[Q] Painful Stock Lollipop Experience - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I along with many other T-Mobile S5 users have patiently awaiting the arrival of 5.0 Lollipop for our beloved device...........Its finally here and is beautiful to look at but a pain in the ass to use.
WHY??!?!?!?
I've been running the update since its launch in the U.S. and its ridiculously slow and unresponsive! WTH Samsung?
Simple things like opening the SMS app takes long to load and even longer to load the conversations.
Tapping the recents key takes almost 4 seconds to open the task switcher.
simple animations that occurred seamlessly on kitkat now take seconds to go thru.
Toast popups take forever to dismiss.
compared to 4.4.4 kitkat, lollipop drops the ball on speed when it should have no problems as its running 2.5GHZ.
i stuck with it for almost 2 weeks, i ran multiple cache wipes and factory resets only to have the same slow unresponsive $600+ device.
i now run Fusion Rom 5.0.2 and the phone is lightning fast! no complaints on the speed but to loose so many GS5 specific features absolutely sucks! no more fingerprint scanner, no more IR blaster drivers, no more GS5 camera.......which i loved!
Fusion ROM is my savior but damn, i still want my factory software with all my features back but at the speeds kitkat provided.....is that to much to ask for???
has anyone had this issue? its the same on my girlfriends s5 but lets face it, shes a chick and is nowhere near technologically inclined lol.
please help meh! any alternatives? different kernals? something please!

Sounds like a bad flash or incompatible data lingering causing the lag. I would start with a new Odin flash immediately followed by factory data reset. Also, turn off animations from developer options.
My stock, rooted setup is very smooth w/no lag.

That's something I haven't tried. I was rooted on stock 4.4.4, I unrooted and reflashed the stock recovery and ran the OTA. I didn't really do a clean install, I still retained all of my app data and user data. That could be the issue. I'm surprised I didn't think of that in the first place. I'll flash the stock sammobile lollipop firmware thru Odin and will post my results, hopefully it helps. Thanks for the input.

Remember even the Odin .tar is a "no wipe" .tar so you will need to do a factory data reset after flashing in order to get a true clean install.

I like Omega ROM. It's a TW ROM that is close to stock and is fast and smooth. It's in the 900F section. A LOT of people use it.

My experience was EXTREME loss of battery life. Like it went down by 75% even with factory resets and all that. I finally just put KitKat back on and everything is better. Not sure Lollipop has enough to tempt me away from KitKat again.

Ok, i flashed the stock 5.0 firmware with odin and did a factory reset.
So, from what i can tell.......and tell me if this makes sense.
After starting clean, i had the exact same issues so decided, let me be patient and maybe the new os needs time to settle. Since the 30th of march, lollipop has slowly "healed" itself......day by day, it gets faster and more responsive but.....theres always a but.......ive been presented with more problems. I get non stop toasts saying contacts app has stopped working.....even tho i NEVER use the contacts app. My heart beat scanner doesnt work, the red light no longer shows. My led doesnt work properly, it only shows when the phone is charging and now, the worst of them all. My battery life has gone down the drain BIGTIME. To the point where my phone is dead in an hour with minimal use......today, I did a reflash when I got to work except this time, I chose to boot to boot loader and just let the phone sit for a few hours. Now she works great, fast as hell and responsive but with the same dramatic battery decrease...........I'm now married to my charger.
Stock just doesn't seem to be living up to its promises in the battery life department which is a really big deal.
This sucks......
I'm now running KitKat and can definitely agree, the materialistic ui is nice as hell but that's not enough to take me back to lollipop.....at least as far as the tmogs5 klte goes.

^ You may want to try flashing a custom kernel like ktoonsez's . For the contacts app force closes, disabling "Google+" app helps.

2.5GHz? Noooo, more like 1.4GHz. Use CPU Z and see for yourself. The governor is interactive and I barely see the phone run at 2.5GHz. Lollipop has been slower in some parts but it has resolved some kitkat issues. 5.1 is very stable. Sammy needs to skip 5.0.1 and 5.0.2.

