[Q] Custom Recovery on an S4 That Won't Boot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi all,
I'm trying to help someone fix their S4 that won't boot past the Verizon logo. I had rooted the phone probably a year and half ago but I never put a custom recovery or rom on the phone, as they mostly wanted to be able to use adblock, greenify, etc. The phone has been degrading slowly, lots of "SD card has been removed" errors, and now it simply won't boot past the Verizon logo. I have tried to boot into the stock recovery and clear cache with no luck. I don't want to wipe data if I can avoid it for now.
I was wondering if someone could point me to the proper CWM or TeamWin file and the best way to install it. I'm not sure if a custom recovery will even help me get it booted at this point but I figure I might have a little more luck over using the stock recovery. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Do you know what the phone's baseband is? Chances are it's not MDK so that means to CWM, TWRP, etc. Take out the battery, put it back in and then boot to download mode then try and flash a new tar in Odin.

I don't unfortunately. I rooted it about 1.5-2 years ago. I don't remember quite well but I don't think it's been updated since, I think I froze the update notification whenever that started popping up.
Flashing it in Odin will erase all data, correct? I don't know if I have another choice at this point, just curious.

Sounds like you need to odin the stock tar. Reroot and proceede from there. Yes it will wipe user data.

[Q] Formatted

So I'm having some huge difficulties here,
My GS2 was stuck at it's boot screen after my friend apparently bullsh... with it, aaaand he admitted he wiped the whole thing with recovery mode.
That means system, data, SD Card, everything....
Now I can't recover it with Kies, I can't seem to get it to work in any way.
Would anyone here be able to tell me how to fix this?
I have considered doing it with Odin, but I don't want to risk messing it up even more than it already is.
Edit: I'm also doubting if it would even matter, doesn't Odin just change the firmware? I'd still miss the enite software package, right?
Thanks in advance!
if the system is formated from the recovery, phone will not boot, because now your phone is without a ROM, if this case is true you have already lost entire pack of softwares...if you have not made a backup you cant recover that.
get download mod and flash a stock official ROM from ODIN
nothing to worry zacq8 said right,i on purposely had done this....jus use odin ,go in download mode, and flash stock rom ..thts it simple..and do read how to flash if ya don kno......cheeeeerz

[Q] Having trouble rooting and booting into CWM

Hello all,
Firstly I'd like to say that I am a long time lurker on this website, having rooted my phones and my friends' many times thanks to the awesome help of this community. I say I'm a lurker because normally I can find solutions to any speedbumps I have very easily on this site, but alas, something has really caught me by the pants this time.
I'm having trouble rooting my second SGSIII, FCC ID A3LGTI9300A. I tried first to flash CWM recovery through Odin, and it was successful, but then it keeps booting into the stock Android recovery (I'm not sure if this is because I don't have a working SD card, but I don't think that should make a difference). To be noted, I wiped all my data and cleared the cache in the Android factory recovery by mistake (I'm not sure if this makes a difference). I read up that some other people who were having this problem took out the battery after it flashed through ODIN and then booted into CWM recovery and it worked, but it seemed to have messed up my phone, because after that I wasn't getting any network signal (my SIM card is working though). I also noticed that now when I try to boot into Recovery, I have a red exclamation mark at the left top corner of my screen, and it doesn't go into any recovery mode.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but if someone can explain to me how to properly root my device after the so much I have ****ed up, I would really appreciate it.
Best bet is to start from scratch.
Flash stock firmware
Root with cf root (this will install a 5.x.x version of cwm recovery)
Update recovery with mobile Odin or through recovery)
NOTE.....When you flash cf root occasionally it doesn't "take" properly, in which case boot into recovery and this triggers installation. (As per Chainfire instructions )
The exclamation mark came into being in any firmware after XXELLA, it's a Samsung trick to alert that the phone has been flashed. It is in the bootloader, and you can revert to an old bootloader with a cwm flashable.zip (note this is potentially risky, but it worked fine for me, although I decided to stay with a new bootloader in the end)
i'm having the same problem. i flashed through heimdall which worked great, but in order to boot into CWM i need to pull the battery right after the flash. any subsequent attempts to boot into recovery meant i needed to restart the entire process of flashing from heimdall again. surely there must be some way around this? i understand that samsung's stock recovery 'resets' the preferences so chooses to boot from it instead of the loaded recovery... and this is slowly but surely driving me crazy.
any tips, anyone?

