Unreachable S6 edge in LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) mode - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I have bought a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge on the 17th of April. The default network mode is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), it's perfect at most places, however at home (at a village) my phone is unreachable, I can use 4G/LTE for browsing the internet, I can send SMSes and call people (after a long time before calling), but my phone is unreachable. If I change the mode to GSM (without auto connect), it works perfectly.
As I said, my phone works perfectly at most places (for example at a bigger town), but doesn't work at home.
My phone has already been replaced by my carrier (T-mobile), but that's still not okay.
Any suggestions?
Edit: I have realised that the problem can be that I don't have enough signal strength when using LTE to use it for calls, but my phone still connects the LTE network when it's set to auto connect.

Go to the EE coverage map and check what you should be getting
http://ee.co.uk/ee-and-me/network/4gee/coverage-checker
i found there is a black spot in my back garden works in the rest of the house so work a look lol

My problem isn't that I don't have LTE at home, but that I can't use it for calls without changing the network mode manually.

Next stop ring supporr and ask if an issue, last week my call receiving was very intermittant and it turned out the 2 local towers were being upgraded for a better 4g signal

My last phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5 still works perfectly with LTE at the same places where the S6 edge doesn't.

Sorry beyond me may be some one else had some clues

The LTE on the Galaxy S6 Edge is weak and so is the wifi. I bought mine unlocked from Hong Kong. Tried 4G LTE in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. All three places have 4G LTE issues and all three places have weak and slow wifi problems. Samsung tried to use their own Broadcom chip I take it...

The real problem is that the Edge isn't optimised for Chinese LTE... the same issue is happening with my S6 Edge in Australia.

I stay in Saudi Arabia and I am facing same problem. Same solution was turning to GSM only mode.
Is it a common problem ? 1 day old device and problem on its first day why ?

Hi seelrd ,
i'm from France , i bought the S6 egde gold version , my carrier is Orange the best network here in France
i have the same bad issue , i'm unreachable on all incoming calls , i catch 4G/4G+ and i only have 1 little poor bar network ,
i think i will send back my S6 edge to my carrier , for this price , everthing should work perfectly ,
as i can compare with my wife's iphone6 , same place , same house , same town , and she don't have any single bug ....
my question is , Can SAMSUNG bring a fix to clear this issue ?? or it is only a bad Carrier issue , and the Carrier need to fix this ??
Please need Help ^^

Its such a shame that this problem exists as it is a beatiful phone and the camera is stunning. Its just what I wanted.
What I didn't want however is sub par cell reception which after four days now I can confirm is a real issue. I started another thread where I've made come comparisons. read more here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/help/reports-dropped-calls-poor-reception-t3091992
Sadly this phone is going to have to go back. I'm hoping The LG G4 will fill the boots when its unveiled on Tuesday.

I have the same issue - based in the UK on Vodafone. This isn't a carrier issue as switching the same SIM into my old SGS4 gives a full signal when on LTE/WCDMA.
The only solution is to manually set to GSM only mode when on wifi for good signal strength and call quality.
And back to LTE when away from wifi when data speed is important at the expense of signal/call quality. I hope this can be fixed via OTA update.

that is sadly true. same thing happening in Saudi Arabia, unreachable when on auto mode while my LG G3 never had a single issue.
I hope that it is not a hardware-related issue

My response from HTC about poor radio reception

I asked HTC if/when they were going to release the updated ROM for Europe with the improved radio ROM, this is the response I got:
We are very surprised to hear you are having problems with your device. I would first recommend performing a simwipe as this will do a soft-reset at the same time. This will clear any static from your Sim card. - Turn phone off - Take battery out - Remove Sim Card - Clean gold contacts on sim card (this will clear any static) - Replace sim card then battery - Turn phone back on You could try a soft-reset by pressing in the soft-reset button using your stylus. This will reboot your device much like a PC. This will normally cure any software problems and speed your device up. Please note that performing the below instructions will remove all of your data on your device. Please backup any data first. Another option would be to try a hard-reset to set it back to factory settings. In order to do this: - Backup your data first - Turn memory card encryption off - Start - Settings - System Tab - Clear Storage - Enter 1234 and press OK - Your device will now revert back to factory settings. Is it working now? Please let us know how you get on.

