The instructions for installing Cyanogenmod on the i777 specify using "fakeflash" to "temporarily" replace the stock recovery:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i777
The "temporary" recovery is then used to install the Cyanogenmod ROM.
My i777 currently has Cooked 1.2 w/ the AJK 4.9 noswap kernel. When I look into the Cyanogenmod 7.1 (old, I know, bear with me), or 10.2 zips, I cannot find a zImage inside. And, I don't see one being put in place by update-script. I the Cooked 1.2 zip, I find zImage, and it is installed by update-script.
So, if I go ahead with the "fakeflash", or use the custom recovery I currently have in place (AJK 4.9), will I be left with a Cyanogenmod 7.1 (or 10.2) and an incompatible kernel left in place (AJK 4.9 NoSwap, not AJK 4.9 AOSP for CM)?
From what I lay out above, it seems clear to me that Cyanogenmod zips do not include a kernel for the i777, but I find it strange that I don't see anybody else mentioning it.
I don't do AOSP roms... but I can't imagine a firmware distribution without a kernel. The kernel file can be either zImage or boot.bin. If I'm not mistaken, AJK is a boot.bin type kernel.
Are there any other kernels that will work with stock ROM 4.1.2 other than AJK and jeboo? I am having issues with those kernels.

I've always used which ever Kernel come shipped with the ROM, until FroydVillain 1.5.0 gave the option to download the kernel separately.
I have since learnt that you can pretty much choose any kernel with any ROM as long at its compatible.
What are the rules for this?
How do you know which kernel you can use with which ROM?
Noob alert!
From what I heard is that CyanogenMod is one of the best ROMs, that was why I was thinking on installing it.
It is also based on the AOSP which makes the code cleaner with less bloatware I guess.
The problem is that I checked the nightly build known issues FAQ and there is no TV out or encryption, nor BLN, which are all very cool features to me.
1) Can you guys recommend me any other ROMs to look into? (that is CF-root CWM friendly)
2) What other advantages are there to the ROM being forked from AOSP?
3) I have recently used CF-root and have kernel [email protected] #2
Is there any problem in using kTool to flash to a 3.x kernel? Do I need to do anything first?
Thank you for the help.
Is there a matrix of compatible baseband/kernel/ROM configurations? I tried using sirkay's boot_9.587c - ICS - xKernel v9.587-C, flykernel0_6, and flykernel0_8, but they all caused reboot cycle (bootloop) with CM9.1 FXP 142.
I had to extract boot.img out of the FXP zip file and flash that kernel to successfully load up CM 9.1. Incidentally that kernel version is 2.6.32.9-FXP. FWIW, I was upgrading from CM7.2 RC1, updated baseband from D-64 to G-77 before flashing kernel and then CM 9.1.
Ideally I want to use the fastest kernel out there compatible with CM9.1, and one with Linaro would be ideal. Any suggestions?
Am I missing something, there's a whole topic specifically for questions ... [HELP] Q&A Thread - MUST POST ALL QUESTIONS HERE [ 1 2 3 ... Last ]
...I'm new here but it seems some people either can't read or just cba.
Yes there is Q&A thread!
Anyway for CM based ROMs you have to use CM kernel otherwise you got bootloop... i've heard AOSP/AOKP is compatible but i never tried it myself
I want to inlclude latest Siyah Kernel incl. CrtOff and 3Way EPM into OmegaRom v37.
I extracted both Roms and copied/overwrote boot.img and flash_image in Omega /indie/ with the Siyah ones. Then I compressed the files again, put them on my exSDCard and flashed the image.
It seems to work. Did I forgot something to change/include?
What's the question?
The question is in the third line of the first post. You should add "Hit me if I deserve it in your sig."
As you are hacking Indies rom why not ask him .
It also looks like you have used and posted a devs work without any indication or probable authority from the dev .

If you want to install the latest X-kernel (or whatever mod) in Omega the best thing to do would be to install the ROM and then come to our forum. All compatable kernels and mods are avalable in the Omega files kitchen app that comes installed without all this fuss.Hit my sig below and come to the forum.
I'm trying to install AJK Kernel 4.9 AOSP on Hellybean 4.3 and also tried on Carbon Rom 4.3. I use a kernel cleaning script, flash the kernel, reboot recovery, reset stweaks profiles, and have tried fix permissions also. Each time the phone starts up on reboot i get fc's on phone.android.com and others. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? I have read where others have installed this kernel on these roms with out any trouble. BTW, the AJK thread is closed so I posted here.
Thanks
Probably because those roms are based after the "ramdisk" update issue. Basically, most (if not all) AOSP-based roms after a specific update (can't remember the exact date or month, think it's October, though) no longer allow the use of custom kernels unless they feature an updated ramdisk.
AJK doesn't have this yet, but AJ is working on 5.0 - that will solve the problem.
