[Q] Exynos 7420 development - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive always been an HTC man and watched both live streams to decide my next phone. Im now pretty convinced its going to be the S6 Edge. The one thing thats worrying me is the development side of things with a Samsung own chip. Are they pretty good at supporting developers with documentation and such? I know when HTC went with the Tegra chip in the One X there were lots of problems with S-Off and that sort of thing. Is there likely to be any of that here or is it not a problem?

Exynos is closed source. They are not as open as say Qualcomm. Kernel is GPL so we will have custom stock kernel and ROMs. However... Cm12 and aosp is going to be hard AND buggy.

Custom stock ROM's are better than nothing, especially if you can get that bloatware out of the phone, even with a 128GB option (my GS6 Edge of choice) I still don't want all of the AT&T Bloatware and GB's of wasted space. Hiding is not enough for me.

are we gonna be able to achieve root?
it's all I'm interested in first phase, just want to remove some blootware from sammy, install a real UI and remove ads.
custom rom I can wait little more

Root will probably be the easiest.

The two biggest US Carriers always rain on our parade, sadly they offer the best coverage otherwise I would go with T-Mo just for the open nature of the devices.

Yeah Chainfire will done it on time.

Does that mean there will be problems with aosp Roms?

You will most probably never see a AOSP based ROM for s6 I'm afraid. And if you do, it will be so bug infested that it will take months to make it a daily. Then there is the stability issue when hack building like that...
Just check the note 4 exynos page... One half functioning cm11 (kudos to the developer).
So yeah... Stock ROM, debloated with a custom kernel with kcal or something similar. I'm happy. Maybe even themed to aosp and 360dpi...
Dreams...

That sounds bad . It seems i have to think again then. Maybe if we get Samsung based Roms like echoerom i might be tempted

Root and Knox
Hey guys
One of my colleagues has a Galaxy Alpha and is kinda jealous of me being able to stream to AirPlay-devices etc because my phone is rooted. So I said that I'd help him obtain rood, but soon discovered that the Alpha is not possible to root without trashing Knox.
So... does anybody know if that will also be the case with The S6 Edge? I NEED that phone, but I also NEED root... and I'd like to keep knox...
Also, The GS2 had both overclocking and undervolting options available... do you gus reckon that that will be possible on the S6Edge ?
- Martin

If you NEED root, don't buy it until root is confirmed. No one knows at this point how hard/easy it will be, or how long it will take to achieve.

looks like Chainfire has it already;
at least he posted a link in the original dev forum.

Root already is a good sign!
Would be interesting to know of any developers who are at least interested in getting this phone to work on?

Can you guys still recommend this device?

I'm still using an htc inspire, and I've tried att latest and greatest like the note and one x and they haven't been perfect or lack of Rom support that made me run. I just want to be able to flash cm 7 or 9 roms, any other roms I may wish and this att device dev support seems to be going strong. This device is probably considered older now and with the sgs3 coming soon, well by the time it reaches att who knows. Does this device lag with its older processor??

One word. Yes.
The device is amazing, I highly reccomend.
What answer do you really expect us to give you other than "yes"? Do you really think people in this forum is going to tell you no? Sounds to me like you already made up your mind to get this phone if you didnt like the Note or the OneX.
How about bln support, is that compatible with most roms? Say cm custom builds whether built in or not?

I would absolutely recommend this device. It may be considered last year's technology, but the dual core Exynos is still a great processor. The phone doesn't lag on stock firmware, and on the better custom firmwares, it flies. Rom support is unparalleled for a US based phone, partially because of the commonality between the i777 and the international i9100.
It is true that the S3 is on the horizon, but I would honestly rather have my S2 than that monstrosity.

Sort of. I'm running AOKP right now, which is a purely Google-based rom, and BLN works flawlessly for me(with the right kernel, of course). However, if you run a Samsung based rom, BLN will not natively work for SMS messages. There are workarounds using Tasker profiles, but theyre usually pretty sketchy. Short answer...yes, if you're running the right rom and kernel, BLN is supported.

BLN can be pretty important to some people. I came from a BlackBerry, so it's almost essential to me to be able to see if I have a text from across the room.
Yes, I still like this phone. Hell the original Galaxy S is still going strong development wise and this one should do the same.

