G2 mini - very innacurate cell tower location - LG G2 Mini

Hi, I have very inaccurate location based on the cell tower triangulation (in building), it shows me my location to be almost 100 m away outside of the building. (my friends with G2 and S3 has got correct location in the building , when they are on the same place as me).
Please do you have any tip, how to fix it? Or there is nothing I can do with it? (only to buy a new mobile)

cell tower location is always inaccurate. your friends were probably using wifi location. in settings, these two are together called battery saving location. just turn on your wifi and you'll have the right location displayed, you don't need to be connected to the wifi network, you just need any kind of internet connection

Well actually we have both switched wifi off (and we turned off the GPS in location menu). and we have the same net provider. I have even downloaded antennas program, and put it on the both mobiles, they are at the same place and both shows a different location.

GPS is very poor on the G2 Mini, that's probably why.

lol if you turn gps off, your phone just shows the last location it remembers.. also, it is possible that one of you has turned an option on, which enables for the phone to look up wifi location even when wifi is turned off

yep, that would be the reason - their GPS can fix the location even in the building, so the last location is from the building... Thank you for your tips, I will not any more waste your time... Another lesson is learned, next time, when I buy a mobile, I will run a GPS test to be able to return it within 14 days of protection period...

Location Based Services using Sim Card/Cellular, No GPS, No Data Usage

When Using a Pakistani Sim Card in Pakistan, I realised that the phone's location was being shown on the main screen (within like a 2 street radius) , it was on a Nokia 6300, so there wasn't any data usage or gps involved, I was wondering How this could be possible on an Android phone, and how to program with it, as it would be more power efficient than using a gps (more or less), for an app I am looking to develop, but I can't find anything about it anywhere.
Thanks in advance.
Questions should be asked in Q&A forums, not Development forums.

This is what you get asking LocationManager for a "coarse" location. Instead of using GPS, it's using the ID of cellular base stations and WiFi hotspots, asking Google for the coordinates of them. The Nokia must have tabulated the locations of the cell base stations, if not using mobile data.

WiFi location problem Xperia S

For some reason, my location is incorrectly picked up as Kunming on my Xperia S sometimes.
I live in Ireland so don't know why that is happening.
Seems to be more frequent on home WiFi so I think it could happen when weak signal from WiFi network.
Anyone any ideas?

I've the same problem occasionally also. I don't believe it's a phone issue more, I think it's to do with the range of IP address your internet provider uses, IP ranges are assigned to countries/areas this is how I believe geo-location with wifi works.I'm assuming there's a database somewhere with IP address ranges and there approximate location. I power off my router each day so get a new IP each day, so the longest I have the problem is 24 hours. I'm with Vodafone, on a land-line and it tells me i'm in Switzerland ! Next power cycle and everything is back to normal.
I could also be completely wrong.
It uses Google's database to match your IP (or your hotspot's external IP) to a location. Sometimes it works great, sometimes less so. Not much you can do about it. It's probably weighted though so logging in to a local version of Google might help.

[Q] Triangulate GSM cell towers for location

Hi guys,
Have you ever heard about the location search function on certain carriers?
For example, X wants to know where Y is, both doesn't have GPS or internet function. X sends an sms to the carrier to locate a number.
Y then receives an sms for permission to allow X to know his/her location. When approved, X receives the location of Y.
I was wondering if this can be done on our phones to know our own location?
Benefits:
-saves battery (not using data or GPS)
-saves time (don't have to search for satellites)
I found out on how to calculate our longitude and latitude from here:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...triangulate-gsm-cell-towers-to-get-a-location
Maybe when we get our longitude and latitude, we can trick our phone by thinking it is a GPS data, allowing navigation apps like Google Maps to point our location.
Any devs wanna work on this project?
Lol just turn off your gps and use mobile internet in gmap. You can see tower based location in map

With what I suggested, you don't need internet
All you need is a normal GSM connection.

without internet I think its not possible because gmap need internet connection to load the area. Latest gmap has the Offline Map feature where we can preload an area. When we visit that area,we can get turn by turn navigation without internet

Okay. Assume we have an offline map like you mentioned above.
What do you use to determine your location for that turn by turn navigation?
Gmaps uses GPS or internet to determine our location.
But our carriers determine our location from the strength of tower signals around you.
Open the link on the 1st post for a detailed explanation on how it works.