Very helpful I don't think. How will cleaning my SIM card possibly help?
LOL. Geniuses! According to the upcoming rate of new device models with very little changes and the repeatedly criticized support it seems like HTC is too blinded by the evolution mania that haunts all the companies suffering from the downside of economy - impayable rivalry.
As we are living in postmodernist times it is still important to remind the principle of the monster called modernism - FORM prior to ESSENCE.
Sounds like an automated response to me. Many people email companies regarding products and they really expect an expert reply but all they usually get is an automated response, based on the content of the email and maybe the email header.
It is a shame but honestly, if you want to ask a company something about a product, you usually need to have a contact in the upper hierarchy, otherwise you get what you get...an automated response and/or a non-qualified response.
Another thing is: what do you expect? There are only two possibilities regarding the poor signal reception of the HTC Diamond 2: HTC issues a new and improved radio firmware which corrects the problem OR if it is a hardware problem, don't expect much.
Some cell phone manufacturers are sometimes also very very clever (they think): they raise just the bar signal strength indicator without any real reception improvements.
It is usually a bad sign if the signal reception is crappy from the start, so don't expect much difference from a radio firmware update.
The only company I know of so far who actually improved radio reception was RIM with their BlackBerry Storm. I don't know how they did it, apparently the antenna design was OK and everything but maybe the energy saving setup kicked in too much at the beginning, who knows. Anyways: a firmware update improved things substantially and I've never seen a similar improvement on a device from another company out there.
Apple's iPhone 3G is maybe a good example: Apple raised the signal bar display but signal reception stayed the same, HSDPA connections were just a bit more stable but no real reception improvement. Good trick to fool customers.

I disagree, there are often significant performance differences between the Radio ROMs on these HTC devices. With my Kaiser I found an update resolved similar poor performance problems. I'm not asking for full on top quality reception but I would at least hope to get a basic phone signal in my house in the same places I could with my Kaiser. That's not too much to ask is it? Couldnt care less if I get 3G coverage at home (I have Wifi)

I can confirm the same for my old Cruise. Radio ROM's made great differences!
I'd love to know when this is coming out too...
My radio quality is very good in Holland with the stock radio. No need for an upgrade.
It is just generally poor for me. For instance now in my office where I would normally get full bars on my Kaiser, I have just two

So are there any other UK T-Mobile users with poor reception? Or with good reception? Or with ány reception?
It is not the T-Mobile network, in the locations where I get no signal in my TD2, the same SIM can get good reception in a Nokia
Reception
Mine is from Germany and i must say that my Elf had a higher number of reception bars than TD2 in some areas, but so far no reception problems. So maybe it's just the number of bars and not the actual reception, like many said before.
I can confirm it's not terribly sensitive. I previously had my t-mobile sim in a USB datastick, and the reception was better on my train journey to work. Now it drops connection a bit more frequently with the TD2, but it's not too bad.
I suspect the signal strength bars read lower than they should too. And, reception is erratic in that you get good recetion one day and poor the next, in the same location. This is hopefully firmware fixable.
One of the problems with the TD2 is the placement of the GSM/3G aerials at the bottom of the case, where you normally hold the phone. You have to make a conscious effort to hold it by the top for best signal. Except when you use Google maps with GPS. Then you hold it by the middle

He's not blaming T-Mobile for poor coverage, but rather seeing if the problem is worse on different networks, which may prove the phone radio is worse on certain frequency bands, or similar things which differ by network.
Also, same problem here on T-mobile (and 3) - Regularly dropping off the network at my house.
I'll add to this, coming off M40 at junction 3 call drops in 3g mode every time, fine in GSM. This hasn't happened on any phone i've owned since the awful NEC phones when 3 launched. It's definately the phone. I'm on Three BTW.

