A couple of weeks ago I bricked my HTC Inspire with the ACE toolkit. I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to get it back. At some point I just kept getting the HTC white screen and/or bootloader. While I thought I had ClockworkMod recovery in place, I don't. I've tried copying a PD98IMG.zip directly to the SD card. And, HBOOT will read the PD98IMG.zip, it just doesn't seem to apply it.
So this is what I have done so far to fix it:
1. Installed full Android SDK. With some special USB drivers, I am able to get Froyo files fastboot flashall & its says boot & system were both written successfully.
2. When I reboot the phone it starts the HTC Recovery. Its says "This application will set your phone to factory new condition. It is designed for AT&T Branded HTC Inspire only. Using it...blah,blah,blah....Hit OK to continue or Cancel to reboot to recovery?".
3. So I click OK and it says Running "gfree -s on -c CWS_0001"....Please wait. It goes thru this and seems to install OK & says Success GFree has returned your device to s-on and CID: CWS_001. Press OK to copy factory image to your SD card and continue the process..." So I let it do that with an OK.
4. At the end of the Factory Reset install, it says "Success Your device is s-on and a factory RUU has been copied to your SD card. Pressing OK will reboot you to HBOOT where you will be prompted to go ahead with the RUU install. Press vol-up when prompted." When I look in the Android window behind this message it says: "cp: can't stat 'data/rom.zip' no such file or directory. Copying complete".
5. If I hit OK, one of 3 things happens: a.) HBOOT is shown b.) HTC white screen stays on or c.) it tries to do the Factory Reset install once more.
This is where I am stuck.
6. No matter what I have been able to continue getting Android-SDK to talk to it with fastboot commands using the special USB drivers.
I feel like I am just missing something on this.
UPDATE
I am able to connect to the device with Droid Explorer.
Please, if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Hi,
Yesterday my non-rooted (and non recovery enabled) Hero received an update from HTC which required a reboot. Since then the reboot can't get any further than the HTC welcome screen. I have now exhausted all attempts to revive it. I have tried the following:
1. Reboot into FASTBOOT mode and select <MENU> to reset the device
-didn't do anything but reboot phone to hanging HTC screen
2. Connect USB cable to PC, and run the RUU update
r-recognises the phone is connected but crashes when tries to install image
3. Extract rom.zip from RUU file and load on SDcard as HEROIMG.zip
- booting into HBOOT mode, screen just says that HEROIMG.zip not found
4. Created a different HEROIMG.zip from one of the custom ROMs
-same outcome as in bullet 3
5. Tried to connect to the phone using adb
-either when phone is in HBOOT mode or FASTBOOT USB mode, command "adb devices" just returns a blank, even though PC recognises phone is connected- other adb commands also fail with device not found
I'm now struggling for ideas of what to try next. Can't believe this is the death of the phone. Any advice?
Grateful for any ideas! Thanks
firstly, this is Q&A, post in the right section.
secondly, try this.

Hey guys, I recently acquired an EVO 3D in a trade deal and even though I don't want it (I plan on selling it but the cash deal + EVO 3D was worthy), I ended up being hellbent on rooting it last night. Success. Great, I threw Cyanogenmod7 on there and realized I'll have to undo the root/ROM to sell it later. I used what I believe is referred to as the REVOLUTIONARY method (using HTCDev.com, some terminal commands on my Mac, etc.)
Anyhow, didn't think it would be hard to undo what I did and I guess I was wrong. Let me tell you what I've tried so far.
I've tried using the PG86IMG.zip flash and nothing. No option (VOL UP or VOL DOWN) to even TRY installing it. Just quickly flashes the green text "No Image!" under each category (it goes too fast for me to read it) and I'm back at the boot menu. I've tried using different copies of the PG86IMG.zip with the same results (latest site acquired from: Goo-inside me, or something like that).
I've also tried using the RUU*.exe method on a Windows 7 machine. I've installed the drivers, everything checks out just fine until it actually tried to update the ROM. What happens here is that the phone reboots (as expected) and though the splash screen is different (black background with silver/gray hTc logo, semi-reflected) from the usual splash screen (white background with hTc in green), nothing happens. The software on the Windows 7 machine says "Waiting for bootloader" - which never shows up. Then it quickly gives me an error stating that the USB cable between the PC and the phone needs to be checked. Of course, there's no disconnect anywhere in the cables.
Please help! I planned on selling this device but if it's stuck in Cyanogenmod7, especially with no Google apps (couldn't get Gapps*.zip to work but whatever, not really concerned about that right now), there's no way I could sell this thing. I'm fairly knowledgeable in the basics of these matters as I have a rooted EVO 4G as well.
Anyone wanna buy an EVO 3D? HAHA
you could always flash a stock rooted rom .
You've gotta relock through adb before running the RUU.exe; then it'll work.
Hit the thanks if I helped
Here's another problem: I can't get back into Clockwork Mod Recovery (so I don't know how to flash another ROM on there). If I hold VOL DOWN while powering up, it starts automatically loading PG86IMG.zip. Then I get the options FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIM LOCK, and IMAGE CRC.
Trying to enter recovery reboots to the splash screen and it gets stuck there.
How would I lock it using ADB?

