We seem to be missing the required "Post your home screen" thread - so let me start it off !
Here's mine. I'm using HALauncher so that I can customize the home screen to my needs. I'm a big fan of HALauncher as it allows:
1 - Control over grouping and ordering. On the Shield default launcher, most-used apps go to the front of the line, so the order is always changing.
2 - Add sideloaded apps
3 - Add web page bookmarks
4 - Add wallpaper
5 - Add custom images for apps on launchers

I figured I'd get in on this. This is my SATV home screen. I am using Next 3D launcher and Go Weather EX for the weather widget as the SATV doesn't have the ability to use system widgets, but Next launcher can use widgets specifically built for it like task manager, music, weather, switch, and a few others.
do you need to be rooted to use a launcher, or it just that you click on the luancher icon and then it opens the new menu interface and thats it?
up
do yo uguys mouse and keyboard to navigate? isnt that annoying and takes away from using the remote etc
WHEN you use a luancher is it default... how do you set it to be default
My home screen is just stock. But I too would like to know how you got these launchers to work? And do you have to use keyboard mouse or no?

Start by looking up a few reviews on YouTube and you will see the potential, pretty much play games, watch movie, TV, play music, really just about anything with the proper setup

how do you benefit from a full android experience?
I am using the sideloader and it seems to work well.
Launchers maybe?
Happy Shield TV Setup
Very happy with my Shield TV setup now.
I gave the stock experience a go for a good week before getting fed up of the limitations of Android TV, despite loving the well polished user interface.
Now running full Android 5.1 (v2.2 of zulu99's build), rooted with TWRP recovery and Xposed framework installed.
With a variety of Android TV apps sideloaded from apkmirror.com, I'm now pretty close to having everything which I had before on stock:
Slick, remote-friendly launcher: HALauncher (with lovely background / wallpaper images)
SHIELD Remote as primary input / control device, 90% functional (physical buttons, volume control, audio output when heaphones connected all work, microphone doesn't work yet)
Remote-friendly TV versions of Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Emma for Spotify and SHIELD Hub / GeForce Now
Casting entire screen (or specific cast-enabled apps such as Netflix) from Android works and performs well enough to cast an entire movie
With all the numerous advantages of having full android, such as:
Multiple user accounts / profiles (my wife's Spotify plays no longer feed into my last.fm profile, thank god!)
Fully automated video downloading setup, thanks to Pushbullet, Advanced Download Manager and Tasker
Chrome web browser, for web browsing on your TV (finally!)
Casting screen from wife's Macbook Air and/or iPhone now works too, thanks to app "AirPlay Mirroring Receiver"
Thanks to all here who have helped get me to this stage! - primarily zulu99 for his full Android build, but everyone else who has helped by sharing tips/tricks to improve various bits of the experience.
The only thing left to get working as far as I'm concerned is the SHIELD Remote microphone.
This is a really frustrating one, as it's such a nice to have feature and really makes it feel like a futuristic device when you never need to type anything again - Google's voice recognition is outstanding.
I'm also at a bit of a loss as to what to investigate next with it; I've attempted to debug the remote from my PC but could only get it to create a single uni-directional A2DP channel for audio playback.
I guess I should start trying to dig through the kernel modules included in the stock system image.
Anyway, here's the top bit of my home screen:
and a few other screenshots showing the rest of the home screen, settings and the microphone issue.
How do you change the home launcher without changing away from stock.
Almost a real Android now!
@zulu99 Full Android 5.1 (v2.2 build), rooted with Nova Launcher. Still need to install Xposed framework and a few other bits, but getting close to having a real Android now!
Loving some of the setups you guys have! I'll have to get to work on setting mine up.

Hey,
how did you manage it to have the volume buttons of the Shield TV remote working?
I am also running zulus' Full Android and paired the remote with bluetooth but the volume buttons are not working...
Did you do anything special?
A working microphone would make it just perfect
Thanks!