[Q] GALAXY S3 Signal problem ( Three network )

It seems my samsung galaxy s3 works only on HDSPA+,
when it switches from hdpsa+ to normal network it shows 2-3 BARS and Emergency Calls only...
This is happening since the first day I received the phone.
So basicly I do not have any reception inhouse, only outside ( and still depends.. )
The cell service is draining the battery life heavily and stats are ( 70% without service )
Also when I have no coverage and I try to select Three network manualy i get this message:

Oh yeah forgot to mention, same microsim (if properly aligned) works great on HTC HD2
Was in three store, (the girl that works there) saw I have no reception even in their store. Told everything is okay in their side, send it to samsung..
Just got the phone back, it appears they just reset the firmware, STILL GOT THE SAME PROBLEM !!!
gotta send it again ...
There is definitely a signal issue with the S3 but Samsung is not admitting it because of (consequence) . I started using a S3 two weeks ago and now so regret with my decision. It will be great If every one post their problem in their Facebook, tweeter etc let the friends and public know about it, and this way should teach Samsung how to handle problem ....
I had the same sort of signal issues using a Vodafone sim. Tried 2 handsets but ended up returning both and getting a motorola razr maxx, which gives excellent signal and of course battery life

Do you think? This thread was started on the 27th of last month and your the only person to report having a similar problem, lets not get carried away might just be a few defective units. If your phone is still faulty after you had the software reflashed demand a replacement, maybe the 3 shop will compare your phone to a demo phone in store to confirm yours isn't working as it should.
You may need to get your problem escalated to the ceo's office, you do this by emailing them. You can find their email & phone number on line. Good luck and keep us informed
I am also having this problem, so it's my wife. We've had three s3's between us and all have been the same. If you do a search you will find there are other threads with exactly the same problem we are having.
There is definitely a problem :-(
I had the same problem on Three inside the house (although it wasn't the phone as with the sim in my old S1 it was the same signal issue). The three support people have now supplied a home signal booster that uses my home broadband as a local cell tower and no more problems at home since.
The problem for me was that it's an old house with thick brick walls that block the 3G frequency band and since three have no 2G coverage you lose signal completely.
Try disable "fast dormancy".gorkhan made an app that's available on market. U need to be rooted to disable it. This will improve battery and signal if your carrier doesn't support fast dormancy. A lot say they do, but reality is they don't.
Try and see if it helps

Try to observe if it occurs again. My s3 had been set to "GSM only" since day 1 but, problem is still there. There is definitely a problem since my wife have another phone (Nokia) with the same operator as what's in my S3, mine got "emergency calls only" while hers is just fine. The most irritating part is that this does not occur all the time so, you can't recreate the problem and always caught me by surprise. You will just realize when people contacting you will complain later on.
Modem thread check other users with good reception on your network .
Flash same modem.
Their is a significant difference in modems for some.

I have just received mine today and it is the international version and I have the same problem. On GSM Only it works fine, but when I put it into WCDMA/ GSM Auto and it goes into WCDMA I cannot make calls, says not registered on the network. If I use WCDMA only I cannot make calls either.
Who needs a 3G phone that can be used in 2G mode only? And in 21st century?
Yup, there seems to be a network problem!
I just bought my S3 with Vodafone (Australia) and there does seem to be a problem with signal strength. Its almost non-existent in my house and I have to get out in order to talk on the phone. Quite bummed about it! Went to Vodafone, did a sim swap, did not help. Went to Samsung, they said they'll need to take it away for a couple of weeks for 'checks' (WTF?)
Another website says that Samsung apparently admits these problems and suggests to do a factory reset.
My problem was caused by a bad SIM.

Cannot get a 3G connection on my unlocked 920

I unlocked my 920 from EE & I am using it on Vodafone but I cannot get a 3G connection. It stays on EDGE all the time & that connection is fine as far as data just no 3G.
Input the APN settings from the Vodafone website & that was no help.
Contacted Vodafone CS but they could not help me.
So anyone have any suggestions?

also make sure 3G band is set to automatic instead of band 2 or something like that, I had a bad experience seeing my phone not getting any signal at all after mistakenly put the 3G on band 2 only and no network could get connected.

