AndroBench reboots Nexus9 - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To investigate why my Nexus 9 is so laggy, I enabled "show CPU usage" in developer options, and when it lags, iowait is always high.
So, to check the storage performance, I tried AndroBench.
Surprisingly, each time I run benchmark in AndroBench, Nexus 9 hard reboots (start from the "Google" screen).
I've tried it four times and it always reboots. Sometimes, it even reboots again during the reboot.
Is it only me? Is it possible that there's some problem with the flash in my Nexus 9?

It's probably hitting the thermal throttle.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app

Possible... But usually it's just in the preparing phase or the first sequential read test, if it can heat up this quick, there must be some problems...
Maybe the full disk encryption is related?

No reboot here, LTE, unencrypted.
But according to this benchmarks the storage read and write performance of my N9 is horrible

Could people please post their numbers?

2.5h since last reboot

Read is Bad and write even more

Sometimes I can finish the benchmark without reboot. Mine is not very stable. Here are 3 runs from different time:

I think its good

The end of the story
My Nexus 9 went into a boot loop after upgrading to 5.1.1. It just goes through the "Android is optimizing apps" process, reach the end of it, and goes back to the boot animation. In ADB, you can see that the system services have crashed.
I've sent it back for repair and got it back with 5.0.2. I upgraded to 5.1.1 without issues and performed the storage tests again.
Now the performance numbers look similar to other people. I think that there were some problems with the flash storage.
ps. The repair process is fairly quick, and HTC did not send me any quote. However, I have to pay the shipping fee when I send the device.

Here is my results. This is my second test run as on the first one I got results twice as bad as you can see now on the screenshot. Should I consider swapping the tablet for a new one?

Your numbers look normal. It's close to the one I got after repair. I think that you don't have problem with your storage, so did you get lags and reboots?

Well, so far, 1 random reboot on Chrome Dev. I launched it and it froze, after that rebooted the tablet. Seems to be happening with the latest Chrome Dev update, not sure though.
The only reason why I was concerned in the first place was the fact that bench score was twice as bad when I first ran than the screenshot I posted now.
Do you think it's alright for test score to improve on second run or fluctuate like that? I do use Nexus 9 pretty heavily, got Hearthstone game running there, as well as several other heavy apps including loads of offline movies and videos. Usually have 3-4GB of storage left all the time, could that affect the performance?

Another thing is transfer of files. My tablet is unusable at all if I transfer files to it. Like if I put a huge video (for instance 1GB) and the UI is complete unresponsive like it is frozen until said transfer completes. Does it happen to you as well?

Before I replaced it, the score is always bad. Maybe yours is not as bad as mine?
Interestingly, I also has little space left before I replace it. You can try to free up some space and see if it gets better.

Well if you could test it by transferring a huge file and trying to use the tablet at the same time, that would great. Cause if it doesn't happen to you then I've got something at least to go on.

Well, now I have the replaced one, and I just used ADB to push a large file to the tablet. The tablet works normally, no lags.
I don't have the old one to test with.

Can you check it if your tablet freezes when you just drag & drop the file from desktop to tablet? not through adb
---------- Post added at 08:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:43 PM ----------
Although, interestingly enough, the tablet does not lag if I adb push the file instead of transferring it through file manager on Windows... weird.

Yea so it seems it's a Nexus 9 issue, cause just as in your case through adb push the tablet doesn't lag. Well, if my benchmarks were close to yours, I guess there is nothing wrong with my tablet and Google just goofed with the Nexus 9 shame...

First issue ever.. Bootlooping

So I was using my prime inbetween finals today..
So I was using wifi kill to get back some bandwidth on the school network..... (i have used this same app before on the prime worked fine! NO. Reboots intact this was my first ever reboot..)
Then when I am done downloading my file and exit wifi kill bam instant reboot then I let it do its thing for Atleast 5 minutes... Nothing but the asus screen..
So then I wipe data... Try to start nothing
Try loading recovery kernel I get the dead android guy with the exclamation mark.. Then it reboots and loops again. This time I waited 20 minutes..
Now all that is left to do is try unzipping the firmware onto a micro sd and trying to flash the recovery kernel from that...
Of course we have no ADB because of the fact it needs asus sync to work and the tablet needs to be on for that to work... And of course the bootloader is locked...
My prime was perfect for the almost 1 month I had it
No reboots no screen bleed gps worked fine.. Wifi was fast and range was good.. Nothing just perfect!

