[Completed] [Q] How to link obb files to external sd card? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys
I have an Acer Iconia Tab 8 A1-840 and I have a few games. The problem is that I don't have enough space in the internal memory for all my games. I want to link the obb files to my sd but every app I've tried gives me an error.
- Directory Bind does not move the files.
- Link2SD gives me "Link2SD package invalid".
- And Foldermount gives me "Unknown Error".
So I don't know what can I do to link my games to the SD. I think that the problem is caused because of my x86 CPU, a Quad-Core Intel Atom, or could it be my sd card? My system version is stock KitKat 4.4.4.
Sent from my A1-840 using XDA Free mobile app.

The issue is that the way android works the sd card is not made to run apps off of. Mainly as Google removed the native android code for sd cards. So app developers don't make apps that work that way

Are you able to move app from phone memory to SD Card ?

I can't move apps to my SD card natively, my tablet uses the internal storage for every app related files. I had another tablet before (the HP Slate 7) that didn't let me move apps to sd natively but I could move the obb an data files using Directory Bind, but it had an ARM A9 CPU and JellyBean 4.1.1, also it's internal memory path was /storage/sdcard while in my actual tablet it is /storage/emulated/0.

Okay, so root your device can help with your problem.

You can link your obb's to your usb drive, for that you need a cheap usb-otg cable and a usb drive (4gb) or you can just get a usbotg (portable)
1. Connect that to your device and copy the Android folder which has the obb to the root of the usb drive
2. Then download XInternalSD from here http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.pyler.xinternalsd
3. Activate it in Xposed and reboot.
4. After that open XinternalSD and select the path to your usb drive, in my case it is /mnt/usbotg. You can find this in Es File Explorer easily.
5. Enable the games in XInternalSD that you wanna run, don't enable all apps, just enable the games that you wanna run, in my case - GTA San Andreas, FIFA 15, Asphalt 8 and NFS MOST WANTED.
6. Reboot and start the game.
I call this MHD (Mobile Hard Disk)
Press thanks if I helped.

I already have an otg cable an and a pendrive I could use, but I would really prefer to use my SD Card. I found an app called Obb to SD which needs xposed but I don't have it installed. I don't want to install xposed framework yet since I haven't found a way to unbrick my tablet in case that it gives me a brick and I think it might cause a brick because of my x86 CPU. Thanks for your help anyway .

I no longer have the "Link2SD package invalid" problem . At first I thought it was because of my CPU, but it was because the patch wasn't working well (I wanted to try Link2SD plus before buying it). Thanks to all of you guys for helping me ! Now I can finally play my games.

you can use gl to sd but you need root

[Tutorial] How to move Gameloft SD Data Cache to External

Gameloft has lot of great Android games. However, most of them are not small in size. Samsung Galaxy S II has only 11.50 GB internal USB storage. Gameloft will store all the games data in /sdcard/gameloft/games which is located in internal USB storage.
Asphalt 6 Adrenaline HD itself needs to store 900 MB data files there. Not to mention if you have lot of Gameloft games like BackStab HD, 9MM HD, Dungeon Hunter 2, Order & Chaos and etc…
Gameloft Patcher does not work on every Gameloft games. But no worry, here is a free solution to hack and move Gameloft games data to external SD card.
All Gameloft games are supported.
Note – Root access is required.
Requirements:
-A rooted phone
- Script Manager
- A script
How to:
1- Move your Gameloft folder to external sd. (/sdcard/external_sd/)
2- Create an empty folder named gameloft on your sdcard.
3- Install Script Manager from Android Market here
4-Download the SD-Hack.sh Script on the attachments and save it to /sdcard
5-Launch Script Manager.
6-Go to /mnt/sdcard and select SD-Hack.sh.
7- Check Run as root and Run at boot. (like the picture)
8-Click Save and then Exit.
9-Reboot your phone.
That’s all, maybe you'll need to download the SD data again for some games but it'll be saved on your external sd.
Used to do this on my old HTC DHD. Obviously SGS2 had much more internal memory, so never bothered. Good one.