I'm actually not entirely sure, the volume slider on the remote wasn't working for me initially either.
I had written it off as something that wasn't going to work, but then noticed it was working accidentally later on after I'd set up more apps.
I believe all I did between the time where it wasn't working and started working was:
Install a few apps made for Android TV (e.g. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HALauncher, Emma for Spotify)
Disconnect and reconnect the controller a few times
Restart the Shield TV (NSTV) a few times
If you give the above a try and the volume controls on your remote are still not working, post in my other thread about the remote and I'll try and narrow down what's making it work for me!

Thanks for your support.
I will test that during the weekend
Are the volume buttons for you only working inside HAlLauncher or also in the "normal" Android Launcher?
Has anyone had any success screen mirroring to either Chromecast or a Samsung smart TV? If so, are you rooted or stock? If rooted, what ROM?
When I try screen mirroring through my Samsung smart TV the video comes through, but the sound does not. When I try through Chromecast, it disconnects immediately when I try to connect.
So...no one can reply after all this time?

I would test, but my 3 year old, in the past week in a half, broke both my chrome cast (not waterproof) and my 55" Sammy (die-cast Lightning McQueen)... My panasonic and LG are both stupid TV's... Sorry I can't help... But I do feel better now that I've vented a little...
I have been able to cast to my Chromecast on both my Sony 46" and my 32" Emerson with no problems. I have an older Chromecast(purchased just 2 weeks before the new ones can't out). Will try mirroring to my Sony when I get home. I can also cast if the Chromecast is connected directly to our Skny home theater system.
I am able to Miracast to my Samsung Smart TV. It occasionally disconnects and has some noticeable delay but otherwise works fairly well. Haven't a Chromecast to test with though. I am rooted with the stock ROM for the record.
no issues here.. try this..
be sure phone is in portrait mode when you initiate screen mirroring. Once connected, than turn landscape. Regarding chromecast, once connected DO NOT use home button 2 escape, just hit back button a few times..

Does anyone know an app for putting the Shield to sleep after a set time?
I know I can use the TV's sleep timer - but I use the Shield remote exclusively and the only thing I go to the TV's remote is the stupid timer.

The shield TV will turn itself off after about an hour with no use. If you have CEC setup it should turn your TV off at the same time.

OK - good point. Does it do that if playing Plex/Netflix videos? (with autoplay enabled)

No in my experience it won't start the one hour counter till Netflix says "Are you still watching this title?" Then don't press anything and it will turn off in an hour.
I don't use Plex enough to know if it does the same.
Also if you have CEC on and go into the shield power menu and select sleep now, it will turn the shield off and then turn off your TV.
All of this of course assumes that your TV and HDMI cable support CEC for input changing and on/off of power.

yeah - I've got CEC on and that is what I am doing now (sleeping the shield from the power menu). I don't want to use the TV's remote at all and the only reason I keep it on my nightstand is to use the timer function.
I will test and see if it turns off with Plex autoplaying after 1hr, but ideally, it would be nice to have proper timer functionality built it.
Thanks

I can already tell, that built in Android TV sleep option is not reliable - it does not work in most apps while playing (especially not with the set time), generally it works well only while you're at the home screen.
For example, with Netflix playing something my SHIELD goes to sleep only after Netflix stops (either due to "are you still watching" dialog or show's end) and in Hulu app it does not work at all (I set it to 1 hour and when I wake up in the morning, Hulu is always still playing something unless it crashed or there was some network issue).
I was looking for an app that would force sleep after set time no matter what, but unfortunately I so far didn't find anything that would work with Android TV.

This would be a very useful app for all android TV users
Still looking for a solution for this.
Same here. Years later. Tried researching a IFTTT option but could not find one.
I realise this is an old thread but had anyone tried using tasker for this? Tasker somewhat works in android tv so perhaps that would work. I'm using taker to do kaeeo routines on my google box
I've tried both smart view (which I believe is only for Samsung smart TVs) and Google home app. I'm trying to cast to my Nvidia shield through the Google home app on the tablet. All I get is a blank screen on the tv. Seems like everything is connected. Home app sees the tv and I hit cast to it and the tablet shows that its casting but all I get on the tv is a blank screen. Anyone else having this issue??