[q] help!! Note down

So ,im sorry but its a long story. Hopefully someone can help. My note is Rooted Ive been using TWRP. Everything had been fine until 2 days ago. I tried flashing a ROM i found on Goomanger.( I had been running liquid smooth) just wanted to try something different. Anyways it got stuck on a boot loop. Cant remember the name of the Rom. Anyways i was able to get back to recovery, thankfully. But when i wiped and flashed back to liquid smooth it would say optimizing apps, then it would reach a certain number then reboot and star all over again. So then i tried another Rom and the same thing happened. tried flashing back to stock rooted but it would turn on then completely crash and star booting up again. So finally i was able to flash paraandroid 4.1.2 and Gapps, but here is the kicker i have no service (AT&T) says cannot locate network, my IMEI is gone basically the cellular isn't working. Everything else works fine WiFi,apps, camera. Just cant make calls. I really need your guys help please.:crying:
If you have a suggestion please let me know, i hate using an old Iphone

Just odin back to stock. Get a complete factory stock image from the main sticky thread and flash it with Odin and Download Mode. There's a bug on one of the TWRP versions with 4.3-based ROMs that will put it into a bootloop by breaking device reboots. I was unable to flash my way out of the problem and was forced to do a complete reimage which solved all the problems and put me right back to clean-out-of-the-box state, then I reinstalled TWRP (though an older version before the boot loop bug) and re-flashed my custom ROM. The package I used was the stock image and Odin tool all in one .exe, just plug in to download mode and run it and it flashed bootloader, recovery, system, kernel, etc. all back to stock.

Thanks thats what i did, I just basically had to use KIES to use the emergency recovery, then root my phone again. My question is what version of TWRP causes this? cause i used the newest version i could find off GOO. My other concerne is, will it accept or be safe to use a custom ROM? Well i gues ill find out  THANKS AGAIN!
Everyone with the sgh-i717 is having problems with the latest TWRP and the most stable version is 2.5.0.0. Go with that one or you'll be starting all over again I imagine. And don't just stop at the download link in the OP's, read the thread and find out what's going on. The problems with TWRP have been going on for a while and the development threads have a lot of comments about the latest build causing problems. Good luck! :good:

I might have bricked my phone - Please help me recover it!

Hello,
I think I made a big error when attempting to install the Hyperdrive rom. I rooted the phone with Odin, then installed Safestrap. Then I rebooted into recovery to install the rom. I did everything perfectly up to this point. But then I decided I was going to wipe the cache. Except I accidentally wiped EVERYTHING. So I cannot boot into the phone because presumably the OS is deleted. The phone just freezes on the "Samsung Galaxy S4" splash screen.
I made a single mistake and now I cannot use my phone.
I think I could probably use Odin to flash the original OS on the phone right? But I would need the file and instructions on how to do it.
I really need my phone on a regular basis so if any of you could tell me what my options are and help me to recover, I would appreciate it.
If I could restore to MI1, that would be the easiest because then I could simply flash the Hyperdrive rom like I was planning.
Thanks. I hope someone can help me.
If it boots up to a splash screen, I'm pretty sure you can hold vol down+power+home to boot into download mode and odin.

[Q] settings have stopped?

hi all its been a while since ive been on the boards because ive been running rooted stock deodexed rom. i havent flashed in a year or so but just recently my settings have stopped.
i continually have been getting this message instantly after ancelling out the message. i cannot get past the select language option. theres no escape.
I couldn't even backup my current rom. so i did a battery pull and rebooted into recovery to flash different roms. I've tried dn3 which was the last rom i had saved to my sd card, and miui7. both yielded the same results of the same message about the settings has stopped. its obvious something has went bad over time. i have done nothing but use it as a phone. no flashing or anything. is there something i need to flash in order to troubleshoot this issue? i do not have the money to obtain a replacement through assurion. also my recovery wouldnt let me restore my 1 backup on my sd card. so is there anything i can do from scratch? any settings zips to flash? Odin? ive searched boards and nothing specific to my device (I605). please help

I'm assuming you are still on the 4.1.2 bootloader, since you were able to flash miui7 and dn3.
If something has gotten corrupted, you could try Odin'ing the stock recovery back onto the device by following the directions on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53624921
After getting the stock recovery on the device, do a factory reset and wipe cache in the stock recovery. Then you can use ODIN to reinstall CWM/Philz or TWRP (whichever recovery you were using previously). Hopefully you have an old backup you could restore... or you can set up your ROM again from the start after rebooting back into the system.
If worse comes to worst and wiping in the Stock recovery doesn't fix things...sounds like you may have to Odin back to stock 4.1.2, and then reroot with CASUAL and start over again. Droidstyle put together a good guide on how to restore the phone back to stock 4.1.2... you can find his guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34891181. I think the 4.1.2 firmware link is down, but you can grab it from Sammobile.com.
You probably know... but don't flash the official Stock 4.3 or 4.4.2 Firmware onto the phone because there's no current bootloader unlock methods for those..... 4.1.2 is the last Android version for our I605's that has a "do it yourself" bootloader unlock method.