Non Gameloft games to SD
Just about to route my S3.... Just want to know if you can move the game data for other non gameloft games to my SD card using this method????
Cheers
Paul
if you have a rooted phone...
why not just make a symlink???
---
nevermind .. /mnt/sdcard is VFAT, that doesn't support symlinks
.. is there some kind of "fstab" to make changes permanent and do not install additional software??
i realised when y connect my phone (sg sclcd i9003l gingerbread rooted) from usb
it UNMOUNTS /mnt/sdcard (internal storage) and /mnt/sdcard/external_sd (external sd card)
and REMOUNTS by usb on my pc .. when i stop usb drives on my pc and stops usb storage on my phone
seems it REMOUNTS /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/sdcard/external_sd as were before
may be possible to find and edit the script that *remounts* these devices??
thank you
Thx a lot

Game data on CIFS share!!??
OK.
This looks promising. I just created a CIFS share and automount it on boot via mount manager. I mounted my laptop's hard disk partitions and that of the USB external HDD connected to my laptop. I have a partition of 50 GB aprox that is blank. I am hoping that I can use this to store app data using this method. I modified your script like this
!/system/bin/sh
sleep 60
mount --bind /sdcard/pc/H/Android/obb/com.madfingergames.deadzone/ /sdcard/Android/obb/com.madfingergames.deadzone
here pc/H is the cifs mount
Just testing this with one game for now (shadowgun deadzone)
Will test and let you know how I fare!
Thanks a lot for the knowledge!

Don't have any Gameloft games, but I DO use ePSXe and have several PS1 game Isos stored on my phone (650Mb a pop)
Will this method work for me?

Couple of queries from Sony Tab S newbie

Hello Friends,
I have purchased my first tab, Sony Tab S after using android based HTC Wildfire
I have done some homework by checking the tablet section, but still have some questions in my mind ..sorry if i am asking again n again!
1. When i connect the tab to pc, it recongnize the sdcard 1 on usb.. but my problem is that just 300 mb is left even i have 32gb sd card. I have Maxpayne, GTA, brother in arm, Angry birds space on my tab. All music on sdcard. Can i some how i get some more space or its just the end that i can not add more games to the tab ?
2. I have heard about Link2SD, can i use it on unrooted ICS sony tab? If yes please guide me
3. To use sdcard2 on usb, there is a utility in S.ony AiO shared here, but question is same .. can i use it on unrooted tab?
If above problems are solved, i think its the best tab for me. Sorry if its irritating reading these questions but please friends resolve my problems.
Many thanks friends

1. To reduce to amount of Internal Storage memory being used, move your apps to USB Storage memory, aka sdcard, which is also internal memory. To move your apps, go into Settings, select Apps, select the app (from Downloaded or All tab) you want to move to USB Storage (internal memory), then touch the button labeled Move to USB storage. You will have to do this for each app you want to move. Also, move all of your music and video files from the tablet's internal memory to your SD card by using the tablet's File Transfer app.
2. Link2SD requires root permission.
3. Without root permission, Condi's AiO tool cannot give you the ability to directly access sdcard2 from your computer. You will have to first move your files from your computer to sdcard using MTP (USB computer connection), then use the tablet's File Transfer app to move the files from sdcard to sdcard2. A bit of a hassle, eh? It would be faster and easier to just install your SD card in your computer, move your files to the SD card, then install the SD card in your tablet.

[Q] Moving app Data to External SD card

Hi Guys,
I have karbonn A15 android ICS(4.0.4) smartphone, its not rooted.
I want to move the app Data to my external sd card, i tried to move the data folder from the internal SD (android/data) to External SD (root folder), just to check whether it releases any memory in the storage section in phone settings. but the internal storage was same, there was no change, can anyone tell me where does the app data resides in the internal memory, its fine if i can move app data manually to the external sd card.
I also want some clarification on below questions:
1. Also i want to know whether there is any risk rooting phone like (Bricking Phone), as i have bricked my previous Galaxy Ace when i rooted and used ROM manager.
2. Also i have heard about Folder Binding app which automatically transfers App Data to External Sd Card, is there any risk of bricking phone.
3. Whats the easiest method to root Karbonn A15 phone, i am not that tech savvy, so easiest method would be grateful in rooting device.
My concern is just to move App Data to External Sd Card, because i have some app whose Data increase very frequently (E.g: FireFox app).
Answers to this would be really appreciated.

here are the steps
the driver files are included on the phone internal card called pcdrivers.zip. you can connect the usb mount the internal usb storage and copy the file to your pc. if you face any problems you can download the file from here
1. Enable USB Debugging -> Under SETTINGS -> DEVELOPER OPTIONS
2. Install the drivers for the phone.
3. download "Android Root Unlock" from sourceforge.net and extract it to your Disktop
4. navigate to the above folder and run the batch file ICS_Root_Unlocker.bat
the batch file will reboot your phone a couple of times and will wait with a message "Press Any Key to continue"
IMPORTANT NOTE : if you PC is saying "PRESS ANY KEY" note if your phone is on or rebooting....
if it is Rebooting, wait for it to start before pressing a key
5. After a couple of boots the phone will be rooted
6. verify that the Root is complete by observing a "Superuser" shortcut in the application list
Moving Apps:
Once rooted, download Folder Mount From the Play Store
- Once installed, open FolderMount and grant superuser access when asked.
- In FolderMount, you have the options to:
- Name your folder (IE: "Generic Game 1")
- Select the "Source" Folder (the one on your local storage)
- Select the "Destination" Folder (the one on your SD Card)
When you enter these details, it will then move them to your SD Card!
I highly recomend FolderMount Pro, because it also shows you filesizes when browsing.
Common Locations of Large Files:
Two common locations for games (IE: Gameloft games, EA Games, etc.)
Android/data
Android/obb
I know it's not the easiest process ever, but hopefully I've explained it enough to get people started.

