Questions about Whatsapp backup/restore - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, usually when you're going to format/change another roms for your phone,
how did you backup your whatsapp chat/pictures/videos ?
(Not to mention the newer version of whatsapp that can upload to GD)
Because usually what I do is connect phone to PC and copy the entire Whatsapp file to PC, once I done format, copy it back to phone and install back Whatsapp and restore.
But I notice that some pictures might be gone or replace by other pictures twice or above.. but the chat history is ok
Any solution to fix? or this is normal situation?

You will be hard pressed to get a good answer. Most here have stopped using whatsapp almost a year ago and have moved on to more secure options.
Well most users in the states. I know it is popular in other countries. Like India. Maybe one of those members will have an idea.

Yeah it's true, btw thanks for reply

Any idea guys?

Any helps?

U should install titaniyum backup. apk from plystore and backup all apk with data.or u can back up only data when u installed a new rom or new version of whatsapp.
Try it dear

Just move whatsapp folder from your internal storage to sd card and then after flashing move it back to internal.
Or use titanium backup.

Say I have formatted my phone, then do I move the whole WA folder to the internal storage after reinstalling WA or before that?

They download and install to the phone. If what you're asking is where does the original apk go you can find it in data/app

You don't.
there is a forum on devlopment thread appto sd which might be of some help in case you wanna move ur contacts to sd card, personally i havent tried it coz i never used so many apps, but please refer it in case you want to move ur apps..
The apps all collect together in a little room inside your phone, which is full of thousands of the little green android guys, and the each take a little piece of the app, and then when you touch the screen, or press one of the buttons, they all run around with little torches shining them in the right spots to make what you see on the screen.
If you get a microscope, you can actually see them doing it.
But you've got to be really quiet, cos they're very timid, and they'll try to hide from you.

What you really meant to say was...."I was messing with my phone and screwed up" ;-)
I think its safe to say kiss that stuff goodbye.
You want the USB mod wherever that is otherwise no chance .

Mass storage mod only works for external Sd.
You could use ext4 restore utilities on the phone, but so far I've not had a single positive experience when trying to restore ext3/ext4 contents.
Sorry to say, but your data is probably gone.
good luck, but i dont think your gonna see it again.
Try hexamob recovery.u might be lucky
That is exactly why all my phone stuff is always backed up on my computer and on my NAS...
Samsung hasn't included Dropbox to sit idly.
I recommend the following:
Titanium Backup to external Sd and Dropbox
Dropsync to sync your files during the night
Sms Backup+ to have a copy of Sms/Call log on Gmail
Sync contacts to Google
Of course a local Nas is better if you don't have a flatrate or a slow internet connection.
However then you'll add a further device where stuff can potentially go wrong.
I prefer offsite. At least when your house burns down and you loose everything you know that your party pictures noone cares about (including you) are safely stored away.

I'm sorry to say but the only way to get them back is to try restore them from your sd card.
In the db file and backup conversation there are only small thumbs from your pics.

[Q] Low on memory

For the second time in just a few months I have a notice: "storage space running out of memore".
I have just 99 MB free.
I've deleted even apps that I want but can't seem to find what is using up all the memory.
Internal memory fine, SD fine.
I've moved what ever I can to SD.
My phone: GT -I9100
Android 4.1.2 "up to date"
I really don't want to do a factory reset again and again every few months.
Loking for advice and help.
Thanks,

If your s2 is rooted download link2sd from the play store then you can move unmoveable apps like facebook to your sd card and also then you can delete bloated apps aswel.

I am not rooted.
When you say delete cache, do you mean individually in each program or is there a way to do a major cache delete somewhere else.
Thanks

search on google play, there is a raft of apps that can help you clean your cache.
Hope this helps
My mate have had this problem. Like 7 apps installed, but no memory left. It just sort of happens. I have not been able to pinpoint the cause of the problem.

Go into your dialer and key in *#9900# and in the menu that comes up select "Delete dumpstate/logcat". This will free up a lot of unnecessary log files.

Freed up more than 1GB.
I guess this needs to be done periodically.
Great help.

Also go to Settings and check under the storage part what is taken up space, in my SII it was a lot of garbage under DCIM, the photos are stored on the SD card but "small copies" (do not recall what they are called) filled up nearly a GB on my unit. I have a lot of photos on Dropbox etc that are shown on the SII.

