[Q] Did I brick my phone? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda, first post n00b here,
I recently got my hands on a SIII (lot better then my old htc one V), and I wanted to install cyanogenmod on it. So I installed the i9300 recovery rom on it and for a short while it seemed to work, but when I tryed to sideload cyanogenmod something went wrong. Everytime I rebooted I got thrown into the downloading, do not power off target!!-screen.
I quickly found my mistake, I did not have an i9300 I had an i9305. With some help from the lovely people at #cyanogenmod (shout out to you PsychoI3ob) I figured out I had to flash the stock rom. I could not figure out how to do this with heimdall, so I downloaded Odin. With Odin, everything went right untill it was somewhere around 99%. The write failed. Now the only thing I see when I but the batteries in my phone is: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
So now I would like to know: Did my phone just become a paperweight or is there still anything I can do?
Thanks a lot for reading trough!

If you can get back into download mode by shutting down your phone, and then boot while holding the volume down, home button and power button simultaneously you could try reflashing stock ROM through Odin.
If the phone turns on as soon as you put the battery in then you will have to take the battery back out, and then whilst pressing Vol Down and Home button put the battery in (I've had the same issue on a Galaxy Ace II with the phone booting as soon as the battery was put in, but managed to get back into download mode and reflash by doing as I described)
If you manage to successfully reflash, boot into recovery (turn off, then hold Vol Up, Home and Power) and do a factory reset from there just for good measure.
Good luck :good:

"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue..." It is also download mode. You can use Odin to flash while this screen has been displayed or launch Kies and restore your original firmware by firmware initialization option from tools menu.
Write model name GT-I9305 and your phone serial number (under battery). Kies will check what version of firmware was originally pre-installed on that device. Will download and flash it automatically. After that you can upgrade to newest stock. Write custom recovery via Odin, flash custom rom from CWM.

[Q] Galaxy I9100 bricked - Request help

Hi Everyone,
Need help with my I9100 which doesn't boot. I got this phone yesterday and was using it fine. Today i installed Kies and it prompted to upgrade firmware. I researched and found that it had improvements in battery life and decided to go for it. It downloaded the firmware and everything went fine until it prompted saying firmware upgrade failed and asked me to do firmware emergency recovery.
I googled to see more info regarding this error and couldnt get much information. Decided to go ahead with recovery as instructed. Again i got error " Firmware emergency recovery stopped due to GT-I9199 error". If the problem persistes please contact samsung service center.
Please suggest if this is recoverable error and any links to proceed and have a working phone.
Currently when i power on, i get a logo of phone connected to PC with yellow bang in middle. Any pointers much appreciated....
Thanks.
Don't worry, I think you can fix this yourself using ODIN. I mean, flash a custom rom through Download mode. (Turn the phone off, hold Volume Down + Home + Power for 4 seconds)
In this mode you can flash any kind of rom without doing your phone any harm. Just go to the Rom Development forum and choose your rom. I suggest Lightning Rom, because it uses ODIN, and has a very well-explained tutorial.
You can also flash a stock rom, you can get it from the Stock Rom thread, and flash that through ODIN.
Or get it fixed by Samsung and wait two weeks. (where they use exactly the same program, ODIN, to reflash the stock rom)
Look here
And here
And finally here
If all that doesn't work, take it back to samsung.
Also, KIES is a PoS, use Odin in future
Yep, KIES may look all official and reliable, but it actually seems to brick some SGS2's.
Thanks for the info's. Will try them and update soon.
No luck. I tried multiple times to update ROM using ODIN in download mode. Everytime it says NAND write operation failed and comes out. I am searching to see if any other option left before i take it back to samsung
Don't forget to try it with a different computer. Sometimes it's not the phone, it's the PC or the USB port.
Also, you can try flashing with Heimdall instead of Odin.
First of all;
Yellow triangle means you are running custom kernel/rom.
Press home+volume down and then power, to get into download mode , on your phone. If that works, take battery out, to stop it.
Go to:
Samfirmware.com
Download firmware from there. It is a rar file, I think. Open rar file to see what is in. 5 files? The biggest file has all of the other files in it.
Install via Odin. Select pda in Odin and select the biggest file from the rar.
Put your phone into download mode, connect usb and run Odin.
Adrian.
SGS2 I9100
Lite'nin rom 3.2
Make sure that all kies processes are closed or odin will fail.