Is there any method/app that can provide a similar functionality without rooting the phone? I tried rooting my Karbonn A21 without success and do not really want to brick it?
Also is there any way of backing up the phone and app data before rooting? Will the existing apps and data be wiped out by rooting?
Thanks in advance.

You can use App2SD but you have to check if your device is compatible or not.
you can use Kies to backup your apps, settings, etc.

foldermount
so quick question, i transferred games to external sd, worked fine and all, but after a while my games asked me to download the files again, anyone know a solution?
I m using foldermount but there is write error mention that was unable to write into the external sdcard caused by a permission issue where normal apps are not able to write anything into storage/ext_sd. What should I do next to solve this problem? Attempt to recover using the apps not solving it.
This is what i mean.
Moving app Data to External SD card
in particular the movement of android apps data from internal memory to SD card is a simple process, but the problem with these issues is your smartphone is to be a latest version like 4.3 version.
Idea
Can I move the game folders from Internal Storage: Android/data -> SD card: Android/data, will it work on non rooted phone? In the Data folder on the SD card are partition of some apps and they work just fine. Same with folder "obb".
moving apps data and obb to External sdcard.
I recommend using an app called folder mount. ..it needs root but it's as easy as fishing in a barrel. .. I am using It and it works fine... and now you have a clear space in your internal storage.
Hey, I followed above instructions and my phone Samsung S5 6.0.1 successfully rooted, but now I've entered into an endless restarting loop.
Please help what's the problem might be?

Answer to your 1st question :
Its not upon Play store that where your app gets installed.
Its upon the App Developer.
In Android Manigest File of the app there's a line that tells Android where the app should get installed.
There 3 three different options namely :
Auto - This means that it can be installed on both internal and external sd card but at the time of installation it gets installed on internal memory and can be manually moved to external as in your case.
Prefer External - Same as auto but directly gets installed to external sd card if present.
Internal Only - Can only be installed on Internal Sd card and can't be moved to external.
For your 2nd question I have answered that in another thread.
Read it there.

As per your query, When you download some bigger applications/games such as Asphalt 8 - they get installed on the SD card automatically (if there's SD card inserted in your device).
and for your Second query, try this method :
Step 1 : Download Android SDK (Click HERE)
Step 2 : Install adb drivers on your System (your device should automatically install them when connected through USB)
Step 3 : Install Motorola Device Manager (Download from HERE)
Step 4 : When Downloading Android SDK is completed, Go to Platform-tools (Path : adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030\sdk\platform-tools)
Step 5 : Open Command Prompt in Platform-tools folder (Right Click>Open Command Windows here)
Step 6 : Now Enter the following command to see if the device is set to default for Internal Memory or External Memory :
Type : adb devices (to see if your devices is connected)
adb shell pm get-install-location (to see if default apps/games installation is set ot Internal memory or External memory)
adb shell pm set-install-location 2 (No. 2 indicates that you are going to set default installation to External Memory)
Congratulations !! You have successfully set your Moto E default installation to SD card. Have fun !
I don't think SD card really is useful for apps, because even though there is an option to "Move to SD", only small portion is moved which maybe not at all useful (Remember, Kitkat imposed some changes in SD card write, access etc) The data files are not moved like in Jellybean. As for Asphalt 8, 98% of the app lies in internal storage even though its moved to SD card. So moving, I don't think its very useful for apps.
Anyways I don't own this device, and the above points are said with respect to review videos seen in Youtube.

I guess everything from WhatsApp stays on internal memory itself
when I placed the WhatsApp folder from my old phone on SD card it didn't get recognized from the app...as soon as I moved the folder to internal memory the app picked it and restored my conversations
So bottom line WhatsApp folder can't be moved to external memory, AFAIK[emoji106]

That suxks then..considering the tons of photos and videos that are shared on whatsapp these days no workaround available ?
I guess its basically because Internal memory is recognized as "sdcard0" and SD-card as "sdcard1".
In my old Karbonn phone which runs 4.2.2 ... SDcard is recognized as "sdcard0" and Internal SD card as "sdcard1" .. So everything got installed or copied into the Microsd card this way. So if there's a way to revert those, maybe it solves, though not sure.

