Matrix dock with nvidia shield - Shield Tablet Accessories

I have an atrix dock from Motorola. Been using it for a raspberry pi project but since it runs HDMI and keyboard through two separate connections I think it'd be a great match for the tablet!
Anyone tried it? I'll be ordering an HDMI adapter next week to try it myself.

bought a mini hdmi to hdmi adapter!
aaaand it works!!!!
I tried using my micro USB extension cable and not surprisingly it charged the tablet but didn't hand over any keyboard or trackpad input. Any suggested usb OTG cables out there? I have never bought one before but I basically need one that is male and female micro usb.
I plan to make some kind of addon case to the dock so that the loose cables sit snug and wont unplug. It would also be awesome if there was some way to make it dual screen or "extended desktop" so that the tablet could be functional instead of just docked.
PLEASE let me know of any tips or suggestions as i'm flying blind in the world of OTG cables!
Thanks

Because I'm picking up a charge when I use a simple microusb I'm unsure which of these two I should get

Hmmm never thought about thus and I have one. So your not getting any response to keyboard or pad or did you fix that already.

Not yet! I think with an otg cable I can get it working, but I don't know which ones work on the tablet. Any pointers?

Bought this otg cable in hopes that the keyboard could get picked up but it doesn't seem to work. Is there a confirmed otg cable that works on the shield?

Idk but I just want to be able to control the shield with the trackpad+ *POSSIBLE USB ON THE GO (OTG) FIX*
Power off your shield, plug in USB OTG cable with a flash drive in it. Power on the shield. Once booted, pull flash drive and use whatever OTG compatible device you wish (mouse, keyboard, micro missile launcher--thanks ThinkGeek!))
ONE CONDITION! This method BREAKS CHARGING UNTIL NEXT REBOOT! (thanks nvidia!)

It would be extremely cool if you could make a tutorial video omsure lots of people would benefit

I'll tinker more this weekend and put together a full write up but in summary I got the screen and keyboard running but it will not charge through otg at the same time. Just using a standard otg with an adapter on the regular USB end to make it a micro and another adapter on my micro HDMI cable to fit the mini HDMI on the tablet.

Hey @etruj,
I have shield tablet and atrix lapdock as well. for your OTG workaround, i have one suggestion.
From the picture you post, it looks like you are still on KitKat. I had the same issue in the beginning; hdmi works perfect but usb only charges the tablet.
After Nvidia released the Lolipop, the OTG issue has been solved automatically. It was just plug and play, and after 5.0, i didnt have any problems using my tablet with full compatibility (keyboard, touch pad and hdmi)
Maybe asking for too much: only missing thing is two finger scroll on the touch pad LOL

Long story short, updating to Lollipop will just make it work without any workaround!

Search this (accessories) forum for "otg cable" or something, there are confirmed working cables and as you found out not all OTG cables will work. Make sure you get an OTG that is confirmed to allow charging as well since this also does.t work with all OTG cables.

[Q] i777 att phone PLEASE is the OTG option

Hi i brought an otg cable for my phone however when i plug it in the cable is not showing up as usb host on notification bar like some youtube videos that show that. I just want to plug in a small usb flash drive that does not need power to boot up. I can't find a way to make the phone recognize the cable. I running ics by SHOstock v2.2.6. thank you for any help. Also did numerous searches on google and here with no results on getting this thing to work.
Have you tried toggling on/off usb debugging?
My OTG cable works fine. The odds are either your cable is not true USB OTG cable (it must short out one of the PIN at the microUSB connector side) or the custom ROM you are runing does not have USB OTG support. I'm running leaked UCLD3 ROM.
What??? There is an OTG cable? For real?

Yes there is. IIRC, the PIN5 must be shorted to ground on the microUSB port on the cable to trigger the phone into USB host mode. AOKP ROM might be created to ignore suck requirement but that's not how USB OTG works.
Well I brought the cable 2 days ago off eBay and I send an email to the vendor and he's sending me another one I hope it works for me. If not I was planning to buy the official brand name Samsung one on Amazon and I hope it works with that.

Nope. Generic adapters usually don't work. You need a specially made cable with proper PINs shorted.

I don't own any MHL adapter (HDMI adapter). But it should be standard as long as you properly supply power to the adapter externally.
I've had the official Samsung MHL adapter since the phone came out and it still works flawlessly. There pretty cheap now you can find one for about 22$. Or you could try a generic but some people love em some people throw em in the garbage

[Q] (Sprint) USB OTG broken

So I had a USB OTG cable from Motorola, it works on my Xoom, but when I try to use it on my (Sprint) SGSIII, nothing happens. I don't get any "USB Connected" messages, I don't get any prompts to mount anything, and My Files doesn't show any new devices. I've tried the cable with two different flash drives, a camera, a camcorder, and a hard drive. All of them work on the Xoom, but none work on the SGSIII. I am rooted and have a custom recovery, but everything else is stock. I downloaded USB Host Diagnostics, and it says that the phone claims it should work (Kernel, Android API, Rooted API all claim support, but no device detected). I don't know if its that the Motorola cable is unique to the Xoom, or if it is just slightly different on the Xoom such that it doesn't work with Samsung's new connector. I don't have any other OTG hosts to test the cable with. Is there any way, without flashing a new kernel (just got my phone up and running, OTG would be nice but not worth the trouble of reinstalling everything, esp if it isn't going to work), to get the OTG working?
Thanks!

