Need help with choosing roms - AT&T LG Optimus G

Posted this on a rom thread, when I should've asked here instead I recently got this phone repaired after finding it stored away, hasn't been used since snowjb came out, I like roms with tweaks, like pac roms with good battery life, I haven't done anything to it since it came out which rom would be best for me? looking for an android 5.x one.. not many have screenshots was kinda curious if anyone could point me in the right direction, thanks.

I've had better stability with Candy, but Blisspop is very full featured and fast. Battery is better on candy for me. If I ever get slowed down enough, I plan to try validus.

I have been using BlissPop for the last 2 weeks, it seem to be working great (i also wanted to try out lollipop after being on Beanstalk 4.4 for almost a year).
I will try out Candy if there is any major issue with Blisspop...so far its been good and i am enjoying the new feel of this old phone.

Another ROM recommendation?

I'm still running the original stock VZW/HTC ROM. I know, I know, slow adopter... I'd like to root and go with a ROM that delivers better battery life and a basic debloat. However, nearly every ROM I read about seems to have a major (in my humble opinion) flaw. A non working camera or video camera, non working voicemail notification, malfunctioning signal strength bars, no 4G, etc., etc.
Is my only choice really a Froyo ROM? I'm not willing to stomach any major loss of functionality (or apps), be it phone, camera, calendar, GPS, navigation, various google apps, Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and 4G, working signal strength bars, etc. I guess I am also in the "I prefer Sense" group but also have not given non Sense ROMs any time.
If responding I kindly request a few sentences of explanation/clarification rather than just saying "Get ROM X, it rocks, it is the best". Thanks in advance.
Everything works on most the gb roms, with some needing certain fixes to fix certain things. Gingeritis 3d, with chingys new radio is tits imho
Sent from my TBolt using my f***king thumbs...
Well, I'm not going to give you a few sentences, but I can tell you that I use Gingerth3ory (link in my siggy) and everything works, including vvm as long as you apply the bootable zip fix for that. Before, vvm was the only thing not working.
Camera, videocamera, wifi, 3g, 4g all work. I switched to youmail for vvm because I wanted netflix over stock vvm so that meant a GB ROM.
I highly recommend Droid Theory's latest Senseless Rom. This is the smoothest and quickest ROM of his yet and that is saying something. There is a large mod community if you're interested in that. Most importantly, DT is very responsive and provides great support. He will be coming out with an update very soon to fix the market issue.

Just showing there's been 3-4 other similar posts in the past few hours, just to avoid fragmenting answers or not getting the answer you wanted.
Just follow my link in my signature.
Synergy is the way to go.
Thanks folks.
OK we have votes for Gingeritis 3d, Gingerth3ory and Droid Theory's latest Senseless Rom. Has anyone ran more than one of these? Any important compare/contrast between them? I care much more about stability and battery life over eye candy. Those are my top 2 concerns. If those things are improved over the stock VZW/HTC ROM I should be happy. The biggest problems with this stock ROM for me are maintaining a data connection when switching from 3G to 4G and back. Also the speed of the GPS lock is very slow. How are these things in these recommended ROMs?
(yareally: You posted 2 identical links but mentioned 4 threads. Yes the questions in some of these were related to mine but certainly were not identical request.)
I'm going to venture a guess you haven't actually looked at the threads or the dev's pages. Most have a thread for bug reports. GB ROMs are about as solid as any OTA these days. If you're new to flashing DO NOT, DO NOT use Synergy. It's a frankenstein project with no official stable release and a constant onslaught of nightlies with no end in sight. STAY AWAY FROM NIGHTLIES. Try BAMF. Try Gingeritus. Try Eaton. Try GING3R3DTH3ORY. Try something that's known to work and isn't revised several times a week. From the sounds of it, Eaton might be what you want. It looks and works very much like stock.

last one was a miscopy, there was another one at least on the front page, but I was half asleep at the time. I said 3 to 4 btw, not 4. There have been lots though of rom reccomendation postings though and felt you would get a better idea by reading what other people had asked already.
i'm using Synergy with the "06275r" radio and the dreamKernal. i also have SetCPU on set to "performance". it runs really smooth and the battery life is better then stock.
i've tried pretty much every ROM out there and have had this running for several days now. i like it and will keep it for a tad bit longer(why just a tad? i can't help it.. i like to keep trying new ROM's)