You can buy a usb jig, specially designed to put you phone into download mode. Search for it on ebay. Take the battery out, plug in usb jig, replace battery and it should boot into download mode. If it does not, then the phone is dead.

Home button DEAD! Bootlop!

Hello everyone,
I'll start explaining very quickly. this morning, the home button suddenly dead. it NOT works at all. an it's an hardware problem, because I can't either access recovery mode. and that's the point. I was using cyanogenmod 9 with ICS, and when I flashed the samsung STOCK rom with ODIN, I get bootlops. I tried with the ICS samsung stock and the GB one, same thing. I saw the guide in the other section of the forum, BUT they say that I have to do a full wipe in recovery... well, I can't, my home button is dead. I'm trying to do this because the service center will "test" the home button with the phone turned on, but if I get bootlops... well, He will suspect that there is something wrong (the unofficial roms, etc...) any idea to correctly flash a samsung stock rom with odin without getting bootlops? thank you so much :crying:
I have the same problem (my home button died). However I still can boot the phone. I think what I am going to do is order the JIG to boot into download mode and delete the number of custom flashes and then install the Stock ICS and send it to Samsung. Maybe you can do the same.
You can try soft reboot to cwm. But download mode? I don't remember if any kernel had option to boot directly to download mode. Maybe old Glitch have this. Then you will be able to flash stock via odin.
But if there are bootloops than only jig is an option.

[Q] Stubborn soft brick (Download mode, no recovery mode)

Hello,
I've been having a nightmare with my Galaxy S2 GT-I9100. The phone had been giving me grief for a few months, the occasional freeze which would be fixed by a battery pull, ever since upgrading to an official ICS rom. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact ROM.
A week ago the phone froze, I pulled the battery and hit a bootloop when I tried to restart. I booted into recovery mode and attempted to wipe data. The phone attempted to wipe the data but froze. I left it for a couple of hours with no progress so I pulled the battery. The phone is now still in the same bootloop but cannot enter recovery mode. It can however enter download mode through both the 3 button technique and using a USB jig. My PC only recognises the phone in download mode and fortunately ODIN also recognises the phone. I have tried flashing various stock firmware and kernels and each time ODIN claims the flash was successful, reboots the phone and hits the same bootloop as before. I have also tried flashing CWM recovery to try and boot into that recovery mode but again this is successful but seems to make no difference.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Thanks for your time.

Hmm ... for bootloop issues, this is the correct guide => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499
But this requires recovery mode to work.
And you really pressed Volume UP + Home + Power keys, and hold them for about 15 seconds/until recovery menu appears - regardless of any other boot logo or animation which might be displayed inbetween?!

Definitely. Booting with Volume UP + Home + Power keys, I am greeted with my usual bootloop Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100 boot screen, after around 10 seconds the screen goes black and then the bootloop screen comes back on.
Any other suggestions?
Same problem
Hi,
I have the same problem. I would be interested in a solution for this as well. I've already tried reflashing the ROM, kernel and bootloader, together with repartitioning. Still can't get into recovery mode.

Hi,
What I finally managed to do is connect to ADB and do a wipe from there. Connecting to ADB in download mode sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, depends on how lucky you are. Try it a couple of times. Afterwards I was able to re-flash and it started. For me, the problem was also a bit deeper; my USB port was shortcircuiting or something. I just took a toothpick and pushed the USB pin a bit (found the idea online) and haven't had any problems since then.
Cheers,
Tudor

[Q] SIII will not boot

Hi
So I've had my Samsung SIII for just over 18 months, and it's all worked fine etc. I've never rooted it or anything.
But this morning it will not boot up. When I try to switch it on the start up sequence happens, but it gets stuck on the flashing Samsung splash screen. If I turn it off it just restarts and ends up back on that screen. The only way to stop it is to take the battery out.
I've tried starting it in recovery mode (power+home button+vol up), but the standing, open android just flashes and I end up with the android lay down with the red exclamation mark from there. It then loops between the two androids and the Samsung SIII start up logo screen. I have tried to press the volume buttons whilst on the red exclamation mark screen but cannot get to anywhere from it.
However, it will load the download mode (power+home button+ vol down) just fine.
I have looked all over but most people encountering anything similar have rooted their devices, which I have not.
Also, last week I lost all of my contacts which were stored on the device (I don't know why) but that might have something to do with it.
I don't particularly want to hard reset the phone and lose everything, but if it's the only solution I will do.
Thanks.
In download mode is the product number shown or a blank?
If it shows i9300 then you have a good chance of flashing either a full stock rom or a rescue firmware (see general forum) using odin. You will need to factory reset in recovery afterward, but your data is almost certainly unrecoverable.
If the product number is blank then you have partial SDS and require a new motherboard.