I miss the keyboard too. It was the one thing that made me choose a BlackBerry over an iPhone four years ago. I still hate the iPhone keyboard because of the lack of haptic feedback and the complete lack of customization options. Android is better though...with so many options for keyboards and setups, it almost makes up for not having physically keys...but I still miss them occasionally.

Honestly? Out of the box, the OneX works great. Even though the bootloader is currently locked, the phone works just fine the way it is and nothing really needs to be added to it. However, the OneX does have root and so you can install customs roms, just nor kernels or radios. Several tweaks, mods and roms have been created and flashes successfully.
On the flipside, the GSII is completely unlocked and there are several rom/kernel choices. There is some of the best Dev work done on XDA right here in this forum, so if your really interested in Dev support and choices, this is the phone to get.
Both phones are great. You just have to look at hardware specs, Dev support and see which road you want to take.
A yes from me as well.
For future, up-coming device such sgs3, if it will be released next week or two, then it might worth waiting but in this case, just a rumor, no officially released date yet, it could be months from now and even if released, what happen if it gets locked bootloader? It's not worth waiting if you're ROM-flashaholics.

Oh geez, I'm so behind, honestly I don't have time looking elsewhere but the i777 , thanks m8
I picked up the SGSII a month ago and absolutely love it. A huge upgrade from the previous generation (captivate).
I suspect that, much like desktop computers, going from one to two cores is significant, but you get diminishing returns after that.
Only downside is if you want true 4G. I spend so much time with wifi that I don't care.

I'm definitely taking the dev support road. Thanks.
One of my last concerns is battery life. More of it having to do with charging time. I think I remember with the stock Rom charging times were slow from a wall charger if I remember reading this. Have charging times improved with custom roms/kernels?
I think Samsung devices in general have a bad rep with charging times?
I haven't seen any issues with charge times, but my expectations may be low. I have not timed it, but I would estimate under 3 hours to charge from less than 20% to full.

What more can be done to this phone? Feels it's all dependent on latest Google, TouchWiz, and CyanogenMod firmwares. The processor is still running today's tasks fine still.

I'm running Stang's v2 rom on OF1. I thought this will be the closest I will ever get my S4 to running a streamlined ROM and I have to say, it's NEVER run better. Handles everything very nicely. I still find TWZ rather annoying though...so many baked-in 'features' that I've never used and don't care about.

@stang5litre has done an excellent job on that as well.
I'm too poor to go anywhere... also because the one phone I want is like 100 bucks... plus taxes and crap, which we sure as heck don't have the money for because yay water damage!
we did hijack mohammed's thread...haven't tried the new Safestrap yet. Does it work good?
So is there anything to this mention of a unlocked bootloader for the s4?
Yes, for MDK bootloader.

I wonder if its possible to re-map memory to flash
really there isn't much public info on the state of kexec and what has/has not been tried or done
last I heard got the kernel to initialize but it was hanging at boot ... after that everybody sorta dropped
if you could map some of the memory to a flash partition you could walk it as it boots and get a better idea on whats going on
I'm still on this phone because it has the features I want with an unlocked BL. If the Nexus 6 had a removable SD card, battery, IR, and some of the Samsung features like side sync and multiwindow, I'd use it instead.
Also if the S5, or Note 3 BL proof of concept unlock ever gets released, I'd get either one.
One thing I'm currently looking at is removing all the google bits that are not part of the AOSP, and basically making the Phoenix ROM like a S4 would be if it only had Samsung's software on it.
I like the direction stang, and klabit are going to add as many features as possible from the newer Samsung phones to the S4.
UPSM is a boon to the day to day use of this phone, as is fast charge and the new kernel.
The only thing I could really wish for is that all the new features could be optional and selectable at install like some of them are in the Phoenix port.
I believe that the Chinese variants are this way because of the ban on google services in China.
I don't want to remove the google services for the reason China does. Just for battery life reasons, and the constant addition of features I don't want, or need.
I am slowing transitioning over to using mostly apps from the f-droid repository and side loading the few app only on the play store, backed up from another phone.
As far as telegram is concerned, it's not 100% secure in it's default configuration, if that is your main use of it.
I use another software that is currently still in beta called ring. It is cross platform as well as open source.
I'm also working on designing a 3d printed case for using an extended battery, Qi charging that is rugged and has a removable front S-view cover option.
When I get more 3d modeling of it done I'll put a link in my sig.
Edit: Wrong area, my bad.