I am able to cast via Smartview to my Sony smart TV, Chromecast and Microsoft wireless display adapter on my desktop Monitors. The casting is a little finnicky when my Smart TV is running an app, e.g. YouTube video, otherwise it works fine for me.
Have no luck to do the reverse casting to the tablet via Smartview though.
I'm having issues as well.
Can't cast from my Tab S6 to the Shield.
The screen goes black but nothing happens.
After a while "screen casting has ended" is shown on the tablet.
Casting from my S10 works just fine though.
No idea what's going on.
I am also unable to cast via the google Home app, just black screen then a message saying casting has stopped of something. I can still cast content from the tablet to the Shield such as video from a streaming app,
Connected
I too was having the same exact issue. All was working fine until recently. What I did was used my phone to connect to Shield via smartview. Once connected I opened smartview on the tablet and was able to connect. I only tried once, however I searched rebooted, etc... Still couldn't find a way until today. Good luck I see it's been awhile since last post.
Yep. Also cannot cast screen to my Sony TV - Neither with Smart View nor Google Home. This is either a problem exclusive to the Tablet, Android 9 or root.
My Galaxy S10 can cast to my TV without any issue, running Android 10 and NOT rooted.
What firmware ect is everyone running? I'm on Pie, SK1 and rooted.
Are you guys using a VPN? If so, try disabling it and try again.
Has anyone tried casting to a Roku tv or screen share to one? Just found out the p6 wont do it and I can't seem to find an app to do it.
Pixel doesn't support miracast for screen mirroring. You can cast from inside some individual apps (I think youtube, netflix,) and the Roku app will allow you to cast photos and music from inside the app.

Which video caster. I just installed a dozen or so of them and it will hit all my google devices but not the roku.
I used to use All Cast to mirror to Roku - there's a Roku app you install and send it using the all cast app. Originally made by Koush, the legend! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.cast I haven't used it in a while.

What are you attempting to cast?
I know for something like Plex, you have to have the Plex app installed on the TV and then your phone acts as the "remote" controlling it.
On my 3 blue line. I don't know how but on Android 12 pixel dust I was able to screen mirror to me Roku ultra. Now I'm on pixel dust 13 and nothing but a bootloop when I try. I wish I could figure out what made it work
You can cast from inside some individual apps (I think Speed Test youtube, netflix,) and the Roku app will allow you to cast photos and music from inside the app.
I've been using AllCast for a fair while, and it seems to stream to anything I come across.
Might work for you!

will allcast work if there is no internet connection or cell service?
I don't know for sure but I wouldn't think so.
Castify. Or if you have a Roku Ultra. Or any I assume that you can insert a Flash drive - USB drive into. Create a text file. Get the link to the video. Not the webpage so a .m3u8 .ts type link like
https://server15.pelispluscdn.info/newhls/da2d03aaa61c8a07197a4edda0b89733/EP.6.0.v0.1679315043.m3u8
You can just type the link and save it as any name .m3u such as TV.m3u. If you want to add multiple you can at least on mine. Or make it
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF-
https://server15.pelispluscdn.info/newhls/da2d03aaa61c8a07197a4edda0b89733/EP.6.0.v0.1679315043.m3u8
#EXTINF-
https://server15.pelispluscdn.info/newhls/da2d03aaa61c8a07197a4edda0b89733/EP.6.0.v0.1679315043.m3u8
either way works on mine as long as the USB drive is fast enough.
If course If you post a link to a website it's not going to work. The same link it sends with castify is the link you need.
You may need to insert the drive a couple times just hit the * button while at the screen that shows the drive and any DNA servers not the files inside. Turn on Search internet for thumbnails and request file type on start. Then select the USB drive and hit stay again. Make sure you search all media type and playlist mode is on. The m3u will show up as an audio playlist and you can select the link to play a stream.
I attached the same file I clicked on in the video I am attaching. Change the file extension to .m3u and give it a try. If your don't have USB support. Then I don't know how else besides Castify or Rcast. I am curious to know if this works for you tho. It loads slowly but this method will read a m3u playlist for tv as long as it's not a playlist that includes VOD and way to many channels. I took my playlist and edited out all the links for the TV streams and made each channel its own file so it loads the list quickly.