Issues After Updating Unrooted Tab

I updating my unmodified Tab 10.1 Wifi last night. The update is pretty amazing, if not a bit uglier. But suddenly I am having a ton of issues.
Worst of all is the lag. All the animations are suddenly very laggy and abrupt. Nothing is smooth anymore, when stock Honeycomb used to be very smooth. I talked to my friend, and he isn't having this issue after the official update.
Also, haptic feedback on the stock Android keyboard doesn't work anymore.
Then, Rock Player won't play MKVs with hardware decoding as it used to, and it's COMPLETELY messed up playing it with software decoding. A ton of distortion. Stock player won't play it either.
My dad took my tablet to play Angry Birds, and he says it kept crashing. I tried to play afterward, and it crashed. Just disappears without warning or any FC.
Also, I tried typing this on my tablet. It's now impossible to type (and this isn't limited to browser either) because the tablet is so laggy. Letters are missed, sometimes 3 at a time. I have to hold every button for it to register. Before I could type incredibly fast.
I removed all the widgets and turned off Samsung Apps running in the background, and it's slightly better but still very bad. Any tips guys? Because if not, I'm going to root it and flash a custom ROM. Hopefully the clean start and optimizations will fix it all.

Same thing with me, although I haven't gone through any heavy app use yet, my home screens lag a lot more than they ever did before TW. Google Music also forced closed on me a few times while syncing with the Google servers.
This is after installing a stock build of the OTA via Clockwork. I'm really not too sure what is going on, since mostly everyone else is reporting that everything is very very smooth on their end.
Thanks for the confirmation that at least someone else has my issues. I guess tonight is rooting/flashing night for me. I missed it, after trading my Captivate for a Veer for the next month or two. Though webOS is boss

I Wiped Data and reflashed the ROM, now Im just waiting for a 100 percent charge, and I'm going to try this again. I'll report back.
Here's a question, have you tried restarting the tab, and if you did, did it help any with the lag?
Do a factory restore then after you complete the initial setup, leave it for about 15mins. I did that after I updated since I also noticed some lag on the homescreens and app crashes. Now everything runs smooth as silk and noticeably faster than when it was stock.

Factory restore through settings? I'd need to root it for TiBu first anyway. Thanks, I'll try that before flashing.
Also my tab was completely unmodified. It was android 3.1 as it came out of the box, of which I did the touchwiz OTA update this morning.

OK so I rooted my Tab, flashed Clockwork, backed up all my stuff with TiBu, and factory reset. Most of the lag is gone! I can finally type things really fast without it all going to hell! This makes me happy. Baltic on stock Android keyboard is still gone, but this has been an issue with TouchWiz before on the Captivate. I remember with the Froyo leaks, how the stock keyboard had no haptic... it was fixed eventually. I'm not too worried. So my next step is to flash a new ROM, that one with the black bar. Just for the optimizations, and because I miss flashing since I have a webOS device now. Well thanks for the help with the suggestion for the factory reset, my tablet is usable again! Thanks guys!
Last comment. StarBurst is incredibly smooth I flashed it and can't be happier!
Yeah my problems are mostly gone too. I did a factory reset and then reflashed the rom, then I let it sit after boot-up for 20 minutes, rebooted, let it sit for another 5, and then rebooted again. A lot smoother this time around. Was probably just a bad flash.
Glad yours is working well too!

SGS III Performance issues

Hello,
After a year or so after buying a SGS III, I started experiencing slowdowns. Six months later I installed Android 4.3 as it was available with OTA. I run official ROM, nothing fancy. Now, I experience serious performance slowdowns during new screens loading, switching applications, any action in fact can be slow; when I listen to music (standard player) sometimes I get 10 cuts in a song.
I have like 60 apps installed. My average RAM load is 750 MB / 831 MB.
I have never reset to Factory defaults. I just tried deleting all my text msgs to improve loading, it dit not change anything.
I imagine the current services load is too heavy for a pretty old phone. Is this the reason for huge performance slowdowns (sometimes 5 secs delays)?
I also fear the development of the Samsung layer is pretty bad. When you take into account, the poor dev capabilities Samsung demonstrated with Kies, or with PC interface (I struggle uploading files to the device, it gets deconnected all the time). I think Samsung is good at electronics, but bad at software; this would be a personal "feeling". I aslo experienced huge performance drops with SGS1.
What do you think of the reasons for performance issues with SGSIII ?
You are on unmodified stock, that is the reason.

