Since you've manually updated to lollipop... I suppose you already have a recovery mod installed....
1. Download SuperSU
Google it... and download from the selected link in the pic

(After downloading, DO NOT UNZIP)
2. Transfer the zip file to the root of your phone's memory
3. Reboot into recovery by first shutting down your phone and then pressing power button and Volume down button together and navigating to recovery and pressing volume up to select
4. Select "Install Zip from sdcard"
5. Flash the SuperSU zip folder
6. Reboot
You should have root access now

I also updated Moto E manually to LP 5.1. No root. No bootloader unlocked yet. I want to root it and install other custom ROMs. How do I go about it?

Removed.. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello,
Simple way to root and unroot stock kernel without flashing insecure kernel.
Don't worry about custom counter and yellow triangle, with this method they never appear, because we only rooting, it's a rooting script not a custom kernel.
This rooting script included Busybox installer.
Rooting :
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted
Unroot :
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip
- SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard
Choose and Install SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Unrooted
Tested on latest stock Galaxy S II ICS rom.
Tested on latest Galaxy Note by some user (thanks for report)
Note: This method should work for other device with ICS rom, check CWM that compatible for your device.
You can download all the zip files from this thread. ROOT/UNROOT ZIP Files
Thanks,

Ah, so you're the one who doesn't care about the xda-rules and allow this kind of questions here by answering them (although this is way more than what OP asked).

Hi TechTex198,
good job but i think it's better to install directly the Twrp without Kingo and Flashify apk into phone, a best way with Odin.
It's possible to install SuperSU package under Kingo with some shell script but it's more harder especially on KitKat.
So to do:
- Boot into HRESET : Vdwn + Home + Power
- Odin: Load twrp.tar (vivalto3mveml3g) into PDA and set Auto Reboot then Start process
- Boot into RECOVERY : Vup + Home + Power (hold on Samsung logo)
- Install Update from SDCard: UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip (latest)
- Reboot

well, next time if you have a rooted device, and you have a nasty app that wants your device unrooted, install APK Editor open the (edit) that app , and apply the hide_root.zip
P.S.: If now you don't have TWRP recovery and did not make a backup you must flash the firmware again

Unfortunately, I don't have TWRP recovery but i still have access to my recovery menu, can i install it through it ?
if you have the firmware an IMG you can flash it from PC with USB Burning Tool, or if you have a ZIP you can flash it through recovery from a USB/SD card