It's because of the pg86img.zip you can delete/move it away from the root of your sd card and get back into recovery... but you shouldn't need to, follow these steps:
1) Turn off phone
2) Hold power+vol down
3) Choose fastboot
4) Plug into your PC if you're not already
5) When you see FASTBOOT USB on the phone screen go back to your command prompt where you have your adb.exe, fastboot.exe, etc.
6) Type: " fastboot oem lock "
7) Aaaand you're done w/ the relocking go crazy and run your RUU.exe, don't reboot the phone or anything just run your RUU while your phone's still in HBOOT.
Edit: Oh, the adb I was talking about would kind of make everything easier; in command prompt: adb reboot bootloader AND THEN fastboot oem lock
Two steps, mhm.
I'm on it! Standby...
Okay, the adb stuff - can I do that from terminal in Mac? I tried doing it while in the appropriate folder where all that adb stuff is and I typed: adb reboot bootloader (ERROR: command not found), then I tried just: reboot bootloader (not permitted). I did try: ./fastboot-mac oem lock (successful. header now says *** RELOCKED ***).
Tried the RUU*.exe stuff on the Windows machine while in that state and again an alleged problem with the USB connection...
Sounds like we're close?
BAM! Got it. You put me on the right track with that last post. RUU still wouldn't do the reversion even though I had some drivers installed on Windows so I had to find some other drivers (some HTC3*.exe file, 13MB) and ended up running those for it to recognize the phone.
+1 to you, sir. Thank you so much!
Glad it all turned out well.
EVO 3d cdma 1.4 s-off with cwm was running cyanogen 7. went into rom manager app and super user had an update. updated ok then froze and now stuck at HTC load screen.
1. with sd card containing PG86IMG.zip: regular power up - hangs on HTC screen
2 with sd card containing PG86IMG.zip: HBoot - device ask to update (yes) tries to update (1)bootloader ... sucesss i get an ok then when prompts me to reboot it hangs at HTC again.
3. no sd card: regular power up hangs at HTC
4. no sd card: hboot will not let me go into recovery or factory data reset, just short vibrate then fastboot screen
5. blank sd card: scrolls down no img or wrong PG86IMG then after will not go into recovery or factory data reset, short vibrate then fastboot screen.
*can not get to usb debugging stuck at HTC screen
*connect to computer phone: fastboot to fastboot usb
*@command prompt,
6.adb devices,reboot-bootloader,remount, etc - no devices found. guess usb debugging needs to be on.
7.fastboot devices - i get serial #
8.fastboot flash recovery recovery.img - gets FAILED (remote not allowed) ... tried different recoveries ... named/renamed all the same
9. fastboot erase cache ... ok
10. fastboot reboot-bootloader ... ok
any ideas what i should try next?

Damn, that's wild. Just from updating superuser!
The next thing I would try is running an RUU with the phone in fastboot mode, or running an RUU as a PG86IMG.zip. Hopefully one of those will run.

progress. the latest RUU broke through.
seems like i am now unlocked 1.5 hboot s-off.
I think i will run stock til cm9 beta hits.
I'm glad it worked for you. Since you're still s off, you can downgrade your hboot back to 1.4 if you want to. No real reason to though, other than it won't say locked.