That won't fix the OP's issue. The OP gets data on EDGE, just not 3G.
I eventually took it to an area with a very strong 3G signal and it went onto 3G. But it's still very choppy and I have an issue that if it drops off 3G it can be hard to get it to go back onto it unless I take it to a max strength signal area.

That could be or your operator or the firmware.
The operators can control the amount of cell phones handing off from 2G to 3G, also the network does the same if the 3G is very congested.
Also the firmware may take a heavy part on this if the operator has some special configuration on its handset to go easily on 3G camping.

It did a network settings update recently, maybe because my network is starting to carry it, but that doesn't seem to have helped all that much.

it does not just happen to phones on other networks, I have a lumia on the EE network and I don't get full 3g always, its always switching between EDGE and 3G although the signal is supposed to be strong, called into customer support and they told me it was due to network congestion.. :|

I had a similar problem and I solved it by forcing 3G only... this happens when the 2g or E signal is very strong while 3G is weak:
dial the following: ##3282#
it will open a menu for you, go to the bottom where settings are and choose settings, under settings there is something called "network type" choose 3G from there and you should see it.
this will tell you if it is a carrier issue or a phone issue. I don't recommend always having it that way as it will drain your battery when signal is low and drop calls instead of switching to 2G during calls.

Saleh

Is your 3G signal as stable as your previous phone?

Hello Members
I'm on the '3' network (uk), and I'm sure the 3G signal while using my new XZU is not as stable.
The signal keeps jumping from 3G to H to H+, which my previous phone didn't do at my home address.
Is it possible that the Sony XZU needs more firmware updates, or is the phone just suffering signal strength issues?
Regards

Hello BASKOU, it's my 3G signal. I find I'll have reasonable high signal bars on the XZU but the mobile 3G icon will constantly change from 3G to H to H+, and this action seems to interrupt the speed/flow of how Web pages load, or how the 'Play store works'.
The only thing I find it's not 100% consistently doing this problem, depending on where I am, or the time of day, but what I do find is it will generally always start with a 3G symbol if I'm not using the Internet first off on the phone, then the arrows will flash and the icon will move on to H the H+.
It's as if 3' network is monitoring what process you doing at the time your using the network, and controlling the mode of speed that is required (a 3G speed, or a H+ speed), I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the LTE roll out on 3's network?
Regards

Ok so try to lock on WCDMA and see if you still have this problem. It happen to me at my home (have an antenna just up to me so it mess with the network). But when I am in town or normal covered area it never switch all the time like you.
The network do not tell your phone which network he should use. It is your phone that choice which network it should use. And corresponding to the speed it say if you are on 3g/H/H+. So normally it is because 3G signal is not stable that your phone do that. As my XZU have a better signal than my htc sensation and the note 2, I guess it might come from the network.

The phone swith to 3g to conserve battery life, when you start using Internet , it switch to fastest network available, that's the delay that you experience, i think that normal for all phones.
So far, the signal is better compare to my iphone 5 in weak signal area.

Thanks BASKOU, I'll lock to WCDMA only tonight, while I'm my home address signal area which seems to suffer this problem the most at the moment.
Thanks ijat91 also for that, I also had the Note2 (GT-N7105) previously, but I never noticed, or picked up on the phone displaying the 3G icon first off before going to H+, it tended to always be showing H+ and this was at my home address.
But at you've stated bASKOU, I think the phones hunting for the strongest signal, now you've mentioned this, I've heard other friends and people I know have suffered issues like this on there different makes, and model phones, using there mobile networks.
I'll report back if making this change in the settings improves things.
Regards
Well, I did the settings change as suggested to 'WCDMA only', the result was no improvement in fact the Internet symbol on the phone just stayed on 3G, and the signal bars would just flip between 2 & 4 and then none, thanks anyway.
I'm almost sure it's not a physical fault with the phone, as yesterday I was virtually on H+ signal while in an area of London call Kilburn, so I don't think there's a problem there.
It might possibly be related to the phone firmware, in that in some way it's not handling a weaker H+ signals and locking onto them, but choosing to alway find the strongest connection, when all the variation of the broadband network are available, but none are strong and all are equally weak in the area.
Anyway, I'll have to live with it for now and see if the LTE service from the 3 network improves things in the future.
Thanks again everyone
Regards