No troll please, it s too easy
one more thing
There is one more think I wanted to add: I wonder if Samsung does not use "programmed obsolescence" (don't know if it is the correct term)...
No, I wasn't trolling. Unmodified stock has over sixty processes and services running all the time while most users only need four or five.
Over time and use the system will slow even further as firmware updates and third party apps interfere.
The phone hardware is well up to running 4.3, just not sixty things at once.
Your first step is to backup your personal data then factory reset and format the internal storage. This will improve things immediately but until you switch to a custom firmware, even one with a stock base, you will not solve the problem.
Even on stock firmware you can disable 80% of the junk Samsung installed.
Very honest opinion.. Just flash your phone with Cyanogen or another custom ROM.. This should be the best bet for you!
You should get KitKat 4.4.4 as of now.

Thanks for your explanations, they are helpful.
I experienced huge performance drops one year or so after installing Darky ROM on my SGS1; I had to switch back to stock ROM. That's why I'm not eager to try the "custom ROM experience" again; it takes too much time.
I still have two questions to you, you seem to know well this Android subject:
1. Does the factory reset changes the ROM installed, or just wipes the user data?
2. How do I disable some stock services? Is there a good app? (I could not find anything useful by forum search)
AOSP Custom rom is for the enthusiast only, as they all come with drawbacks like shorter battery life or hardware issues. Custom rom based on stock is suitable for daily use, as they are just debloated.
Factory reset only wipes user data.
App manager, click on the service or app then disable button. Caution that some are essential to things you might need, search and read here on xda for guides on what is pure bloat.
Bro! I'm using the same phone. Had loads of problems with Samsung's TouchWiz. Your phone is absolutely fine. Use Cyanogen CM11 it is way better. I have been using Cyanogen for almost 6-7 months and honestly I have had problems but XDA is always full of solutions.
Go to "get.cm" and use the automatic installer to install cyanogen into your phone without you having to do anything such as rooting and flashing.. Cyanogen Installer does it automatically for you. If you are not satisfied you can always manually install cm

Which is of course free of cost!! You just need 4 things
1. Samsung GS3 i9300
2. USB
3. A PC
4. INTERNET

Thanks for the hints. I found this thread witch can be helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/themes-apps/applications-safe-to-remove-t1069924
I think I will use Titanium Back Up App to remove unused services. Crap, I'll have to root the phone! I ll wait till I get a new phone, I'm looking for a good LTE-A no QHD (just FullHD) candidate.
Returning to the thread point, does all brands have this kind of performance problems or are there some more stock optimized phones? I'm hesitating getting away from Samsung, even if the OLED screen are really great (excepted the color saturated ones like the Alpha's). I was told HTC was more optimizing its layer, but I don't know if it is really true...
ROOTING your phone will unlock endless possibilities!
Regarding HTC, their flagship devices are very good.. Always first with updates right after google launches for their nexus devices very good sound and faster than other same priced smart phones.
Even Nexus devices are really a great deal giving you stock android with great performance and .01% lag.
Samsung is a more feature based smart phone with over used RAM and disabling the system apps causes the system to crash every now and then. I too love Samsung devices but prefer to use the stock android or even a custom ROM instead of TouchWiz.

Eventually, I rooted my phone, as it has no more warranty anyway. I've unistalled some forced system apps, frozen some RAM resilient apps/services. Now I have an average of 200 MB free RAM and the screens loading in TouchWiz are fast as at the beginning
So, thanks to your help, I can answer my own question about performance loss: too many resilient services for a 1GB RAM phone; it's about time I get a new phone
I hesitated to root the phone because I will give it to my girlfriend and she is the type of user clicking on every OK button when she gets a dialog. How she said she will not take the phone because I tinkered with it! Ah women ...

