Searching high and low, I FINALLY found one!
A while back I posted HERE looking for an Alarm Clock app or modification that permits leaving the screen off while alarms are sounding. I am a heavy sleeper and all the other alarm clock apps I tried automatically wake the phone screen whenever an alarm is playing. This was putting enormous strain on my (non-replaceable HTC One M8) battery, reducing its calendar life by draining 20-40% of the power before I regain consciousness every morning.
So far out of about 10-12 clock apps I have tried, this is the only one I have found that will play an alarm and leave the screen off (or dimmed if you like):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.tanyu.SmartAlarmFree
It also has many other great features like launching an app on alarm trigger, gentle (ascending) song/ringtone/alarm volume, use music files as alarms and more!
THANKS TO THE DEVELOPER OF THIS!!!!!!

I am getting frustrated with this as I have been late two times last two weeks because the alarm clock has not activated.
The phone is on (witch is stupid, should be able to wake up and ring as every old phone is capable of doing) but it is on, the alarm sound is adjusted to the highest level and still sometimes for no reason it does not ring! The alarm is still active (one time alarm) when I wake up 1-2h later so nothing has happened, it just skipped to ring.
Is there a remedy for this because it is a MAJOR problem. I don't want to have to buy a alarm clock for that job, it is a smartphone for crying out loud and my stupid 10 year old nokia does this without any problems 100% reliable...
When you use app such as taskkiller and kill clock process then alarm will not ring. Before going sleep restart your phone and dont touch taskkiller. Or add clock to ignored list.
go to clock settings>alarms and click on one alarm which you want...let's say first one..you will see numbers, description, alarm sound...etc
click alarm sound and instead of clicking a tone, just click the side button (volume) and you will seethe green bar as if you were changing your ringer volume...just set it to desired level
and note that this has nothing to do with phone being in vibrate or silent mode..it will ring regardless
i had the same issue until i figured out how to deal with it
and trust me...the phone itself ad the alarm are reliable
I agree with both of these answers.
I had exactly the same problem before i added the clock to the ignore list. It will still show the alarm as activated, but it will not ring.
Do both and you should be fine.
shutting down third party apps with a task manager is one thing , but leave the pre-installed android apps alone. they're running for a reason, dammit
Thanks guys you were right the taskkiller did kill the alarm, it appeared still to be active in the settings and icon in the notification bar (that confused me) but the alarm did not go off. Added it to the whitelist and tested a couple of times - worked fine!
Why does it not work when turned off? The clock keeps the time while the phone is off, so it seems natural that the alarm would also work - maybe a 2.1 update? Older phones would power up for the alarm..
Thanks again!
it's just not something that works on HTCs. They're designed to be on all the time.
i use advanced task killer free and everything works..no problem with such things...
i switched to ATK because taskiller seemed to consume too much memory
i tried ATK while taskiler was on and i had ...25-30 mb less memory then i uninstalled taskiller and got those back....
strange...how can a utility consume so much ram

show me a single smartphone that does this...
you are confusing cellphones and smartphones here. smartphones are designed to be on all the time, that is why they invented the airplane mode.
take it easy please,be friendly and try not to sound rude
thanks
I am looking for a bedside clock app, and yes I know there are many, here is the catch. I want one that dims really low like Better alarm but also has all moving parts aka the clock bounces or moves and there are no parts at all that will cause possible screen burn. Would also be icing if it could enable itself when plugged in.
Does such an app exist?
Gentle Alarm has a really nice bedside clock that dims perfectly. Also it has an option to change the clocks position to reduce any screen burn. Oh and you can set different profiles. Works great!

Try alarm clock plus.
You can set the clock to move around every minute when it is dimmed
Klaxon, the full version supports clockwork. Very nice dim. Black screen with dark green font. Still visible in dark room but doesn't light up the room, also has weather. Looks just like the stock android clock that our phones don't come with.

I use Lightning Bug for white noise and has a nice bedside clock.
+1 for Gentle Alarm, especially if you're also looking for an excellent alarm clock. Btw, I use Tasker to automatically launch GA when I plug in the power. You can customize by time, or in my case, when I plug in the power, I get a popup menu giving me the choice of several "modes," including a night mode which launches GA, turns off connections, and adjusts the volume.

I use bedside. It dims perfectly, has tons of options. I haven't found an option to move the clock around, but I've been using it for months with no burn in.
Night clock from Doug Ricket is the best alarm clock I have used since I got my G1 on day one. It is not in the market any more, just google it. It uses my mp3 files as the alarm, randomly, adjust brightness, color, snooze time...lots of settings

Another vote for Bedside, even though it doesn't move the display. It is real dim and has a sleep mode that blanks the display until it is touched/moved. Very sensitive - I usually just tap the bedside table lightly and it wakes the display. Perfect way to keep it dark but still have the time on hand.
Hi,
I have looked for this but can't find it.
Does anyone know or is already working on a Sunshine Alarm App?
Like a standard alarm app but 10 or 15mins before wake up time the phone's LED comes on at a low level up to full brightness when the alarm notification sounds.
Thanks,
D
AFAIK, the phones Notification LED has only one brightness. Anyway, Gentle Alarm is somewhat close to what you are requesting, you can check it out:

Hello,
I am running a gTab with TNT Lite 4.4 and Launcher Pro. I like the setup very much (thanks to all the help found here), but am having problems trying to find an alarm clock app I can set up the way I like.
Ideally, I want an alarm that will open Pandora at a specified time. Barring that, I'd be happy with an app that started the alarm from sleep mode. I don't like leaving the display on all night, even if it's in the "dim" or "night mode". However, it seems that the minute I put the gTab to sleep, the clock stops ticking and the alarm doesn't go off until you wake up the device (the wake updates the clock to the actual time).
Am I nuts, or is there some kind of bug? Are there alarms that will wake up the tablet from sleep? So far I've tried "Alarm Clock Plus" and "AppAlarm Pro" without success.

This is a bug without doubt - what is the point of an alarm that
you have to turn on
YOu might try some of those keepalive programs in the market, but
my experience is that, like most android apps (and android itself
for that matter), they don't really work perfectly.
Here's what I've come up with so far. It seems to be working, although with some caveats.
I installed "Load Monitor" and enabled what they call "Wake Lock" which, according to the FAQ, prevents the tablet from going into a deep sleep. It seems to allow the clock to keep accurate time while screen is off. It also might help people's WiFi issues. I don't know the effect on battery life, but plugging it in while it's on the nightstand isn't a problem.
I've found that Pandora needs to be closed, not paused. Sometimes it'll work when paused, but not always.
I would be happy to hear anyone else suggestions as I'm certainly disappointed in how this is working.
EDIT: Also, you need to have the volume turned up loud enough manually. If you let the app set the volume, it's never loud enough.
App alarm pro is what I use on my phone. It can restart the app if you were using the night before. I use it to wake to Howard on the Sirius XM app and the developer is friendly and responsive. I haven't tried it on the gtab yet as my night stand isn't that big!
This is strange but Better Battery stats says that AlarmClock (com.android.deskclock.Clock) has kept my phone in wakelock for 50 minutes. I went to sleep with 100 percent batt and I'm quite sure my Alarm did not ring for 50 straight minutes... My battery is now at 82 percent after 6 hours.
Battery Use in Gingerbread also shows that my phone was awake for most of the time since the alarm went off. Should I use another alarm clock app? I am using the default alarm clock app in mik's CM 6.5.8.
The alarm clock does that even on stock Gingerbread. You should freeze/uninstall Clock and use Alarm Clock Plus on Market, it is much better.
