I do have a question that I cannot find an answer for;
Does the Sony RIC do any other protection besides preventing /system writeability?

It doesnt seem so
It opens the ability to writing on system via root, so its only a problem if you accidentaly hit grant on supersu (or have grant by default)

Thanks.
I'm currently using the file explorer that is in the recovery but that really is no permanent solution as I need to reboot each time I have to work in /system and no other app can be used.
If there is no safety risk I will proceed disabling RIC then.

Anyone know if D6503 will work in Jamaica? I'm travelling to Jamaica in April and am debating between buying a travel pack through Fido or just buying a prepaid Sim card in Jamaica and throwing it in the phone. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

Hi guys,
I recently bought the Z2 and have some questions related with root and unlocked bootloader etc.
I previously had Xperia SL, so I have something or an idea about something
Just wanted to know few things.
1) what happens if I root or unlock bootloader? Is there any feature loss.
2) can I lock the bootloader again once unlocked?
3) can I downgrade my os version. I am on 4.4.2 now.
I know lollipop is coming but I will love to use the existing Roms even after upgrade.
Thanks

Subscribe thread for root or unlocked bootloader carrier locked

As the title say's I'm creating this thread for all us carrier locked Xperia S owners to subscribe too. this way we can subscribe to this thread and keep it updated on the latest news of root or unlocking the boot-loader.
YOU CAN'T ROOT LOCKED BOOTLOADERS
I will post new info when I hear something new. Feel free to add news as well. Lets just keep the comments about the topic. No need to fill it with junk that doesn't belong here.
Maybe true maybe not. Silly tech support, they don't have clue. Should have known better.
I talked with sony today and they assured me my rogers branded phone will be getting ICS and the updates will be around may 18th. I kept telling them if my phone is branded to rogers it can't happen as rogers needs time to add their apps and stuff. again sony said they are doing it different with the xperia s and all phones will be getting ics at the same time. may 18th.
so i don't believe them but maybe if more people call we can get a better idea when it's coming.
If you call and hear something different please share in the thread.
Now can someone stick this please? And maybe write YOU CAN'T ROOT LOCKED BOOTLOADERS in big red letters in the OP.

Don't you think that will change in the future?
That's what the thread is for, news about unlocking un-unlockable bootloaders or rooting without it.
I needed this thread XD Thank you mate, Im subscribed now to know inmediatly when I will be able to root my phone!
however it is a bit annoying If this thread is filled with useless posts, just as my one at this moment. there isnt any way to subscribe only to editions in the first message?
I just thought I would shed a little ray of hope here
Apparently there is a way to root with locked bootloaders for official ICS on the Arc S, Ray and Neo V
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600728
So maybe when we get ICS we can root without unlocking the bootloader
Yeah, the problem is when we will get ICS....we want root now! xD
Got phone from Orange, locked to Orange. Locked bootloader.
Asked for unlock key, threatened to leave.
Received unlock key. Phone unlocked. Surprise - Bootloader unlockable after restart *yipee*
Left Orange for good.
Ok I just had a thought and would like your feedback.
I have my xperia sim unlocked.
what im thinking is putting in my none rogers sim,(my other sim is smart, go Philippines).
then updating my phone with sony software and when it say's i have the latest and ask if i want to repair it. select yes and maybe it will the n download another version of the software because it knows the phone is sim unlocked.
what yeah think? would that be even possible to have the software change the ability to have the phone say yes to unlock boot loader.
Not a chance!!!
The bootloader is as it says
"a bootloader"
That means it is a seperate part of the operating system.
When you update/repair your normal running rom/operating system that is the ONLY part that gets updated/repaired.
Your bootloader is never touched

Cool, what does it mean for us looked down users?
Replied from my little computer, Xperia S.
Not much, since I have no idea what to do with it... it's basically that I found the "test point" pin, and that it still behaves in the same way as it does the the 2011 locked Sony phones.
However, that's the simple part, now we need to wait for the unlock tokens to become available or however the old way worked on the old phones.
UPD: no, it looks like the permissions are correct on stock rom, so it won't work.