have you tried a different cable?
I'm not sure if it's a good suggestion because your also having issues with RUU zips but its worth a try.
Step-by-step guide for unbricking a Photon from an ota update brick and recovering from a "failed to boot 2" or "failed to boot 3" error when booting.
Also, big note, this is NOT for 2.3.4 users!
EXTREME thanks to peetr_ for ALL of this info and getting myself and probably countless others fixed. All the links are files he uploaded personally and all these instructions come directly from him. Be sure to thank the crap out of him if you get your device fixed through this method.
1) Make sure you have all the motorola drivers (I assume you do otherwise you wouldn't have been able to brick your device).
2) Make sure you have a FULL ass charge. Not 90%, but FULL! I know it doesn't charge when it's in the failed to boot mode. I bought an external battery wall charger from Overstock for under $10 shipped, I suggest you do the same.
3) Enter Fastboot mode by holding the volume up key while powering on your device.
4) Connect your phone via USB to your computer.
5) Open command line on your computer (Windows key + "R", then type in "cmd") or (Windows 7: Open the start menu and type "cmd").
6) Download and extract this file: (uploaded by peetr_) http://d-h.st/xl8 (if no hyperlink, copy and paste the previous text in your browser). There should be a "boot.img" file and a "recovery.img" file.
7) It is VERY helpful to have all your files in one directory, all your fastboot files, ADB and all that jazz should be in the same directory as well as all the files you've downloaded to flash.
8) In command line type in "moto-fastboot flash boot boot.img" (assuming you followed step 7). It will say "sending" and then "writing" and should only take a few seconds. Your device will say some things too. After this, restart your device and your phone should boot in for the first time since you bricked it. (That was the greatest thing to watch after being bricked for 3 weeks!)
9) You're not quite out of the woods yet, 4G and WiFi will not work yet. Hold the power button up while powering on once again to enter fastboot mode.
10) Once again in command line (assuming your phone is still hooked up) type in "moto-fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and it will send and write.
11) If your phone wasn't previously rooted or if somehow you lost root go ahead and root it now (just google the oneclick method).
12) Download these modules http://d-h.st/aAi and store them on your device, SD card or internal memory.
13) Download the RootExplorer app and navigate to the zip on your device, set it to Read/Write on the top of the app and hold the zip down until you get a menu, hit permissions and set them.
14) Hold volume up while powering device on and you should get into Bootstrap recovery.
15) Hit "install zip from SD card" and navigate to the file and install it.
16) Boot the device normally and congratulations! You now have working WiFi and 4G on an electrify flashed Photon! OTA updates will NOT work and you will NOT be able to unlock the bootloader via pudding for Custom ROM installs. If you hate blur like I do, download "GO Launcher" or my personal favorite "SPB Shell".
I appreciate your effort. Just highlighting some inaccuracies.
This is only for failed to boot (2 or 3) after ota 2.3.5 update. Not after flashing Electrify sbf. You never flashed that.
And you cannot flash modules with android recovery option in bootloader menu, you had to install bootstrap recovery or copy with root explorer and set permissions one by one.
And give there a big warning, that this is not for 2.3.4 users.
Other than this, it's good.
Edited! Hopefully it's good enough to help some people now.

Hello. I just got a HTC ONE X+ yesterday as my first smart phone, iv been using a basic nokia for around 20years lol I choose the HTC mainly because I saw a review of one using the Viper+ rom and love to customise my computers so thought this was right up my street.
I sat down today watched a couple of youtube videos & read a few tutorials, I unlocked the phone through the cmd and did the reset, all went smoothly as far as i was aware, I then went into settings and there was no developers options to select, I dumped the rom onto the storage, and went into the fastboot again since im following a step by step guide, I did the backup, wiped Wipe Cache, Dalvik, then when I went to Factory Reset it said failed, I thought ok ill try again after system, did that went back to FR again said failed. hhmm ok, went ahead with installing Viper and it started installing and said fail. so I went to reboot but told me their is no OP any more, so I tried to do a restore but it shows an empty folder, so now it only boots into the white HTC logo screen and sits there. I can get into the fastboot menu still, but when connected to a laptop it doesn't show up as a device so I cant view any folders or anything.
does anyone know where it went wrong and a way to correct this? it would be a big help to me, thank you
-Marc
you didn't say what recovery you got I suggest you to install TWRP 2.7.1.0 from here:
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/enrc2b/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-enrc2b.img
when you download that .img file install this toolkit, that you will download from here:
https://mega.co.nz/#!ZExEEBJL!jKoitltieeOIb8JV-cjqw9i4ldV1yXFUAf-q1W8-UUE
It's easy very easy to install you have option to install "Your own recovery" select that and press flash and select your .img that you download up, it will say in cmd 2 times Okay.
But before you flash, when you unzip this toolkit from .rar put it in "C:\" not in "C:\something\something & other things" becouse toolkit won't found .img.
After that you download 2.1.1 rom from here:
http://uploaded.net/file/tqmae0zd
and when you download the rom he will be named like ViperX_2.1.1 or something like that you rename it to just viperx.
When you did all that go into recovery wipe all, connect your phone to a PC go to device manager to portable devices and disable HTC One X+ if you don't do that adb won't recognized the phone. Then in recovery go to Advacned - Adb sideloade press that button and on PC through toolkit in section Extras select first option adb sideload press run, and select viperx.zip rom in toolkit folder or in "C:\" where you put it. Sideload will begin counting to 100% when it finish, rom will run automatically, rest is easy just next next pick what you want.
P.S
Don't forget to install latest htc drivers, and latest drivers for usb to avoid some conflicts becouse when sideloading adb won't recognized sometimes, that happends.
Thanks for the reply, I would of liked to have given this ago but now the tool kit keeps saying enable USB debugging first, which I cant do....anyway to do this without the original OS installed?
First of all there is THANKS button in left corner under avatar, so you can click on it instead of saying Thanks.
Second you don't need usb debugging mode in recovery go into recovery wipe all like I write in my first reply, install drivers first for HTC and do everything like i told you up there.