Lag and sd card

So I have tried almost every thing to fix the lag that came with lollipop 5.1.1 my phone locks up and becomes completely unresponsive . Until I reboot. Often when I'm browsing and the phone rings I am not able to answer it and end up rebooting the phone and calling back the missed call. I was about to revert to kitkat when I decided to try removing my micro sdcard. I opened up a lot of apps YouTube Facebook Twitter etc. And had my wife call me twice. So far no problems and no lag. If I can get by for a week like this with no issues I will just live without the sdcard. Otherwise I go back to kitkat
I'm noticing the same thing on 5.1.1 and I haven't been able to isolate it. I thought it might be a corrupted app so I downgraded or reinstalled frequently used apps. Still testing. Downgrading to KK isn't an option for me because I want to be patched for stage fright. I wish they would release a KK rom that's patched.
According to the stage fright app 5.1.1 is still vulnerable.
hey ashraf sharif i've been going thru the same thing it is so annoying to have to take back cover off then batt because phone won't respond also i had to disable volte because some phone call will not ring my phone they would go straight to voice mail turn volte off fix that problem. the other thing i notice with the upgrade when you take a picture and you want to send it usually i would select the < with the 3 dots=share via and then i can pick message it no longer says that. only choice now wifi bluetooth i made a back up of 5.0 might go back to that later on today

Yeah. I hear ya. The Lookout app says I'm not patched either but I thought it was well known that OG6 patched for Stagefright. So I'm not sure I trust the Lookout app. Anyone else know for sure?
i dont remove the battery i just press vol down and home and power . this reboots it. removing the sdcard helps alot initially but the longer the phone is on the buggier it gets. im going back to kitkat
doing a ob1 right now from scratch getting tired of turning phone on off on off will leave it on ob1 until a better approve working update is put out
I'm back on nk2 kitkat towelroot. My phone seems like new. Lollipop simply demands more ram than the s5 has . This happened with the Motorola atrix when ice cream sandwich was released. Motorola decided not to upgrade the atrix . A test firmware was leaked that was extremely Laggy and drained the battery in less than half an hour. Every android phone I had ran better on the earlier firmwares. I Will Wait Another 8 Months Till My 2 S5s Are Paid Off By that Time I can get the s7. The thing that kills me is I'm not even debloated on nk2 and it runs with no stutters and freezes at all.im just glad the phone is stable again

I have the exact same issues! I was really hoping I wouldn't have them, but I do. Just started happening 2 days ago. It really really pisses me off! They should have put 3gb of ram on this phone. The note 3 has 3 and this phone came out after it. Either way, I am not happy at all! I'm going to try a couple different Roms from the international section and see what happens. But this isn't working.

I can report that after a few days of use the phone is much more responsive. All the lag seems gone.
I'm having nothing but problems with the S5 and lollipop. Major lag even after Turning down the animations. I'm using my M8 right now, and it's day and night between the 2! Samsung really dropped the ball on the S5 lollipop update. The phone should have came with 3 gigs of ram. Nuff said!

Hi I was wondering if this means you're running on KitKat, or if you went back to Lollipop. I really want to stop this lag!
I've spoken to samsung and t mobile about this lag. They both made it seem like I'm the only one with this problem. Good thing I know better.
yea just like they ashure me that they fix stagefright but every app i tried says vulnerable and not to worried also have you notice that when you take a picture and go to the top to pich share with it no longer has message every thing is either wifi this or that .but back to your question yes i went back to 5.0=OB1 firmware