Can I be the first to ask? Thanks for your offer to share wisdom!
(this is a repost in kind, but since no one seems to know.. and I tried googling it, but no success)
How to determine what your SoC is, this is my question.
Not what your manufacturer website tells u, or some tech site for that matter, or even some of these apps available that give such information.
For example, tried the Antutu 4 which has the most recent update. It tells me my C6802 (Z Ultra) is MSM8274.
But I tried many others, like CPU-Z, CPU/RAM/Identifier... they tell me it is MSM8974.
The one with latest update (Antutu, updated yesterday) tells me that it is MSM8274
The one with second newest update is CPU /RAM/ DEVICE Identifier, with updated version August 30th (still very recent) and it tells ms MSM8974
Really old ones, like updates from February, dont even recognise the name, and tells me that it is ARMv7 Processir rev 0(v71)
Why I want to know is because even Sony won't know if it is 8274 or 8974 inside...
CONCLUSION
unless Antutu, which is very popular, works on a very different level and decides what SoC it is using by reading something from deep within android system files, my guess is that these apps decide SoC names based on manufacturer's published information.
Am I wrong?
And short of me getting a screwdriver and actually seeing it, is there a better, more accurate way to find out exactly what my SoC is? Where do I look inside, not hardware wise, but system wise?
UPDATE
Thanks
looked into build prop, and found out that my C6802 does indeed use MSM8974.
Now I know it has LTE radio, but just switched off, like Nexus 4

You can definitely find everything you want to know about the phone.
If you are rooted then this would be like a breeze. If not then ask someone to send you the same.

Nothing sure yet, build.prop can be a mistake, they simply create one build.prop and use a script updater for modify it and only modify the model of the device. CPU-Z tell it come from "flattened device tree" but it take info from the build.prop and Antutu update it from it's online database
Then here again, the Nexus 4 have LTE but the antenna wasn't designed for, so N4 users have poor 4G reception compare to full fledge LTE devices.
But I sincerely hope we can enable 4G in a near futur ^^

It's nice to see Japanese G2 users like you in the xda! LG hasn't advertised at all so there must be really few people using this in Japan.
I've tested thecubed's IOroot10 and found that working only partly.
The docomo variant has advanced security measures. Locking the sh and remounting even in the adb root. Just as the Japanese LG OptimusG L-01E. See this post for the details.
The bluetooth hotplug method of the OptimusG didn't work neither.:crying:

Yeah, I think there's not so much Japanese G2 users around here at XDA...
Good for you that you already tried some tools working on Docomo variant.
I really would love to try as well but right now I am enjoying the stock OS first...
For now, the only reason why I would love to root the G2 is because of the softkeys.
I really wanted to hide or get rid of them to fully utilize the big beautiful screen...
But since I am still enjoying the stock (and maybe still a little afraid to try to root),
I think I have to deal with the softkeys for now...
Anyway, I will browse the links that you have provided to get sore more info.
Thanks.

EDIT : About rooting
Place the ytiruces_1a in the attached zip , to the /sdcard. Unplug USB and toggle USB debug mode 2 times. Tada! You've got a broken adb root! You can just push and pull anything. Delete the ytiruces_1a in the /sdcard and toggle the debug again to revert.
The adb root shell and remounting is limited due to the TOMOYO Linux security which docomo has included, as seen in the /system/bin/ccs-auditd , which is not present in the other variant's stock rom.

Hi,
Unfortunately, Japanese G2 (DoCoMo) doesn't have the removable battery and microSD card slot as well
But, there is a small dongle included in the box if you want to use a microSD card.
Please see the attached photo.
Also, internal memory is 32GB.

Thanks, updated the OP.
Hey there!
I'm an old iOS user and I finally decided to "convert" to Android, however I made a huge mistake in doing so in Japan thanks to Docomo.
I guess this is the only place on the internet to talk about the Japanese version of LG G2 (aside from japanese internet boards of course) so I want to start off by steaming off some anger on Docomo.
First of all, Quickwindows case, there's only 2 colors for the L-01F; black and white, and due to that the device isn't popular around here, there's aren't any great cases around on the internet.
Second, I had the chance to mess around with the Korean version of this great device, it supports taking pictures with the quickwindow closed, and in the Docomo version we can't (can we? ;o)
Third, again and again, what the heck is wrong with Docomo, why do they have their own Phone app and Phonebook? I understand they wanna force us to use their own cloud services and such, but come on.. at least give us cloud services better than the others..
Fourth, settings menu isn't tabbed, not a big deal, just wondering why.
Edit: Fifth, why the %$#@ did they remove the charger/cable and quadbeat headphones from the package? Seriously, what is Docomo trying to do here ;_;
And that's all folks for my rage here.
If you have any questions about the L-01F please don't hesitate to ask, I'm trying to study this device upside-down before I could start rooting and stuff. (ex-iOSer here:laugh.