Do has boomboomer said above but as a last resort before flashing back to stock or a rescue firmware if you flash PhilZ recovery in download mode with odin. You then have a Aroma option in PhilZ recovery to browse and copy phone files so you may be able to recover some data pictures etc.
Please read PhilZ thread >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860 << and the special features thread about Aroma file manager in post #3
Please note use as a last resort to get your data back! and read everything! Also all this is presuming you can get into PhilZ recovery after flashing..
I'm having the same problem , been looking through lots of topics. When I switch on the phone it's not booting android guy lays on his back. Download mode and Android Recovery are in my range.
I've been trying to flash stock-firmware from sammobile.com with ODIN but no effect , I mean It all went OK in Odin Operation list than fially phone reset and PASS. But this android guy is still laying on his back and making fun of me xD
Before trying to get back to stock ROM, I've had rooted phone and installed RR with 4.4.2 for S3, now I don't have a clue what shall I do next ...

S6 Edge Stuck in bootloop - can't flash stock rom

UPDATE: I got stock firmware flashed on it, but as soon as it finished, it just stuck in the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge boot screen, and it won't even allow me to access recovery mode so I can wipe cache and whatnot. I'm running out of patience with this brick of a phone. It just goes straight to the same boot screen, not allowing me to get to the recovery mode. Are there any alternative ways to enter recovery mode, or alternative ways to wipe cache and partition? Please, any advice is welcomed.
Thanks in advance.
Try different odin version and cable before you messing with pit.

I had tried using three different versions of Odin, 3.07, 3.09, 3.106. I also used multiple cords and multiple versions of stock roms. And still, no success. It won't even stay off, every time it juices up, or is plugged in, it goes straight to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge boot screen and stays there.
Mind you, I am not too familiar with anything outside of stock roms, some custom roms and rooting. Have not tested out much more than that. Any noob-friendly advice would be welcomed.
I had nand write start error once during downgrading my s6 from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1. I just tried odin 3.10 and it got flashed successfully. I was lucky then.

Well, I finally got one of the firmwares to work, it ran through Odin and everything just fine, but after it was done, it basically did the same thing, it stayed on the Samsung black screen, except without the red writing at the top..

I can't access recovery, the phone won't turn off, so as soon as it has any source of battery life, it just goes straight to the samsung boot screen and stays there.
Hold vol down+power button for 15-20sec. As soon as it reboot, hold vol up+power+home button to enter recovery.

I've tried that at least 50-ish times now, It just does not work, I tried it with a second or two delay, I tried it immediately after screen turns off, tried it so many times. No matter how long I hold them down for, it just stays at the boot screen. I can get to download mode just fine, but for some reason recovery seems to not be working.
is it a bootloop (it keeps restarting or it is frozen on samsung logo) ?
if bootloop you can try: plug in power corde. press and hold both volume buttons + home + power untill it shuts down. unplug power corde. press and hold home volume down and power for download mode. get another rom and flash it.
Hi i am having exactly the same problem can boot to download but not recovery, let the phone run out of battery and as soon as you plug it in again bootloop, i was running crisscross marshmallow rom ,custom kernel i have a backup but am not sure what or how to flash correctly in Odin any help would be much appreciated thanks .
Edit flashed firmware from sammobiles worked a treat .
Any updates on this?
I have this exact problem however I never attempted rooting my phone or changing anything on the firmware, I was on YouTube when my s6 edge crashed then entered boot loop, I CANNOT ACCESS recovery mode ,but I can access Odin mode. WTF everything is stock on my phone, never even heard of 'bootloop, Odin mode' before this happened .or even had to access my recovery mode on my s6. As I search the web for help I find solutions that require recovery mode, but I can access it. Apparently bootloop happens when people try to root but I never tired that. I don't even know what that is!
This just happened to my S6. Was watching YouTube then it crashed and entered a boot loop, can't access recovery, only download mode.