Dang, sorry to hear that. Did you still have the overclock applied while this happened? Anything else you can think of that you did or added to prime after rooting? running any extra scripts other than overclock?
Maybe try killing the battery to do a reboot like that. so old processes or whatever cause it will more than likely be killed. What kind of file did you download? seems like the file or app you used has something to do with it since it happened immediately after.
Good luck getting it up n running. Keep us posted.

No I have ran the apps (wifi kill almost every day) before and the file was a harmless playstation 1 rom zip
Overclock was not applied........ I have changed nothing in the system files except for throwing in a better GPS config file but I have shut the prime off many times before this... Hell I even left all of the bloatware!
the only thing else I can think of was that I was listening to music VIA headphones.... then all of a sudden it started playing over the speaker even though the headphones where plugged in....... it was really weird.... I forgot to mention this part as I almost got in trouble because other kids where still finishing their Final
Because this was the first time I had used headphones in it........ never check that before.....
One thing you could try would be the pin hard reset........not sure which pin hole to use but look it up.....might get you out of your boot loops.

Good post, OP. It proves karma is real, and that people who are pr!cks get what's coming to them.
ARP spoofing (what Wifikill does to disrupt other connections) is an old man-in-the-middle attack that can be used for wiretapping. IOW, it's ILLEGAL and you can be prosecuted. Would that happen? Probably not, depending on where you use it and how vigilant IT is.
But what will happen is that if you use it on a regular basis--or if you publicize it on forums so more dweebs like you can get their paws on it to get their "whoa cool" kicks--IT will get annoyed from all the complaints and will trace you down. Hope you like long vacations, because for a work or school setting, you will be somewhere else after they get done with you.
Edit: For those who have their Internet connection disrupted by twits using ARP spoofers like wifikill, there are Anti Netcut for Windows, and Wifi Protector for Android. Protector is a paid app, but the author has made it free here on XDA. If you use a hotspot, this is a must-have.
I've not used either, but from Wifi Protector's blurb below, you can pinpoint the attacker's IP and MAC, and report it to your admin.
For those putting up a public hotspot, better routers have a "client isolation" setting. Enabling this setting should defeat many MITM attacks. If your router doesn't have this, get one that does.
ARP attacks aren't new, and there are ways to bring the attackers to heel. The people likely to get hurt most are the mom & pop stores that don't know how to protect themselves, like these folks.

Thanks for this. I actually used this to show a Verizon employee the dead pixel my brand new Galaxy S3 had. We used the touchscreen test mode to circle the area with the dead pixel. It showed up nicely on the white background.

Did they replace it? I was under the impression they don't warrantee against dead pixels, which would infuriate me.
The proximity sensor on this phone has much better range than my old phone. In good light, with a piece of white paper, the prox sensor would consistently get tripped at 9cm (3 1/2 inches)!, which is almost double my old phone's.

You have to put your finger directly on the light sensor (directly to the left of the front cam) for it binary flip from 1 to 0. It doesn't show gradually reduced sensor values as you approach.

The initial floor employee would not acknowledge the problem. He kept saying "oh they won't see it and I'll get fired, etc". I remained calm but continued to press him about it, but he wouldn't budge.
I got frustrated and after arguing with him on a different route (the 14-day exchange period) he even refused to acknowledge that Verizon obliges themselves to a 14-day return. I pressed him more on it before he finally went to talk to a manager, and said "oh right we can do that". I was grudgingly going to pay the $35 restocking fee out of frustration.
Eventually, after he fumbled with the computer system for a good 20 minutes or more, he got the manager to look at the computer. The manager then asked me to see my phone, and I put it into the hardware test mode and showed him the affected area. He made a quick call to another store, as he was wondering if they had any similar problems (he said one person's phone had a damaged back plate out of the box).
After he saw the dead pixel he confirmed that I could swap it out for free. I apologized for making a fuss over a single dead pixel, but he assured me I didn't have to explain myself, and that he would have done the same thing had he paid for a defective device.
So, yes, I did get them to replace it, but only after an hour and a half of waiting, arguing, more waiting, etc.
Thankfully my new Galaxy S3 seems fine.