I would guess so, yes. But not too often. How long have you had your phone? (rhetorical question)

"Thumbnails", and it's a good idea to delete these now and again. They'll be rebuilt as needed.

I've had my phone I think 3 years. SG II was their newest phone at the time.
I never had this problem till maybe a year ago and not this week.
Thanks again for the "delete" it really seems to have solved the problem.
Last time I couldn't find anyone who could help and went the complete factory reset route.
This is obviously so much better.

It really was a rhetorical question. I didn't want to know how long you've had your phone. I was pointing out that those logs have built up over that time, 3 years, so it's unlikely that they'll build up to that degree for another 3 years. So you don't need to apply this fix often, maybe once a year or so.
A lot of people are suffering a lack of space on their Samsung phones needlessly, as I did for at least 6 months, through not knowing about this fix. If you find someone else in the same situation, maybe you can help them out.

[Help] Deleted files not ending up as free space, storage/software issue

TLDR: storage issue when using 3rd party file managers, deleted files do not return to free space, ends up as 'system data' when i checked with diskusage on the appstore. Didn't matter if it was on internal or sd card. Tried to factory reset multiple times still same issue. Anyone else? ><"
Here's the email i shot to LG, still no reply from them, im getting more and more upset with LG each day, even HTC, ****ty Samsung when i had my s3 and Sony Ericsson back in the day responded in a week.
"I visited the service center about 2 weeks back, 19 April, about the storage issue i was facing when using the internal and 3rd party file managers when deleting files where the space taken up by files would be relegated to "system data" instead of free space upon deletion, and i would only get back the free space sometimes when i restart the phone. I have had it factory reset and tested with the staff, who said that the software team would get back to me regarding this as it seems to be an isolated case right after the product launch when i bought it on 16 April. I have not gotten a reply regarding this issue and i would like it solved ASAP, may i know if this is a software issue or hardware issue and what the software team has been able to find out so far? This issue is still present and i am able to isolate this issue mostly to the use of 3rd party file manager/explorers on the Google Play Store. "
Any kind soul can help and try to replicate this issue?
Isn't this a feature of the G5? When you delete apps, they stay for 24 hours and can be reinstalled via the "Uninstalled Apps" icon. The icon only seems to show when I use the default homescreen. So after you delete something, check there and delete it again and it should free the space.

Nono, as in any other file besides apps, i know about that feature. Lets say i delete 5Gb of music, i dont get back that 5 Gb, ends up under system data.
Hmm. Deleted some files with solid explorer and it freed the space for me. Are you rooted? What 3rd party file manager do you use?

Hmmm i tried the asus file manager, explorer by speedsoftware and es file explorer. I am really really fed up with the internal file manager. Im in Singapore, Model H860 and not rooted(no bootloader unlock available anyways lol). Im thinking it might be just an isolated case for me, but i'll take a look at solid explorer now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c1KCCVIvsY i have recorded the issue i was talking about. Hope this helps to explain the situation.
Hi
Have you find out the reason for this yet?

Hello, i received notification that LG headquarters have been able to successfully replicate the issue on their end and are *supposedly working on it*, from what i understand it seems to be an underlying issue in terms of their framework coding.
Bloody hell guess this is what i get for being early adopter and having the luck to be an unrecognised beta tester to solve an issue they didnt already fix with a phone that just so happens to have this issue.

Just a thought - it's an official LG tool that supposedly takes care of your problem (freeing up space) and I wonder if it also reports (or even notices) the acculmulation of those files. It's logs (if it has any that can be accessed) would point to the problem maybe. I believe you have done everything - I just wonder how LG is diagnosing it.

None other than restarting
I've found that there is a recycle bin of sorts like windows within the file structure. Sometimes mine won't free up the space until that folder is emptied.
The folder is estrongs, has the recycle folder inside.

How to delete pictures/videos and free space - the hard way
My LG v20 maxed out in storage. I deleted tons of videos and pictures, but it did not free up the space. I called ATT support, but they could not help. So I plugged my phone into my Windows 10 computer and used windows explorerr to look in every folder until I could find the 20-30GB of files that should not have been there. And I found them here!
This PC\V20\Internal storage\Android\data\com.android.gallery3d\files\.trashcan
It turns out that deleting images was just moving them in to this trashcan. I deleted the various folders in here and I got all my space back. Solved (for me at least).

I deleted a LOT of images and videos, but it doesn't seem to free space and, of course, I'm running out of free space in the LG G5