I have to disagree. Just because Synergy is updated every night does not mean you must flash reflash every day. The nightlies have very minor revisions (adding HTC Car Panel, changing the host file for better ad blocking, changing the Market icon color, changing the email splash screen, etc). If you don't need the newest revisions, then don't flash the latest nightly until something comes along that you really want/need. Synergy nightlies aren't released because it is an unstable rom. Quite the contrary. I have tried roms from 4 other devs and Synergy is the fastest & smoothest of them all. The only time I've had lockups or reboots is when I overclocked too much, which would have happened on any rom.
Don't be dissuaded from trying Synergy because there are nightly updates. If anything, that should tell you the devs are committed to making it better.

I don't agree with that and I'll tell you why. Let's say I tell Joe Bob to go try synergy. He does, and downloads who knows what on whatever night. Then he has a problem... Now what? Try to decipher Ziggy's advice? Try another nightly version? As far as I'm concerned nightlies are for developers. I think that because that been the whole point of nightlies from the beginning. I'm pretty sure CM was the first, but even they did that in support of a release candidate aiming towards an official release. I wouldn't tell someone "Go try a CM nightly!" even if they were looking mostly solid. I've read almost all of the thread for synergy. It's hardly a work without error. I don't believe that project is dedicated to producing reliable ROMs. They show no sign of such in any form, be it a release candidate or a final release. It appears to be a few developers tinkering and experimenting, in many cases against the law, and I cannot in good faith suggest someone fresh on the scene jump into one of the most convoluted ROMs for the Thunderbolt.
I've been using nightlies for INC and they've all been stable for the past several months. They just keep adding features. At first it sort of bugged me that I never had the most updated version but then I just lived with staying with my version for several months until I got bored enough to flash the latest.
If nightlies isn't your thing then that's fine but I don't see a reason to tell other users to stay away from them. Generally they *will* have more bugs because the dev's don't thoroughly check the ROM's before they release - they expect the people who flash to find the bugs and then they fix it in the next releases, but after a while all those bugs are gone- then they move to adding a new feature and that may have a bug, and the cycle continues.
But in most cases these bugs are very minor and overall the ROM is superior in performance / battery / features than other ROM's.

Please read what I wrote. I would not tell a NEW user to try a nightly. That would be stupid. The last thing some virgin flasher needs is to flash some nightly that got some new test kernel cooked into and its quirky as hell, or some jazz like that. We ALL wanted our first flash to work and not freeze or crash. I'm telling a NEW user to stay away from nightlies, not the experienced guy. I don't care how stable one night's version might be, or if almost all of them are. They are test beds and you don't know what you're getting night to night. And NO nightly I've ever used has been quirk-free.

Well.. I've had plenty quirk-free. But the Incredible nightlies are more polished than the thunderbolts.
I think you shouldn't tell them not to flash a nightly, just warn them of possible issues and explain to them what they are (and they would see this anyway because every nightly thread I've been to explains this)