That's because of 1gb ram
The launcher redraws making the phone unusable for a short period of time .
Bad architecture.
I thought that would be good, obviously it's not......I know the external ram/memory's better but it's the internal one that counts when operating.....so that's it then, I'm stuck unless I change phones

I just tested you scenario on my phone running stock rooted rom ELLA guess it depends on what you mean by a bad lag.
Tried from stock browser to messaging and stock browser to contacts and its almost instant just as long as it take to tap the home button to close the browser and tap the icon to open messaging or contacts, can't actually time.
Tried it from a 3rd party browser the same way and the same results basically tap home to close and tap icon to open app for contacts or messaging.
I have not disabled animations or anything like that, but just wondered if you have anything like virus scanners or app managers running on your phone as they may casue delays.
Nope no virus scanners ect ect running, and anything I found running I didnt need/want (and it was quite a few) I turned off
When I say in real time, it's about 3-5 seconds, that's going back to the home screen coming from the net, it doesnt matter if I press soft key back button or the hard key in the middle, it's bad either way
These phones are expensive enough

Just had a look to see how many processes are running in the application manager and there are 17, it isn't something that has bothered me so I have not stopped anything it just does what it does. I can say the process from pressing the home button to close either the stock browser or third party browser is almost instant at any time, its just press then the app is closed, it isn't something I can time but would guess at about half a second, it realy is just press and its closed.
As I mentioned I am running the stock rooted ELLA non branded UK rom and I don't have any lag anywhere, I know this doesn't help you solve the problem of the lag but if you are on the same rom maybe do a foctory reset, clear the cache and dalvik in recovery then set up the phone again.it will be a littile slow for the first day but after that it should run properly, without lag.
Don;t forget to backup contacts etc if you do decide to do this, it may be worth a try.

LTE means Long-term evolution and implies the use of 4G networking. A lot higher speeds than HSPA+.
I didnt realise it's the Note 2....it's even bigger than the S3, and I'm just about managing with one with this, It'd be 2 hands with the other one
Is there anyway the S3's ram can be doubled or no

Yes, kind of. It's called "S3 LTE" and is a different phone from the normal S3. The S3 LTE has the model number i9305 and has similar hardware to the i9300. What differs though is 2GB's of ram and an LTE capable modem chip.
Ok, but it's a physically bigger phone, and like I say, I'm just managing the size of the S3 with 1 hand, I'd be back to using 2 with the other
Can the S3 be upgraded to 2gb or is that a no no

It's a no. You're not getting me, the S3 LTE isn't a bigger phone. Don't confuse the i9305 S3 LTE with the i7105 Note 2 LTE.

But anyways, try clearing data from the camera app. Settings > apps > Camera
Xperia 1, sorry fault in typing. I tried this 3 times, but no change
I have also had this problem. The camera app is trash. The battery and screen are the only things going for this overpriced junk. Sony should deliver more for the price they are asking.

Camera app is trash, It's slowest app on the entire phone. I don't have any issues on other apps loading but Camera app takes seconds to load.
Like the OP said photos are being processed and it's not saved for a long time. Need a restart of the entire phone to get them to work.
Then again sometimes photos are saved as green, like complete useless.
And you shouldn't say like sell it and move on cause us/consumers bought this phone paying $1000 because we have a trust in the company, And I have been using Sony for the past decade, I always had problems with their camera app. It's so laggy.
From the start to transition of three cameras then video recording lag, no smoothness in zooming in during video etc. But why I buy Sony? cause I have a faith that in some point they will fix it, but they never do. Then you may ask why I still buy Sony cause I love the design and as a hardware product Sony has a very minimal failure rate. Like my XZP I have used for entire two years, never gave me a single issue except for laggyness of the camera.
So when someone comes and complains an issue in Q&A and when they are really pointing out a real issue don't say "Sell it and Move on if you're not happy." it's like you're making Sony Mobile extinct. Your attitude makes them wanna quit mobile developing. So think about it before say something like this before, Don't be that guy in the internet. :highfive:

Camera does load slow, but I can live with it. Photos do not take a long time to process. I don't need to restart my phone in order to get them to work. Photos never saved as green for me. But of course, my experience is different from others.
Never had recording lag. Smoothness well yeah it's not smooth. I bought Sony because I like Sony as well. Have been using Xperia since 2014.
Do a software repair, which usually fixes 99% of all problems. I'm just saying, if you're not happy, then sell and move on. Complaining won't get you anywhere, will only get you so far.

No you can't live with that, It's a real bummer that it takes ages to load, I mean it's 2019 and take a look at other OEMs how much attention they pay to their cameras. This is why Sony is lagging behind. Look how much Sony's other divisions listen to consumer. I don't think I can accept the fact that it takes like 2 seconds to load the app. There was a time Camera app was really fast to open.