It doesn't use internet because it only uses the coordinate of nearby towers and their signal strength to calculate our location.
Hope any devs can make an app to read tower information, calculate coordinates and point it on a map, tricking it into believing it comes from GPS or data connection.

Doesn't work with Sygic. It still needs GPS.
Is there any way of making your phone think that data from GSM triangulation is coming from GPS?

How to use 3G data connection same time wifi?

I have a technical question ... you can use the 3G network for surfing the Internet and at the same time the wifi network to move files only?
Simply put no. Phones are not made to use 2 different wireless signals at once.
Bat cave One
The only way to use both is setting a Wi-FI access point on your phone. Still, you can't do things you want to: PC connects to smartphone just to get internet data.
No there is no way around it.

Do you even understand what your asking? Voice and data are 2 very different things. Data and call signals are handled by different process. The antenna are set to do one voice and one data. Think about it. Even dual sim card devices can only use one at a time.
Bat cave One
Yes I understand ... so it is not technically possible to manage wifi and 3g antenna at the same time because data can only handle one job at a time? I thought the wifi module and the module 3g were managed separately...
This is an android software limitations?
When you use the wifi 3g module is put into the off state to save battery, works only the incall module. When you disable the wifi 3g module change the status to up. About your question no, it's impossible to use wifi and 3g at the same time to make 2 different operation

thanks for the reply. just in my office I have a wifi router with no internet connection, are connected with the phone to surf the intranet. so I would keep the connection 3g to receive notifications from whattsup or other ... every time without having to turn off and on the wifi. It does not seem like a stupid question.
This is not directly related to your problem but using wifi and mobile data at the same time seems to be possible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667025
Tank you, i see that... But you can only download a file....
I read of a change made to the file system / framework / services.jar
But i don't know if it work....

That's incorrect. Android phones can use multiple wireless signals at once (wifi, cell, mobile data, bluetooth, nfc). And they can have multiple network interfaces up at the same time just like any linux box can. It just happens that the network manager turns of mobile data when you turn on wifi, but that's on purpose (to save you battery/cost), and not because the phone isn't capable of it.
Not sure why you say with such authority there's no way around it. If you don't know the answer to something for sure, better don't give a wrong answer.
There's even an app on the play store that can loadbalance a download over wifi and mobile data at the same time:

I say this from past experience that the WiFi antenna could not get a signal at the same time as the data antenna.
Now while this may have changed. I will look into it myself before I pay much heed to it as anything more then smoke and mirrors.

But this has been around for awhile (though not as advanced, obviously...)

But as far as being able to use both separately at the same time would probably be a pain to implement in many phones.

Why can't I enable GPS without agreeing to some data downloads?

Just got my Z2 and I'm practicing in offline/unregistered mode because I plan to use the phone without Internet during a trip abroad. Got OsmAnd installed with maps etc.
Problem is, I can't enable GPS without agreeing to some data collection on me:

"The device"? Is this some SONY crap, or Google's Android? How will performance be improved?
How do I disable this if I don't want my location sent to some random server? If I Disagree, GPS stays disabled.

In the Location menu in settings, set Location mode to "Device only", you'll notice if you select "High Accuracy", not only does it say it'll use Wi-Fi and mobile networks to determine location, it'll also have the notice about data usage pop up, Device only means it will solely use GPS to determine location.
Probably to help get the initial fix for your position?

Imagine High Accuracy mode as A-GPS, using data networks to download GPS coordinates as well as getting your location from IP address location and network proximaty etc
Device only wont use any data networks or cellular information either, try it out anyway, take your sim card out and turn wifi off and go for a walk, see if it works.
It just downloads agps data which helps, making the gps fix much faster. Since this download may charge your service fee, you get the warning. Its nothing about Sony, every phone with gps does that.