Thanks and fixed
After 6.0 Im done good news
Sweet! all we need to do is wait 6 months to get it ;=\
Android versions are moving so fast now developers can barely keep up, every new version has less features than the last and by time they start added some a new version is out. Granted 5.1.1 was SOOO bad I'm on cyanogenmod and at my house I don't even have service, id rather deal with that than the phone lagging to the point I have to pull the battery. I'm going to be switching carriers and sticking with cm but this is definitely my last Samsung phone.
I must be one of the ucky few who have almost 0 issues with 0G6, the errors (bugs / problems) I do have are easily fixed by a simple reboot. As for Marshmallow, I've knows for days as I asked a store associate at my carrier store whether or not I was getting it. He checked android central (of all things) to conclude that I was receiving it. And he was right. Now the waiting commences. My only question is, how long does it take for the official firmware to be released after the OTA becomes available?
The phone is unusable on 5.1.1 I don't see it getting better on android m . I always will try a new firmware but my experience has been that any thing after dob1 is crap. and cnk2 is faster than dob1
One other thing . dont hold your breath. I remember samsung saying the gt-19300 was going to get jellybean and then they changed their mind because of not enough ram. the motorola atrix was supposed to get Ice cream sandwich and that was also rescinded due to ram issues. I will believe it when I see it.
i'm too kind of done with samsung they pack the phone with goodies that you can't enjoy if the signal issue is not fix i will change phone brand i've read motorala are excellent with signal
one more bad software and my phone will end up like a marshmallow when i get done with it.LOL

On my phone after installing fog6 it runs OK for a day or two. Then It gets very laggy. To the point where the screen completely locks up and becomes unresponsive. It freezes.once I reboot the phone it is fine for a few hours but eventually it will freeze again. Typing is hard because of lag. I will type several characters and they won't appear until several seconds later. Often times when the phone rings I try to answer it but the phone becomes unresponsive and I miss the call. I then reboot and find out who called and call them back. This almost always happens if I am using the browser or an app when the phone rings. My phone is rooted and my wife's phone is not but we both have had these lag and performance issues on fog6 and fof6. I even debloated the phones and that still didn't help the lag. A reboot will fix it for a while but the phone will always lag again and freeze up when I need it the most. This is why I reverted to dob1. It is nowhere near as laggy . But even better than dob1 in my opinion is cnk2 . It is kit Kat but runs like a dream with no lag and all apps running no need to debloat. This phone was made for kitkat. It has 2 gigs of ram. That is why it is having problems on lollipop. I don't know how your phone seems to be OK maybe you are just lucky but I use my phone heavily and sad to say it can't perform on lollipop the way it does on 442 kitkat

You just explained mine AND my girls phone exactly!!!!! Stock did it so I DE bloated both phones, same issue, Installed shinys kernel and made all the tweaks, same crap. It has nothing to do with the ram, its a software issue and to my knowledge is limited to Tmobile!
afaik the other carriers are on 5.0 which is definitely not as laggy . anyway I am on cnk2 rooted twrp recovery with xposed and everything is running awesome. i could stay with this till the s7 comes out.
5.1.1 has never been laggy and I'm on db01 running cyanideL. Ran Blisspop forever and never any lag. I've seen these post and they are mostly from the same people who have jumped on every firmware update the moment it came out and got jocked everytime! They have caused the issue themselves trying every tweak in the book; the phone final said enough

Some of us are having issues with the latest ROM and lag, slow response to input and the phone just not responding as it did under KitKat.

Not sure I agree with this. I moved from at ATT S4 running KK to the S5 running 5.1.1. S4 ran fine but just a tad slow. So I figured I'd "upgrade". BTW, I'm as stock as one can be and have the same type of issues.

My girls phone came stock with fof6 and she couldn't deal with the non stop lag so I tried debloating it for her which didn't help, At that time I was running the sickness rom and happy. Later the fog6 came out and I told her Id update her phone clean with odin to it and do mine as well as I wanted the stagefright patched and hoped that since I was several radios behind I may get better signal at my house. After that we remained stock and within days it was not usable so I began debloating both phones, which didn't help. Shinys kernel was the only thing that helped but the lag out still occurs daily. I agree updating the phone is what caused the lag, but that's what people buy new phones for and update them, to stay current!
Let's hope that the bugs are worked out in 6.0. I believe samsung knows what to do with this phone if they are updating it. We all love touchwiz and deserve the same experience, newer device owners have. All I'm saying is be thankful, because if the Korean company was right about the prediction of 6.0, we wouldn't be receiving this update at all
well it says it's done now to see how long before we get it look here=https://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones-tablets-devices/software-updates#tmoSUPDocTitle

I'm showing its still in manufacture development.
the software it self state stage 3 completed now for each diff phone is a diff story

100% stock seems to be the best.