if someone is starting a thread like this, reading threads probably ain't in their game plan. I don't give advice to strangers I wouldn't give to a friend. You run something like a version of BAMF and you're running something a dev has hung his hat on. Not so with a nightly because there will be another tomorrow night! Telling a noob to try a nightly, regardless of stability, is like telling your kid to learn to drive behind the wheel of a Kenworth. If something goes wrong, its going to become a bigger deal than it would be if the guy had flashed 2 or 3 ROMs. This seems real obvious to me. Are you forgetting your first experience rooting and flashing ROMs? I'm not gonna warn someone of the dangers of doing something I consider stupid. I will say "If you want to do something stupid, go flash a nightly for your first ROM. If your LUCKY it will all work right. If it doesn't, go fly a kite because you're own your own, bro."
Thanks for the further comments. Let's not try to get too side tracked on one ROM with many nightlies. I definitely prefer to steer clear of a ROM with nightlies. I'd like to let others do all that valuable beta testing and simply benefit from their work. Selfish - sure but uncommon - no.
Just to clarify some personal details that may help with recommendations. I've read many of the posts here from the devs themselves on their ROMs. However, slogging through hundreds of pages on a small handful of ROMs is not my idea of fun... I'm quite computer/phone literate but have not done programming in years. I also work in the software industry. After years of crappy and unstable WinMo devices and plenty of random freezes, resets and data loss, I've found a pretty nice new home with Android. I'm not afraid to experiment, trouble shoot, etc. However, I want a phone to USE much more than to constantly tinker, repair, troubleshoot, etc. I'd like a really mature, stable bulletproof ROM along with the ability to have GB and keep Sense. It is incredibly difficult for me to read the oftentimes massive features lists on the first page of any given ROM thread and distinguish it from other competing offerings. Despite being pretty computer literate, most of those pages are nearly entirely "greek" to me.
Perhaps there is no single best ROM or recommendation but I am going to continue to read all the replies here and hopefully get my choice narrowed down. Of course I realize no ROM choice is permanent. I'll just say again I like to USE my device rather than constantly "tinker".
Cheers.
InfuseTh3ory ... Try it.
Since you like Sense then check out Gingeritis

[Q] WARNING NOOB: Which rom?

DISCLAIMER: This thread contains NOOB questions!
Hi all,
First of all I guess most of you really dislike these kind of threads. But I am reading xda for 2 months now, searching all over the place for some answers. Probably read almost every guide etc. but I really can't get my head around this amount of information. So here I am with the age old question: Which rom should I install?
I ask this question here because of all the fora I visited xda seems the most knowledgeable.
So here is the situation. I was running Samsung 2.3.4 with launcher pro. But this was all a bit buggy and didn't feel right. So I was really glad to see the 2.3.5 update. I was still thinking this would contain gtalk video chat and ad hoc connection detection. But I was mistaken.
First I thought maybe install the most recent stock version. But as far as I can see this is also still 2.3.5 and doesn't include the previous mentioned features (correct me if I am wrong).
Currently I am this far as I probably "need" a custom wrong but the list seems endless and the one seems better than the other. And I feel a bit lost.
I looked at the following so far: Lite'ning; Oxygenrom; Cyanogen and Villainrom.
Lite'ning rom looks nice and fast but this much blue isn't good for the screen and I hear development is halted so probably not.
Villainrom, I can't find really good video's and I can't find that much info. So no for now.
Oxygenrom looks fast but I also not sure yet.
The best candidate seems to be Cyanogen right now.
So what am I looking for. Besides the two mentioned features above (gtalk video, ad hoc) I am not really sure if I am ready to unlock yet (but if it is necessary). Futhermore I am not really a fan of bugs either (duh) and I don't want to miss any features (FM radio for example). Oh and I am bit of a minimalist when it comes to looks. So that is secondary .
Hopefully I didn't bug you all to much and I am really looking forward to your opinions and experiences (good and bad). And I am still open for suggestions.

PS I haven't really found a "which sellers of jigs are safe" thread. Does anybody know or is it an idea to start one?
Wait for II1 firmware .

If you have to ask these questions, Cyanogen isnt for you (experienced users only)
have a look in the android development forums (original & derivative) for a bigger choice, theres plenty out there.

who is?
Sorry what exactly do you mean?
If you have to ask these questions, Cyanogen isnt for you (experienced users only
He means not for users who know little about flashing and roms ,Its the most difficult rom of them all .
You have read the posts but not understood them otherwise you would not be asking your question what rom .
You could go to one of the Rom Kitchens and build your own .
But in your shoes i would read the details on the latest custom roms what they have and whats missing .
Minimal look is stock or MIU .
PS I haven't really found a "which sellers of jigs are safe" thread. Does anybody know or is it an idea to start one?
Safe as in what ??? i dont see reports of unsafe jigs .