Just curious...

I know the Snapdragon variant has a locked bootloader; but, what are the chances of unlocking it at all by the talented devs in the community? Or, will this device end up dead and forgotten just like the S7 I upgraded from?

Unlocked, prolly not. Samsung is serious about security.
Root? Yeah, I am sure it can be done. There are some recent exploits in 8.0 and 8.1 that were not patched until the March security patch. We don't have that security patch yet so this is a chance there.

A good, clean root? One that doesn't bring the device to a crawl and needs a ton of workarounds like the S7? Probably sounds like I'm being unappreciative of the work done with such exploits, but I assure you I'm not. I've had plenty of devices with great communities in the past, but I just feel that root is pointless if it isn't 100% stable.
Maybe I'll just start setting aside some cash for the next Google Pixel; or whatever they call it if they don't change the name again.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Nova Launcher and have been using it for several years now; however, it doesn't affect the entire system. I have to use Samsung's themes to take care of settings and the built-in stock apps. I'd much rather have just one method of theming that handles everything; hence my desire to use custom roms.
As far as Viper goes, I can understand why it wouldn't be for everyone, but the built-in Dolby Atmos option sounds like garbage to me no matter what source I'm playing audio through. This is one reason why I miss my Galaxy Tab S 8.4".

That has to be for the Exynos variant as they're talking about installing TWRP. Snapdragon variant can't install a custom recovery without an unlocked bootloader; which is unlikely for us. However, I think there has been some progress toward a root method (don't quote me on that), but no actual root yet.

That it does! I didn't see the 5 at the end of 965U.
Perhaps it's due to a lack of sleep, but I seem to be missing something with these model numbers. 965U shows to be the Snapdragon variant, but all other sources say there's no root method. I'm just going to stop worrying about it all at this point and quietly wait in the corner while the experts take care of business. Lol

Not sure....But hoping that is the reason/reasons and that there will be more in the future.
Guys, do you know if we a have sm-T865 flashable ROM(TWRP zip) ? I have a different variant model(SM-T867) which has 4g enabled but no phone calls. I will try to enable it by SM-T865 rom.
I would gladly pitch in on a flashable zip for tab S6 Wi-Fi custom ROM

When will we see custom development?

Hey guys,
since I don't know how well or quickly the Xiaomi community is working, I was wondering when you think we will see the first custom ROMs and Kernels.
Especially an OC Kernel, I could imagine, would improve the experience on this phone alot.
Thanks!
It will take long time cause of accessibility problems. Very long.
Probably never.
Ah surely
Without jokes, there Will be custom developement in mid future?
No. Not before mid 2020
I think currently it's overpriced for sd730g, may be worth for that camera!
If they price it lower than k20 pro ... Hit!

I'm super happy with mine and don't think it's overpriced.
Okay I can confirm that there won't be any custom rom anytime soon.
Anyway, stock one is very good already!

Thank you for providing that info. If I can ask you, where did you had that info from? And why there will be not custom rom's soon?

Stock isn't bad, but a custom would still be better. Plus a custom kernel. That shouldn't be too hard since we have kernel sources released?

Interesting really this info is. The heck why, wouldn't there be a custom ROM soon any?
Me and my little green big-ear fella thought it would be nice to have such a camera in such a sexy body. But without aftermarket support... We don't know... So any update on the matter?

You can install any keyboard. I love GBoard, but you can use SwiftKey or whatever you want.
Just search for "Keyboard" in Play Store. If you want something very "raw", look for keyboards in F-Droid.
I spoke with some of the developers of custom roms and no one is interested in developing for this phone.
It really seems like there won't be any custom rom/kernel anytime soon and probably, maybe, never.
We will ahvr to stick to the stock rom.
Anyone interested in starting a reward campaign here?
First fully functioning custom rom gets the cash bounty
I'm putting in $10
Is that a feature? I would defo be willing to throw in some money!

Thanks for your information sir, could i ask why they are not interested in developing for this phone? Personally i think is a pretty interesting hardware
As MoneyFist, I also would donate for a good featured custom ROM ?
I don't understand why there are people saying we will not get custom roms. I think, the main reason for now, is that we have no sources, or I least I can't find them. Once we have sources, devs will be able for, at least, compile something
Sources have been released a while ago. I think once the phone will be widely available in India, we will see devs creating stuff...hopefully.