So, I've tried every which rom out there for the nexus 6p and got tired of dealing with sub par battery life, random hangs (albeit occasionally, but precisely when I needed it to not lag) and other issues. I even tried having 100% stock but with custom recovery and systemless root. Somehow though they were nice for a while they started to slow down and act up after a while. Finally I decided to go back to stock. Fastbooted and flashed stock from Google servers and even locked the bootloader and unchecked "allow unlocking".
I can honestly say that ever since then I've had zero issues and battery life has been phenomenal. No random lags or freezes or drain.
Perhaps this is how google wants the device to be used and stock Android has something in our that works properly only on a 100% factory set software.
Yea I miss the ios style emojis and ad bocker but at least now I can be rest assured about ota updates and using the device in the way google intended and thus having the best experience??
Also I think xposed is slowing down marshmallow and giving it some issues after a while.
What do you guys think ?

Using a Stock based ROM with root, Adblocker and some Bloatware removed works the best for me. I remember Xposed to be buggy since Android 5, this is why I never used it again. Flashing Updates is not a big deal if you know how to use fastboot and how to flash single parts of a factory image.
Same here dude I have had android phones since the g1 rooted so many. I even remember when Franco was starting out lol. But with the nexus 6p I feel stock is the best experience I have tried a few ROMs but stock is great for this device... Don't get me wrong I feel I need to sometimes try a rom but I don't as it's a hassle now. 100% stock here.
I'm a happy custom rom flasher! Rocking with Chroma for now & like Sinless .. XDA Development for the win!
I'm using Pure Nexus with no issues whatsoever. It's essentially the stock ROM with a few goodies added.
That's where I'm at too. Tethering works, Android pay works, I have no problems with battery. Couldn't be better. I do miss some of the root/ROM features like center clock, different pictures on lock and home, double tap to wake and sleep though
Pure nexus works for me. But yea each phone will be a little different.
Agreed.. I buy nexus so I DON'T have to root to get that experience.

Placebo...
Absolutely not my experience. Used the phone about one month with stock ROM and flashed Chroma ROM and Franco's kernel then. First thing I noticed was the device running much cooler!! Not a single problem here...
Hmmm pure nexus with ak gives you much better performance and battery than stock.... On screwd at the moment. Also very good
Stock is stock the way the device was intended to be used. Any changes will come from the source, "customize" someone else's work lol..... Riiiiighhhht

To what are you referring? Your post doesn't make much sense. Not saying that to be rude, just trying to understand what you're saying.

If you are happy with pure stock, that's great. May I suggest unlocking that bootloader though. I've read about a couple guys where an OTA failed for whatever reason and the phone will not boot. With a locked bootloader, you have no hope of fixing it.

I second this.
Battery for me has been the same. Also that white background settings UI I hate, black background just looks so much better
Opinion I know but it's an option is lose without root
Kinda Agree.. I'm on Chroma's Rom and not rooted. I like Chroma's subtle additional settings and stock kernel plus the Phone runs great. I will only load roms that use stock kernel because of lag and additional rom anomalies that happen when i need to do something...Ugh!
Choose your apps carefully, is my advice.
If you want to use facebook/messenger. Go for tinfoil or something like that instead. Also, disable the google apps you don't use. Maps can also be done with the browser and is one of the primary battery drains for example. Just like i noticed that since i disabled chrome and went for a chromium browser, battery life has gone up! Same with swiftkey instead of google keyboard, ecspecially with a nice black skin.
And yeah, use the drawer and dock for shortcuts, don't clog your homescreen with icons and widgets. That saves memory and thus battery power.
The thing i don't get though, is that with my z1 on 4.4.4 i could easily get 3 days with 5/6 hours screen on time. I really have to do my best to get that on my 6p. Even though the battery is 500 mah larger!

Thanks for the tip. That makes sense. Perhaps when ota update comes in and updates the factory recovery, it needs the "allow unlock" button checked.
Maybe that's why it was checked by default after factory reset.