I think OP's question is great, there's a lot of info on XDA but I can't find ONE stable/popular/regular thread discussing ROM vs ROM. The which ROM is best thread always pop up but then die after a couple of posts.
I think it would be great if users posted when they switch ROM commenting the switch, and if other users who tried more than 1 ROM posted their experience.
I'm a long time XDA user (Nexus One->Captivate->Nexus S->SGSII), have run a bunch of ROMs and read XDA EVERYDAY (multiple times lol) and read every post in LeoROM, Cognition, JKay and Siyah Threads but still I have the same question as the OP (was about to make a thread about it).
On my SGSII I've only run Cognition (since v1.0 to latest 1.5.1, gone through 2.3.3 and 2.3.4), also gone through all modems till latest KI4 and kernels (ninph, speedmod) till latest Siyah 1.8.
I've been thinking about switching ROM for some weeks now (want 2.3.5!) but couldn't decide, was about to convert to Leomar's ROM but then encountered other ROMs that look good and have a bunch of followers: Cristelko, DlevROM, TouchX Power, and now even more options!: Cyanogen stable out now and Cognition 2.3.5 announced coming soon. I hate being undecided!!! Was really decided on LeoROM, just about to switch, but now found all these other seemingly very good ROMs!
I'm a flash addict, love updating ROM, Modem & Kernel, but I HATE wiping! And I don't like to switch ROMs or update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 without wiping. So I want to decide what to flash!!! I'm not going to try all of them (I don't have the time and I hate wiping) so I have to rely on other's opinions, reading a lot (following the changelogs) and then make a definite decision!
So please guys, anybody who has tried more than 1 ROM, can you share your experiences?
To check out the most popuar roms, look at how big the discussion thread is (reply, views).
Also a suggestion can be the one to check "veterans" signature, usually this ppl use the most stable/bugless firmware.
For my personal choice im on Cyanogen but yes, thats not for beginners.
My 2nd choice is the "nandroidbackup" of my Black S2 (check my signature) a lot easier to install and beginners ready
Also Miui is a good choice (and dosnt look like the stock tw rom) but got BT/TV Out bug for now, so if you need a stable bt it's not the choice.
To end my 5 cents, i think it's better for you, try out 3-4 roms and pick the one you feel better with.
I think the choice is pretty individual, some ppl loves a rom that some other really hate and so.
Its very simple their is no best rom its users choice . Your preferred rom may be a themed rom i hate themes .

I don't recommend you flashing CM7 since it's harder than flashing samsung firmware based ROMS. Unless you really want it and then well, it's not that hard anyway.
Anyway, if you have root installing gtalk with video is easy, you just need a root explorer app, I use FIle Expert becasue it's free. Just follow this guide step by step and you're done http://samsunggalaxys2blog.com/sams...1-3-with-video-calling-for-samsung-galaxy-s2/
If you want a custom ROM, maybe you could try checkROM www.checkrom.com since it has good support for themes and stuff. And it is updating and will update with each relevant firmware release. And flashing it is just simple. Well hope it helps.
For last, if you really want to go with CM7, I can say that it's the best ROM I've flashed. I just started with it a couple of days ago and you can feel the smoothness inmediatly which I never had in samsung firmware. Anyway there are some bugs, you loose samsung apps like polaris office which I used a lot, FM radio I think doesn't work for now, and the camera app is worse than the samsung one that comes with the phone. But for me at least it's worth it, the main funcionality is there, bluetooth, wifi, etc.... Well, if you decide to flash it please don't use ROM manager becasue it won't work. I can help you with the steps i did if you want, so pm me if you need it because I probably won't be looking at this thread again.
Good luck!
I have used CM6 for Sony Xperia X10i. But really what I want is something that is lightweight and good battery life. I usually always install Nemus Launcher and a horde of my fav. apps. I am not concern about the themes as I never use the default themes. What I want is the built in SIP for GB over 3G. Can someone recommend a ROM for me to use? I have already rooted my phone.
I'd suggest VillainRom. Its stock, fast, and has the best battery of all KI3 roms in my opinion. It all really depends on what kind of rom what you want!