Question 5G support in the USA XQ-CT72

Has anyone been able to get 5G support in the USA with Xperia 1 lV XQ-CT72 ?
I have tried T-Mobile and also AT&T on mine and the best I can do is "LTE+" on T-Mobile
On AT&T it says only LTE, yet I am getting the same DL speeds as I did wit T-Mobile around 84mb

Check if you have NR selected in Sim Mode
That is 5G, on Reddit people have tried it and they say it's working
Also check you have the SIM card in Primary slot

Thanks again I was able to figure it out on my own here In the USA my Xperia now shows 5G with AT&T I’m not sure if I am actually getting 5G speeds though
With a good connection what should my DL speeds be approximately?
Lastly I assume when the US variant starts shipping here in the States it will probably not support Wi-Fi calling either
Hard to tell really, depends on a type of network, congestion, signal quality.........and server speed on the other side.
Its clear to me that with the international version of this phone in the USA you don't get 5g speed
I did a test I ran SpeedTest using the same SIM card. One on my iPhone and got over 150mp transfer, I then put there same SIM card in my Xperia 1 IV device and even though it shows "5G"Service I am getting half the speed approximately 70mp download. So it's still running in LTE mode... Vert frustrating
But that doesn't tell that it's LTE. 5G can be worse then LTE. Unless you can lock on a specific cell on a certain tower and do proper testing which can also give veeeery different results, it's hard to tell what you are actually using. There are some apps that kinda tell you network info but it is not the same as proper testing app with all the details and ability to lock on to a specific cell. Been doing that with Huawei equipment recently and......well, very time consuming process and very frustrating vhen the same phone on the same spot can lock on some frequency but can't on another for the same technology on the same tower. And speed was anything from 50-500 MB, depends whether it was low band or high band and 735347 factors. And repeating the test right after can produce very different results.
Unless you try that 20 times with each phone on the same spot and preferably in hours of lower congestion and then have some consistency in results that xperia is always twice slower it might be just coincidence.

I live in a rural area where there is only one tower. I did the test one after another. First with the iPhone using Speed Test from Ookia and then pulled the SIM card out and put it in the Xperia, using the same app on the Xperia I experienced much slower speeds and I did run the test multiple times.
I am in Australia, before this trick I got a maximum of 200mbs after figuring this out I am getting 300 - 800mb so it seems it's working on my end
have too be careful what actually being displayed for 5G service icon , I have found on the XQ-CT72 it will show 5g icon, but with LTE dicovery app, it shows its only connected to 2 different LTE bands, the download speeds are horrible like 10mbps, with the USA model pixel 6 pro it shows 5g and LTE App shows its connected to 5G NSA71 which is the true "5g" band and download speeds are 75-100 mbps, so I returned my 1 IV and see what happens with the USA model after it been out a while., then maybe I`ll buy that one, until now pixel 6 pro for now.

Are folks checking if 5G is ACTUALLY being broadcast in their areas? Just because we see advertising on TV for 5g or a phone has 5g capability (have to check bands but some versions of this phone do have the 5g bands for the US) or a phone displays 5g in status bar (lol) but in reality is getting 4g (aka LTE). Even all typical LTE bands are not all broadcast in any given area e.g in my area Tmobile has 4 and 2 but nothing else and AT&T has 2 and 17 and nothing else. Too many times I see people endlessly discussing these 4g/5G issues without looking at the actual towers and what they are sending out in their respective areas.

You have to also check what bands are actually being broadcast by the towers in your area of usage. Further the carriers go loose with the way what they call 5g (marketing). Also bands like 66 extended LTE is just seen in a couple of spots in a general large area like 30 x 30 sq miles where I am. At least that is what I have seen.