Installing very large games

I rooted my phone yesterday and installed foldermount so i can store large games on SD card. It's working fine with apps less than 500mb because i only have 500mb available in SD card. First I have to download the big games into internal, then move them to Sd card using foldermount to free up space in internal memory.
However, i cannot do so with very large games like Asphalt 8 because i don't have 1.5 gb free space in the first place. Please give me some advice.
Download asphalt 8 data, apk from sites like http://onhax.net/asphalt-8-airborne-apk or something else(you can get many sites by searching in google)
then proceed same way you did before..

In my opinion Link2SD is the best app to solve the problem of low internal memory, it works great for me. Take a high speed class SD card and create two partitions (FAT32 and EXT4) using Minitool Partition WIzard or Gparted if you use Linux. And then download and install Link2SD from PlayStore. Run the app and link everything to SDCARD (ext4 partition). I advice you to buy the plus version because it allows to link the internal data too, so more free memory.
About the installation of large games like Asphalt. Well, Link2Sd allows to link the game (or any app) automatically on SdCard once you finished to install it from PlayStore. Just go on the settings and select "auto link".
There's a good video on youtube on how to use the app. Just search: "How to use link2sd to move apps to 2nd partition(SD card)"
Of course other videos are great too, but this is one of the best imho

Thanks for the reply. Thing is, i can't install asphalt 8 from play store in the first place because it needs 1.4 Gb and i only have 500mb free internal memory. I need a way to download it directly to the linked folder in SD card.
I also tried downloading apk and obb, but still I have to first copy the large obb in internal memory, then link it to SD card, which is not possible due to low internal memory.
Install xposed and xinternalSD, he download data/obb automatically to the sd, and use Link2SD to link all applications. I use these methods, and I have 1.37 GB free memory. but I have apps 2,8GB.
I made a video teaching how to configure xinternalsd in kitkat, but is the same configuration in Lollipop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ-SeWG3dVQ
(Sorry my bad english)

Oh you mean in the first moment, now I understand. Sorry, my mistake
Btw you're right, because at this point it's even impossible to download the game from PlayStore. Well, I think the only way is to remove all the bloatwares and apps you don't use. And through Link2SD link all the installed apps you can to SD. Once you have more free space and you reached about 1.5gb try to install the game (and link it to sd). You can also consider to try a custom rom if you are not using it, generally speaking it has more free space than stock rom.

It sounds great, I've never tried the xposed solution. Good to know, I'll consider it if I'll need. Thank you very much, and thanks for the video too

I just recently rooted my device and i am very inexperienced with these stuff. I'm not sure I'm ready to mess with custom recovery and Xposed modules right now, but it sure seems like it's the solution i need. Anyway, I'll try to search for easier alternatives, but if i can't, I'll have to use this one.

Ok, I installed link2sd, partitioned my SD card and sent ALL my downloaded apps to the partition in SD card. I now have 1.3 GB free in my internal, but to download asphalt 8, I need 1.6 GB free.
I know that i can also remove pre-installed apps, but i'm not sure about it. Please tell me if it's safe to move/remove the following apps:
-Hangouts
-Google Play Newsstand
-Google Play movies and TV
-Motorola Assist
-Motorola Alert
-Motorola Migrate
-Google Play Music

Yes you can, I removed all of them.
To uninstall you can also use "system app remover", download it from Play Store

I uninstalled some pre-installed apps, still I didn't have enough space. So, i dug around the internet some more and finally found the solution!
You can actually use foldermount to install large obb files DIRECTLY INTO SD CARD instead of just moving them from internal to SD card. Link2SD only allows us to move from internal to SD, but foldermount did the trick!
However, Link2SD allows me to transfer Apk, Dex, Lib and internal files as well, so I guess I'm keeping them both! Thanks again for recommending Link2Sd for me.
I haven't tested with Asphalt 8 yet, but it works with NFS Most Wanted, wich is over 2GB in size.

You're welcome
Yeah FolderMount is good too. It depends on what we have to do. I'm currently using Link2sd because it works great for me but other solutions (like the one proposed by brundark) are always welcome. By the way I'm glad you solved the issue
For asphalt 8 download the game from pc or on ur friends or family member's phone..who have more inbuilt memory..then transfer the obb & apk to ur sd card..n install apk n place the obb accordingly. will work like charm.
n regarding how to run obb files from sd card..just download "obb to sd " from xposed.. app in KB size.. so u dont have to install folder mouny n do evetything manually..this module does everything on its own.. i play big Gameloft n EA games easily.

Thanks for the help, but I'm sticking with foldermount now, since size isn't my biggest issue. I'm also new to these stuff, so I'll save Xposed for later. I don't really feel like trying everything at once, and theres so many things to try out there!(I haven't even flashed a custom rom yet)