Just trying out the X-Power ROM ... so far so good...
Thanks spradling for backing up my thread. I must admit I was a bit scared of by the previous replies. Nevertheless been ploughing through more threads and finally gave up on finding an answer. I guess everybody tries at one point and hopes they don't have to start a %*(^& I think I bricked my phone thread.
So which one to try. Well the heck with it cyanogen has the best looking website if they build there rom the same way what could go wrong.
Well a lot let me tell ya. It was a very feverish night and I had to flash my phone for like 20 times before I got it right (see this thread).
Nevertheless it works and it works great. I can seed there are some bugs. For example I had a slow response when waking up the phone but after going back and forth between the minimum cpu (200 to 500 MHz) that was gone.
Gtalk + video works (yay!) but still no ad hoc connection. I did some customization and my phone looks and feels slick now. I haven't tried the fm radio but it probably will not work. And I am missing the touch to focus in the camera app but that can be replaced (stil looking any suggestions).
The only thing that really worries me is the battery life. It shortened drastically but it could be me mishandling the battery.
Nevertheless I a pretty pleased with myself and my phone.
Hopefully this helps somebody

There's an lgCamera app in the market which I found better than the one that comes in CM7, you could try it and see if it works best for you. As for battery life, it seems to be better in the latest nightlies (the latest beeing 87). IF you're in stable version I HIGHLY suggest you to move to the latest nightly since there are lots of thing fixed that in "stable" version are not working right.
Thanks for the advice tomascunill. I tried the camera app and although it has the touch to focus feature I am not really blown away by it. Probably because of the lack of image stabilisation. But I'll find something that suits.
Futhermore I updated to the latest nightly. I wonder what issues are resolved. Does anybody know where to find the change logs? And I was wondering about another thing I installed the stable version because I expected it to be, well..., stable. But a better question might be how unstable are nightly's?
Must say I still like my phone but now the galaxy nexus (I liked nexus prime better) is out I feel like I jumped the gun. Well lets wait and see what cyanogen will do with ICS or what ICS stock looks like.
The best ROM is the one you choose. U need to test many rom to have your own opinion.
My favorite is LeoMar 2.7.1
I prefer stock ROM i mean without too much modifications.
LeoMar is a "stock" ROM that you can easily personnalised.
I use :
SpeedMod [Kernel]
Fly in [Animation]
And some mods.
This rom provides me the best battery life.
you could always flash a odex 2.3.5 ROM - would be mostly stock, have all the sammy apps/widgets etc etc. flash a kernel like siyah2.0 or latest speedmod - you can tweak a little bit, not stray too far from stock, and get better battery life with a custom kernel.
Everyone else here is right - CM7 is nothing like touchwiz and would be a big "leap" away from sammy/TW style interface
- x-power with siyah2.0 is a good combo!

Don't get me wrong but I want to get as far away from touchwiz as possible. I probably have the term stock confused. I always thought it meant just android.
Best ROM threads are subjective.....
Best thing to do is take your time to read ROM threads and make a backup of ROM using then flash away find what ROM/Radio suits you best.
On that note thread closed.

[Q] AOKP Build 29 Question

Unfortunately, I do not have enough posts to put this in the AOKP dev forum.
I like the functionality and stability of the ROM, but I noticed that it seems to use up the battery much more quickly than stock based ROMs like Virtuous.
Is anyone else seeing this?

Yes, I have noticed it but I don't mind loosing a bit of battery life for the extra functionality and smoothness. This rom has evolved so quickly over the last few weeks that I am sure that these issues will be dealt with quickly. This is the only non-stock rom that is ready to be used as a daily driver. The Prime community needs this and I am happy to support it.

[Q] ICS roms to consider for Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100

Just rooted my SGS2 with this forums help after got fed up with Samsungs decision to delay even further ICS release for sim free owners. Flashed Pure 7.2 rom and am kinda happy with it. But would like to give a try other roms too. Pure seems to be so much better battery wise then stock. Google experience and most important no bloatware.
Am looking for a smooth and battery friendly rom. Am looking forward for a stable CyanogenMod 9 release but till now exploring the option.
Many thanks in advance ...
There si no such thing as the best rom. The best rom is the one that you prefer, take a look around the SII page and try a few. When you have gone through a few choose which you like and stick with that one
If you want a solid rom then go for checkrom which is gb and based on tw but there is no fully stable ics rom...wait for cm9 to get stable.

actually there are a few roms that are quite stable... omega, litening as well as wanam are the ones i ve used so far.... although there is still a lot of improvement for these roms, if you wanna check out ics I think they are good enough to give them a try...

