Hi, new to alot of this android business and wondering if people can help me out, I tend to customise my phones to the max and I was wondering the best ways to do this on a rooted xperia z3. Also wondered about custom roms and how to install them or more so the best ones out there (and what difference is there to a stock) I've heard about deodex (if that's right?) as well but need a beginners guide lol! Anything and everything would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,
I am getting my brand new factory unlocked white GSII tomorrow in the mail! I am incredibly excited, and also slightly confused. If the GSII is such a great phone, why root it? Also, if you rooted it, how do you even begin to decide what mod to use for it or what kernel?
How did you decide what mod and kernel you wanted?
Thanks!
J
The GS2 is a great phone. You don't need to root it you it satisfies your needs right-out-of-the-box, which it likely will.
Don't get the idea that everybody roots their phone just from what you see here at XDA. This is a geek community, afterall. We're the minority.
That said, everybody has their own reasons for rooting. I personally, just wanted to mute the camera sounds and use MarketEnabler.
People also root to use custom ROMs (as I do). Are custom ROMs better than stock? Perhaps. Do you absolutely need a custom ROM if you find the stock ROM just fine? Probably not.
As for choosing mods, kernals, ROMs, etc...no one can answer that for you. You'll need to pick and choose based on your needs...
I think every phone is worth rooting so you can delete those stupid apps that run in the background, delete those apps that your carrier might have put on there.
Oh and double your battery life. Not to mention cool themes. The guys making these roms tweak the **** out of the Samsung stuff to make it even better.
Plus you get that feeling of superiority when you use it-ok maybe not but whatever.
If you don't need root then don't do it. Don't bother try fix what isn't broken.
How do you decide which rom to choose from when there are so many out there? All of the descriptions seem the same to me (more battery, faster, fewer apps from carriers etc...). Is there really any difference?
Only way to find out is by trying them
Each to their own.
I like hyperdroid by the way.
If you need to ask this question, you will not need root or flash a rom. You should read a lot about the benefits and disadvantages of rooting and flashing. But at this point, you are not ready to begin messing with your phone. See this as an advice to save you lot's of trouble.

Try the simple roms with less bull**** first .
Selection should be what is taken off this rom that i require and can i put it back followed by do i want what's been added and then do i like the theme .
Ignore the faster smoother better battery life bits .

above customized is what i use until ICS

Rooting isn't the same as flashing a custom ROM or kernel. I use the stock Samsung firmware on my SGS2 but have it rooted. This allowed me to run certain apps that require elevated access rights, such as Titanium Backup.
If you don't need to root it, don't do it.
Hey guys and girls, really sorry if this is obviouls, or been asked (I have looked through the stickies), but I wanted to be 100% sure.
- I'm not a custom ROM novice, and own a Samsung SG2 with custom ICS ROM. My friend has a Sony Experia Ray (in the UK), and wants me to (in his words) pimp it up a bit.. hehe..
So my question is which custom roms (preferably ICS if they are working well) are 100% compatible with this phone? I don't want to spend loads of time on it, but instead just find a nice, reliable, smooth and fast rom, with all the bloatware removed etc so he can have a nice fast phone.
Any help would be appreciated (I'm not expecting someone to tell me which roms are better.. cause I know that's not something anybody can say, but instead which ones I should be looking at as possibility for this phone.)
Many thanks, J
Hey guys,
I will be getting an android 4.0 phone from china here in a couple days. It doesnt support updates, or anything and I'd like to get Jelly Bean on it. I also have a Captivate I'd like to start developing roms for. I need the simplest explanation of how to make custom roms from aosp for either phone, or if there is another way, or if someone would like to take on the job that'd be great as well. any and all help is greatly appreciated.

(That's the simplest thing you can do)
If the phone from China is really that unique the chance of you going from knowing nothing about developing to making a working JB ROM (which would require writing drivers) is next to zilch. But if you really want to learn and are willing to put in the effort there is an endless supply all over the internet (and within the hundreds of other threads like this).
My question is plain and simple. I mean, I do know the benefits of rooting like backing up apps, removing bloatware, over/underclocking and so on. But in my own experience rooting the device and putting a custom rom in it automatically made the device less stable and more battery hungry (for some weird reason) plus added many many bugs which made me question why did I do it in the first place. So I'm asking do you feel any improvement whatsoever while using any custom rom? Or do you use custom rom just because you can?
It has thousans of reasons.. For simple example while every unrooted users rumor "when will come jely bean? I'm tired of waiting!!" Etc.. i run 4.1.1 jely bean on my SGS3 for 3 months.. its enough.
If you like always research for better and better mobile experience, you have to root your phone. Or simply just say yes for your brand's supply.

since everbody is aware that customization can happen better with a custom rom over and above the stock one.
and regarding improvement, well it all depends on what sort of customization u need and accordingly the Custom rom and kernel u choose. which do vary from person to person.
and nobody use custom rom because they can but because they need the same to customize the phone accordingly to there need.

From my experience with my HTC Desire on which I tried a lot of different ROMs you can either:
1) Flash a stable ROM, benefit is that most of the time its faster than stock & includes additional features and is 99% stable. In addition ROMs are improved all the time and new features added that you might not get on your stock ROM or only very late
2) Flash a ROM that is currently under development and not stable, e.g. earlier ICS ROMs for the HTC Desire had features missing and were not very stable
In my case I started with stable ROMs as I need my phone as daily driver, after I got more experienced I switched to (2) and tried the not so stable ROMs as I always like to try new things etc. and you will get all those new features and improvements (sometimes on the cost of stability and or speed).
Basically up to you what you want to do.
For my Galaxy S III I will also start with a rooted stock ROM as currently I do not see that much benefits in the custom ROMs yet (please correct me if I am wrong).
The answer is also plain and simple. Rooting is to unlock your phone for more customisation and some extra features.
Why we need more customisation and extra features? Because we get bored easily and because we can.

There is a really good article you can read here.
You just get so much more with root. Without root i would have been stock with stock rom on my htc desire and my xoom. The brilliant roms that are on here have provided me with so much more and given me an amazing experience with android.
Hey there guys and gals.
I am new to the whole rooting thing.
I have the LG G3 LS 990 ZV8.
I rooted it already and i am now looking for a rom to use. I wanted to post this with the roms in that subformum, but have less than ten posts.
So anyway, I had a few questions. I was thinking about using the Carbon 4.4.4, but the GAPPS linked were not there. OP (HP Tesla) mentioned what he uses, so i could find it no problem ut had other questions.
If i am at 5.1 should i rom to 5.1 not backwards? i assume it can be done but i would have to flash back to 4.4.4 myself first. I kinda wanna keep it all as simple as i can.
Also i had looked on another rom, and the GAPPS it linked to looked like it removed most of the features that the rom added.
So i would like some advice from those more experienced than I.
I would like a rom that has customization options (many do, so thats easy), Less bloatware (Again common), Adblocker, which not many i saw had listed in features, whether becasue it is assumed they are included, or not many have it, and additional things like audio tinkering, battery life improvements and the like are bonuses. Stability would be highly appreciated as well.
In sum, i would like input to which rom fits my needs (i looked at many myself, but its kinda like someone gave me a dictionary and told me to pick my favorite word, i just need help from someone with a better vocabulary.) and what the different kernels, GAPPS, and such bring to the table.
If some of you would like to say what you use and why.
Any help is much appreciated,