Well Zooming in isn't really smooth if you hadn't used it, This proves how often do you use the camera app. It's like these things are new to you.
Have you used a compact camera? or a camcorder? It's like that. https://youtu.be/WHpo-Dl4yt4?t=465
Take a look at this and see cause he literally explains the smoothness on zooming in and the recording. Frames dropping when the phone gets heated up.
Then again I feel like this 960fps is fun to use when you get it first but how often do you use it. I'd rather have 1080p 120fps/240fps, 4K 24fps/30fps/60fps and a smooth transition in cameras which is totally can be done by software. Sony needs to focus on the camera app and be serious about it. I mean they headed in the right direction with this phone but they cut it off immediately by delivering a mediocre camera software. I wouldn't mind them contacting Google and asking them to use Gcam on this phone, like literally let google use Googles software cause it's that bad. I use it and I take photos and I do love the photos comes out of this phone, I genuinely do and I wanna use the camera a lot but I get bored and tired of using it cause the restrictions they have.

Bro why would I be doing software repairs for silly problems like this? This easily can be fixed with a software update. Plus If I keep doing software updates for each and every problem I have with the phone, I would be only doing that but not using the phone. SOFTWARE REPAIR IS NOT A FIX.
Sony should serious about smart phone cameras as they're with mirrorless and RX-100 series. Don't say sell it and move on to a guy who's been using Sony phones from 2005 when Sony was with Ericsson, when Sony was having some of the best camera phones.: highfive:

I can live with it. Because I'm patient. I'm not sure how you can dictate if I can live with how things are or not. Again, the photos process fast for me without any problems. Regardless if I save on the SD card or internal storage.
Software repair is a fix for some issues. Hence "repair". It solves a lot of software problems. You've been using phones since 2005? Congrats! AFAIK, there's internal struggles with their Alpha cameras and mobile, hence the bad connection between the two. The current (new) president of Sony mobile was the first to "unite" them in a way.
But anyways, you have your opinions, I have mine. Don't try to force your way on me, especially from someone who has been "using Sony phones from 2005".
I suggested a fix via Software Repair. If it doesn't work, complain on the proper forum; or sell and move on.
Ok i have this problem too... And its really annoying because when i want to find it in my album last pic that i took its not there
Had this problem to.
Hard reset fixed it for me. (Hold volume up + power until 3 times vibration)
I have to agree with you chesterr...
This isnt the way Sony handled us. Btw Using Sony (ericsson) since the phones with the first color screens.
Cmon, its a flagship phone. How can your phone/app be laggy?
Look at the sections of sony phones, its just empty.
Why?
Because of the "I am sony, I am high class" logic.
I know they are busy with the new android but atleast fix those minor bugs.. Its really frustating. It has nothing to do with patience. What if you need to take a picture of a fast moving object? Shoot out with "hey wait I have patience! Im gonna take a picture"!?
Be realistic. No offence of course.
in gallory app, there is a troubleshooting option in in-app settings, it can solve ur problem.
or, you can disable sony's gallory app, use other gallory app like Google Photos instead.

Oddly I do not have this problem with the launch of the camera. It does not even take a half-second to open the application, taking photos longer is quite logical because there is an intermediate (the dram). Moreover, the xperia 5, which does not have dram, taking photos is faster. For unregistered photos I wonder if this is not a material design defect related to the dram since there are only some people who are concerned and not all of the users.

The problem is launching from the lockscreen with the camera button. Camera icon works flawlessly.
So the dram chip is a complete failure then?

the dram is actually much faster but acts like a cache. So in practice, the data is stored on the dram then the internal memory or the microsd and a delay is mandatory. The advantage of the dram is to be able to offer a better bursts or an idle 960 fps. A good example for the transfer delay is in a reflex camera where you can see the buffer empty during a burst. But for unregistered photos a problem of dram is not an exclude it is only flash memory and in this area it's pretty recurrent I had several defective ssd or ram to the purchase . Obviously this is only an assumption I would prefer that it is purely software for those concerned by the problem

Even from the lockscren I do not have that, after the camera is torn down in the android battery optimization, and I activated the smart launch as well as the immediate take. That may be the difference.