Thank you everyone who took their time to post here for me and maybe other interested. Firstly I do really understand that there is no such thing as best. And I really never meant to ask for a best rom. I just wanted advise on what would be at least worth to start to try. Which ones are better out there. I just started rooting as really got fed up with Samsungs delays and some really unnecessary for my liking apps included (like bbc iplayer etc)... There are so many roms that I would not really want trying all. Therefore seeking for advise for some better roms out there. And not in their experimental or so stage.
Thanks @frankimm but as you mentioned its not fully stable yet I will skip it on this occasion.
Thanks @pokkas88 I was actually considering lite'ning rom myself. Will check on omega.
My first flash was and is Pure ICS v7.2. It is nice and stable. yesterday with my regular usage got more then 24 out my regular usage. Where on stock 2.3.4 would last only half a day... But something is not right with contacts there. Was lagging when trying to organised and join contacts (google, facebook, skype...) and phone app seems laging a bit too. therefore a bit annoying. otherwise solid and stable rom....
Still hope to hear more opinions...
forgot
forgot to mentioned. Roms with better support from other developers would be probably priority. What I mean the roms that get dedicated addons as I undestadand addons are compatible only with certain roms. And would not really want to get creative in trying to force addons whilst am still learning here...
I highly recommend Hydrog3n rom - I've upgraded to this from Check ROM, prior to finding this I tried several other ICS AOKP to find stability issues, I have to say this is a fantastic rom and cannot recommend you try it enough.
Failing this, Check ROM was great; I had issues with it rebooting or not reconnecting to my mobile network if I lost signal, and ultimately I wanted to do away with Stock so I went for an AOKP rom.
Omega is my fav especially black blue theme

My hones opinion and just in the process of deleting ICS rom number twelve . Non are up to scratch and ICS is not as good as 2.3.6 .

I recommend "Resurrection ics remix" by westcrip. it is really stable. And soon he will publish 4.0.4 AOKP. just give him a try
Just try them all until you like one, there is no other way

Will the I777 ever see the light of Lollipop?

I realize this is the age-old question everytime a new milestone comes out, but I'm eating lunch and it's kind of quiet around here.
Quiet indeed.
If Lollipop makes it to the i9100, then I will do my best to make sure that it makes it to the i777.
The i9100 has a MASSIVE following, but a lot of the devs have moved on to newer devices that are better supported by the manufacturers.
Either way, my fingers are crossed, and hopefully we'll have some code-savvy help if I get stuck. (I'm looking at you @rogersb11 and @TheGeekyNimrod )

If it gets Lollipop I'll be shocked as it didn't get kitkat officially. In fact, it didn't even get a jelly bean 4.2.x update from at&t. Now if you mean custom lollipop roms, then I am sure the sgh-i777 will get at least a few.

I'm still hanging around lol. I know CyanideMod isn't updated super frequently but I wanted to try and bring this old dog something that had, well basically everything lol. So many additions that I've really even shocked myself. From shifted cm where I stated the changes I deleted my branches and started over for CyanideMod. I plan to as I mentioned bring at least one Lollipop build to the i777 and of course will give @cyril279 and @TheGeekyNimrod any useful advice that I can in aiding them bring it as well. I'm quite content with CyanideMod at this point so probably won't myself be focused on Lollipop for awhile as I just dumped at least 2 straight months into it LOL. BUT to answer the OP it will indeed see the i777

The biggest thing I think we will face is updates needed for the device trees. I'm sure there will be a few other snags along the way, but the device tree is a must in order for anything to work. I know CM, Carbon, Slim, Omni, and all the rest will eventually update to Lollipop, and when they do, I plan on updating my builds as well. There's not a lot of us maintaining anything for this device, but I think the general consensus is that we will stick around and try to keep this never dying device on par with the rest of em.
i just want to put out a thanks to you guys for keeping it alive. it was a pleasant surprise to end up back on my gs2 and see that there are still great roms to run my 360 on. it was also a great reminder as to why i don't really need the latest and greatest phone to enjoy owning one.

Hopefully you have all seen it by now, but through alpha builds and the genius work of @rogersb11 there are Lollipop builds in the development section now.