That's not true. I have a cable that works with my Sprint SGS3 and I'm sure it's not a samsung cable.
@OP: This is also with the stock kernel so the support is there.
Hmmm, yeah I've been looking everywhere to see what's wrong, but all I get is that it should just work. My guess is either my phone is broken, or the OTG cable I have is just slightly different and the phone doesn't recognize it, but the Xoom does cuz it was made with the Xoom in mind. Can someone suggest a cheap OTG cable that you know works on the SGSIII? Thanks!

Its definitely all the way in, the plastic casing of the cable is flush with the bottom of the phone. No luck =(
Just bought a cheap one from Amazon that qualified for prime 2 day shipping that I ordered along with my SanDisk 64GB card. Worked fine on the thumbdrive drive I tested. It fits in real tight though, I'm going to file down the two tings so it's easier to unplug.

There is no "samsung" or "moto" OTG cable, Its either wired right or not. Micro USB has 5 pins, not 4 like normal USB. The extra pin is what determines if its an OTG cable, a "factory" cable, and so forth and with OTG, that pin is wired to ground. I have a handful of $3 OTG cheapo adapters that work with everything I have thrown at them with my S3 and that includes class complaint, bus powered 5 in 5 out midi interfaces so unless the sprint device is horribly crippled in this regard, I'd say OTG works like a champ on the S3
personally, i bought a few of these: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
just tested them with a whole range of devices (mouse, keyboard, usb drives, an ipod, another s3, a ps3 remote, a dslr) and works flawlessly
It was the Moto cable
So I had to go exchange my S3, there was dust on the camera sensor, and the Moto OTG cable didn't work on the replacement. I got one of the cheap amazon OTG cables, and lo and behold it works now. The Moto one works on the Xoom with no issue, as does the generic one I bought, but only the generic works on the S3. My guess is Moto did something slightly different with their cable, maybe used a pull-down resistor on the sense pin instead of shorting it to ground or just something that causes the S3 not to recognize it.

No, you are not getting it.
On The go (OTG) is connected a bit differently than a usb cable.
It's basicly telling your Phone that The usb drive is going to connect to The Phone and not The Phone to a computer. It's all about slaves and masters. Phone and usb are slaves, so they cannot comunicate. With OTG it makes The Phone a master. So then they can comunicate.

How is an USB 3.0 OTG connected?
To my knowledge OTG-cable reqire connectors with a 5 th pin which is used for sensing, and connected to ground. Therefore OTG won't be available to USB 2.0 Type A and B connecter because those lack the 5 th pin.
What I could not find so far does a USB 3.0 OTG just rely on the 5th pin of it's USB 2.0 part or does it some other way?

I bought this:
amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CI42C4S/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
which works perfectly but on my TV requires a separate power source for the MHL.
I've been using a Rocketfish MHL adapter for the appradio in the wifey's car until I can get an adequate mirrorcast dongle.
I haven't had any issues with it. It also comes with a 11 pin adapter for newer Samsung devices.
The Samsung branded 5 pin MHL adapters should also work and be found in stores(they had them at my local Bestbuy along with the Rocketfish I bought).
I'm not sure exactly what you're looking to do, but maybe some sort of cast dongle might be a better option.
For streaming I like using chromecast best(there's 3rd party ones that support chromecast/mirrorcast/DLNA/airplay in one unit). The user experience is much nicer with chromecast but you're limited to using apps with cast icons and a wireless network(mirrorcast/dnla don't require this).
For screen mirroring a straight HDMI cable works best but not even Motorola puts HDMI ports on their devices anymore. MHL adapters work for the most part just as well but can have more failure points and compatibility issues. I haven't tried mirrorlink yet(I do have a new appradio that supports mirrorlink as well as HDMI but it's still in the box) but from what I under stand it's not as fast as HDMI and may give noticeable lag.

This is noted in the products description. I'd like to know what cable I would need to get to charge the nVidia Shield and also allow the use of a USB Ethernet adapter.

It doesn't charge the tablet. Just powers the connected device to save battery . That's how OTG works.

No, Nvidia's implementation charges the tablet. That is the express purpose of Nvidia's addition, to allow simultaneous charging of the tablet while streaming over ethernet.
Please bear in mind I am actually using such a cable myself, and have confirmed the tablet charges used this way.

I linked to it at the top of this page, its just a regular USB OTG Y-cable, not specially made for the Shield.

Any particular order I should be plugging it in? I don't charge using that cable
Edit: nvm I see. I got another one. *buy* Hopefully this one works. Mine doesn't.
I am a little bit confused, too.
1. Does this feature just works with Android 5 or also with 4.4.2?
2. Does this only work for ethernet adapters?
3. Does this only work in console mode? (would be strange)
I have this one from German amazon.de and tried it on 4.4.2 with a USB stick and a wireless 360 controller adapter. (non-console mode)
Either it charges the tablet or it recognizes the peripheral device, never both.
So is this a problem of the OS version, or of the used peripheral device, or of the OTG-Y cable?