I hope it's software but weird that not all models are affected in this case, maybe a poorly done update. Always tried a repair / reset, if it still may be a hardware defect, I had once had a problem recording 960 fps on the premium xz and that was the dram the problem

Yes, tried I hope your problem will be solved. Have a good day
Android optimization? How?
I made an account just to reply here for whoever may one day face this issue - I just purchased an xperia XZ [I know its 2021 and its from 2016] anyway, I love xperia phones and am replacing my xperia z3+
Anyway!
TO FIX THIS =============================
First test to verify --- REMOVE YOUR SD CARD [Can you see your photos?]
IF YES
THEN
FORMAT YOUR SD CARD AS EXTERNAL / INTERNAL STORAGE [whichever option you are allowed I chose external]
Your problem will then be fixed.
I tried transferring my sd card from previous xperia directly to my new one and thats what caused this problem.
I hope this helps you, don't be upset, its a wonderful device.... <3

Major screen issues after Jan 26 update

A few hours after yesterday's upgrade, my mostly new (6 months) S21+ started having display/screen issues.
I have googled this but found nothing similar. There appears to be a repetitive shape (puzzle like) on the phone that makes things super hard to read, and there is something like green, black and purple bleeding. Photos attached.
Has anyone seen anything like this?
I have filed a repair service ticket since the phone is still under warranty, but since I am abroad it will be a pain to get it fixed.
My next step before mailing the phone to the US for repair, is to do a factory reset as recommended by tech support.
But I am just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue and if it can be repaired easily.

That ain't pretty...
What does it look like with ScreenTest?
Looks like hardware. Could be the download/install got corrupted; I really don't like OTA updates.
Factory reset. If it's still doing it it's likely hardware. A lot of Samsung display failures in the last year it seems. It will at the very least need to be reflashed.
Make sure to backup all critical data...
I haven't tried ScreenTest... I will try it now
Yeah.... I am backing everything up before doing the factory reset.
Thanks for your reply
So I ran the screen test, red, green and blue and black and everything looks good... this is so weird?
Then I powered off the phone and back on and the green purple bleeding is much less. The text is now mostly readable. The weird puzzle shape is still there.
I guess the next step should be the factory reset?

Try clearing the system cache... (edit)
After seeing the phone dialing screen I don't think the ScreenTest will be any better. It may give you more insight though.
Now you see why I almost never update. The current Android 9 load on this phone will be 2yo in June, still fast and stable with minimal maintenance.
Android 9 and up are reasonably secure. I wouldn't update unless the current version isn't fulfilling its mission. The Fold variants probably have the most to gain from firmware upgrades.

Not display hardware it seems... interesting.
Try clearing the system cache.
Try in safe mod.
There have been reports of older apps glitching Android 12 up. Try using the factory theme if you aren't; older Galaxy themes may not be compatible with the newer OS.

After the factory reset you will still be running on the version you just updated to. Only the user data partition gets set back to its default values.
Bear in mind what I said about safe mode (3rd party apps) and the Galaxy theme that's running.
Maybe icon packs too... what a mess.
These are known issues. May not be anything wrong with the firmware. Android is putting developers through hell trying to be compatible with 12.
You should do a factory reset but then be careful what you load. Keep an eye on it. Uninstall any app that's not compatible as you load them.
Do system app updates one at a time, they could be a culprit.
Clear the system cache again after reloading everything.
Sorry I keep editing these posts. Really all I do to sort out most problems is to play with it.
That sometimes means multiple factory resets if you can't ID the problem. Put some thought into what your doing to try to avoid that and hopefully identify the source of any issues after the reset.
FRP... wipe your Google account from the phone before you reset and do the hard reset from settings vs the boot menu. I do the same with the Samsung account as well. Getting locked out isn't pretty or simple to fix.
If you don't like the upgrade it may be possible to roll it back (reflash) if the boot loader version hasn't been upgraded too.
Good news... before proceeding with the factory reset (it scares me to do it) I removed some apps: instagram, facebook, wodify and regram. Other apps had not been updated since the last Android update, so I started updating them one by one: messenger, google maps, google photos, instagram.
Now the phone is 90% better!!
Yay. 90%? Still display issues?
I would ditch those social media apps, they are malware in of themselves
If I can't excess and use a forum through the browser I will not use it. Especially fb.

the repetitive shapes are still there but more faint... but now I can now red and view everything. A little bit of purple and green but barely noticeable.
Try using a fixed frequency like 60hz for the display. See if/how that effects it.
Does brightness level effect it? Full brightness?
Is it doing that in safe mode now?

Let me google how to use a fixed frequency
I am not on safe mode, but I tried it and it looks the same.
Brightness does affect it... it looks a bit better. Actually it seems like brightness has diminished. Before I barely had the brightness set to like 10%... now that is too dark and the weird shapes show more. If I increase the brightness it looks better

See if there's any system app updates on Playstore for it.
If you're in the US you can take it to a Samsung Experience center at a participating Best Buys store. They can run more advanced diagnostics on it or may know just by seeing it.

You're welcome. Sorry to see you're having so much trouble with it.
Play with the new firmware and see if you like it.
If you like the previous version better the Experience Center may be able to flash it back to that version.