Can you not bring it to any Docomo shop and have it unlocked?
As long as it is a legitimate Docomo device, I think they can unlock it for you...
you just need to pay 3150yen...
Thanks for the reply...

Oh ! I didn't know that. can you give me some info about, which documents will I have to take with me to the store ?
I heard that, I have to be a DoCoMo customer, unless they won't do it. is it true ?
sorry for too many questions, don't know much about about these things, It's my 2nd month here.

go directly to the shops and try it...
if one shop does not allow, try others...
some shops are strict, others are not.
you may also try those small shops that carrying or selling not only Docomo but also other carrier's devices as well...
sometimes they are more willing to do those things as long as there is payment involve...
goodluck!

Attached a experimental temp root kit at the OP.

Real or fake? Anyone have any idea?

How to Root your Android Sony Xperia Z3v Easily ?: https://youtu.be/qH89pJLWfKg
Anyone tried this?
It won't work. That video was published in December of 2014. We would know if it worked or not. The thing is that this phone is not an international phone. You will definitely hear about root from here before anywhere else.
If you want to see anything for a root, I suggest you donate for the bounty thread to raise it up.

Already did donate, just something I found on the Web and figured what the hell maybe it's something worth looking at.
Did you try this. I don't think it work
I've spoken to zxz0O0 and he recommended me to try his latest tool since he was able to unlock the D6616 Z3 for T-Mobile. I attempted it but it doesn't work with our D6708, and I'm cooperating with what he'll say for the support.

It works using the shipped firmware .376. I just confirmed with root checker. (@Zxz0O0's method is the one I'm referring to)

No root at the end of the tunnel

I was just wondering why all the other phones have roots except for the Galaxies?
Some say it is because the providers are locking the bootloader. The question is; are those providers locking the Galaxy bootloader only?
Does anyone think this will make people move from Galaxy to other [rootable] models?
Honestly, this is the first Samsung phone in where I don't think you need root. They allow themes, it's awesome on battery, runs really smoothly, and offers a ton of features that work well. The only reason I ever modded my phone was to increase the longevity and add to it's features... something I haven't really needed on this phone. So I doubt it. I hope they come out with Oreo soon...

Just FYI but if you did a search here on XDA you'd discover that the Snapdragon S8 has had root for a few months now. It's doubtful that we'll see an unlocked bootloader though. Search is your friend!

Thanks for the input. I saw the root, however, I'm debating whether to root or not. The version listed there is older than what we have. And, like Mr. eatmeimadanish mentioned I haven't had a need for rooting so far. It's just I miss the nice ROMs that different people were putting up with so many more tweaks and stuff. And, there are some applications that work on rooted phones, which I'm unable to use anymore.

I haven't rooted either. I'm happy with my S8+ as is. Besides, I use Samsung Pay all the time. Also, without an unlocked bootloader there won't be any custom roms.

I did do a search, but couldn't find something specific to Rooting...
But also....this will be an unlocked bootloader so no custom Roms
Was the Galaxy S5 the same? Cant remember if it had an unlocked BL

1) S8 Snapdragon root . It looks like it's been cleaned up quite a bit since the last time I saw it. Keep in mind, it's not the easy process that we used to have, so read, read and then read again. I personally have not done it as I'm happy with my S8+ as is.
2) Correct, no unlocked bootloader = No custom ROMs.
3) No, the S5 bootloader was unlocked, which is why we had some great Roms. I miss MOAR, but life changes, I've moved on.
Off the topic but, I remember u Ramer from the S5 MOAR thread. I had that rom on my s5 also. I love my s8+ as well.

I saw the rooting thread, and even downloaded the files. But I'm hesitating if I should root or not. The thread is closed, which means it's not keeping up with the updates. Although, we all say we're happy with the phone as is. But, are we really?
