal and ok?
Yesterday feedback in POWER + VOL mode, phone can be recognized as HTC device without USB driver device installation problem.
mine now using Win 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Ed. with latest service packs and updates. Have another PC running Win Vista Biz 32-Bit ed. but not using this one as slower and many software think will affect the phone n PC connection.
Earlier before your help, have found and load TWRP version 2.6.3.0 whereas now the version is 2.4.4.0, will earlier or this 2.4xx version be any difference and affect the connection with adb?
Later will try again the USB drivers and other set up and adb too, not free to do it now...
keep update....

From the control panel OFC
If u had installed HTC drivers u must be able to see it like this uninstall that...
O Haa haa )
Blunder me ! That's right ! Think bit exhaust after a few sleepless nights figuring out why and hows on this phone....
Now that u mentioned on HTC Driver, before u I have read post on recommended SDK Manager installation.
It is suggested to install SDK Manager with only "Android SDK Platform Tools" + "Google USB Driver" only.
did install these and later use your method to install with "USE AN EXISTING IDE" option of "installer_r22.3-windows.exe" (latest version)
But now did not see the SDK MANAGER program in Control Panel - Programs list... Should have uninstalled.
Think should uninstall the following:
[Windows Mobile Device Center], [Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update]?
These 2 should be default software of windows or HTC Sync for sync with mobile / usb devices...
Also have installed "Universal Adb Driver" from other post too, think to uninstall this too...
Any recommendation?

SDK Manager wont show up on Control panel AFAIK....
it will be a zip file which u have to extract.....
in the extracted folder u will be able to see android-sdk-windows\platform-tools from where u have to open the cmd to execute the abd/fastboot commands
I have the setup of android-sdk-windows and the HTC drivers I pointed to....
It works flawlessly so i recommend to uninstall Universal Adb driver since that isn't helping ur phone recognized anyways.....
Install the Drivers I pointed to and try wether ur phone is getting recognized....:fingers-crossed:
Note : Alternately u can try this installer also which is a small package with the necessary adb and fastboot files......

these drivers can be there ...they are or the installation of bluetooth drivers for our phones I guess....
Just uninstall the Universal USB driver .....
If you have HTC Sync I beleive u must be having the HTC driver as I showed on the Screen shot.....
Anyways if u dont see that in the control panel install the one I gave.....U must be fine
ok these r my latest updates:
1) Uninstall HTC SYNC, HTC DRIVER, HTC BMP DRIVER, IPT INSTALLER (Internet Pass-Thru), Universal ADB Driver
2) Install latest Java JRE 7u51 (32 & 64 Bit), Java JDK 7u51 (32 & 64 Bit), detected no older java versions, reboot PC;
3) installer_r22.3-windows.exe (for SDK Manager), created C:\AndroidSDK for SDK Manager and Platform_tools, uninstall default SDK Manager in C:\Program files, Reboot PC;
4) Created Start SDK.bat and run from desktop successfully into directory C:\AndroidSDK\Platform_tools, reboot PC;
5) Install latest HTC Driver using provided link and downloaded with filename HTCDriver_4.10.0.001.msi , reboot PC
Next is to test the USB connection to phone, Q?
1) My phone cannot power on to normal JellyBean OS (as think no ROM);
2) Can only ON to POWER + VOL-DWN mode, to HBOOT > FastBoot, is this right way to test as given in the instruction of http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213910
2A) If need to let PC detect a working phone and install drivers, have another model [HTC ONE X], can connect USB to this working phone first to test drivers / USB?
Pause here before proceed as concern might spoil the flow of progress if taken wrong step before testing ADB command, please advice.

Absolutely Fine........
What I meant in While in TWRP connect ur phone to PC
double click on your Start SDK shortcut and in the CMD type
Code:
adb devices
Ur result must be like this
YES, it did show the device listed with serial no.
Now i into the [Recovery Installation] section and at the BACKUP part (pt. 15), now should i also tick Recovery + Cache to perform full backup of actual ROM? (this seem not applicable to me, is it?)
So I just spent 5...yes 5 hours tring to root my HTC desire 601. After many img files that failed and lastly a CWM for a 4,2,2....i was told (somewhere mixed in google and my open tabs) that I need it for 4.2.2 .... I finally got the phone to boot up in a LOOKS LIKE I DID THE RIGHT STEPS menu "philz_touch_6.12.8-zara.img" but it gave me Status 7...hence the question which CWM do i need.
It's a HTC Desire 601. And.Ver.4.4.2

officially 24 hours spent on this....i dont know what im doing wrong. YES i am reading but now i just feel overwhelmed and illiterate.
A couple of weeks ago I bricked my HTC Inspire with the ACE toolkit. I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to get it back. At some point I just kept getting the HTC white screen and/or bootloader. While I thought I had ClockworkMod recovery in place, I don't. I've tried copying a PD98IMG.zip directly to the SD card. And, HBOOT will read the PD98IMG.zip, it just doesn't seem to apply it.
So this is what I have done so far to fix it:
1. Installed full Android SDK. With some special USB drivers, I am able to get Froyo files fastboot flashall & its says boot & system were both written successfully.
2. When I reboot the phone it starts the HTC Recovery. Its says "This application will set your phone to factory new condition. It is designed for AT&T Branded HTC Inspire only. Using it...blah,blah,blah....Hit OK to continue or Cancel to reboot to recovery?".
3. So I click OK and it says Running "gfree -s on -c CWS_0001"....Please wait. It goes thru this and seems to install OK & says Success GFree has returned your device to s-on and CID: CWS_001. Press OK to copy factory image to your SD card and continue the process..." So I let it do that with an OK.
4. At the end of the Factory Reset install, it says "Success Your device is s-on and a factory RUU has been copied to your SD card. Pressing OK will reboot you to HBOOT where you will be prompted to go ahead with the RUU install. Press vol-up when prompted." When I look in the Android window behind this message it says: "cp: can't stat 'data/rom.zip' no such file or directory. Copying complete".
5. If I hit OK, one of 3 things happens: a.) HBOOT is shown b.) HTC white screen stays on or c.) it tries to do the Factory Reset install once more.
This is where I am stuck.
6. No matter what I have been able to continue getting Android-SDK to talk to it with fastboot commands using the special USB drivers.
I feel like I am just missing something on this.
UPDATE
I am able to connect to the device with Droid Explorer.
Please, if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
